    Pills

Take it from a Bandster (not RNY yet)...if YOUR doc says crush pills, crush pills. Do not crush extended release pills as that defeats the purpose as they will dissolve immediately and you don't want that with an extended release pill. --------------When I was banded eons ago, I had major pill issues. I'm on some other meds, two of which are huge IMO. With pharmacist's ok, I cut them with a pill cutter, or broke with my fingers, then I crushed with a pill crusher. Then there was the issue on just how to tolerate the wickedly awful taste.------------IF you are allowed these foods, I really don't know....take a smidge (technical aren't I?) of SF/FF pudding, stir the pill(s) in it. Put it in your mouth and swallow as fast as you can! Don't rub your tongue around your mouth, it'll make you taste the pill. Psych yourself out that you're not really doing this (but you are) and QUICKLY follow with another smidge, or more if you're allowed and use that as a chaser, or the rest of a meal, whatever. You might get a teeny taste of pill, but it'll be tolerable. You could also use yogurt. Dissolving a pill in liquid is disgusting no matter how you spin it. So if you can eat pudding or yogurt, try this. If you can have more of a pudding/yogurt chaser, the better! ------------ I had to do this for a lonnnnggg time, part of bandster hell. But it worked.----------------if your doc says to crush, HE must have a reason, always follow your Doc's orders. From what I hear, you don't have to do it long. Yay! Just ask your pharmacist about cutting or crushing any pill. I'm joined at the hip with MY pharmacist, we have a great relationship.------------Good luck on your exciting journey!
  2. Hi. I am Pre op trying out some new things and was wondering if anyone has added powder to yogurt. If so, how was it? What flavors did you mix and how much powder would you recommend adding ? Thanks !!

    Post op liquid diet

Not necessarily, but I wouldn't go overboard. Your stomach is healing. I stuck with Protein drinks, yogurt, and Water. I could have used crystal light to flavor the water, but I figured that it would be one less thing for my belly to worry about while healing. Im on soft foods now, and I love cooking with spices. Spice and flavoring can also have nutritional value, but watch the salt and the processed flavorings. Just my opinion. I'm new to this, so I could be wrong Sent from my MotoE2(4G-LTE) using the BariatricPal App

    Suggestions please...

I am 7 months out and a slow loser. I have lost 45 pounds, but my starting weight was 218. I had a revision to a sleeve from a slipped band. I eat about every 2-3 hours. Breakfast is sugar free oatmeal made with milk. AM snack is a banana the 100 Greek yogurt with 1/4 c kashi lean crunch. Lunch is a vegetable and 2 protein-1/2 fat free cottage cheese or 2 light string cheese. PM snack is apple with 1 T low fat peanut butter. Supper is vegetable and 2 oz of some sort of protein. Night snacks are an apple with 1 T low fat peanut butter and 1/2 c frozen Greek yogurt. Hope this helps. It works for me.

    What are slider foods?

Popcorn is my biggest slider (I can eat a whole bucket if I get one). Also chips/dip, crackers, and Cookies. Ice cream, however, is not for me. I can only eat about 4-6 bites and be good. I think a slider is personal for everyone. Basically it's whatever goes thru easily without filling u up. I think even healthy foods can be sliders (like yogurt)

