can`t use the restroom
Billy363627 replied to martin's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Go to a drug store and get some benefiber. A lot of people here use miralax but benefiber is less harsh on your system. You need to increase your Water intake too. It really helps because you are mostly on Proteins. -
Getting back on track
longer-life replied to LSUVetGirl10's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm a lactose intolerant, foodie, no seafood,no canned Soup, picky eater. I can relate. Hopefully others will chime in with store bought ideas but if they don't, would you consider throwing some things in a crock pot and/or oven while studying on the weekends? You can half recipes and freeze/refrigerate individually and grab one in the AM on the way out. One cooking session will last you a LONG time. Baked chicken cordon bleu & Cooking Light Magazine's "crock pot Feijoada" comes to mind. No rice is needed, the Beans and meats are super filling and high in protein. They have other crock pot recipes (with no beans) that you might want to consider. http://www.cookinglight.com/food/top-rated-recipes/slow-cooker-favorites-00400000038588/page22.html You might not want to cook at all, but I just wanted to throw this out there, just in case. Best wishes! -
My dr. is having me do protein shakes, popsicles, broth, powerade, water and diluted non-pulp juices.

No fill and still very uncomfortable.
Dolores33778 replied to Lorelei's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi @@Lorelei, why did you have your liquid taken out? The restriction varies depending on many factors such as weather, time of the month, stress, sometime even elevation (like flying). I'm 4.5 years out and haven't had a fill in over 2 years and still have good restriction that changes to really tight at times. I have other banded friends that experience the same thing, so this can change for many reasons. Are you keeping up your Protein levels daily? -
Looking back over the past 19 years I don't remember a day that has gone by that I have not been concerned about my weight. My weight started to fluctuate after I had my first child 19 years ago. Before pregnancy I was 105 pounds, always a small child & teenager. I have tried every diet imaginable; diet pills, gym memberships (yes that is plural), nutritionist and several personal trainers. If the word weight loss was involved I tried it. 2 years ago I began researching different types of weight loss surgeries. I narrowed it down to the gastric sleeve and the lap band. I met with a Bariatric Surgeon in Raleigh NC and he discussed both options in detail with me. After the discussion with the surgeon I knew that the gastric sleeve was the best option for me. The doctors office went over all the cost with me and what my insurance company would require. So this is where my journey begins! Appointments were set; lab work, sleep study, ultrasound of my stomach, upper GI, and several meetings with a nutritionist and a psychologist. Let me tell you after all of the those appointments I was exhausted! The results were back and everything was submitted to my insurance company, BlueCross BlueShield of NC. IT CAME BACK DENIED!! I was devastated!! I could not afford the out of pocket cost with the surgeon in NC! (estimate $25,000) I knew I wanted this surgery and I knew there had to be a way I could get it! After surfing the web I came across this website and began to read everyones experiences and costs. Mexico looked like the best option for me! I would have never even thought about going to Mexico to get this surgery performed but the price was GREAT and everyone's experiences were too! My next step was getting my husband and my two teenaged children's blessing! They did not take it very well when I first mentioned it. After MANY discussions and arguments they agreed that if the gastric sleeve surgery meant that much to me they were going to support me. My mother however, was NOT supportive at all! She said that if I went to mexico she would be very angry with me. So I decided not to tell her my final decision and just get it done and deal with her afterwards! Now to pick a surgeon! There seams to be a lot of wonderful surgeons in Mexico but I had to chose one! I decided on Doctor Kelly and scheduled my surgery with him for May 24th! I FLY OUT TODAY!

Help!!! Got my 3rd fill yesterday putting 6cc in my band. I was able to drink Water and a Protein shake last night. This morning had 3 drinks of coffee and I had a horrible stuck episode...although I never got sick. I called my doctors office and they had me come in. They took 1/2cc. Can a 1/2 cc really make that much difference? If at 6 cc liquids could not pass through, how will be able to pass with 5.5cc? I'm struggling with this. Also, I suppose to wait until Saturday to try and eat (3 days), but I am nervous to wait. What if I get stuck again when i try and eat...and it is the weekend? What will I do? I won't be able to get an unfill until Monday. Should I try something tomorrow afternoon? Or should I wait? Help!!!

