  1. Hello I'm Susan I had my gastric bypass 16th November 2015 and just under a month later I was back in hospital because my stomach had closed and had to be reopened after that I tolerated food and everything normally but on June 22nd this year I ended up being rushed to a&e crying in pain and constantly being sick had to have CT scan X-rays and a camera down my throat and then after 2 days in hospital I had ultrasound done and found out I had gallstones and after 5months in crippling pain to the point I was on morphine and not able to go to work for the whole time I had my gallbladder out on 7th November 2016 I had 29 stones (yes I kept them to show my nephews as they were very concerned when I told them what was wrong with me and constantly asked if I still had rocks in my tummy) I was released the next day and stopped needing pain relief after 3 day, I am now 3weeks post op and last few days it feels like I've been punched in side of my tummy so sharp pain comes and go but their is a general pain there all the time plus it's been painful to eat anything want to know if anyone has experienced this. Please help going to see my doctor next thursday Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Why do so many sleevers get GERD?

This was a concern of mine too. Especially on the Facebook bypass support groups I was on. They were saying that 25% of sleevers end up getting converted. Yikes! But you can’t believe everything you read on the internet and so I went looking for more reliable sources of information - namely medical studies. Sorry I didn’t save the links so you can read them for yourself but I have screenshots of the information I wanted: As you can see, the numbers are actually quite small! So don't feel you have to worry about getting a revision - statistics are in your favor!
  3. I started out at 232 and between the liquid diet and then the gastric bypass, I went to 210. Now I’m 5 weeks post op and haven’t lost a pound since week 3. This can’t be it, right?!

What to expect in the hospital

I just spoke with a nurse who had bypass and also works at the hospital where our surgeon is. She suggested buying an ultra cheap egg crate topper to put on top of the bed as she said she could never get comfortable in the bed. I would have never thought of that but do remember some very uncomfortable hospital beds!

Lap band removed to have sleeve

Me too Band07!!! I'm scheduled for 9/25 for band removal and revision to the sleeve. My surgeon removed all my saline on 8/12 and had me do an UGI to check out everything. According to my UGI results he said he didn't see a problem with doing the 2 surgeries at once, but it did depend on how much scar tissue is around my band and he can't tell that until he gets in there. Praying that I don't have a lot of scar tissue!!
  6. I had gastric bypass in June 2005 lost about 120 pounds keep it off for 3-4 yrs then gained back 65 pounds.. Got my band Jan 4 2013.. had 3 fills for a total of 9.2cc in a 14cc band.. have lost about 20 pounds mainly from exercise bc I have a lil restriction after 3rd fill.. am hoping to be at da green zone with my next fill in a few weeks. And yes, I too felt like a failure after gaining weight back but this time around I feel more educated and ready for this life time change.. my 1st couple of yrs with gastric.. that weight fell off without any effort and I felt great, I figured there's no way this weight gonna come back.. But it did and it will continue to if I don't start back eating right and exercising.. I'm happy to have that 2nd chance to get it right once again... good luck to u all!
  7. Hello all! I have had my lapband for 4.5 years. The usual story here. Had success, lost 70 lbs in the first year. Then the band just changed. To much restriction, couldn't eat chicken, steak or eggs. Started rely on slidder foods. Had all the fluid removed b/c i was tired of having food stuck l the time. Have slowly gained 40 lbs back over the last 2.5 years. Was considering the sleeve back August but decided to give me band one more try. Since i have already paid for it and did have success. Have had several fills since September but here I am with minimal fluid i think somewhere between 2 and 3 cc's and having to much restriction agian while losing no weight. I have actually gained 4 lbs. I am exhausted from dieting and working out. My joints are killing me from all this weight pouding it out in the gym. I just do not understand why my body refuses to drop any weight. I am seeing my laband doc this coming Wednesday to discuss a revision. I have emailed him and told him i wanted to talk about this so he is aware. He said that he usually does them in two surgeries, waiting 3 months in between. I am very nervous about such an invasive surgery which is why i didn't opt for gastric bypass years ago. But i just do know what else to do. I feel like i have two choices: be fat or have this surgery. My hubby is behind me, which i was a little surprised. he was not a fan of me having the lapband but has always been supportortive. He hates the labpand and said he can no longer watch me choke on my food. When i brought up the sleeve he said that he loved the way that i am but realizes that i am getting nowhere on my own. He said that he sees all the work that i put in and that he is sad that i have to rely on surgery. I guess this post was more of a vent/telling my story and hoping for any info and stories that anyone has. Love this forum and have learned a lot.
  8. My insurance approved me for surgery. I want to choose the best surgery. My doctor would like me to lose 100lbs. I want to know which surgery is healthier. I only get two choices and that is the gastric sleeve or the gastric bypass is. I've done so much research and I just can't make up my mind. Help?!?!

