here of of sheer frustration
cute shoes replied to missyt's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I have had a similar situation. I had the original band done in Feb 2004. My highest wt was 280, I started to process at 267, day of banding I was 240, I lost down to 208 pretty rapidly but then lost momentum and stablized out at 220. Was so ashamed of gaining that I quit going in for fills. By end of 2005 was at 230. In 2007 was having reflux and forced to go back to see doc. She was extremely harsh with me. Why don't people who have never had weight issues understand that criticism of obsessive overeaters is never constructive and always harmful. Turns out my band had slipped and had to be repaired. Got a fill right after that. Still didn't lose wt, and again ashamed to go back. Gained to 235-240, joined Weight Watchers in Jan 2008, lost 15 lbs right away, then fell off wagon and gained it back and although I kept going to meetings for 2 yrs, just never could master the hunger (both real and head). Ihave an extremely stressful job and harsh working environment but with this economy, I cannot leave. I also support my elderly mother in an assited living facility. My boss is harrassing me about my weight and I am terrified I will lose my job. I called the surgeon's office and asked to see a different doc whom I had met at support groups and who seems very compassionate. I was so desparate I wanted to have my band removed and go to bypass. Just met with new doc on Monday. He wants me to have a fill and meet with a dietician. He says the diet has changed a great deal since I had my band in 04. It now focusses on Hi Pro and Low Carb. So I am going to do that. Will give it a try. I am not great at exercise. I find it boring (aerobics) I like lifting weights. But currently am too poor to afford a trainer. I previously had some luck with Wii and am having my son in law come over this weekend to help me re appropriate my spare bed room as an exercise room with my treadmill, yoga mat and Will. And I am here at this website to garner moral support. So "sheer frustration" I will be there for you and hopefully you will return the favor. -
Not sure what to do?
SoccerMomma73 replied to vicki s's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
There's a revision board on here and at least 1 thread full of sleeve to RNY revisions. I was a band to RNY and I'll tell ya what I've told everyone else. After the misery I had with my band I wasn't having anything but RNY, the success rates are the highest and I wanted nothing but the best. I had HORRID reflux with my band and absolutely wouldn't risk having similar misery with a sleeve. Sorry it's been such a long road for you! Good luck!!!! -
I have the lap band and am getting gastric bypass. They said that the lap band removal was denied because of the insurance coding. Something about having 2 procedures at once. It's been almost a month since it was appealed. I'm hoping this week I get an approval.

Revision sleeve to bypass
A_new_sara replied to Mrs Jackson's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
My insurance covers revision as long as it's medically necessary. So like the other gal said if you can prove that it's medically necessary to cure your GERD it won't matter what your BMI is because they'll look at it as a procedure not a weight loss surgery. I'm getting a revision to the bypass because of complications from my sleeve. They approved it in less than a day. And I'm only 167 pounds Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app -
Revision sleeve to bypass
James Marusek replied to Mrs Jackson's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am not an expert with insurance requirements. I suspect they might resist approval unless there is an underlying condition that needs to be corrected by revision. In your case the condition might be constant heartburn. This condition might be GERD. The sleeve will generally make this condition worse and that may be the logic for a revision. -
Stall/concerns post sleeve to bypass revision
I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ replied to lex2287's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
You're welcome! 🤗 I got my band in 2013, and within a year or so I hit my lowest weight and I got stuck about ten pounds above that number. For years I was stuck. I gained about another ten back after GERD, and I thought that I wouldn't be able to lose anymore weight either. But it's coming off. And as far as not feeling restriction... I feel/felt the same way, but this week I started eating grilled chicken again for the first time since before the revision, and now I feel soooo much restriction. My surgeon told me that I have some nerve damage from the band and that's why I wasn't feeling restriction. But I can definitely feel it now as I'm able to eat denser proteins. Previously I was still eating a lot of chicken that I made in the crockpot, so it was a softer consistency. I think you will notice more restriction once you're fully healed. You're early out still. Give it some time and just follow your surgeons eating plan and track your protein and water. You got this! Best wishes! -
Stall/concerns post sleeve to bypass revision