So just got home from the doc's office. Last month when I went I had lost 18lbs! That was insane and I knew I was too tight. So she loosened up the band, I plateaued for a little while after that and this visit today, I only lost 2 pounds... I guess it's normal considering I lost so much the last time. Anyway Im still happy and celebrating because I did not gain any weight back and even still managed to lose some. Today she tightened it a small tad because I was still feeling hungry at times. But the real excitement is...I went to the mall and fit into a SIZE 8 JEANS! I cannot believe it! I don't remember being in the 1 digits before. I'm happy, and I love this decision. I have five months to go before reaching my goal weight. I hope I can do it, hittin the gym later, taking my multi vitamins, and getting in my protein. Liquids for 2 days and then onto mushies. I wonder what it's like to not obsess about food, weight and appearance? I wonder if that feeling will ever go away? Let me know guys... happy holidays!

Struggling to find things to eat at 10 weeks out from RNY. Chicken and beef make me so sick I just have horrible pain and throw up over and over. I am eating greek yogart, snow crab legs and some soups .. green pea and barley. I eat salad with diet dressing and peeled green apples. I snack on chick peas, soy beans and small pretzel sticks. If I try to drink protein drinks it makes me sick and I struggle drinking anything but herbal tea. Anyone know if it will change in the future? Are you able to ever drink and not sip water? Are you ever able to eat normal meat again? Wondering if it gets better .... is it that i don't chewy enough ?

Thanks for the kind thoughts. I had surgery May 28th. SW 244, current weight 197. I am just struggling with getting enough protein and eating more solid foods. I am living on cottage cheese, string cheese, yogurt and fish.

How many times a day should you eat?
KristenLe replied to juneau's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@juneau My plan suggests 5-6 small meals - 3 hours in between. They emphasized how important it was to eat shortly after getting up to kick start your metabolism. At 4 weeks I'm supposed to eat 4-5 small amounts of purees but then drink protein shakes in between as my fluid. -

I do not wait when drinking Protein. on a 5 to 6 times a day seating schedule and have no problem getting my 80+ grams of protein. And make sure to make use of an app like My Fitness pal. It really helps to keep track of things. -

Christinamo7 replied to juneau's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
my practice recommends 3 small meals and Snacks in between if hungry or to meet goals. at six months out sometimes I need a Protein rich snack sometimes not. they do not want us having shakes past the first month on a regular basis, or relying on Protein Bars, but to get our nutrition from whole foods as much as possible. on work days, especially if I am the "late person" I end up packing my measured food for the WHOLE day, and just eating on it as I can since I do not really have control of when my meal and breaks will be. I know by bedtime, if I've eating/drank what I brought that I have met my goals within the calories as appropriate. -
I'm on 30grams of Protein shakes and 64fl oz everyday for 2 weeks. Haven't managed any of it yet! LOL! Have gotten about 24fl oz down so far, which includes about a 3rd of my shake, today. Doc actually specifically said NO gatorade/g2 stuff! I don't know why, didn't think to ask. Hmmmm. Anyway, that's it for me for 2 weeks, then I can start progressing w/yogurts, applesauce, etc. I have to read my paperwork again b/c I can't remember much of it.

