    August 2023 Surgery Buddies!

Thank you for responding! My bowel movements are daily so that isn't the issue. I've read stalls are common, but I wasn't expecting one only 3 weeks post op! May I ask, you said you checked with your doctor when you had a stall? Then you had a revision? I had a RNY, what more could they revise at that point? I'm sticking with the program..don't really have a choice even if I didn't want too...major surgery done..no going back. 😋 I know its fairly common to experience these stalls, but, it doesn't make it easier its still frustrating!

    August 2023 Surgery Buddies!

I’ve been undergoing revision on my 2004 gastric bypass. I’ve noticed that my hair looks and feels thinner. I hadn’t connected it to the revision. Thank you!

Home Thread...for the thread homeless :)

Happy B-Day Angela!! I was late going in today and I am already home. My hands just hurt. I see the ortho on Tuesday so maybe he can work his magic. I had surgery on the left hand in 2006 and the right in 2007 but because I am still doing the same work all of my symptoms are back. I think I am going to look into the voice activated software. I have many many years to work. Kat-That job sounds perfect. Gives you a little extra money without taking up a bunch of your time. Suzie-How did it go? I have been thinking of you all day. Tomorrow is the big day....I am glad you will finally be getting some deserved rest even if it is part of your recovery. You are not going to know what to do with yourself. Michelle-I agree with Kat, it sounds like the flu or something....I hope you feel better soon, there is nothing worse like being sick to your stomach and having to take care of little ones. I forgot to tell you all that last week I swear that my band had slipped. I had the worst chest pain, reflux and kept PBing everytime I ate.....except for 3 cupcakes that I managed Friday and then Sunday everything was back to normal. I hate this band sometimes...especially when this happens and I still have at least 60 lbs. to lose. Have any you considered revising to something else? I am seriously considering the sleeve. Talk to you all soon. Bethany
  5. I don't know about revisions, but yes, vertical sleeve and gastric sleeve is the same. The procedure is called vertical gastric sleeve.

    Anti-Semitism In France!

Why not? It's certainly been done before. The earliest scripture is generally considered to be the “Pentateuch”, the first five books of the Moses: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, & Deuteronomy… though there is some scholarly evidence to indicate that the Old Testament Book of Job may actually be the oldest book in the Bible. These writings were passed down from generation to generation for thousands of years. By approximately500 BC, the 39 Books that make up the Old Testament were completed, and continued to be preserved in Hebrew on scrolls. As we approach the last few centuries before Christ, the Jewish historical books known as the “Apocrypha” were completed, yet they were recorded in Greek rather than Hebrew. By the end of the First Century AD, the New Testament had been completed. The oldest copies of the New Testament known to exist today are: The Codex Alexandrius and the Codex Sinaiticus in the British Museum Library in London, and the Codex Vaticanus in the Vatican. They date back to approximately the 300’s AD. In 315 AD, Athenasius, the Bishop of Alexandria, identified the 27 Books which we recognize today as the canon of New Testament scripture. In 382 AD, the early church father Jerome translated the New Testament from its original Greek into Latin. This translation became known as the “Latin Vulgate”, (“Vulgate” meaning “vulgar” or “common”). He put a note next to the Apocrypha Books, stating that he did not know whether or not they were inspired scripture, or just Jewish historical writings which accompanied the Old Testament. The Apocrypha was kept as part of virtually every Bible scribed or printed from these early days until just 120 years ago, in the mid-1880’s, when it was removed from Protestant Bibles. Up until the 1880’s, however, every Christian… Protestant or otherwise… embraced the Apocrypha as part of the Bible, though debate continued as to whether or not the Apocrypha was inspired. There is no truth to the popular myth that there is something “Roman Catholic” about the Apocrypha, which stemmed from the fact that the Roman Catholics kept 12 of the 14 Apocrypha Books in their Bible, as the Protestants removed all of them. No real justification was ever given for the removal of these ancient Jewish writings from before the time of Christ, which had remained untouched and part of every Bible for nearly two thousand years. The first hand-written English language Bible was produced in the 1380’s by John Wycliffe, an Oxford professor, scholar, and theologian. The invention of the printing press in the 1450’s made the Bible widely available to lay people. In 1496, John Colet, another Oxford professor and the son of the Mayor of London, started reading the New Testament in Greek and translating it into English for his students at Oxford, and later for the public at Saint Paul’s Cathedral in London. In 1516 the scholar Erasmus published a Greek translation of the New Testament. This milestone was the first non-Latin Vulgate text of the scripture to be produced in a millennium… and the first ever to come off a printing press. Martin Luther translated the New Testament into German from Erasmus Greek-Latin text and eventually went on to publish an entire Bible in German in the 1530’s. William Tyndale wanted to use the same 1516 Erasmus text as a source to translate and print the New Testament in English for the first time in history. Tyndale showed up on Luther's doorstep in Germany in 1525, and by year's end had translated the New Testament into English. The first complete English Bible was printed on October 4, 1535, and is known as the Coverdale Bible. John Rogers went on to print the second complete English Bible in 1537. It is a composite made up of Tyndale's Pentateuch and New Testament (1534-1535 edition) and Coverdale's Bible and some of Roger's own translation of the text. It remains known most commonly as the Matthew-Tyndale Bible. In 1539 the Archbishop of Canterbury hired Myles Coverdale to publish King Henry VIII’s “Great Bible”. It became the first English Bible authorized for public use. In the 1550's, the Church at Geneva, Switzerland, was very sympathetic to the Protestant reformers. Many of them met in Geneva, and under the protection of John Calvin, the Church of Geneva determined to produce their own Bible. Their New Testament was completed in 1557 and the complete Bible was first published in 1560. It became known as the Geneva Bible. The Geneva Bible became the Bible of choice for over 100 years of English speaking Christians. Between 1560and1644 at least 144 editions of this Bible were published. In 1568, a revision of the Great Bible known as the Bishop's Bible was introduced. Despite 19 editions being printed between 1568 and 1606, this Bible, referred to as the “rough draft of the King James Version”, never gained much of a foothold of popularity among the people. With the death of Queen Elizabeth I, Prince James VI of Scotland became King James I of England. The Protestant clergy approached the new King in 1604 and announced their desire for a new translation to replace the Bishop's Bible. This "translation to end all translations" (for a while at least) was the result of the combined effort of about fifty scholars. In 1611 the first version of the King James Bible was published. The Anglican Church’s King James Bible took decades to overcome the more popular Protestant Church’s Geneva Bible. One of the greatest ironies of history, is that many Protestant Christian churches today embrace the King James Bible exclusively as the “only” legitimate English language translation… yet it is not even a Protestant translation! It was printed to compete with the Protestant Geneva Bible, by authorities who throughout most of history were hostile to Protestants… and killed them. Throughout the 1600’s, as the Puritans and the Pilgrims fled the religious persecution of England to cross the Atlantic and start a new free nation in America, they took with them their precious Geneva Bible, and rejected the King’s Bible. America was founded upon the Geneva Bible, not the King James Bible.

