How do you cope when you plateau or gain?
AngelaT replied to Yvonne's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
re: "If the inches are disappearing then where are they going?" Another question may well be 'where did those inches COME from?' Fat is less dense and occupies more space than muscle tissue. While my body weight has not changed much over the past 8 months, my pant size has decreased and my belt size has decreased. My body shape is headed toward that of an actual human rather than a semi-mobile poof pillow. Those are 'NSV' Non scale Victories.....recognition and celebration of NSVs are an important part of postBand life. Semi-mobile poof pillow--Oh Jack I just love the way you phrase things! You must be quite adorable in person. I think I have finally stopped losing the weight without a fill...it is a bit discouraging, but I have had people tell me I have lost more weight, so I uess I have lost inches...I did not measure myself at the beginning...wish i had so I could see more of my NSV'S! Another NSV lately is how clothes are fitting...loser! I will be getting a fill mid February it is time! -

I realize we're in the minority here, so I wanted to share a male NSV with my "Band of Brothers" out there. Pre-band, I wore size 48 Jockey briefs. My local department store carries the Jockey "Big-Man" sizes (48 and above), but there's a catch. Big-Man briefs come in a package of 2 for $16.50. So when I'd need six sets of briefs, it was $50 or $8.25 a pair, rather steep, by what's the alternative? It's expensive to be overweight. Well, my supply of 48's is now much too large for me after dropping 40 pounds pre- and post-surgery, so I went back to see about smaller sizes. Now shopping in the regular Jockey section, a package of 3 briefs, size 44, is $17. Great deal so far, right; now it's "buy two, get one free". So 6 pairs is only going to cost me $34. But wait, as I'm about to checkout, I see a clearance table and guess what? Jockey briefs, package of 3, size 44, $8.50 (now we're under $3 a pair). So I grab two packages of 44 and, when do you ever find Jockey on sale, I grab 2 packages of size 42, planning for the future. I go to the checkout counter and the clerk begins to ring up the clearance packages and the register displays $4.99 a package. Hold on, now the cost per pair just dropped to $1.65. Back to the clearance table for sizes 40 and, just for good measure, 38. Grand total for 24 pairs of briefs was $42 tax included. I just bought 24 pairs of Jockey brand men's briefs for less than 6 pairs of "Fat-Boy" (oops, Big-Man) briefs. Damn that felt terrific. I was just tickled pink. And my DH was with me on the underwear excursion so she got to share my joy firsthand. I don't mean to toot my own horn; in fact, I have so, so much to be thankful for. I just wanted to share this experience, because I know how downright demeaning it was for me to have to shop at the Fat-Boys stores. Maybe someone on the verge of deciding whether or not to get banded will benefit from this rambling. Just as an aside, anyone looking for large-size name-brands mens wear, e.g. Dockers, Jockey, at reasonable prices may want to check out Gustwillers.com; it's a clothing store in Ohio that carries large sizes in name brands at below MSRP prices.

Unexpected NSV - I'll take it!
green*eyed*girl replied to Madam Reverie's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The only problem with this element (apart from all the bruising - and lord, I am still sore), is that I'm finding it very odd to be 'knocked down' - by anything. When I was 250lbs plus, there wasn't a CAT 5 hurricane which could have knocked me over. These days, I'm like 'whoop! There she goes!'. Hahhhh this made me laugh! It reminded me that my fiance always very worried about me if I have to walk home from work after dark, he says somebody will kidnap me or something, and I always tell him do not worry, it's not that easy to sedate me and pick me up after I pass out and put me in the back of a van lol I require a team!!! Lovely story, you look stunning, I wish you more NSVs to come -
Don't know what made me try..but I haven't Ben able to wear my wedding band and engagement ring since 2001..I was pregnant with my daughter..was married in 1999..today..it fit. I was going to have them resized..but never got around to it. I am happy made the decision to go with the sleeve..I am healthier and happier for it.

it can be very hard to believe that this time will be different but it will be different. The sleeve is an amazing tool to reset your life and reclaim your health and mobility. You have so many small and large victories ahead of you. i encourage you to look for the NSV -non scale victories - topic located here and read thru it and see all the great things you can look forward to post op is very much a mental game so keep the reasons you did this in mind and look forward to the good things ahead. good luck

I went to the County Fair today and did not sample ANY fair food! Not a deep fried Oreo, funnel cake, or hand dipped corn dog passed these lips! I brought my own lunch, as did my 20 month old grandson, and we ate together while his mom and dad ordered their lunch, then we went exploring while they ate. Not only am I proud, my wallet is SO happy with me! I'm counting this as a big NSV!!