How many times a day should you eat?
Bufflehead replied to juneau's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My team's plan is 3 meals per day and no snacks other than protein shakes. They discourage snacking as it leads to mindless grazing and taking in more calories than you need. It is okay to be hungry between meals -- you will not starve to death. I lost 200 lbs following this plan and was perfectly healthy throughout. It's a good thing to follow the guidance your bariatric team provides for you. -

Veronivt replied to juneau's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My plan is 3 meals a day plus a Protein shake. I was told to space my meals apart every 4 hours. I do sometimes have to add a snack to get in all my protein, but that doesnt happen often. This works for me! And I've been getting my 80-90g of protein in everyday. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
I need your input please
iggychic replied to mariamitani's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Jersey mentioned supliments. They're very important early out because we aren't getting enough from our small and limited food intake. Are you taking any? And if so, it might be worth your time to get a blood test check of your nutrients to see if you're low in B or D which can sap your energy. Balancing your diet is also important (and easier said than done!). Some nuts think that keeping carbs down to nothing is great, others say don't count carbs as long as they're good carbs. Also, the liquids and Protein are important. I found I was having trouble when I wasn't getting in all of my fluids and protein so I made a real effort to up them and it made a huge diff for me. Apparently a woman can't live on wine alone (but if you soak a chicken breast in it it's fair game) -
What if what made us fat keeps us fat?
krinannie replied to Liz1531's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Let me tell you as a living breathing sugar addict, you can curb that too with lap band. Here is how: When eating your fat for the day, choose good olive oil and lots of Omega 3. IF you get in your protien and do this, your sugar craving will actuallly be quelled. I didn't eat sugar for over a year doing this. It worked. If I was low on that the craving tried to sneak in and I adjusted my Protein and good fat and it went away. Never say never....... -
What if what made us fat keeps us fat?
mcgreen replied to Liz1531's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hey Liz- I've been banded almost 8 weeks and the desire to binge has not gone away for me at all. I keep all the foods that I used to love to binge on out of my house- they aren't allowed in and I try to eat some Protein first if I feel like Im out of control- usually by doing that, I get full and the thought of eating a bunch of crap doesn't appeal to me at that time. The band won't fix your head hunger. It does make it harder to eat the volumes that I used to eat. Good luck! -

Difficulty meeting goals in the pureed/soft food stage
James Marusek replied to healthier&happier4life's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
You don't have to push yourself into the pureed food stage. I had RNY gastric bypass 3 years ago. I was on Full liquids for the first 4 weeks, Pureed Foods for the next 4 and only in the 9th week did I transition to solids. So maybe your stomach is not quite ready and might need a little extra healing time. The three most important elements after gastric bypass surgery are meeting your Protein, Fluid and Vitamin daily requirements. Food is secondary because your body is converting store fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. Your fluid requirement is more than just Water. It includes the water in the protein shakes, milk, the water you take to take your Vitamins, the water component of Soups, drinks like crystal light, tea or decaf coffee, etc. It is important to meet this daily requirement to keep from becoming dehydrated. Also as your fat cells are eliminated they release chemicals and hormones that are stored inside. These need to be flushed from your system, through your kidneys and expelled in your urine. Your body needs fluids to make this happen. Not sure why you are feeling anemic. Your body needs two minerals: Calcium and Iron. But if you take these at the same time or near the same time, they will not allow your body to absorb them. So time separation is very important. For me I found that I took all my iron supplements at night just before bedtime. Whereas I took my calciums spread out throughout the day. That worked best for me. Without adequate iron, you will become anemic. A lack of B12 can also make you weak and tired. If you are taking B12 as a time release capsule instead of sublingual, that might cause the weakness. -
So confused-Weighing less=less protein?
ssflbelle replied to ssflbelle's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks Alex for your input into this topic. Your right the topic did divide into many other topics. However it is all good and was very informative. I gather from what you wrote only being 1 month post op you would stay with the 60 grams of Protein? As for changing Dr this is the one that did the 6 month pre-op diet with and the 3 surgeries and I have all ready had a 1 week and 1 month post op. I doubt now would be a good time to change to another Doctor. My 3 month post op is April 20th and hopefully by that time the Dietitian will be on staff working full time. -
Average Diet Weeks 1 and 2 post op?
KabinKitty replied to cludgie's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I'm on the pre-op full liquid diet (2nd day) and I'm sick of Protein shakes (Muscle Milk) already! YIKES!! I'm going to Magic Bullet some chicken and beef with a little broth and add it to some pureed soups to get my protein in. I love soup, but the protein taste in the shakes are hard to....swallow for me. Maybe I can find some Protein Shakes that I like (suggestions are welcome). Someone said that Muscle Milk tatse like a Yoo Hoo...? Yoo Hoo....the choclate kind I bought does not taste like Yoo Hoo to me. I can do savory much better than sweet. -
Hi everyone. My name is Margaret. I am a mother, wife, friend, employee advocate, and a lover of dogs. I live with my husband and Chug (Chihuahua/pug) in Colorado. I just had my revision surgery on June 30th from lap band to sleeve. I am at Bariatric Stage IV - eating pureed foods and drinking Protein drinks. I am limited to five foods: egg whites, plain yogurt, refried Beans, cottage cheese and pudding. I am also taking liquid Vitamins and getting B-12 monthly injections. My daily goals are to continue to drink 64 oz of Fluid each day; eat/drink 65 grams of protein, walk 30 minutes (if not more), and continue to protect my surgery incisions and stomach by not lifting, pulling, pushing anything over 15 lbs.I am glad that the doctor limits his patients to five foods because I think it's really easy at this point to overdue it on other soft foods that may not be so healthy for you. The weight is coming off slowly which I think is good. I feel pretty good except last night, I had a side ache next to the incision where my port use to be. Other than that, I feel really good. I think this surgery was much easier than the lap band. I still get hungry and the food that my husband is eating looks tempting. However, I try to remind myself that this is just head hunger. I don't think I am really hungry. I am no longer a coffee drinker since we were told to stop drinking it. I was totally addicted to coffee mostly because of the liquid creamers. I feel so much better and I no longer have to have coffee first thing in the morning I am just beginning this journey and I am still learning to listen to my body. I am not in a support group at this time but I would love to connect with others who are on a similar journey.