Hi All!! I was a revision from Lapband to sleeve to Rny for severe GERD and I knew going in I would lose slower since I was a third timer. I’m satisfied with my loss. Started at 251 at pre-op and now am 208. My way of losing is so odd. I drop to an all new low and then within 1-2 days I’m up 4-5 lbs and then jump up and down in those 4-5 lbs and then stall and then after another time drop to a new low. Anyone go through this as well? Diet stays same, I think it must be hormones...?

    Anyone here?

I went to see my doctor today. He put me under the fluro to check my band. The placememt is fine, no slippage. He did the barium swallow test and saw that it is taking me longer than normal to pass the liquid. He tried to do the unfill and couldn't get to my port because, not only has it moved to what seems to be a land far far away, it is also upside down. He is going to do the revision and cut the cathedar. Apparently since I have lost so much weight it is all curled around. It is outpatient, and I am going to sit patiently until he can squeeze me in. I'll keep you all updated!

You can have a band put around the pouch or you can get Stomaphyx where they tighten up your pouch and stoma. These only help if the problem is that your stoma has stretched so you don't get that full feeling any more. If the problem is that you need more malabsorption than RnY gives you, there is the DS. If the problem is in your head and you won't do the work, eat a lot of slider foods, don't exercise, sabotage yourself, etc. ain't nothing you can revise to that you won't learn how to get around.

    Calling all April Bandsters!!!!

Turler - Hey girl - I'm thinking I may need a scar revision surgery in the end. It depends on my skin and weight loss, but if I have to go to PS for any lifts or tucks I'm going to see if they can fix it. The doctor told me to use mederma (sp?) on it. I have some and am going to start using it. I hope it will help. I was also told to use vitamin E on it - I think that works for stretch marks, I'm not sure about raised scars. I haven't lost anything in almost a month. I'm trying not to get discouraged. I'll admit part has been my fault. I did great for three weeks and then last week came. DH and I ate out every night. My girls were in Florida visiting with the grandparents (my mom and dad). We ate BAD food - I'm talking Steakhouses, Italian, Pizza, Bread, Red Lobster. Things I don't need to be eating...although I didn't eat much of those things (the band kept me from doing that - YEA!). Then this past weekend we went to the beach...that didn't help me any! I still feel guilty about last week. I didn't log my foods, because I knew I'd done bad. I should go back and find out the calories...it keeps me accountable, but the past is the past and I'm determined to put it behind me. I was shocked and still am that I haven't gained anything! I just knew I'd gained some weight on Thursday when I weighed in. I know what to do though - this week is a new week and I'm starting over. On the ticker. Go to the site and setup an account. It will ask for your weight. Enter your ORIGINAL weight (before surgery), not where you are now. Then when you make your ticker enter your current weight. I don't think you can backtrack for your ticker. Let me know if that helps you...If not we'll try something else.
  16. Finally back into the mid 170s, after ballooning up to almost 200 during my unfill/revision/healing etc in March/April. New current pics, old pic is at 260 a few days before the original surgery

    Anyone here?

