Congratulations on your upcoming surgery! It sounds like you’re prepared and have a wonderful support system. I had a gastric sleeve done 18 months ago but am now getting ready to have a revision (gastric bypass) on August 8th due to severe GERD. I wish I would have just had the bypass instead! Going through the two weeks of liquid diet can be tough but just keep your eyes on the prize! Swanson sipping bone broth is great to have on hand before and after surgery since it has a lot of protein. Remember to sip, sip, sip your water constantly after your surgery and get your bariatric vitamins ready (I take Barimelts.) I’ve rewatched a LOT of YouTube videos in preparation for my surgery; they’re very helpful and motivating. I know you’re going to do well! Be sure to keep us all updated! Best wishes!😁

Aaand here was go again round 2- 20 years later
Sunnyway replied to Ethel6's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had RNY in 1990 and regained all I lost. I always blamed myself but now know that the surgery failed due to a fistula between pouch and stomach. I didn't know that revision was even possible until 2020, just before the pandemic struck. I started the bariatric program in early 2021. I discovered that I am a food addict with trigger foods: sugar, wheat flour, rice, white potatoes, and processed food. I cut out those foods and the result was fantastic! I lost 70 lbs prior to surgery. Despite this success, I went ahead with laparoscopic revision surgery on 12/21/21 at age 73. I weighed 247 at the time of surgery, down from 317. Unfortunately, I fell in that very tiny group of bariatric surgical patients that develop serious complications. Ten days after my revision surgery, I was airlifted back to the hospital with peritonitis and sepsis, caused by a rupture of the jejunum below the anastomosis. I was hospitalized for 7 weeks and underwent three endoscopic procedures and two open surgeries before they finally found and corrected a residual abscess. I left the hospital with a 15-cm long open surgical wound, which took 8 more weeks to fully close. I am now fully recovered and am back to exercising daily. The endoscopic procedures stretched the new anastomosis so I have no more restriction than I had pre-surgery, so I still have to be very careful about what I consume. I typically go through month-long stalls and then drop a few pounds. I do lose inches during the stalls. I've dropped from size 32/4X to size 20/XL and now weigh 214 lbs., just past the 100 lb loss mark. After being on a restricted diet for over 16 months I struggle with near-irresistible cravings in the afternoon and evenings. The clinic wants me to limit intake to 800 calories. 😱 It is daunting because I know I will never be able to go on a "maintenance" diet and must continue to avoid my trigger foods forever. Even when I choose protein snacks in response to cravings, each snack adds 100 or more calories to the daily total so my daily calorie count is between 900-1200 calories. (I will gain weight at 1500 calories.) I've done a trial of weight loss drug CONTRAVE but had to discontinue due to side effects. This is a horror story, but don't let it dissuade you from your revision. Complications are extremely rare. -
Does Anything Help Hair Loss?
MandaJ replied to SoCalEm's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I posted this to answer someone else but wanted to share my answer with you too. My dietician said hair supplements & collagen DO NOT WORK! Stop wasting money & time with them. Said collagen is empty calories. And on supplements, just because it says “hair doesn’t mean that’s where your body will apply it. Your body will use it where it’s needed & hair generally isn’t the priority to your body. PROTEIN is the ONLY thing that will keep you from suffering from hair loss. So meet your protein goals as set by your doctor (usually 60-80g protein/day for women, 70-90g for men). -

Surgery day questions--Assistance please.

I am curious how long it took your doctor to complete your surgery? My surgery took about 2.5hours I think. I had thr SADI-S and I was one of my surgeon's first patients for that procedure. How long was your hospital stay? I stayed 4 nights. I had pretty bad nausea and some vomiting. My husband just had the same surgery with my surgeon and they are better at managing the nausea now since they've done this surgery a lot more since I had mine 2 years ago. He only stayed 2 nights. How was your doctor's bedside manner? My doctor has a fantastic bedside manner. He is very down to earth a personable. What can I expect when I get to the hospital before surgery? They will check you in, then you will go to a room and have you change into a gown and then the nurse will come in and start your IV. The surgeon will come in and discuss the procedure and also anesthesia. What was your biggest struggle at the hospital and at home? I had a lot of nausea in the hospital. I never had a lot of pain. Once I was home, my biggest struggle was drinking the protein shakes because my taste changed and they were so gross. When did you go back to work? I was not working at the time of my surgery. If there was one thing that you could have changed, what would it be? I would have done it a LONG LONG time ago! What did you pack to take to the hospital? I packed a change of clothes, a book, my phone and charger, my own pillow, and Aquaphor for my lips. Good luck on your surgery! It will go by fast! I didn't create a password. I used the option to register/sign on with my Google account. It's similar to signing on with your facebook account. The Android app doesn't have that option so I would have to create a second account.. -
I hate protein drinks! Any protein pills?
Esi replied to lexie007's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh no! Was the soup very hot? Protein powder can clump in heat. Maybe try letting the soup cool a bit? My oatmeal cools for 15 minutes before I add protein powder. Protein powder is also excellent in pancake batter and cookie batter. -