I am looking for the stall to come soon. I am still having problems with getting all my Proteins. I am working hard on it. I am feeling better everyday. I am so happy for everyone. I am just happy -
OH my I remember how that two weeks of pre-op was! HOnestly- even with the pain, the inability to swallow at first, etc. I can say the pre-op was almost harder- because you still have the hunger of a big old stomach! I can truly say I rarely feel hunger- when I do it is stimulated by the smell of cooking more than anything. I really do have to pay attention to get those drinks going etc. LOL on the rawhide chew! My dog, by the way, is really suffering the most- his mama/spoil me with sharing food partner in crime is gone! I will indeed keep posting- and my You Tube link is in my signature- I update very regularly. I got so much help from those before me that I want to pay it forward and each day is an adventure in figuring out how this new thumby of mine works. Tonight, btw, I had cream of wheat for the first time- yumm!!! Very thinned with milk but still thicker than most of what I have tried. For the first time, eating it with a spoon- I had this feeling- I can hardly even describe it- I burped a bit (I burp a LOT!) and I just kind of knew that was enough. I felt a tiny twinge in my stomach- not pain exactly- just a little twinge, and knew I had done the right thing. Those burps- well, I=every time I drink I burp I think my body does that to get rid of the air and even though we laugh a lot about it I actually appreciate it because I have heard others mention the air hurts. Mine comes right up! Feel free to ask me questions too. My husband is an absolute darling . He takes such good care of me- it is not something new to him as I have had surgeries, several falls, and a life of pain that varies in its effect on my life. Every morning in he comes with my water, tea, and the first protein drink. He has lost his eating buddy but we are carving out new things to share. I really think my advice about the carbs will help you too. I just think over time having only the Unjury and water will wear you and keep you from getting your energy back - at least that has been true for me- that week of clears plus protein wore me down to zero energy. In addition- my own opinion is the diarrhea is just your body adjusting to the bizarre and extreme thing that happened. Mine had cleared up ( almost) and my body is getting adjusted to this new state of affairs. In any case- I am just glad I don't have the opposite condition! Keep me posted- I have been thinking about you. BTW I usually think of a week as every Monday- I was sleeved on Monday so every Monday is my surgeversary.
