    Breaking Point

Thank you all for sharing! It's so nice to feel like I'm not entirely alone, even if reasons are different. I don't know many people in my life who can really relate to being obese and the issues it can cause, so find it hard to address certain things (even the health issues) with anyone really. I have told a very select few that I really trust that I'm getting gastric bypass, and they're supportive, but also don't fully understand.

    Breaking Point

Hi there! I'm new here, but am super excited to have found an online forum to participate in while I go on this journey. I am (hopefully) going to be getting gastric bypass at MUSC in the coming months. I'll be self-pay (dang insurance exclusions) so slightly less hoops to jump through, but I have not yet met with the surgeon or anything. My initial consult is March 1st. I kind of wanted to share what my "breaking point" was that ultimately resulted in the call to schedule a consult, and maybe see if other people would share theirs in the hopes that I am not alone. Be warned that it may be TMI for some people, and is definitely not something I have shared with anyone in my social circle (they are not as big as me and would likely be not only disgusted, but not understand). A little background on me, I've basically been obese since right after high school, so around 17 years now. The range of how obese has varied but steadily climbed upwards until my heaviest of 273 (I'm 5'4"). I've done every diet under the sun, including some really really unhealthy ones (HCG anyone?). I've got high blood pressure, problems with my skin constantly being flushed, signs of pre-diabetes, aches and pains from minimal daily activities.. a lot of the same stuff I suspect a lot of people here have had too. You'd think that the health issues would have been enough, and you'd be mostly right. They were enough for me to look into weight loss surgery, but not enough alone for me to actually take the plunge. I kept putting that off. No, to finally make the call it took me having trouble wiping my own butt after pooping. Maybe it's cause I'm just not that flexible, but it sure felt like all the accumulated fat on my arms, side, butt, and back were getting in the way of actually reaching. That was my breaking point. Sitting on a toilet, straining to try and get myself clean and realizing I couldn't. Now, I did eventually manage with a quick shower of my lower half and some creative use of a towel to dry off/make sure there wasn't anything the water didn't get, but I still can't shake the feeling of being unclean every time I have to use the bathroom. Lord knows I am not asking my husband to come wipe poo from my butt. Am I alone in the struggle? What thing, or things, made you finally decide this was what you needed after you'd been maybe putting it off?

    65 yr olds with bypass

I am 62 and just had bypass surgery Feb 2. I am a stickler for following the Dr’s orders and am doing quite well. I can only walk for 20 minutes because I am still heavy, but I add in 35 minutes on the bike. My biggest mistake is taking bites that are to big but my gut is quick to remind me. I am eating healthy and feel great.

  6. I’ve been going over my pre-surgery information (gastric bypass). It specifies that the protein I need to take after surgery has to be whey protein. Does anybody know why or have any experience with this? I’ve done some online searching and collagen protein seems better Thanks, Breanne

    Hello

Welcome! I'm sorry you have to have a revision but I wish you a great outcome. At least you've been through this before, so you know the drill (although it's a different procedure, I know).

    65 yr olds with bypass

Hi there. I was 65 when I had the RNY bypass. This April 28 I will be four years out and in September I turn 70. I am 4ft 11” tall and weighed 248.9 when I had the surgery. I wore a very tight and uncomfortable size 22. I suffered from asthma and needed a Cpap machine. I lost one half of myself. At 124 and between a size 4 or 6 depending on how its made, I have enjoyed many shopping trips to replace my wardrobe. I remember standing in front of a full length mirror in size 16 jeans and staring at my reflection with tears running down my face for at least fifteen minutes. I couldnt believe the difference. I didnt know the person I was looking at. While that was important the very best that happened was that my asthma is gone. Totally gone and I dont need to hook up to the cpap machine any more either. I have crazy energy. I opened a store at the end of 2019 and went to Legoland with my daughter and grandchildren and kept up with them and fit in the roller coaster seat with the bar all the way down. I feel better gaining on 70 than I did at 45. My only regret is that I didnt do it sooner. I missed so much before surgery. Here is my advice to you. Read everything you can. Get out of bed after surgery and walk the gas out which moves the pain out. Follow the diet you get from the nutritionist. Go into this with a very positive attitude and let life fill your heart and soul. Enjoy every day of your life and keep a diary with honest statements of what you are seeing and feeling. It will get you thru when you finally realize that person staring back in the mirror is really you. Good luck.

    Newbie Here

Thank y'all for responding. I'm having the bypass surgery. Sent from my LM-Q720 using BariatricPal mobile app
  13. My doctor was saying I would only have to take a Vitamin B-12 spray so I was just curious if you have to take vitamins the rest of your life like Gastric Bypass patients because I have seen different things on here.

VSG to RNY still have GERD

So I had same experience. I thought I was cured the fist month or so and then bam !! I think we were so swollen from the surgeries. We didnt feel it until healed, at least that is what I feel happened with me. What was your last EGD like before the revision? I read where the roux limb may be too short in an article online, but I have no idea and none of it makes sense.

VSG to RNY still have GERD

I would still get the revision because I had erosive esophagitis D. It has gone down to an A, so I shouldnt have to worry about getting cancer. I take 60mg Dexilant everyday plus carafate

VSG to RNY still have GERD

Hey All, Interesting thread. I have constant heartburn and had a VSG in 2016. If you had it to do over would you still get the RNY revision? I am wondering if its worth it if you get the heartburn anyway and are still constantly taking the PPI's?
  21. I know it is a while until April 7, I’m just super excited to have a date to put on my calendar🙂

    Sleeve to RNY

I had revision from sleeve to rny in September 2020 and have had zero GERD symptoms since surgery. I do dump with some sugar substitutes, but so far it seems limited specifically to sugar alcohols (xylitol, erythritol, sorbitol, etc.). Splenda and Stevia have been fine so far.
  23. I had my revision on Dec 14th. At first I thought it had definitely worked but the past few weeks the reflux is back with a vengeance. I’m at a loss as to why it’s still happening too. 🙄
  24. I'm a sleeve to bypass revision and I've lost 40 pounds since my bypass surgery on 10/29/20 (17 weeks post-op). Since my surgery was for GERD and not officially bariatric, I didn't have as much to lose to get to my goal weight. But I want to lose a few pounds more just to give myself some "wiggle" room once I'm past the honeymoon period. I know that weight gain is possible, and very likely probable, after the 1st year. I wasn't really prepared for maintenance after my sleeve surgery in 2014 and gained almost 50 lbs. in the 6 years following surgery. I want to be better prepared to maintain a normal weight since I've been given a second chance to truly change my relationship with food!
  25. I'd stay away from FB groups - there are a lot of toxic ones out there, from what I hear. I've never bothered with them - there are much better sites for information, like this one. complications aren't all that common. And most people do NOT have revisions (some do because of severe GERD, but they're in the minority. The majority of VSG patients don't develop GERD, and for those who do, a lot of cases can be managed through medication. Leaks and stomach blockages are pretty rare. You're probably hearing about this because people who have complications are more likely to post about them than are people who've never had any. They're looking for support or advice. People who are two or five or ten years out who've never had any issues would have no reason to post about them.