I will try this! I found a Greek yogurt with a good amount of protein too -
Yes! The dr said to drink room temp, warm, hot only for the first week because if cold, it causes construction inside. Makes sense. So I went ahead and drank a cold Premier Protein shake and was fine. I am so hungry!!

June 2022 surgery buddies
Adria.Martin replied to Jessica1024's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hey all! I had DJB-S on June 29. Recovery has been a little rough. I can’t stand most protein shakes/drinks since surgery and I’m having some trouble getting my clear liquids in everyday. That means I’ve been in the infusion center a few times for IV fluids, so that I don’t dehydrate. I can tolerate some foods just fine (yogurt, oatmeal, cottage cheese) and others don’t agree with me at all (tuna and salmon). I’ve not been as active as I think I should be, but I’m pretty weak. I’m hoping this week I will be able to turn a corner. Shoot me some tips and tricks about proteins. I hope you’re all doing well! -
Did someone tell you that your shakes had to be room temperature? I was told to try all different temps of beverages and drink it however it goes down best. I have been drinking my protein shakes cold since day one. And if you are allowed caffeine try the premiere protein caffe latte. It has caffeine in it. It’s very tasty.

I just finished 3 days clear liquids and I was able to drink premier protein clear and Gatorade zero protein. I don’t use protein powder at all.

I was sleeved Thursday 7/14 and I am only allowed clear protein. I have protein powder but it’s disgusting in water. Any advice.

Doubling up on Protein
ShoppGirl replied to IWant ToDelete MyProfile's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What if you did the clear protein drinks? They are not thick at all so maybe they won’t fill you up. -
Hi ladies! So here’s my situation, I had RNY surgery July 6th and everything has gone as expected and what was explained to me. Smooth sailing until yesterday and today. I’ve been expecting aunt flow and she’s coming slowly but surely. I woke up yesterday feeling great. I had a Protein Shake and went for a short walk. Shortly after returning I started to feel so sick. Like what dumping syndrome feels like. All the symptoms to a “T”. I couldn’t understand why and thought that maybe I drank my shake too fast? There was literally no explanation. I laid down and laid low for the rest of the day. My stomach was angry so I just had popsicles, broth, Water and 2 bites of plain Greek yogurt at the end of the day because “live and active cultures”. Most of it felt ok going down but not for HOURS after the possible dumping episode. Skip to today, I woke up feeling ok. My stomach mostly just felt a little tender but I decided to try and power through a Protein water at least. It took me 3hrs to finish it and now I feel just awful again. Not as bad as yesterday’s episode but generally not well. My first thoughts were maybe it’s the whey or lactose. Yesterday’s shake was a fairlife which has no lactose but I believe does contain whey. Today’s protein water (Protein2o) contained whey isolate. But then I started thinking maybe it’s my PMS symptoms just wreaking havoc on my insides and because I’m still healing maybe it feels more severe? I purchased some vegan protein to try tomorrow. But does anyone have any input? Should I call my doctor? Let me know if I’m missing any information that might help this all make more sense. Ugh just feel terrible and need relief.

Good news, your probably going into ketosis, which burns fat. Bad news, feeling like you have the flu is typical at that stage. Keep up your water and protein! It should go away in a day or 2.

Hello Everyone, New to posting looking for some support. My surgery is July 21st. On day 8 of pre op full liquid diet. I was just wondering after reading through so many comments and replies I wanted some help and understanding about how I’m feeling today. Well day 8 pre op 11lbs down, I feel absolutely terrible, I wake up full blown headache, bad taste in my mouth, and stomach so nauseous. Its hard for me to just get it together. I feel so terrible. I thought I was supposed to be feeling great by now and used to it but I am definitely not. Harder and harder to sip protein, and taking me eternity to finish one bottle of core power 42g. My stomach feel so gross. Please help me get thru this.. is this normal?

