  1. Hi Chrissy, While I don't have any insight for you on what your going through, I wonder if you might have some for me... Why did your bands fail you? It sounds like you lost weight with the band, how did it fail? I wish you the best on your upcoming revision.

    Complications after Sleeve Surgery

I try to give you the footnote version of my complications. I am a band to sleeve revision. On June 3rd, I had my revision surgery. On June 5th, a leak was detected on my final leak test. I was rushed to surgery for the leak repair. It was successful, but I could not eat or drink anything until the 25th of June. I had a problem with recovery, and was in ICU for 4 days. The TPN was a liquid form of nutrients, 1800 calories a day fed to me via a central line in my left arm. I had drains due to the leak repair. I recovered slowly, but have since recovered. My leak was attributed to the extensive damage the band did to my stomach. Complications with a virgin stomach are very minimal. Leak stats for any surgeon should be = or < 1%. Other complications can occur with any surgery like Shanda mentioned. If you have done your research on your surgeon, and feel confident in his skill then be certain that you'll do fine. We're all here to support you, and help you through this process. It's okay to be nervous. It's a life changing surgery, and you have to be confident in your surgeon choice. I knew that I would die an early death from co-morbidities. So, the fear of being fat outweighed the fear of surgery. Even with my complications, I would still have the surgery in a heartbeat without a second thought.

    Complications after Sleeve Surgery

I had extensive complications with my revision from the band to the sleeve. I would do it all again in a heartbeat, and without a second thought. I've posted all my complications in threads and in my blog. I think most of them are posted in my blog on here. If you click at the top of the page where it says BLOG, you can find mine, and read back through my complications.

    Folks Who Have Had Complications

Hi! I like that you have compiled this list - it gives anyone with a new complication a place to look for someone who has experienced something similar. I did want to let you know I had just 1 leak (1 time) - thinking maybe you are thinking of the abscess - it was discovered before my leak, but caused by my leak. Best of luck with your journey! I know that revisions are a bigger risk so lots of prayers your way!
  6. I would like to share my lapband experience. I was banded in 2003, at a weight of 245 lb. I initially lost 75 lb in about the first year, but only after several balancing acts that was adjusting. I was either too tight to eat anything solid OR I had little to no restriction. Fast-forward to now, weight is (was) 220 lbs. Started working with a new doctor. 6 adjustments and 1 EGD later I had enough of the band. I was revised to the sleeve 3 weeks ago (Nov 6). Re: Risks- The sleeve is a more involved and invasive surgery. This naturally makes the risk of complication higher than the band, at least in the short term. Leaks seem to be the worse complication from the sleeve, but it is very rare. I don't have data to support but I'm pretty sure you are only at risk for a leak for a certain time period after surgery. On the other hand, many complications from the lapband can occur at any time post surgery. Scarring, erosion, slipping, and possible autoimmune response can all be pretty serious. Re: Recovery- My recovery was longer after the sleeve than wih the band. Of course I was 9 years younger then. After the band I was fine to go back to work after a few days. This time with the sleeve I had 2 full weeks off and then 1 week part time before returning full-time. I know some people can return to work after a few days with the sleeve, I personally did not feel well enough to. Re: Weight loss not as much?- Thise who are successful with the band can lose down to goal, but is generally slower than with the sleeve. Again looking at the long term, many with the band re-gain, and often end up heavier than when they started. Not sure about statistics with gaining back after the sleeve, but I would guess it is not as much. The band does work for some but unfortunately does fail many times. Do all the research you can, connect with people from both "sides" and see what you feel is the best choice. Good luck on your journey!
  7. Hey guys, just want to stop by and give you guys an update, and boy oh boy was I tempted to just let this one go by. Well as you all know I had revision surgery September 30 and was unfilled down to 3cc's at surgery. Now to me 3cc's might as well have been a complete unfill. So here I am 6 weeks later and UP 6 POUNDS!!!!!! Yes, you heard me right and I didnt studder, 6 fricken pounds. Am I surprised? Not really. I'll admit that I got LAZY I enjoyed sleeping in until 6am instead of getting up at 4:30am to go to the gym. My eating post op was going pretty good until my husband (how dare he) took me on an all inclusive 7 day trip to Cabo for my 40th birthday and I Lost my fricken mind. I swear when I got on the plane the scale said 185 (and I know it did because I weighed myself on the scale at the airport where you weigh your luggage). And at the airport on the way home it said 197...I PROMISS IT DID. There was alot of drinking and late night eating on that trip. And honestly I know I didnt gain 12 pounds in 7 days but I knew that I hadnt been eating right and drinking alot of alcohol plus not getting in my water (unless you take in water by sitting in the pool swim up bar?) So 5 days home and the scals was down to 190, 10 days home and there it remained 190 sometimes 191. THANK GOODNESS today was my follow up from surgery appointment where she gave me a fill and I was never so happy in all my life. Theses last 6 weeks have really reafirmed my decision to get the band. with out it I truely have very little will and I really need the restriction that it gives me. I still am a fat girl at heart and in my mind. I still have work to do. C25K here I come and 180 by Christmas!!!!
  8. So here I sit. Minus 93 pounds from the very first time I walked into my surgeons office. The problem is that 93 pounds lighter is not my goal and to top it all off I have been at the same weight for the past year. The actuality of all is that though my total weight loss has been good I have no one to blame but myself for not being at goal. The 1st year I was Wonder Woman, eating all the right things and at the gym 5days a week, you know doing all the right things. Then when I had that stuipd slip and the revision surgery I got lazy and got out of the habit of going to the gym. My food choices are still pretty good and my restriction is where my surgeon says it should be BUT no gym...and no gym for me seems to equal now weight loss. So for the past 9 months I have been making excuses about my band not being quite tight enough and that has been an outright excuse!!! I had a swallow test done under xray and the bottom line is that my and is as tight as it can be. They held up a straw to the xray and thats when I saw it. That tiny little opening the diameter of a straw, and the dreaded words from the doctor' "You are at maximum capacity for your band...any tighter and you are going to be in trouble"...well trouble is something that I dont want. So now what???? Get off my ass, get back in the gym and do what I should have been doing the entire time. Workout, do the work I know I need to to get the rest of this weight off. No more excuses for me. Either I lose this last 37 pounds because I put forth the effort or I shut up and stop complaining about it when Im not doing all that I should be. I'll keep you ladies posted on my progress. :thumbup:I'M IN IT TO WIN IT!!!!

