I had a lapband for 7 years before revising to the sleeve this year.... What they dont tell you about the band is that there is a 40% success rate, and there are some foods you will be unable to eat anymore, doesn't matter how far out you are, if you eat them they will make you sick, and some of those foods are actually healthy for you... Once your doctor does your band, you are stuck getting fills and unfills, to find your sweet spot....my fills were covered unlimited for the first year....after the first year he charged me $150 per visit...that can add up... My cousin wanted the lapband and I begged and begged her not to do it, but she just couldn't get over having part of her stomach removed, so she went ahead and got it...and now she is living the life I warned her about... The lapband is the worst thing created, and eventually doctors are not going to do the procedure...well any doctor worth anything

I would scroll down and read the thread "Band to Gastric Sleeve revision". There you can get info from people who had the band...failed and now are in line for the sleeve. You can read about their storeis with the band, the frustrations, the second surgery due to failure of band. You are a wise lady to do your research before deciding. I love my sleeve and have no regrets. PS - I went in for a band too and surgeon suggested VSG. So glad he did

First I am wondering what kinds you all suggest. Second, I am getting like a dumping syndrome from my protein drinks. I have not had this happen in years. Any ideas why it would do this? I am going for revision by the way.

Hi Sarah, and welcome to VST. We're all here for you throughout your journey, and I wish you the very best. I had the band and it was a nightmare. Luckily, I was able to revise to the sleeve, and I'm living a very normal, healthy life. If you have any questions, or concerns, feel free to post away. Someone will have an answer for you ! ! ! -
I am getting a revision from the band to the bypass in three weeks.

Here is a link of information for those who are researching the band, their surgeons, what causes complications, how to avoid them. Fluid -- you should never get a lap band that is too tight with little or no saline, there are two sizes AP small and AP large. How to know you are in the Green Zone and when you are too tight Also here is a link for those who are researching BAND-FRIENDLY surgeons that offer great aftercare, Allergan highly recommends a Band friendly surgeon. Or you should make sure your surgeon has done MANY lap bands and has a very low revision rate. Also most importantly -- WHY IT'S IMPORTANT TO GO TO A LAP-BAND® SPECIALIST Not all weight loss centers are the same. It's important that your patients go to a LAP-BAND® System Specialist for your LAP-BAND® surgery. Use the LAP-BAND® specialist locator to find a qualified specialist for your patient. http://www.lapband.com/HCP/product-description/

My husband and I were watching Big Medicine tonight. A lady was wanting a revision surgery done. She had the Mylena band (not sure about spelling) done 10 years ago with little success. She said that she had a lot of vomiting from it. She was now wanting the gastric bypass done. The Drs went on and on about the risk of this band and how they dreaded trying to remove it and do a revision. My husband immediately asks me if that was anything like what I was having done. I said I had never heard of it. I tried to look up some stuff on the internet and cant find anything. Anyone ever heard of this?

I have posted that I have to have a revision surgery to fix my dilation (Revision Surgery for dilated esophagus). I had my second child almost two years ago, and ever since then I have been able to eat anything. I started getting fills very aggressively and we finally realized that something was wrong. Had the Upper GI and found that I was stretched. They took all of my fill out of 4 cc band, on liquids for a week, unfilled for 4 weeks was the plan. Had another upper GI, was still a little stretched so no fill again, had to wait another 3 weeks. Went to get my fill, so excited, and NO fill. The nurse said the DR said my pouch was stretched up over my band. So now I have to go talk to the surgeon on Tuesday to see what my options are, but regardless I have to have surgery for this to ever work again! I hope being on liquids really helps you and gets your pouch back down, because I do not wish this on anyone!

I would recommend Dr. Stewart in Denton: Weight Loss Surgery Specialists of North Texas | Bariatric Surgery | Denton | Dallas | Dallas-Fort Worth | Carrollton | South Ok He did my band-to-sleeve revision. Really easy recovery, nice private hospital, great staff and program. Well worth checking out. His personality is rather matter-of-fact, but that style works for me.