@KevinS62 @HealthierMe2022 @MsGina thanks for the updates! Glad everyone seems to be on the mend and it’s nice to have this thread to go through this together. Day 3 post op for me today, first day of full liquids so I am going to start with a protein shake. But I’m a bit scared! No idea why because I’ve been able to swallow just fine and take a full size Tylenol without any trouble. still a little pain at the top of a deep breath in but it’s better than yesterday and better again than the day before. sleeping propped up is more comfortable but it gives me a headache. Tylenol has thankfully helped with the headache. I’m coming off the tramadol today/tomorrow if all continues to go well. my JP tube is the most annoying thing and I’m very eager to get it out. Like now would be nice but i think that’s going to be Wednesday when I have my follow up.

Hi Kevin, I’m so happy things are going well for you. I think I’m starting to turn a corner. My surgery was 7/12. I also had a hiatal hernia repair. I agree the hiatal hernia repair is where most of the pain is coming from, my doc said that he kinda tightened up the opening of the esophagus to match the size of the new tummy so that is also why it’s probably a little harder to drink/eat too much. I ended up having to go in and get IV Fluids yesterday because I was unable to take in more that 10 Oz a day. I discovered today (like you) that if I took my pain meds regularly, I had less problems. I already took in 8 Oz of water in my first half hour of being awake. The IV gave me energy so I think I’ll bet back to walking outside. I’m so hopeful that things are on the mend. Now to figure out how to get at least 60 grams of protein in.

Hey all. Day 2 Post-op. Thought it was time for an update. Surgery was 9 AM on Thursday, 7/14. During surgery, the doc repaired a Hiatal (sp?) hernia. I am thinking that's where most of my pain is coming from. That night I had an issue taking medicine and it got me coughing non-stop for an hour or so. Was not good. The nurse had me take some warm broth. It helped. I still have the cough, but not as consistent. Kind of a tickle at the bottom of my throat that I can't get rid of. I was discharged yesterday afternoon after the surgeon came in and saw me. Overall a good/great experience and I would recommend Dr. French and the Crescent City Surgical Centre for their nurses, facilities and staff. The day of surgery I weighed myself at 289. Out of curiosity, I weighed myself last night at 296 or something. I attribute that to all the fluids they pumped into me. Plus all the broths I drank had a ton of salt in them. No worries on this. Just thought I'd add for the update. I have some rough reflux/heartburn and some gas pain issues that I'm dealing with. Overall not too bad I guess, and about what I expected. At least I don't feel like I'm dying. A few times I took too much water or broth in and found it is very very uncomfortable. This is something I will need to continue to work on. Oh, and before I forget, Norco helps for pain. I'm on a clear liquid diet for days 1-6. I'm already tired of beef/chicken broths. This morning I had a protein powder/water shake and now sipping a black coffee. Both were on the dietician's planner/menu thing. My plan today is mostly rest and recouperation, but I will get up and walk a little. I will contine working on figuring out how much is too much when sipping water or broth or whatever. But...typos No regrets.

I’m a week out from surgery and yes I’m hungry. I had the lapband for 10 years and never once felt hungry. I am still weak feeling. I’m now eating protein shakes, broths, jello, Greek yogurt and I added a scrambled egg. The egg did help. I did read that when you don’t get enough protein you will be hungry. I can’t eat more than I am.

I love the Premier Protein shakes, I still drink one every single morning since surgery. Never heard they couldn't be drunk cold, I have been drinking mine cold since the first day home from surgery with no problems at all.

Are you adding protein to your water ? You could try that to get it in. -
Food Before and After Photos

Was missing my dad terribly the past few days so made some Korean food.- cheesy tteokbokki with fish cake strips, kimbap (or gimbap), pickled radish, kimchi, spinach namul, and pickled cucumbers and sweet and spicy gim. I also threw in a yogurt with a peach and granola along with a protein shake for my coffee and an individual bag of pretzels which I’ve counted but may end up not eating because I’m halfway through work and still have half the kimbap, the tteokbokki, pickled radish, spinach namul, and kimchi.