lex2287 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had sleeve to bypass revision on Aug 29. I have only lost 14 lbs. I had the revision due to severe reflux.. my dr told me he doubted I would lose anymore than I already have at my follow up Monday. It was really discouraging. I have about 80 lbs to lose and hearing I probably wouldn’t lose more with this surgery was a blow. I have been getting my fluids and proteins in with no issues. I don’t feel like I have restriction either. The scale hasn’t budged since I was 1 week post op. My concerns were shrugged off at my drs office and I didn’t know where else to turn. Can someone give me some insight or point me in another direction? I need this additional weight off too :( help. -
Stall/concerns post sleeve to bypass revision
catwoman7 replied to lex2287's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
14 lbs in two weeks is excellent. I lost 16 lbs the whole first month! (not a revision - I have a virgin bypass). people tend to lose slower after revisions than they do a virgin surgery - but again, 14 lbs is quite a lot. I wouldn't throw in the towel yet... -
Never Thought I Was Vain, But...(Hair Related)
Fort Bend Band replied to isign31's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I think that losing your hair and it's texture change is directly related to not getting enough protien in your diet. Protein drinks are good but they still are not as good as eating meat or fish. With protien suppliments and powders your body does not absorb as much protein as it does from real food. Step up eating protein and see if it helps. My MD always harps on eating your protein first and then worrying about veggies and starch if you can fit it in. Also, my good friend had the gastric bypass and she lost a lot of hair. When it grew back in it was wierd for a while but eventually went back to normal so hopefully it is a temporary situation. Finally, to the others talking about companies not having WLS on their plans. Unfortunately. this is becoming more and more common. My insurance has no coverage for any Bariatric anything...period. This is more cost effective for companies and what they pay in the short term for their employees health coverage. Unfortunately, they never seem to realize they will pay out more in the end with their employees having Diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart problems related to their obesity. My company is now even talking about making the employee pay more out of pocket for their health insurance if their BMI is over a certain percentage. I hear many companies are thinking about resorting to this. I think it is still an acceptable form of discrimination! -

Can a dilated pouch be trimed/cutback/resized during revision surgery?
Halloul replied to richj242's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
The dilated poach happens when you have the band for a long time & over eating along the years & vomiting. It's happens a lot with the band after years of having it . I had my band for almost 14 years & I helped me in the past lose & maintain my weight but I always had to put effort & diet when I gained a few pounds . It was the only available procedure at that time . I am revising to sleeve in two days , I hop the sleeve works for me . -
Can't decide sleeve or bypass
TheJuice202 replied to 100away's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was literally back and forth since August 2018. I finally have firmly decided on the bypass about 1 week ago. I have no GERD or acid reflux or anything like that. -
Can't decide sleeve or bypass
GradyCat replied to 100away's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I thought I wanted bypass because I didn't like the idea of them permanently removing my stomach from me, but two of my other doctors felt that bypass was too radical for me and wanted me to do sleeve instead, so I did. -
Questions about pre-op tests
Sai replied to kimberb's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had to have both, but I think my insurance required the endoscopy only because I had a lap band and had to prove there were issues (like gerd or whatever) to prove that the revision is best for me at this stage. I had an upper GI, it showed I had a dilated esophagus (2nd time in 9 years), but it wasn't enough since the doctor can remove the liquid, rest my esophagus for a couple of months, and then put the liquid back in. The sleep study wasn't mandatory by my insurance, I think I had to have it done because my surgeon is ultra careful. I had no history of sleep apnea. Do you have to have a cardiac clearance for surgery? That seemed to be the most important to my surgeon... -
I was sleeved 3 years ago today. Ask me anything.
Sosewsue61 replied to DaleCruse's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Did you start out with exercise, are you still doing it? When did weight loss slow down. So you must be struggling, or is there another reason you think you should have had the bypass (acid reflux?)? Are you considering a revision now? -
Pretty Much A Failure!
goal130 replied to cmoody821's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
MissE44, I so agree with you. I have a bf who got the gastric bypass and had to force herself to eat since she was never hungry. I thought id be the same but i was wrong. I must admit i had to take a diet pill today. I already cheated 3 times since my surgery last thursday. It wasn't a terrible cheat, but i did. The pill stopped the hunger. I'm just praying i can make it to my first fill. -
VGS to DS revision on AUG 5...any last minute advice?
