I took a day trip the first week after surgery. I just packed a small cooler bag with waters and protein drinks. We went to lunch and I had soup. Walked around the outlets shopping, I did pretty good just got tired quick. I have since spent weekends away out of town, now onto normal foods. You just have to look over menu's and don't hesitate to ask for substitutions. I ordered a side of broccoli and took 1 bite and realized it had so much butter it was ridiculous. Now, I always remember to order my vegetables plain or get fresh veggies on the side. I always take protein shakes with me, to make sure I balance and meet my protein goals. -
My plan said no caffeine for i think a month post op. I still had it. Only in the form of the Premier Protein Coffee Shake that has caffeine in it. I had no issues. The milk tho may cause issues. My paperwork said to take lactaid pills for those with milk issues. But as someone said. I would test how it goes at home vs being out and having stomach issues.

By week 7 you should be fine. But yes, breaks each day would be an idea just in case. You may find it helps to take some food with you Take a little esky with you to keep things cold & restock with ice each day (unless you’ll have access to a freezer to refreeze ice bricks). Pick up yoghurt from grocery stores, pack some shakes, meal replacement soups, cheese, jerky, protein bars, etc. just in case you struggle to find suitable protein rich & plan friendly food as you travel. Enjoy your trip. -
Ok I’m really watching out what I eat and tomorrow is my first test as I’m going out with friends to eat. Obviously I’ll carry my protein shake with me but I had a question about coffee/tea..would it be ok to have the coffee/tea with caffeine with milk? This is would obviously be just one time but I don’t want to have any ramifications. Thanks! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Your info says you had the surgery on May 20th of this year. That puts you at 6 1/2 weeks out. Maybe you need to just update your info. Beyond that, I would cut out the snacks, make sure you're watching your protein, carbs, and fats, and maybe increase your exercising. If you do it once a day, try twice a day. If you already do it twice a day, try doing different things per exercise session. Maybe add stretching or yoga. -

I am 13 days post op. 10 lbs since day of surgery. Been stalled last 4 days. I did lose 7 lbs the week before surgery. Tomorrow I start soft foods. I did go ahead and try some refried been mash tonight and I can only eat maybe 1 oz without vomiting back up into my mouth. Iv been struggling with getting in liquids and liquid proteins due to restriction. Can’t imagine eating enough to get protein in. This is way more difficult to manage nutritionally then I ever expected -
It is going relatively well. I made it through the 4th only because the family didn't really have some big cookout. Probably because of me, which I am thankful for. Day 6 of 14 now. So I do 4 protein shakes a day. For the first 12 days I can have unlimited non-starchy vegetables, 1 serving of fruit, and 1tbsp (I think) of fats (butter for veggies or half an avocado. I have been sticking to just the protein shakes as much as possible though and only use the veggies etc when I feel like I'm gonna die. As if the morning of Day 5 I was down 6 lbs. Edit: Also helps that the hubs is doing it with me as much as he can. He works in a lumberyard so the heat and manual labor he needs his energy, but if he can, he will just drink protein shakes so I'm not alone. And if he does cheat I don't know about it, so I don't want to as well

Ps. It’s very filling so if you don’t like soggy chips don’t make a lot. I cut the tortilla in 6 and I’m on my third slice and stuffed. I did use more chicken and beans then the recipe called for though so it’s a lot of protein.

I have another friend told the same thing. But she was much smaller than me, so I was wondering if that's why. Regardless - I would've killed for that. The pre-op was the hardest. On the upside - my dietician said instant mashed potatoes were fine for pre-op, so I'm enjoying the heck out of a really bad four cheese mashed potatoes with protein powder right now.

I agree. We are like Santa’s bag of toys. We all get thrown in the weight loss surgery bag, and when they ‘shake us out,’ we’ve all had fairly different protocols and yet at the same time, basically the same protocols. best of luck to you! I think what I was MOST thankful for with my practice’s protocol was that clear liquids post op were only one day. I despised the clear liquid protein drinks. 🤢 -
YUM! I love nachos! I have made them once since surgery and used the quest protein chips, but they aren't my favorite. So, I need to try other options. Mr. tortilla are super low calorie/carb tortillas. They are good and they make chips but I haven't tried them. I might just cute up a wrap or 2 and air fry my own to make them even better and give it a try! I do eat a few regular tortillas with guacamole or salsa at Mexican restaurants but nothing like I used to.