Anyone with BMI 33 or less having VSG surgery?
brittu replied to debking811's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My BMI is 31 and I'm planning a lap band to VSG revision. I started at 236 and got down to 164 but have been steadily regaining since my band "failed" this last year. I wish I'd done it after the first 15 pounds rather than my current regain of over 30. Britt -
Any one NOT on a diet plan and having success ?
shuckybucky replied to Kapu's topic in Food and Nutrition
I am not necessarily on a diet....meaning I eat whatever I want and do not restrict any foods. I had a revision 1/25/13 but had my lap band for almost 2 years prior to the revision. I monitor my protein and know the best ways to get high protein and less calories but I do not have any food that is off limits. I have had soda, alcohol, and other junk food items (chips, ice cream, etc). I restrict the amount of those foods but not the type of food..... of course I can't have that junk everyday. I have lost 80 pounds and have not gained any back. Food doesn't taste the same to me anymore so I don't chose to eat a lot of the foods that I used to love. Soda burns, I have been off bread, rice, and pasta for 2 years so I don't even want it anymore, I can only eat about 3 chips, and sweets like cookies make me nauseous. It's really weird now that these things aren't tempting and don't taste good. I do have a small addiction to jolly ranchers that I am working on. -
Need some support on issue in Vancouver ! Infected port!! No doctor!!
Devotedlillly posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I was banded 12 years ago by dr Leung in surrey, bc. When I was banded, I was lucky to have my surgery covered by bc medical . about 6 months later, they stopped all funding. I have had three port revisions. I currently have an infected port. I called dr.leung, but his phone is not in service ...hmmm.. I was told dr. Amson assisted in my original surgery. I called his office, and they agreed to see me. Yesterday he told me my port needed to be removed ASAP and I needed to be on antibiotics and then my port replaced. He could not do it or me. He suggested dr woodhesd or another dr. I called both today, and was told they would not fix it for me, however if I wanted to pay $7000 I could wait 6 to 8 weeks and they would remove it. I suggested by that point I would be dead, but thank you for the offer of taking my money..what??? I have an oozing infection, a medical issue, that needs to be dealt with..and I am being looked at as a dollar sign. Anyway, beyond that...I need some suggestions , and I need them fast! I don't want to loose my band. I have no doctor in charge of me now, and nobody will take me....help!!!!! I need help before the infection reaches my stomach!!!! Suggestions???? Maybe I should go to Mexico???- 12 replies

How does the pain differ from lapband to sleeve?
alaina25 replied to marfar7's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I just had revision surgery on the 12th of this month. I'm so happy I had it, already down 20lbs. I was only on pain meds for 2 days and can tell you that I had more pain when I had my gallbladder removed. I wouldn't worry about the pain what you need to be concerned with is nausea however, the nursing staff does a fine job giving you everything necessary to combat this. -
He quoted me for a TT and a body lift, and the TT was about $8k and the body lift (with vertical incision and body contouring) was $16000. His fees include the compression garment and 6 weeks of aftercare, and he said if i needed revision, he would make sure the cost would stay similar to the medicare rebate so it wouldn't cost me too much out of pocket (if anything). He also gave me item numbers for some of the procedures he's doing, so Medicare is rebating me about $2000 on his fees. The anaesthetists will cost me a maximum of $3500 (based on an 8 hours surgery, but if it takes less time, he will charge me less), of which half is rebatable by Medicare. My hospital fees will be covered by HBF because of the item numbers that were provided. Autologous fees are covered by medicare too. So altogether, after rebates, I'll be out of pocket about $16000k for everything. I decided on the body lift based on his recommendations. I figured if I was going to go ahead with surgery anyway, then I wanted to shoot for the best result I could have.

I am a 29F from NJ but my surgery is not until 3/25/16 so I am a few weeks behind you. I somewhat get where you are coming from I only have one friend I talk to (she is working towards a lap-band to sleeve revision) other than her I have not told anyone because I do not want to deal with the lack of understanding she experience with our mutual friends. . . How are you going so far? I am excited about it but nervous about silly things like losing my hair, how am I going to hide it when I go out for dinner with people or when I bring it up with a new guy I am dating. coco

NEW TO THIS SITE, need support! :) please!
LisaLoseAlotx2 replied to alyshac's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have nothing good to say about the Lapband You need to give your body time to heal, while i know how anxious you were for the revision, this will give your body time to rest. So rest and begin your pre-op diet now. begin reading all there is to know about nutrition and exercising...educate yourself while you wait. Before you know it, two months will have flown by and you will be sleeved. good luck to you -
I had a revision on May 6th and my BMI was low like yours. I weighed in at 164.5. I am now about 151 after 17 days but I think it melts off in the beginning due to low calorie intake. My Dr. said I would plateau because I was worried about the same thing. I would just up my calorie intake a bit if I lose to much. Good luck!

