    Slow weight loss?

I feel like many people who are researching weight loss surgery cruise around boards and only really absorb the stuff they are inclined to absorb. That varies from person to person. Some people may be more optimistic, and focus on posts from young men who weigh over 600 lbs and lost 40 lbs in their first month and then they expect they'll be the same. They just gloss over everyone reporting in maybe a 10 - 20 lb weight loss. Those overly optimistic people who focus on the best outcomes may also be the ones who are, post op, posting things like, I'm two weeks out of surgery, why am I tired? Or, I'm five days out of surgery, why do I still feel pain? On the other hand, there are people who are perhaps more pessimistic or cautious by nature, and they are the ones who focus on what they read about complications, re-gain, etc. and they come back after surgery and post things like "why am I able to drink stuff, does this mean my sleeve doesn't work?" or "I'm not throwing up constantly like I thought I would, what is wrong with me?"
  2. The doctors and staff at UT Southwestern have been amazing! I saw Dr. Puzziferri, who I adore. She's doing a lot of cutting-edge research on obesity and surgery. I visited several other docs before making my decision, and none held a candle to UTSW. Beautiful hospital, low complication rates (I didn't have any), professional people, helpful, caring, etc. I wouldn't go anywhere else, and I'm very picky and risk-averse.
  3. Ok...so I'm only 4 months out, but I'm doing FABULOUS! I've been super lucky with no complications and an easy recovery. My questions relate to 1) hair Loss....how long did you go thru it cuz mine is really falling out quite a bit! and 2) how about your scars? mine are still VERY red. How long until the redness goes away? I've been putting Neosporin on them, hope that helps but we will see! Thanks for your input. :-)

    Stool

If it were me, I would go to the ER. If something is wrong it's better to catch it early than let it get worse. If it's nothing at least you would have the peace of mind. Dark stool can be a symptom of some serious complications! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Liquid diet

Stick to it as much as you can, it'll just be more restrictive and for sure in concrete to follow when you are operated on. And you really don't want there to be any complications on when they operate on ya. Most terrible thing they will do is cancel it and reschedule it at a later time. I think the most important time to follow the rules is in the day before surgery -- Clear liquids -- they made me drink a bottle and a half of magnesium citrate to hxc clear my bowels which wasn't pleasant lol. Best of luck on your own journey!

What do you tell ppl at work?

I am a lapband survivor too - and I think that is a reason why I have chosen not to tell anyone about my sleeve revision. It was kind of embarrassing to face the people who knew I had the lap-band when I regained weight after the slippage and unfill. I don't want to deal with any scrutiny or questions this time. When asking for the time off, I chose to be vague about needing medical care and needing to be out of the office. I do not feel anyone is entitled to more detailed info about my health than that. After all, if I was having a gynecologic surgery or hemorrhoids removed, I probably wouldn't want to tell the people at work details about those kinds of surgeries either, so people should know better than to pry. If people ask about the weight loss I'll just say that I am eating smaller portions and being more active (which is true after surgery for most of us after all). I had my sleeve revision Dec 29th and I am returning to work tomorrow (Jan 3rd). I do feel ready for it, thank goodness (the first two days after surgery were really tough but I felt significantly better after that and each day has been better since). My job isn't extremely physical though, and I was fortunate enough to not have any complications that made recovery slower.

    Looking for a friend

I will join the friend train ???? I also have Kaiser, but I'm in Maryland. Started the program in September, looking at April for surgery and looking to get sleeved (still struggling to choose between rny and sleeve). My hubby is semi-supportive (he understands why I want to do this, but he's scared of complications. He came with me to a weight loss surgery class and was really into it). Message me some time. 9. On march 1, 2010 I was admitted to a hospital to get lap-band surgery. It was outpatient so I went home the same day. Over the next 9 months, I lost 87 lbs. I started having problems with fills, overfilling, prolapse, and not being able to tolerate healthy foods because the unhealthy would go down and not make me vomit (you don't know about this until you have had a band!). I gained 50 lbs back over the next 2 years, but worked really hard and managed to lose the 50 and then 13 more for a total of 100 lbs lost! That loss was short lived because I had another prolapse, tight band, loose band, slip, prolapse....etc. I have gained 25 lbs over the last few months and decided 1 month ago to have the band removed and converted to the sleeve. My surgery was last Thursday 12/29/16 and the differences are staggering! I remember having a couple of days right after my band where I thought "What on earth did I do to myself?" The gas and the pain from gas was almost disabling. I have gas from surgery with this, but no physical barrier keeping it from escaping now. I'm up, moving around, taking care of myself, no hunger, a complete distain for food. I have yet to have a "bad idea" thought about my sleeve surgery. I'm excited about my future and not having to deal with band complications any longer! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Band to VSG or Bypass