I don’t have a balloon but I’m pretty sure that is what it is supposed to do. It is a restrictive procedure. The key for us with sleeve is to try to stop before we get to that full point. Usually one extra bite and we are quite uncomfortable. What does your doctor say about the amount you can eat? If you were expecting to be able to eat a little more then I would call them and see if there is anything they can do but as long as you are able to get your protein in I would assume it’s a good thing.

So how much can you really eat??? 1 hear from now

This doc gives a pretty good layout of the progression that you should expect: I'm not so sure about his books and green smoothies, but his progression is consistent with my experience after 10+ years, though my wife is still somewhat more restricted in volume, so there is a YMMV thing going on there. I can eat about half of what I could before surgery. This is good and bad, in that it is plenty to be able to get the bulk of our nutrition from food (at least with a VSG), but it is also plenty to get into trouble with if you don't learn to eat right - that "gain it all back" threat is a real one if you don't pay attention. Volume can also be highly dependent upon what you are eating, as there are slider foods out there that are virtually unlimited, mainly highly processed junk foods (think chips, pretzels, etc.) One of my takeaways from Dr. Weiner's piece above is if you feel the need to increase your volume over time, try to do it with bulky, low calorie veg as a way of dealing with this. I've been having a salad for lunch most days since early post op, using a couple ounces of leftover meat, bit of cheese and, at the time, maybe 3 oz of salad veg - chopped spinach, pepper, tomato, avo, scallion, etc. My lunches are still just a couple ounces of meat (thats all I need along with all of the other protein in the day) but the veg content is a lot higher now, maybe 7-8 oz. Still pretty moderate in calories, but very high nutritionally. I avoid buffets as they don't provide good value anymore, but can handle them when presented with one. I have never vomited (at least from over eating.) -
For Gastric Bypass - Water intake question
kcuster83 replied to WillowAspen's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I had Bypass. I was hitting my water goal by my 2 week follow up. Protein took about 3 weeks and then fell back off at pureed foods so I had to readjust my eating schedule. Now I pretty much have it down pat, but I still can't hit my protein goal without 1 shake a day. I have tried a few times. My work day looks like this, weekends are the same but the time just shifts a few hours later: Wake up 530 Breakfast 6-630am: Shake @ 30g protein Drink from 7/730-11/1130am: At least 20 oz. Lunch 12pm: Depends on what I pack but anywhere from 12-20g protein Drink from 1-3pm: At least 20 oz. Snack (as needed for the protein boost from a lighter lunch) 330pm: Usually 5-10g protein like a string cheese Drink from 4-6ish pm: At least 20 oz Dinner around 6/630pm: Depends on what I pack but anywhere from 15-20g protein Drink from 7pm till bedtime: I go to bed early on week nights so not much at this time. I average 70g protein and 70oz water daily. At first I was annoyed because I was just constantly worrying about it and non stop drinking and eating. But now at a little over 3 months post op I can drink a 16 oz bottle of water in 30 minutes. So if I get behind I can (kinda) chug it to catch up or if I am on track I can just take a break and not worry about it. You really do just find your new routine, it just might take some time. I am VERY motivated to make the best of this so I pushed myself very hard int he beginning to start hitting those goals. -
Meal preppers - looking for some advice/suggestions
ShoppGirl replied to Tufflaw's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Okay I swear I just replied to this but maybe I posted to the wrong thread?? Anyways. It’s not really meal prepping but what helps me is to make extra protein when I do cook. Leftover chicken from kabobs for instance can become tacos, salad topping or pizza (cauliflower crust) the next day. Same thing with leftover steak kabobs which can become fajitas or salad toppings. I prep the kabobs and my husband grills them, then I use the leftovers to make lunch or dinner for a few days. Ooh another tip I learned with the frozen cauliflower crust (that you can do with any frozen pizza really) is when you get home from the store and it’s thawed out anyways, cut it up into slices and then refreeze it. Later you can grab out a slice at a time and pop it in the oven. Just put a cookie sheet below it if you bake it directly on the rack because sometimes toppings will fall through. Also, if you use the leftover chicken as a topping add this after you cook it so it doesn’t dry out any more. -
Meal preppers - looking for some advice/suggestions
ShoppGirl replied to Tufflaw's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don’t really meal prep but I will make extras of the protein when cooking. Especially chicken which later becomes salad or pizza toppings or tacos, etc. same thing with steak which can become fajitas or a great salad. I suppose meal preppers would take this further, make even more and freeze some for a rainy day. Also, if you just don’t like to cook which I don’t really you can get rotisserie chicken from the grocery and throw together many simple meals from that. I am super picky and don’t eat a big variety but I will make it into chicken salad, chicken tacos, chicken fajitas, stuffed peppers, white pizza (cauliflower crust) and of course you can have just chicken with a veggie of your choice. You can even buy it at Walmart deli now already pulled off the bones. How cool is that. -
What protein shakes for Reset to take off regain.
samuelsmom replied to KC35's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
At Costco they have Orgain Clean protein shakes which are lovely. There is both a animal and plant-based version. As far as length of time to do a reset, there are multiple schools of thought out there, however, I would recommend doing what seems right to you. I would start off with a limited diets of protein shakes and green non-starchy vegetables. As you stabilize slowly add in fruit and regular meals. If it continues to be an issue going to a medical weight loss clinic might help too. Good Luck! -
What has really helped me was going back to protein shakes. For me it is like a whole system reset. The cravings go away and I can deal a bit better. A call to the doctor is also a good idea. It you are having cravings perhaps one of the newer meds might help. Regain is touch but not insumountable!

