Driving?
Momonanomo replied to Terri Lynn1383837796's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine said as soon I was off pain meds, and when I felt like I could. I drove within a week (even though I didn't take pain meds after 24 hours) check and see what your doc's guidelines are! -
My dic said 2 weeks or until off pain meds

I met with the endocrinologist at OSU (Dr. O'Donnel). He reviewed my blood glucose logs from the past month and said everything was in the normal range. He said after surgery I would likely be off the insulin and oral meds all together, which was good news. I then had another round of blood work. Today I received a message via MyChart. My A1C had dropped from 10.1 to 7.3. The fructosomine test (shows a more current reading than the A1C) hadn't came back from the lab yet but he said that it would be even lower. He said that he had passed on his approval to move ahead with surgery. I received a call from the case manager a short time latter. She said everything was good to go and she had passed on the information to my surgeon. She said I should be getting a call this week to schedule my Pre Admission testing and surgery date. I am definitely psyched that everything is finally going forward instead of two steps back!

I get sleeved on 9-20-2012. I get moments of anxiety where I question whether I've made the right decision or not. I know that I have. I guess I'm faced with this same anxiety when it comes to any big decision in my life. I start my liquid diet this Thursday the 6th for two weeks. Friday is Pre-Op. Friday the 14th is my EGD and then the 20th is D-Day! I went through a whole month of waiting for the appointments to get here and now they are here and the anxiety is sneaking in! I guess I'm excited AND scared at the same time . I am looking forward to being healthy. It's not a size or a look that is my goal. It is to be off medications and living healthy. I want to have the ability to go for a walk with my husband and not worry about passing out 1/2 way through the adventure. I want to go to the zoo without passing out or having to sit every 5 minutes because of back and knee pain. I want to fly without infringing upon my neighbor's space. It's been too long coming for me. Early on when I made my decision to get sleeved, I went out and purchased some protein powder and a few other things 'just to see' how horrific it was going to be. Honestly, it isn't going to be that bad for me. Since I HATE chocolate and sweets for the most part, it's going to be hard for that reason. I don't think the protein shakes are that horrible especially since I'll be using Vanilla flavored and you can add just about anything to that to make it palatable and versatile. My husband and grown sons are amazing with their support. Only one other person knows and he is a co-worker. The only reason I told him is because he's getting sleeved on 10-23-2012. We'll be sleeve partners at work. I'm lucky in that respect. The only thing that I worry about is when the pounds start dropping off that I don't sabotage myself. I see a bit of success and then I have to go and ruin it by overeating to celebrate. Crazy, I know. I can do this. I will succeed. This forum has really been a source of comfort and knowledge. I thank you all!

Haaa you probably aren't the first to do that. I didn't have to do a liquid diet. Just low fat for one week. I lost 8 lbs that week.

I have gone past a stall into plateau territory. I have been bouncing between 180-185 for about 2 months. I have increased exercise and have been steadily tracking food. I think I am losing inches. It isn't that I am unhappy, I am only 25-30 lbs away from my weight loss goal, so I feel pretty good. I don't know if this is a plateau or if this is where I stop. I am about 7 months out. I have started running and feel good about that. I have a goal to complete a 5K in a few months. Anyone have any thoughts on distingusing a plaeau from just being done?

Congrats!! Best wishes I can't wait to get a date... paper should be submitted to my insurance sometime this week.. I really pray they approve it

Question about protein drinks
ShrinkingPeach replied to newmebithebypass's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Every nutritionist is so different. Some are very strict and some not so much. I was on regular foods at 5 weeks out. I did one week Protein shakes after surgery. 4 weeks soft foods then week 5 I reintroduced regular foods slowly. I am sure they have their reasons, ask more questions? -
Question about protein drinks
BLERDgirl replied to newmebithebypass's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My program just said 60gm protein a day, 64 ounce of fluids. The food stages were 2 weeks full liquids, 2 weeks, purees, 2 weeks soft foods, then regular food as tolerated. We could decide for ourselves if we wanted 3 meals, 3 meals, 2 snacks, or 3 meals and 1 snack. I was given jello, tea and non chunky soup in the hospital. I also didn't have a pre-op diet. -
Surgery Date & Anxioud