How does the pain differ from lapband to sleeve?
jlobyxmas replied to marfar7's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
In my experience the pain was worse with the revision. Doc chalked it up to having to go through scar tissue. Was on pain meds for three days, but it definately wasn't unbearable, just uncomfy. Nausea was my biggest problem. Good Luck! -
One month stall, beating myself up.
India928 replied to meyouus's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
PKinneB...I am scheduled for revision surgery in September but have been attending my bariatric support groups since May (three a month). At my last group there was a woman who spoke about her stall. She was doing everything right: sticking to the dietary plan, Water, exercise etc.... She did NOT lose weight for the first THREE months. Her body was holding on to everything it could. Finally, when her body realized she was not starving, she began to lose weight rapidly. (two pounds a DAY) Eventually she leveled out and everything worked out. She is eight years post-op and looks great. Her advice to the group, and mine to you is, do not give up! Ride it out. Do what you need to do, stick to your regime and stay clear of the scale- weigh once weekly if you can. Keep the faith! -
Posting for those who would like to participate in research on weight loss surgery. I found this on another site and I thought it would be good if they got some input from here as well. A research study is being conducted through the department of Psychology and Counseling of Georgian Court University, Lakewood, NJ, on quality of life (QOL) outcomes in long-term post-operative bariatric surgery patients. If you have been living with an adjustable gastric band (such as LAP Band or Realize Band, RNY gastric bypass, gastric sleeve or duodenal switch for at least two years, please take the survey athttps://www.surveymo...quality-of-life . If your current surgery was a revision, you're also welcome to participate as long as your revision was at least two years ago. Your responses will be treated with strict confidentiality, and you will have an opportunity to sign up to receive a copy of the results after you have completed the survey. If you would like more information about the study, you may email the chairperson of the department of Psychology and Counseling, Susan E. O. Field, Ph. D., at fields@georgian.edu or by phone at (732) 987-2643. If you have any questions or concerns regarding confidentiality, ethics, or the nature of this study, please contact the chairperson of the Institutional Research Review Board, Cheryl Resnick-Cortes, D.S.W., at resnickc@georgian.edu or by phone at (732) 987-2366. Thank you in advance for your participation!

Well, my surgeon's office finally called today to schedule. I am currently scheduled for June 28th. It may be scheduled for earlier, but I doubt it. They said that the doctor isn't on call after the earlier possible date. He likes to be on call after revisions in case there are any problems. That makes a lot of sense to me. They said that if he isn't going out of town, they will give me the earlier date. I guess we shall see.

I have been banded for about 7 years. no problems until last year. I am having some tests done to see if i have band erosion. I know how the band works, I guess the sleeve is the next option if I have to have it removed. i want to go with the least extreme option. How does the sleeve work? Would you feel full like with a band? With the band, after 4-5 bites it feels like if I east one more bite it will be coming back up. Not sure what to expect from a sleeve. I am 69 and dont want to do anything drastic. Thank you DA

I'm a sleeve to RNY revision too... surgery date is May 7th. Would love to be your buddy -
I cant believe you lost sooo much. I would love to hear about your story!!! Maybe start a new thread. With my old band I definately contributed to the `slip` because I always pushed the limits with my eatting. I still went from 105 kilos to 65, nothing to sneeze at, but I didnt put effort into following the rules. For some reason the weight just came off even with me eatting junk & drinking with meals etc. My problems really started when I kept getting more fill to speed the weight loss or to compinsate for my lack of effort. ie instead of revising what I was doing incorrectly, I just wanted more fil. So being too tight eventually caused too much pressure from the pbing & it caused the band to fail. I plan to remember & learn from this 2nd time round. However, this new band has different signals than the old one. I can feel things getting stuck & then make their way down! That never happened with the old band. I can eat everything from chicken to california rolls. I dont know if its because the new band tollerates more food types or because Im not tight enough. It is interesting though to have a second chance, I hope I can make it work......because you know, of course I had to tell everyone in the world about being banded, & I am getting lots of comments!

Wow Peaches sorry to hear about your difficulties but I am sure they will get you fixed up once you've had your tests and they find out the problem. Believe me I felt like a failure after regaining all my weight after the VBG years out. God bless Dr. Cobourn for doing my revision and an excellent job I am so grateful to have had very smooth sailing since being banded. Wishing you all the best in a speedy resolution of your issues, keep us posted! Hugs,