Any other BAND on bypass patients?

Hi Ladies, I am getting my band over bypass done on May 10th. Everyone that I had talked to has had amazing results, at or below their goal, so I am hopeful. I had my gastric bypass done in 2003, so I am almost 10 years out. Ive gained about 1/2 back. My goal now is to lose about 50 lbs. Are you guys happy you did it? I will be a self pay and Im hoping its the right decision. How was your recovery? How long before you went back to work? I have a desk job, pretty sedetary.

    Lap Band to Gastric Bypass

I'm having the lapband to bypass revision next month. I just got approved for surgery today! I'm a little nervous about whether it'll be different than with someone who didnt have a band first.
  11. All set for 8/23/19. This is my 2nd rny gastric bypass. First one was 17 years ago. Then I was 516 lbs, lost down to 175, bounced back to 400. This is my last rodeo. Gotta make it happen. Got 9 grandkids that love their Papaw. Sent from my LGMP260 using BariatricPal mobile app

    What’s normal?

I'm not a revision patient, but at over four years out I can eat anything. Even at two years out, I could eat anything. Most of the restrictions and food intolerances are in the first few months post-surgery. as far as volume, you can eat more and more as time goes on (although just because you CAN doesn't always mean you SHOULD). Right now I would characterize myself as a "light eater". I highly doubt anyone would guess I've had WLS (whereas early out, it was obvious that something was going on). I eat normally, but fairly lightly. Not any different than my regular weight-conscious, normal weight friends eat, really. If I go out, I typically get an appetizer - or a salad - or I'll order an entree and bring half of it home. Most of my naturally thin or weight conscious friends do that, too.
  13. I have three options none if which are appealing. First they are going to try an endoscopy to try and widen the sleeve. If that isn't successful they will have to cut a hole in the sleeve and worst case they will have to cut out more of my stomach and intestines like a bypass patient. I'm starting to ask myself why me???
  14. Vega I thought I was the only one with this. It does not appear to have anything to do with eating sometimes it happens late in the evening while watching TV. I had a Gastric Bypass about 4 years ago and this just started about 1 year ago. It takes my breath away and sometimes it gets a little scary. Would love to know if I can do something to avoid this. It doesn’t happen all the time but when it does, does not feel good at all.
  15. I was also self-pay in Florida. My cost was $16,500.00. That price includes anything and everything that has to do with my band for one year; meaning fills, monthly visits, nutritionist visits, support group and any complications that arise. My port flipped and I had to have revision surgery last month to correct it and I did not pay a dime for the additional surgery. We refinanced our house to pay for the surgery. I believe inamed also has a finance program on their website.

    Medication

Do you even need to crush them (that's more of an RNY thing due to the fear of pills getting stuck in the stoma)? Some programs give the same instructions to both sleeve and bypass patients more out of convenience than necessity - what does your program recommend (don't just go by what you see others online doing)?

    Nurse Bandsters?

Being a nurse made me certain I did not want a bypass!!! I don't know if other than that being an RN influenced my decision... just tired of being fat and tired...
  18. I had a gastric bypass the day before thanksgiving and there’s one area that is still hurting very bad to the point I can hardly stand up. I spoke with a nurse at my doctors office and she said that during the procedure my bowel had been knicked so they had to put in a “deep stitch”. Wondering if anyone else has experienced this

    Me!