I was 27 when I was going through the process of getting my surgery done. Although I never got put on the liquid diet pre op, I was on it for 2 weeks post op. My hair did thin out but it wasn't noticeable since my hair was really thick. The only person who did notice it was the guy who styles my hair lol. It has been the same way since August. I just got it cut into a bob last Friday. My only complaints about the whole thing was having nausea for like 2 and a half months. Weaned myself off the Prilosec last month after an endoscopy I've had. The nerves about getting the surgery didn't hit me til I was seconds away from passing out on the operating table lol It does feel like a quick surgery cause one minute, you're in the OR and then the next you're waking up in recovery being asked how much pain you're in and how you're feeling. Just remember, unless you've always had problems with growing it out, hair always grows back. In my opinion, the surgery is worth it. I feel great and I'm off most of my meds. You've got this, you'll do great. 🙂 Hw-273 Sw-226 CW-155 GW-130 Size- 4 or 6, Small in sweats. Medium in shirts. depends on how it's cut or made. Soft food diet.
captainjason replied to Melissavlasblom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my surgery back in late April, and last week I had my first plateau of weight loss too. This week, I've started losing again. It might have nothing to do with your change in diets; it might just be your body taking a quick break from losing weight. Keep following the diet given to you by your doctor and nutritionist, and you'll be losing weight again in no time. -
I had that post-op, gasX strips helped a lot and I found I handled iced or warm tea better then water. It went away for me about 2 weeks post-op where I could drink without a need to burp or pain. For some reason plain water which I never had an issue with was a no go for me until just this last week (7weeks post op now).

you have to be 100 committed and determined. its life changing you will never be the same again.. you will never eat the same again and its a long recovery process i am pre op 2days home from hospital and in so much discomfort.. the thought of not being able to just grab a handful of blueberries that i love whenever i want made me cry life won't be normal as far as food for at least 6-8 weeks and even after that you won't be able to eat freely.. but if your getting sleeved for medical purposes to make yourself healthier its then worth if you have truly already tried everything with no success.. then go for it thankfully my insurance covered my surgery.. hope this helps..

I hated the chewables they made me want to throw up. I switched to regular vitamins after about two weeks. I take a men's multi-vitamin in Target's house brand 3x a day and vitamin b-12 one x a day, and Citrical petites Calcium Citrate 3x a day. I also just started taking fish oil for my cholesterol once a day, it is still a little high. All of my labs have come back normal, besides the cholesterol. I would call my doctor and see what he would suggest. Good luck.

calories at 10 weeks out
superstartover replied to NicoleLpn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I ten weeks 700/900 calories a day Focused on 60 protien and lower carbs -
no. only hot cereal like low sugar oatmeal. No cold cereal until at least 6 weeks, and even then it needs to be healthy cereal soaked in milk. Don't risk the discomfort at only 3 weeks out, your pouch is still sensitive and it can't digest fiber yet. I had the same question when I was early out because I wanted crunch.

My name is Augusta. I am 38 years old, happily married for nearly 19 years, a proud mother of a 17 year old boy and a 15 year old girl and I just got banded almost 2 weeks ago. For me it was an easy choice to make. I asked my pcp if there was anything new on the market as far as weight control goes and he told me about the lap band. (I'm a worrier of the worst kind so I don't listen to the news, if you're wondering how I didn't hear of it before now) So, I did the research. By the end of the week I went to a seminar, in another week I was having a consultation with a surgeon, in another week I began my 3 month pre-approval path for my insurance and on August 28th I was banded. I was terrified. Being a worrier, I required valium to get me in the door and cried until the moment I was put to sleep. I had the best surgical nurse ever. She held my hand and whispered in my ear how everything was going to be fine. It was to her voice and my prayers that I went to sleep. Bravo to the Norhtwest Weightloss Surgery team. My doctor, Dr. Montgomery, took very good care of me and I came out just fine. I felt pretty crappy the next morning and for a few days after. I had my gall bladder out almost 16 years ago and there was some scar tissue to deal with causing a bit of pain for me, but now 1 week and 6 days later, I'm feeling pretty good. Still a bit sore, but feeling more human now. Since August 18th, I have lost 20 pounds. Since my banding, I have lost an even 10. 10 pounds in 13 days.....I keep asking myself if I'm dreaming. Saying goodbye to the 290s and the 280s in less than 3 weeks is a bit bizzare for me and I can't shake the feeling it's all not real. I am 273 now and can't wait for the rest to come off. My goal weight is 160. Anyone out there who needs to talk about anything, please feel free to email me. I look forward to building lasting, banded friendships. Augusta

I have blue cross and was able to get in with Scottsdale bariatric center in AZ. I have heard others are going to Texas. There really are now really good clinics here, or maybe it the restrictions are getting in the way here. Dr Robin Blackstone is very experienced. There website is scottsdalebariatric.com. I did all my stuff from here, with the exception of the prelimary visit (they scheduled a 5 hour visit with all the docs on one day) and will go out for a week for pre-op, pre op class surgery and post op class in December Good Luck with finding someone, and keep in touch!