Very interesting... I think the post-op diets may be similarly variable as the pre-op diets. In your case, yogurt is part of the pureed stage, but in my post-op diet staging, yogurt was part of the full liquid phase. I've been eating yogurt and no-sugar-added applesauce since 2 days after surgery without issue. Go figure... I agree that jerky would not be good due to its texture and consistency. Still, regardless of what the "infraction" is, I don't think it's worth feeling guilt over. Perhaps I have a different perspective, in that while I fully intend to comply with the phases of the diet progression, there's also the safety net in that if you proceed too quickly or eat something you shouldn't, your body will let you know pretty darned quickly that you shouldn't have done that. It's like a child and a hot stove... once you burn yourself, you'll know not to touch it again. I've been lucky thus far, in that nothing I've yet ingested post-surgery, whether type of food or amount or pace, has triggered any nausea, let alone vomiting, dumping, etc. The only negative has been if I eat or drink something too quickly, I'll feel a bit of heartburn-like pressure. That's my signal to put on the brakes. Thus far it's passed in about 10-15 seconds. I presume that as I add more food types to my diet, I'm likely to encounter combinations/types that my system will not tolerate, but thus far (knock on wood) I've been lucky in that regard.
  7. I just had my first fill on Monday and I had been drinking Muscle Milk Protein shakes every morning for Breakfast, but I swear since my first fill, they're not holding me over as long. So, today I branched out with two slices of whole grain toast with 2 tblsp of Peanut Butter. (Well, it wasn't quite 2 because I go light on the PNB) The bread was 35 calories per slice and double protein, so altogether my breakfast had 15 grams of protein and less than 20 grams of carbs. Total calories were 210. I ate almost both slices. Is that too much? They weren't large slices of toast (I'd say slightly smaller than the average loaf) but still I ate BOTH. Of course, I do feel full now. But, I want to make sure that I'm not overeating. What do you normally eat for breakfast. I am not an egg person and I can't stand yogurt, either. I'm just curious to see how other bandsters handle this meal. And - I'm a breakfast person. I always eat heavier in the morning and at lunch than I do at night.
  8. I couldn't eat for my first two weeks after surgery. I lived on clear protein drinks (not shakes). They were good because 1) I could swallow them and keep them down, 2) they kept me hydrated and 3) they gave me protein as well. It was week 3 when I started eating again (things like yogurt, pudding, etc.)
  9. I'm on full liquids now. Here's what I've had today 4 oz Peach soy baby yogurt- Breakfast fat free sugar free chocolate pudding cup-snack Optima Slim Fast shake (about 1/2's all I could stomach)- lunch full fat full sugar butterscotch pudding cup-snack This part is so much better for me than the broth. If I never have to have any broth for the rest of my life, I will be okay!! I thought I was going to die. I was absolutely starving, in fact I woke up from surgery hungry.
  10. Alright my friends! I talked to my dietician yesterday and she said I can start Solid Food in 2 weeks. I am to slowly start introducing new foods at that time so I know what I'm tolerating and what I'm not. So far I've had carnitas minus the tortillas, eggs, bacon, grilled chicken, tuna, peaches, applesauce, ham and yogurt on the soft food diet. I just kinda have those in rotation. I'm excited about incorporating more food but I'm not 100% where to start. It has to stay low carb per my nutritionist. I'm to avoid high carb/ high starch food for at least the next 6 months. Honestly I think I will avoid them the rest of my life. So here's my question... where do I start? I was wondering if salads are back in play or if that's too much ruffage and not enough protein. Advice? I look forward to your answers.
  11. Hi All... I'm 3 weeks post-op and I can't keep food down. My 1st week post op seemed so much better than week 3. I placed a call to my surgeon of course, but I'm waiting for a response since it's the weekend. I love this forum because there is so much 1st hand information. Anyways... Week 2 and going on week 3 has been miserable. I can't stand the thought of putting anything in my mouth because of the nausea. I was prescribed an anti-nausea patch, but so far it hasn't worked. I'm just worried because what little I do try to eat won't stay down. I can drink water, but even then I start getting nauseous. I'm not eating too fast either. I took two tiny tiny bites of yogurt this morning and it came up. I just feel so helpless. This is not what I wanted. I want balance and I want to feel healthy. I feel more u. nhealthy now than I did 30 pounds ago pre-op. I'm glad I've lost weight but this is not happiness. I would take back my 30 lbs pounds if it meant that I would feel good physically. Sure I was unhappy with my pre-op weight, but this nausea and physical starvation (not hunger) is making me feel so radically unhealthy and ill. I know everyone says it gets better... but I don't think I can stand much more of this. Do most people have this relentless nausea and disgust towards food? Please know that I'm not trying to be negative, but right now there are no positives. At this point the weight loss isn't worth it. I hope that one day it will be.

    Update

sorry, no giving up allowed, lol. I talked to my NUT last night and he suggested trying some soft Proteins . . . A Protein shake made with milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, refried Beans. You might try some of those and see if they help.
  14. Thanks Ann! I had a check up one month post op....everything was fine. I think chewing is one of my problems. Baby food consistency is fine like yogurts, mash...I thought about flying back if it doesn't get better. Tonight I had meatballs soup and was much better. Solids are my enemies for now.
  15. I found a different brand (it's organic and actually seemed "better" than PB2) at Vitamin Shoppe. The brand I bought is Just Great Stuff: http://www.bettylousinc.com/products_detail.php?id=287&ref=0 I bought a container of both the Peanut Butter and the chocolate peanut butter. They are both amazing and taste incredible mixed with the plain Greek Yogurt! I've also seen the PB2 on Amazon.
  16. Our doc allows only 1 ounce of food per sitting. It doesn't sound like much, but it seems to be the right amount for me. I have been having refried Beans for about a week. It sounds gross but I have been taking the 1 ounce refried beans and mixing it with a small (think baby spoon) spoonful of cottage cheese. Once it heats up, it makes it a little cheesy and helps thin it out a little. I have really enjoyed it and despised cottage cheese pre-surgery. The beans have not made me sick, but I had trouble with eggs. I tried some scrambled egg beaters on Monday night and the doc thinks that is what caused the swelling that landed me back in the hospital on Tuesday (no stricture, just swelling). Another suggestion for you since it sounds like you're willing to try yogurt! I have been in love with Chobani 0% Greek Yogurt (1 ounce) mixed with a spoonful of PB2. Since it is nice and thick it almost tastes like I am eating a spoonful of really soft Peanut Butter. I've tried the one that is like Nutella and it is just as delicious.