Here I am before and after gastric bypass I see a bit of difference.... I had surgery on August 22 so I feel like I'm losing slow but as long as I get to my goal of 155 I will be a happy camper lol. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  20. Well, while I haven't ever been diagnosed with PCOS, I am experiencing infertility. I was pregnant once, for 25 weeks and then my babe experienced fetal demise and passed. We got pregnant naturally but not since 2020. I just had RNY on March 8th and I'm hoping we see a positive test in our future, again. Infertility is frustrating and painful. just hang in there. I had the surgery for fertility reasons, too. Hoping this provides my body room for my eggs to release freely and to safely bear another child. Congrats on taking control of your life and your circumstances. I'll be following you and your story ... maybe we both will get our rainbows! edit: Not sure if you have it or have heard of it, but I use an app called Glow to track my cycles. There is a community section on there (similar to this) where you can search for weight loss surgery, vsg, gastric bypass, etc. and read the stories and experiences of people on there. You can, of course, post as well. It's a little more focused on the PCOS and fertility angle than just general weight loss. Food for thought.
  21. My surgery date is Nov 4... Im switching from band to bypass due to my lap band leaked out...
  22. Is this a thing? Can you be re-sleeved? I'm just curious...I thought you can only go from being sleeved to a bypass...

Just had The Talk with my doctor..

I've had the DS. I'm about a month post op and my highest weight was 320. At your starting weight I'd really consider the DS for its better weight loss and lack of regain, or go bypass if you have a lot of GERD issues. I have some GERD issues but it is controlled by medication pretty well and I needed the DS because I'm diabetic with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea. I had a hysterectomy for cancer. All in all so far it is worth it! I'm down 30+ lbs from my highest weight, off all diabetes medications, off blood pressure medications, my blood sugar is normal, my BP is normal, and I have more energy! I'm really glad I went with the DS. Its a riskier surgery but only by a bit, and the things you gain from it like disease remission made it very much worth it for me. I'd encourage you to read about ALL the various surgeries and then discuss it with your surgeon. They'll be able to tell you what will be most effective for your individual case based on their experiences. If you can, go to someone who can perform any of the surgeries, only certain surgeons can do the DS or Bypass.

    The journey continues..

I went to my first required support group meeting last night. I have to attend another one next month. It's not as easy as I expected to get the surgery done. I'll pretty much have to jump through hoops - one more meeting, then see a bariatric internist, then a nutritionist, then on to the shrink, thennnnn onwards toward surgery, but only after I lose at least 30 pounds on my own. AHHHG! I'm sure this is all normal stuff that everyone has to go through, but dang, they want a lot. If I can lose 30 pounds on my own, why do I need surgery? That's the part that gets me a little confounded. If it was so easy to drop 30 pounds, don't they think everyone would have done it already?!?! There were some recent patients at the meeting. The bypass patients all looked pale, sickly, and shriveled - not to be mean, they lost the weight - great for them.. but the bandsters looked a whole helluva lot healthier. I also got to meet my surgeon, and he's sweet as can be. That was nice. Ok, well, I'm rambling.. just figured I'd pop in with an update. Hope everyone is doing well, two thumbs way up for the successful, *hugs* of support to those that aren't there yet (you will be!). El

    Long term concerns

I was very nervous to start with. However, with any WLS you can have problems and complications. I knew several people who took the bypass aproach, a couple have lost weight only to gain it back, one is doing perfect, one lost weight, but is having a hard time with keeping levels in balance due to in ablility to absorb nutrients. I talked to my doctor. I ask would I have to replace my band one day, he said possibly, just like some people have to have a second knee replacement if they live long enough. I may not ever have an issue, I know some people who have had their band 15 years with no problems. Once I reach my goal weight and have good restriction I won't have to go see the doctor nearly as often. My doctor likes to have patients come in about once a year once they get to maintance unless they are having a problem. For me the band was the right choice. I wanted to loose weight, but I didn't want to have problems absorbing nutrients. If a day comes and my band has to go I will reevaluate along with my doctor to see if I get a new band or go to the sleeve. But, that day may never happen so I am not going to worry about it for now.