I went in for a band adjustment, hopefully finding a doctor who knew what he was doing, and instead he suggested for me to get a revision to a sleeve after studying my recent history of problems finding my sweetspot. He never brought up RNY. I'm happy with the sleeve. I think if he did offer the RNY vs sleeve, I'd go for the sleeve. I read Dr. V's book on gastric sleeve (good book), and he said in his experience, of all WLS, the sleeve is the most natural and has the least complications.
  12. Don't be in too much of a hurry I found the counseling and guidance I received before the surgery extremely helpful. I know you can be impatient but I've had several medical complications since then an unexpected things like losing my taste for most Foods and I mean I can't taste them anymore , I'm only 10 weeks out and I'm dealing with an ulcer right now. In my state the University of Washington doesn't even perform Lap Band anymore they said it's not effective as you can guess. You want to do this but you want to do it the right and the safe way. Stool

If it were me and remember I say if it were me , one more sign of any blood and I would go into the ER grab somebody's face and say what's going on here you have to be your own advocate. Listen to me I've had nothing but complications since my surgery including an ulcer I'm dealing with now. I am feeling better and these things can happen just remember the squeaky wheel gets the oil so watch things carefully. Sent from my SGH-M919 using the BariatricPal App

Surgery is NEXT MONDAY! What should I expect?!

I took one of my own pillows and under clothes everything else was provided except your favorite books or even coloring stuff. Be prepared to stick to the diet to the letter after surgery if you don't you can get complications I've had a post-surgical yeast infection of the systemic variety. Now I have an ulcer I'm dealing with and it also means almost constant nausea inability to eat anything except much and even just a few bites of that and stomach pain and discomfort so if your doctor says liquids for a week that's what you do if he says purees for 2 weeks that's what you do. 16. In my world, there is no such thing as "cheating". I am an adult and I make choices, sometimes good, sometimes not so good. I chose to stick to my prescribed diet pre and post op 100%. I respected myself and my family too much to allow a few bites of food derail my success and quite frankly, my life. There is no food out there worth the risk of a leak, an abscess or any other complication, in my opinion. Is it easy? Not always. Are you worth it? Absolutely.
  17. Well... my surgeon described it to me like this Bypass is still the gold standard in terms of weightloss... HOWEVER if you have medical problems post-op the bypass could be the reason why. Whereas with the sleeve you still absorb everything as normal and it doesn't create more problems for you. Now what I would use as my deciding factor would be 1. How much weight do you have to lose? 2. What are you triggers? Bypass will give you dumping syndrome if you eat sugary foods, whereas sleeve will not. 3. How much do you have to spend... a huge consideration for me was bypass was $20,000 cash, and sleeve was $10,500 cash. I was already borrowing money and draining my bank account for the sleeve so bypass was out of my reach. Plus if you look at sleeve videos on youtube, or listen to people stories on here you can see that people lose just as much weight with the sleeve versus bypass. It's a tool and it all depends on how you use it. The sleeve has much fewer complications and problems post-op.