Dr. Ariel Ortiz at the OCC

First off, I'm so glad your hubby is completely on board- he's the person that's in the house with you and will be the person you really need on your side. As far as the other people in your life, they can have a seat. Your adult choices-especially ones you're making to benefit your health- are none of their business, especially your boss! How does she know what's right for you? Has she been a friend your whole life and is she there through all your weight struggles? On top of that- this sleeve is NOT easy. It's easier to do weight watchers and have a day where you "cheat" then get back on the wagon. But what would happen-your weight would continue to fluctuate up and down and you would be in the same position or worse this time next year. Right now if I didn't have my sleeve and I was doing some other program, I GUARANTEE I would've cheated and had something I wasn't supposed to. Having the sleeve and knowing something may possibly make me sick is deterrent enough for me- that was part of my personal reasons for getting the sleeve in addition to weight loss and having something in place to help me keep off/ control weight gain long term. The people who are saying these things to you should do some research on the sleeve before they chime in on what you should/shouldn't be doing. I would be willing to bet if you countered their opinion by asking them what they know about the surgery they couldn't even tell you what it is. And for sure the weight doesn't just fall off- you still have to work out to see good progress. Your supposed to exercise 60-90 minutes daily with this in addition to trying to drink all your water, all your protein, and take all the vitamins. Some people get the surgery and lose a small amount of weight and then nothing else (now that we're all together, I came upon a sleeve to bypass revision thread). Easy- I definitely don't think so.
  10. For a public school teacher, you would think you would have better reading and retention skills. You did not miss my response, bless your heart, I chose not to respond to you because you are now grasping at straws and inventing stories. The only somewhat truth is that yes, because, as I have stated previously, I do feel Dr. Illan is a good surgeon, I was considering him for my revision and had a very brief discussion with Omar about it, but later dismissed that thought because I prefer to stay in the US for my surgery. I never pursued it any further. This all took place several weeks prior to six of the seven woman coming forward to me. I did not and would not have considered it afterwards. I am curious, as myself and Bill are the only ones who knew about this, and clearly Bill hasn't spoken to you, why instead of trying to feed blown out of proportion information and lies to you to ask me, why doesn't Omar man up himself and confront me with his questions directly? I am perfectly willing to speak with him, if he has the cajones to do so. But, as he knows he is in the wrong, I don't suspect he does.

    Another Tummy Tuck Experience

Goal of the future scar revision is to move the incision under the tattoo down closer to where my underwear are and to remove more of the tattoo so that the incision looks more like a "handlebar" and less like a "grin". FYI: What's left of the tattoo is the half that was originally above my belly button so you can have some idea how much skin was removed. The tummy tuck didn't give me my 20 something stomach back but I'm happy with the results so far. The "final" result won't be apparent for several more months. Plus the lipo should help.
  12. I had my TT (muscle repair, no lipo*) on 1/10/22. Recovery was what I expected pain wise but not time wise. For some crazy reason I thought I would bounce back in a couple of weeks - NOPE! The first week I needed help doing everything (except wiping my hiney - thank God). The drains were removed on day 8 which did not come quickly enough. I haven't had any major complications, just a minor (small hematoma) that resolved on its own. I'm still a bit tender but I can now sneeze/laugh/cough without my eyes tearing up. My scar is healing ahead of schedule (per surgeon). I tried silicone tape (week 3) but it made me itch so I just massage my scar with coconut oil daily but I do forget some days. I will be having scar revision in the future but that was always part of the plan. I have a high belly button and I also had a tattoo around my belly button. Not one of my smartest moves but what can I say, I was 20 something at the time. My surgeon does not make "T" incisions due to blood supply concerns. Also, since the entire tattoo could not be removed, I didn't want a totally distorted tattoo. So my scar at this time is higher than both he and I would prefer. The scar revision is an office procedure with local anesthesia so I didn't object. I chose to "stage" my lipo after my tummy tuck. I'm scheduled for lipo on 2/28/22. Why you may ask. I'm having multiple sites done (knees, inner thighs, saddle bags, and flanks). By doing it in "stages" the lipo of the flanks can be more "aggressive" than if I had it with the TT.