Hi all, I am a 63 yr old Grandma who is happy to be a part of your group. I am on day 3 of my 3 week pre-op diet and will be banded on Oct 12 at the Maples Clinic in Wpg. Man. My personal goals are to lose 75 lbs and become physically fit. Putting on socks without huffing and puffing will be a sure sign of success for me. Do I wish I had done this sooner, you bet, is it too late for me, no way! Have been reading the posts while i made my decision, and now hope to help inspire others to take control of their weight. Grams I am fairly certain that given a cape and a really nice tiara I can change the world!

1st are you staying overnight in the hospital?? I did - ended up an extra night cuz when the doc came at 1 the day after surgery - I was having major gas in the shoulder pain and was afraid to go home in that kind of pain (me & vicoden don't get along well) and it's just me and my grandson (16 at the time) the pain shots put me to sleep - so he said I could stay and they gave me a shot at 1:30 and truly I could have gone home that night if I was thinking - I was good by day 3 and back to work day 6 (desk job) Still would have a little gas but the strips helped - walked a little hunched over when I first got up but once moving did good - Whats your doc orders for eating after you get home - I had to do full liquids (incls cream soups - yogurt - pudding) for 10 days then mushies for 10 and soft for 10 then regular. Home made stuff is better than canned - Low fat - sugar free - The creamed soups saved me. Secret - to my success so far - is that I have my MIND totally into this band - I eat healthy 98% of the time - I allow treats 2% of the time - I weighed my food in the beginning until I learned what 4 oz of meat/fish looked like - I got this little one cup bowl from target that I use to eat from and I eat off sandwich plates and use condiment fork & spoon - I keep a food diary and count calories and Protein grams - I try to keep my calories between 900 - 1200 a day - and if I want a treat - I budget those calories into my daily totals. I primarily eat baked fish for dinner every nite - with 1/2 c rice and veggies - I may eat out once or twice every two weeks I go to the gym anywhere from 3 -5 times a week - I started out just walking on the treadmill for like 30 minute mile with no incline - I am now walking 3 miles in 1 hrs on an incline of 4 to 6 - and with no incline I am doing 3.5 in 1 hr - I can walk a whole song on 4.o speed.. I got a trainer a month ago - so I now work weights twice a week and the other days I do cardio. This is a lifetime lifestyle change for me - I am totally serious about losing this weight - to me have major surgery is a big frickin deal - and I didn't have it just to mess it up... I am not that big of a fool.. I am using my tool - but that's all it is - it's just a tool - the band it's self will not cause you to lose weight as you can eat around it if you choose (I was just told about a lady who ate Oreo's & milk like 5 days out - How incredibility asinine) The band does require will power - the will power to eat healthy to follow your doc's orders and to exercise. If I as a middle age lady who has been fat most of her life - and was a total slug bug and do this anyone can. Don't get me wrong - it's not always a walk in the park - but I can tell you that I feel 10 yrs younger - feel so much better about myself and LOVE shopping in the regular stores - got a size 6 pair of pants today (this is a fluke cuz I am normally a 10 or 12) but they say 6 and I am going to wear them inside out. Those are my secrets - I think positively - Do I miss the junk - ya sometimes - but not that much and now a days if I want a treat I can have it - 1/2 piece of cake even a whole piece - NO LONGER THE WHOLE CAKE :sneaky: But usually my sweets are sugar free fudgecicles - sf pudding - sf yogurts - or fruit... Bander's Rules -Small bites - eat slow - chew chew chew

Well i finally met with the surgeon today and luckily I've had all my testing with the exception of blood, chest xray and NUT consult. So in a perfect world I would be planning my surgery date....BUT.....due to a few meds I take daily( for anxiety and depression) I may be held up another three months. It seems that since I can't swallow pills post surgery I will have to crush my meds. If my meds can't be crushed then I have to try alternative meds that can be crushed. However, I would have to stay on these "new" crushable meds for 3 months to make sure they work before the surgeon will give me the green light. Anyone have this issue?

First Doctors Visit.
Bandista replied to Sbharris74's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi there, very excited for you. I have my psych eval and nutritionist appointments this week then the appointment with the surgeon will be booked -- following that the date for the actual surgery. Maybe we will be Bansters together! I think it would be abnormal not to feel a bit nervous. I get worried that I won't qualify for some reason but I know that's silly -- so long as my BMI is 40+ I will be fine. I am a bit borderline, however, so that's been a stressor. Hopefully some others can tell you better what to expect tomorrow. I plan to ask a lot about after-care -- the fills, etc. I have a notebook to write down everything -- my own questions as well as things said in the appointments that I may forget later. Good luck -- let us know how it goes!