Hi I have been having nonreactive hypoglycemia at least I believe so. I will eat protein without carbs and immediately drops in less than an hour. The lowest I have dropped is 52 but I have needed to go to the hospital to get sugar IVS. I am not previously diabetic but I occasionally have had issues with low blood sugar in the past. My surgery was on June 17 so I don't know what my options are in dealing with this. The hospital suggested I meet with an endocrinologist any ideas?

How long after gastric sleeve are you at risk of getting Dumping Syndrome ?

I was told no caffeine. I do drink a decaf coffee with my protein shake chocolate, vanilla or strawberry, plus a few pumps of sugar free calorie free syrup. -

Also forgot to add that I am trying to stop snacking. I have a cheese stick here, protein chips, yogurt, fruit, cottage cheese. My guilt has been Teddy Grahams and Ritz baked and thin chips. I know this is bad and is probably the cause of my long long stall. I do see inches coming off however. -
Hi Everyi e me again with another stall question. So for the past 3-4 months I have been at a stall. I keep gaining and losing the same 1-2 pounds. I have 20 more pounds to go to reach the doctor’s weight loss goal. I will be one year August 16. I also changed my exercise routine. My eating changed also as I am eating more foods as opposed to drinking my protein. Is this normal?

SarahMan80 replied to Supafly82's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m just over a year out and eat 3-5 small meals a day. They consist of about 2.5 to 4 ounces protein and .2 to 1 cup vegetables. Now, I will say that the consistency of the meal changes things a lot. If it is a grilled meat or something with little to no sauce I can’t eat that much…but if is ground meat or something with a good sauce I can eat a lot more. I also find that eating bread-y stuff can be touchy….some days I can eat more than others. Overall, my meals are 1/3 to 1/2 of a regular person’s portion. My daily calorie intake is usually between 1100 and 1500. -
As you found out, I'm on purees. 200 cals from protein powder alone (50g). Then cream of wheat, soup, yogurt, pudding, peanut butter powder and food boredom making up the rest.

Trying to get out of my head....
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My nutritionist is kinda trash. But my surgeon and the nurse practitioner are fantastic, and they said not to count calories at all. Just watch the protein, carbs, and fats. So that's what I do. I may need to try that fitness app. I just worry because I can look at what I'm eating, and how much, and I know I'm not getting enough in. But my mind just has such a hold on me right now that I literally can't force myself to eat more. Even when I know I need to. I'm hungry, I'm under what I should be eating, but it's like I won't allow it. I need to figure out how to break that. I wonder if I keep hitting stalls because I'm not eating enough......is that a thing??