    Folks Who Have Had Complications

I hate to be a downer but I have a sleeve complication and so wish I could go back and undo it, I tell people to be very very weary and that surgery is much more dangerous then some make it out to be. I've written my story a dozen times but it basically boils down to a sleeve in 2012, now in 2014 I have not had any solid food since surgery and I've been on liquid Vicodin on and off for over a year and a half just to get enough fluids down to stay out of the hospital. I'm now scheduled for a revision just to try to stop the constant pain. I've been admitted to the hospital a dozen times and been in the ER at least once a month for iv fluids and pain medicine for food getting stuck. I have severe esophageal spasms and the beginning signs of achalasia which basically means the sphincter that helps you swallow isn't functioning correctly and untreated that can lead to cancer. I try to be positive on the forums because I know complications are rare but I wish someone had told me prior to doing this how much of a risk complications have. I'd be overweight for the rest of my life and totally be happy if I could just stop the pain. All I can say is buyer's beware, this is not guaranteed to work and this one decision can ruin your life...be very very very sure before you take the chance. I was a happy and relatively healthy (besides a few comorbities) nursing student and now I'm 21, am just barely staying afloat in school and my health is pretty miserable which affects my whole life and will continue to affect my whole life until it gets under control. This is not what I signed up for and I would go back and stop myself from making the worst decision of my entire life any day of the week. Hopefully the revision fixes things and I'm being as hopeful as possible. I'm not trying to scare anyone here, just telling my story and hopefully I'm making sure you are 100% positive you are ready to take this leap because once it's done, there is no going back.

    Bariatric Surgery Do's And Don'ts

Great Info....still relevant so many years later. Thank you. I actually sent you a friend request on FB. I wanted to learn more about Dr. Alberto Aceves. I am also a revision surgery candidate. I had the lap band removed in October 2013 bc of complications. I couldn't do the revision at that point bc of too much damage and the insurance company didnt want to fund it. I'm now looking into Mexico bc of continued problems with the insurance company. Ironically, I already have the Insanity DVD also. Can't wait to get to the point where I can start it as well. I actually like working out so right now I feel like crap. Hope to get more advice from you. Thanks again.
  17. WOW!! Alot of great info! I go Thursday, Aug 16th, band to sleeve revision. I am both excited and alittle scared!
  18. Just checking in--you all know my crazy life. Insurance was giving my doctor such a hard time for port revision surgery, so he is going to use some machine to flip it manually? The surgery will be right in his office--it is scheduled for September 28. I am trying to research so I ask the right questions--will need to post a thread to see if anyone has ever heard of this?:biggrin:
  19. Sabrina~ I'm starting to run too. I stil can't run a mile but I'm walking fast. 4 miles per hour or around there. I signed up for a 5k run with my husband in May. I used to die after walking 1/2 a mile. Now I don't go to bed until I have walked/jogged or ran 5 miles a day. the weight is finally dropping again. 23 more pounds till I hit my doctors goal for me. 40 plus pounds for my personal goal. DD~ I must have missed your post on the revision. What did you have redone?
  20. Happpy New Year Everyone! Still here and still loking for the every so elusive sweet spot (for the 2nd time) My surgeon who has always been really conservative is taking it slow since my revision surgery. I didnt gain any weight over the holidays, but I didnt loses any either. I am still hitting the gym but my intake is tohigh, you remember how it is when you dont have proper restriction...At anyrate my next fill is at the end of the month and I'm hoping for to get closer to the "sweet spot" so I can finish up my weight lost. TTFN!

Dr. Ariel Ortiz at the OCC

When researching, the idea of the plication was appealing. I ultimately chose the sleeve for the following reasons: 1. The sleeve is permanent. I didn't want something temporary that could cause issues in the future. Also didn't want to have to have to self pay for a revision surgery if needed it in the future. After all my research on weight loss surgery, I didn't want to have multiple surgeries in case the temporary first surgery failed. 2. By removing the part of the stomach where the hunger hormone is produced, I was hoping to reduce my crazy appetite. 3. The plication is a newer procedure and I wanted to have something with a little more of a track record. Plus, this isn't a common surgery in the US. So if there was a complication that needed urgent attention, I wasn't sure help would be readily available. Good luck in your research. Being an educated patient will pay you big dividends!

    Need Mental Change

I had the same concerns when I started this process, this will be revision surgery for me because the lap band did not work for me....when I was in my psy consult I told her my concerns and she agreed that my concerns were valid and I should seek therapy, so I found a therapist and she has been great...she has already helped me and I've only had 2 sessions with her....when I told my friends who have also had WLS they just told me you can get the same thing reading a book....and I told them, I need someone who will have a verbal exchange with me, and a book cant do that... I would encourage you to seek a therapist...