I've been up and down on weight many times in my life. 4(ish) years ago I was fitting into size 36 pants and I saved them in the hopes that one day I'd lose weight again and be able to fit in them. Well, yesterday I pulled them out of the closet and they fit great! YES! We just had a health screening here at work and I felt great when they weighed me. Although I'm still above my ideal weight, I'm on my way there! My blood pressure had gone back to normal, and I'm great on paper now! Just excited and wanted to share!

I suffer from terrible migraines. I usually get several per week and only about half the time do medications relieve them. I have just gotten used to the pain. I had splitting migraines in the hospital (surgery was 6/1/15) that the narcotics didn't even cure. I came home on 6/3/15 with a migraine, took a maxalt, and it went anyway. And I have not had a migraine since! WHAT?! This is so weird. I am knocking on wood. And all of the things that should trigger a migraine, not eating enough, sugar and caffeine withdrawal, etc are happening so I am flummoxed as to what my mystery relief is. Has anyone else experienced resolution of migraines after WLS? If so, is it permanent? Temporary? Would love some insight please.

Sharing non-scale victories - 5 months out..
shelley2b replied to shelley2b's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Gosh - thank you all so much for sharing... sometime when the scale isn't moving it's so easy to get obsessed by it - and I agree with your point about scale-a-holics. I went in for a little top up fill today and the nurse pointed out that I've lost 3 lbs in the last 2 weeks - and that's not bad at all... here I was thinking that I had stalled, and I haven't!! focusing on my NSV's and yours really helps with motivation. I'm going to keep this thread and make sure that I keep thinking about it. Best of luck to everyone! -
It i the dreaded stall. Stop making yourself crazy and step away from the scale. Look for other NSV (non scale victories). It could be taking your measurements (neck, boobs, waist, thighs/hips) and measuring the differences. It could be noting the changes in your body; can you walk further? It it easier? Do you have more range of motion in your knees?, etc.... Throughout your weight loss journey there will be stops and starts as your body adjust to the changes you are making. Do not let them frustrate you. As long as you are following the program, the weight will come off.

Lol that's an unusual NSV but great weight loss there, well done -
Oh, I hope the scale gives you the best news, but even if it doesn't, you know you are doing awesome due to the clothing nsv.

NSV Clothes and I can see...Finally!
Kattastic posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I started out in October at a size 22/24. I was finally forced to buy a couple of new bras last night, one pair of Jeans, and two new shirts. The shirts are size 14/16 and the jeans are size 18. I probably could've bought a 16 but they would have definitely been too tight in the sitting position LOL. The scale is still moving but this is exciting because I can finally see the difference myself! -
Envious of friend that has had GB
chichigirl replied to Connorsmom's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
There's an old saying, the grass is always greener on the other side. It's only human nature that you envy her for her rapid weight loss as you are in the process of losing weight yourself, albeit slower. I doubt very seriously that there are very many banded people who haven't at one time or another questioned our original decision and thought about what if. It's human nature. If we could take a pill and wake up thin tomorrow, there would be a line wrapping around the globe itself to get that pill. I'd be in it, I know. Stating that she eats anything and everything isn't possible without her suffering some really adverse side effects. We all know that, but if you are basing this on her word alone, don't be so easily taken in by her. If you have witnessed her yourself eating things that she shouldn't be able to, I doubt if you get to see her bodies reaction to it. Besides, what is she learning, how to continue her unhealthy habits, resulting in the usual outcome eventually? Instead of putting down your own accomplishment, which is wonderful BTW, try giving yourself credit and be proud. You are doing what you felt was best for you at the time you made the decision. Try to remember those reasons why you opted to be banded vs GB. Those reasons were important to you then and still should be. You are losing at a perfectly normal healthy rate. You are also learning to make better food choices and living a healthier lifestyle. You cannot tell me that after all of the weight you have lost, you haven't noticed any changes, it would be impossible. Think NSV, write them down and remind yourself of what has changed for you. Do you not have more energy? Are you not wearing a smaller size? Are you sincerely not happier than you were before you lost this weight? Sorry to go on like this, but I think you are selling yourself short. You do not deserve to be treated like that, even by yourself. You are better than that, recognize it and respond to the positive thinking rather than the negative. Take care of yourself, please. I personally think you are doing a wonderful job and I know I am not alone here in thinking that. Cindy -
Very good NSV! I can totally relate! My husband is very large (400 or so) and we have to choose tables and we can never eat on the patio if it has plastic chairs. While that fact is startling to me, it is taking him a while to wrap his head around it. Congrats! Enjoy this!

A very nice NSV for me.

That is a great NSV - CONGRATS!!!! -
This has been a great weekend for NSVs. I did a tour of an underground cave system, and I never once had to think, "oh lord, please let me fit." I walked up the 60+ stairs at the end without stopping for a break. And, I had a regular customer come up to me to say they didn't recognize me. I am about six weeks out from RNY, down 80 lbs all together (50 before surgery, 30 since). I feel really good. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