I was on full liquids on day 3 and moved to pureed foods at around 10 days, which is when I could have ricotta. Ricotta kind falls in with yogurt so check with your plan as far as when that is OK to have. I have only used My Fitness Pal..almost continuously for the past year, and have been really pleased with it. Sorry, I wasn't super creative, it was actually nice for me to have simple choices at that stage. Lots of yogurt and soup..lol. Good luck to you!

Wahooo girl! I hope to be there right with you on the full liquid phase by Wednesday (2.21.18). I can have protein drinks, strained cream and regular soups, clear liquids, Greek yogurt thinned down with Fairlife fat free milk. Nothing that has fiber in it--so green smoothies are out. I figure I will get some jars/cans of tomato bisque, poblano soup, etc and strain them and add protein powder to them. Also, I can have V-8 which also makes a tasty "soup" with protein and spices, heated up to warm it. I think I remember I can have jello sf pudding as well as the jello, popsicles, sf fudgesicles. I'm gonna try mixing Premier Protein with SF pudding or unflavored jello and see if I can churn it into ice cream. LOL. Will see. I'm with the others. Ricotta Bake won't come until puree phase for me, which will be in about 3 weeks.
  19. Hello, I had my banding done on July 3rd. By July 7th, I developed an appetite and couldnt live on just liquids so I took a chance and ate a yogurt and clam chowder Soup. Everything went down great, I dont feel a restriction. On day 5, I ate a bowl of fruit loops with milk and survived. Later that day, I went to Target and accidentally swallowed my gum and was freaked out thinking I was going to puke while shopping but everything is fine. I don't seem to have problems eating, Im tempted to try a slice of pizza but am a bit scared. Should one be restricted immediately after the surgery or not until the first fill? Anyone else out there that has been able to eat without problems? Has anyone tried to eat and ended up with problems? I'd like to know what other people have experienced. Thanks D.

    Help On Weekend

Do you eat out all weekend? Uf you do then you need to plan ahead and bring foods with you and also have a plan of where/what you can eat on the go. (for example; I can have black bean soup at panera or a veggie burger minus the bun at burger king) If you are eating junk at home get it out of the house! garbage is garbage whether it gets there by eating it or tossing it. Just toss it! replace with healthy snacks/food. Laughing cow cheese wedges are great, fresh fruit, Greek yogurt, etc. I found that not planning ahead was a big problem and I have been working on always having a plan.

    I Am Ready!!

Greek yogurt, sugar-free pudding, Jolly Roger popsicles (they're AWESOME), and some V-8 or V-8 Fusion Light (to get your veggies in!). Tea and chicken broth taste really good after your surgery - the warmth makes your tummy feel good.

    Grrrr!!!!

Anige, I feel you pain. I have four kids, and it takes a good month for it to go through the entire house. In the fall, I start my kids on acidophilis chewables (its the good bacteria in yogurt) and it seems to help them fight those bugs off. I take them too (but not since the band, I forgot to ask my dr). Anyways, my kids only got a small sniffle so far this year (knock on wood). Good Luck!

    Mushies--how do you make them?

I'm with Jenn on this one. I did not "make" any mushies. I just ate things that were already mushie. Cream of wheat, oatmeal, yogurt, chili, creamy soups ........ If they weren't quite mushie enough, I used my teeth to chew chew chew .

    Hungry and frustrated!!

Bandster hell is a very real thing, trust me I know! I had my surgery 12/21/12 and I go for my first fill this Friday. I feel like I'm hungry all the time. I try to reach for Protein first: string cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt, Protein shake. At lunch, I eat deli turkey and a veggie or fruit. Protein first! And lots of Water. At 3 weeks post op you should be able to eat soft cheeses or yogurts. Personally, I count calories and protein, not carbs. I know if I eat enough protein first, I won't have room for any more carbs. I do eat carbs, but I count every calorie. It must work, because I'm down 25 lbs. Best of luck to you. Hang in there, it does get better.
  25. Hi there, I'm in week 5 and I'm not feeling great. I started my soft solids this past week and I've been sick since Sunday. Sunday I was stupid and I had one chicken finger. I chewed and chewed and chewed, but OH I was so sick. I thought I was going to vomit and I was sweaty all over. But it passed and I was okay about 30 minutes later. The next day I made myself some tofu and the same thing happened, just not as severe. And now it feels like something is stuck! I feel it all the time whether I'm eating or not. I don't want to eat anything at all because it feels so terrible now. I have gone back to Soup and yogurt. How do I get this unstuck?? Please help!