I really don't remember how long it was before the day I think the port actually came up, but it was like close to a month, I think. Unfortunately, it was not for a few months after that when my doctor FINALLY confirmed this. I had revision surgery in August. In considering this surgery I asked about the low profile port also, but my doctor convinced me against it. I don't remember why, but whatever it was it must have sounded rational. I knew shortly after the revision surgery that the sutures didn't take AGAIN, but my doctor was convinced they had and that all was fine. (He is great at appeasing me). So now, I see him yesterday to discuss my symptoms and thoughts about my band having slipped. He sent me for a CT scan. I had the test, and the doctor on staff read the results and reported to my doctor. My doctor "promised" me that my band is fine...but I "have a pnuemonia" in my left lung. I have no idea wtf that means, but apparently I'm pretty sick lol. Needless to say I am asymptomatic, and have decided to go for a second opinion on Monday. Oh, but in all this my doctor said I was right and that my port did in fact come up again. Apparently, I have very resistant stomach muscles. I'll keep you posted. I have a question though. Has anyone felt that they have been getting sicker easier since the rapid weight loss? Like maybe more susceptible to things, maybe from compromised immune systems or something? I've been sicker this year than I can remember previous years.

Who Has Lost Over 100 Pounds?!?!

I hit the 323 lbs lost mark and then gained a little - it was my first gain in almost 5 years of Banding. My band was causing me a lot of problems so I had to have my first unfill! I revised to the Sleeve so that I don't regain all of that weight back! My band was a mess inside me. The tubing was wrapped around my internal organs and the scar tissuew as massive.

    My Band

MsMaui thank you for posting your story. I think its important for people to know what kind of experiences are out there. Some complications are because of the band, some are exacerbated by the band, and some have nothing to do with the band. It's not clear from your initial post where you were coming from with respect to the above three purposes for posting about complications. it may have been helpful if you included that. I noticed the same thing in your other thread about "Thinking Of Revising to VSG good info". The point of the post was vague and it is natural to think the worst when the poster doesn't clarify. It came across as misleading and possibly deliberate. As far as your problems, that's just awful and I'm sorry you've dealt with it this long. And I'm sorry you're losing your band but it doesn't sound like it is compatible long term with your existing conditions. I hope VSG or whatever you choose is a better solution and this stops being a negativ issue in your life. There's too much great stuff to experience without being hindered by pain or even Internet arguments. Best wishes.

    UK Sleevers

Hello Helen, Nice to meet you. I think my surgery took around 1 hour 30 mins but it was a straight laproscopic procedure on a virgin (so to speak) stomach. So basically I don't really know what you should expect for a revision and open surgery I am afraid. Regarding pain it was fine, please don't worry. I was dosed with morphine directly after surgery and my nausea from the anasthetic was treated very promptly via intravenous drugs. I was walking around the day of the op, but I was done laproscopically so I don't know how you will be I am afraid. I was leak tested the day after using liquid that I had to swallow in front of an xray machine. I don't know if they do it differently in the UK, this was in the Czech Republic. I was on liquids for 2 weeks and mushies for the next 2 weeks and then normal after that. I think different surgeons have different regimes though. Please keep me posted on how you get on. Do you still have the slipped lapband inside you? I can send you my diet plan if you like, PM me for it. But your own doctor will have their own plan I would hope. Where are you getting this done? All the best, Jane

    Calling all April Bandsters!!!!

I forgot I was even subscribed to get these updates as this is the first one I've received in about 8 or 9 months. Where did I go? I went to Dr Anthone in Omaha back in October and had my lap band removed and was revised to duodenal switch. My band had proved useless for weight loss and slipped till it was sitting directly against the bottom of my esophagus, making it impossible to get solids down, and often couldn't even get liquids down. It's no fun waking up in the morning choking on your own spit. :mad2: I hope the rest of you have better luck with your bands, but if not don't be ashamed to look into revision to a different type of surgery. Your health is what matters. If you want info on the DS (duodenal switch) check out Duodenal Switch or Duodenal Switch Forum (DS) . Happy Holidays! Karen