    Lapband / Gastric Bypass

My surgeon doesn't offer the band anymore, that was the surgery I had originally planned to get. My cousin had it over 10 years ago, she had some complications initially but has been very successful overall. I have several friends who had gastric bypass, a couple regained and have a lot of complications, one actually died from complications and some have been very successful. There are so many variables and I think you have to choose the path that makes most sense to you. I chose the sleeve but I am not far enough post op yet to give you any long term experience but I am happy with my choice. Bypass always scared me so that wasn't an option for me. Good luck! 19. Hi everyone, I had lapband surgery in 2009, and then it was removed in 2012. I had a huge issue with my gallbladder, which caused pancreatitis. I was in the hospital for a week, and also had been having complications with my band. The doctor at the time recommended that we take my band out, and do a revision. I feel like such a baby, I didn't feel like I was ready for a revision. I wish now I had done it. Fast forward to 2017, and I have gained all the weight back I lost with my band. I turn 41 this month and have mild hypertension. I can't seem to get the weight off, I will do really well for a bit, and then gain it all back again. I remember when I had my band, I went through a depression, because I had made food such an important part of my life. It was a friend whose relationship with me was changed drastically. I suppose that's what I fear, feeling down and depressed. Or having complications with the surgery. I've heard such horror stories. Gah! Tell me it's worth it. I'm 5'5" and weigh 302 pounds. I have four babies, I want to live to watch them grow up. My fear is holding me back a little bit. Part of me is determined to do whatever it takes. I just need to convince the other part.
  20. I wanted the bypass as well, but my surgeon suggested the sleeve as it was a better fit with the medications I take. I don't regret it for a minute(maybe the first few days). It's been a slow, but steady weight loss with zero complications. Best wishes to you with your decision. @@Mrs.Tricey, you have a beautiful sense of style!!

    Return to work

    Hi! Questions for sleeved persons

@@Angelica Marti I'm two and a half years out. -Since the sleeve is forever, how it works once we arrive to the desired weight and go on losing is not needed? Maintaining is different for each of us. You will add healthy carbs instructed by your dietician. This will help stop your weight loss. Your maintenance plan looks different if you have health issues, mobility issues or an above average fitness level. You can indulge once in a while If I gain weight, I go back to my bariatric weight loss diet and re-evaluate my exercise effort. The work does not end after you hit goal. -Any of you thought that the sleeve can also not improve our healthy in the future? Not improve would be complications. Always a risk of complications for any type of surgery. Improve health was one of my main reasons to have surgery. Type one diabetic well controlled, No colesterol issues, No more CPAP and Improved heart health. I am off many medications. I don't see Dr's as much because my labs are all good. I mean, is a scar in the stomach that can have a problem in any point of our lives. Look up statistics and ask your surgeon. I have had no complications so far. -once the operation is done and everything's ok there will be always the risk that the clips can be broken or open and cause a problem? Look up statistics and ask your surgeon. -How is for you (for those who have the sleeve for a long time) to go to dinner with people who can eat normally? You wish to eat and can't do it? With the sleeve, you are satisfied by smaller portions. When you are maintaining your weight you can indulge. If you see the scale move back up. You go back to your bariatric diet and put more time in at the gym. Life is normal I enjoy food and socializing at dinner. Or you can just eat your very little small portion and be happy? Its' hard for you to believe right now. But you are going to be happy with smaller portions. You won't be drooling over other people's meals. The thought of eating like I used to makes me realize how bad my relationship with food was. Food no longer controls me.

  24. Hope your daughter has an uneventful recovery! I am in Alabama and was curious who her new doctor is? It wouldn't be related but my original doctor disappeared in the middle of the night, rumor mill went nuts. I googled him and found a lawsuit was won against him in January 2016 - a rny patient of his called him with complications and he didn't tell them to go to the hospital, and they died. The lawsuit was for 3m. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  25. Someone mentioned in a previous post that people only post complications and rarely when they are doing well. I know its not as interesting but I am doing much better than I thought I would at 12 days post surgery. I have pretty much stopped taking my meds minus the PPI which I was already on. I'm hitting my goals for the most part and while I do miss eating solid food I am fine with cream Soups and Protein powder since thats pretty much what I live on at this point. I tried some puree stuff and it was ok...not really all that excited by it so back to my cream of XYZ soups I go. I'm only weighing in at my Dr's office so no new weight update, I was down 10 lbs 8 days post surgery, I think I go back this Thursday or Friday. I just wanted to post something positive for the Pre-Operation folks I know are lurking.