MarkOrlandoFL posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had my VGS done 2 years ago. Failed...only end result was a 40 lbs weight loss. On Wed AUG 5 I am going in and having the DS performed. Any last minute advice to help me be successful this time? -
Thank you very much. I appreciate that. I had RNY surgery. “Not obese enough”??? If you medically qualified for the lapband then I don’t understand why you wouldn’t have medically qualified for the sleeve as well. They go by BMI and I believe it is the same for sleeve and band. (40 or, if you have comorbidities then it can be 35) It sounds like you likely used a general surgeon instead of a bariatric surgeon. Both are qualified to do the procedure but a bariatric surgeon is far more educated on the actual Bariatrics aspect. They are much more informed and actually take a couple of years to specialize in WLS. As opposed to a general surgeon who only learns the procedure and then does it. He doesn’t take that extra time to learn the ins and outs of it all. Even being on the smaller side of overweight, I still don’t understand why a surgeon would perform a procedure that has SO MANY complications and such an incredibly small rate of success. Why would he perform this operation at all? It is such common knowledge within the bariatric community that the band is a hugely bad idea. If you said you had it done several years ago then I might understand more, but you had this in 2017. The surgeon should be ashamed. Did he tell you the complication rate is far higher with the band than with any other procedure? Did he tell you people lose far less weight with the band and the rate of regain over a 5 year period is almost double that of the sleeve and RNY? My surgeon told me it won’t be long before we are seeing commercials saying “if you’ve had the lapband and had complications, call the law office of...” I’m very sorry this happened to you. I am super angry for you, to be honest. Your surgeon did you a huge disservice. I actually had a lapband for a long time and the loss was incredibly slow. After several years, I developed complications and nearly died. I had to have the band removed. I chose to also have a revision to RNY and it is a completely different experience. It’s so much better. If you continue experiencing pain or the other issues you mentioned, I would strongly suggest finding a new surgeon and having a consultation. Try your best to find someone who specializes in Bariatrics rather than just a general surgeon. I had a general surgeon with my band too because I really didn’t know the difference, to be honest. It was a huge mistake. I wasted a lot of years of my life with that awful band. Again, I’m very sorry. I’m seriously angry right now. I can’t believe these surgeons are still doing this procedure. Please don’t give up. I know this is hard. It’s so hard. But just remember why you did this. You wanted a healthier, better quality life. You can still have that. It may just happen a little differently than planned, that’s all. As of October 12, 2017, I am 4 months post op and have lost 100 pounds. I have reached my goal weight and could not be more ecstatic!

Question for Those With Suspect/Actual Strictures or Ulcers
talking mountain posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I am one month post-op (RNY gastric bypass) and have started having symptoms that could suggest a stricture and/or a marginal ulcer. Everything I've read seems to say that endoscopy (tube w/tiny camera down your throat) is the "gold standard" for determining if you have either of these conditions. However, my doctor is wanting me to go through an upper GI (studies have shown that these fail to find ulcers in their early stages fairly frequently). I am reluctant to go through a third upper GI in a month simply because that is a lot of radiation in a short period of time. So, my question for those of you who have ever had a suspected a stricture and/or an ulcer, did you go thru an Upper GI test first, or did you go straight to an endoscopy? Thanks! -
Did revision due to weight gain actually work for you?
froufrou replied to JulieCab's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had a failed sleeve - I did drop about 60 lbs with it but then started to gain. It was so stretched out. I lost a further 50 lbs with bypass. I’m now looking to do a distal to help shed the remainder of this weight I just can’t get off. -
Did revision due to weight gain actually work for you?
Tina Leo replied to JulieCab's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am near 2 months out from Bypass to bypass revision. Weight loss is slower this time around, but I'm actually glad of it. It is consistent and manageable- I feel good. My vitamin levels have been stable - a million times better than after my original bypass. I have a long way to go yet, but so far, worth it. -
Gastric Bypass for Senior Citizen
JRT Mom replied to Too old to lose?'s topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Medicare will pay for it as long as you meet the criteria. I think it was over 35 BMI with a comorbidity. There was a three month "supervised" diet (during which you don't have to lose weight), and documentation of past failures with diet alone. You must be obese for 5 years, and have a psych evaluation. I was nervous because I had been told by another office that Medicare wouldn't pay for revision surgery (failed lap band) which was odd because Medicare hadn't paid for the first one. But they came through and my bill was paid. -
Revisions...Lap to RYN
kissalvoe replied to toma0526's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I was supposed to have a revision done yesterday but they had to abort my RNY surgery after removal of the bags because it eroded my stomach so now I have to wait 3 months, hope I heal and hope the insurance will cover another go at it before I can get the bypass. I had my band placed in 2010 and gained all 80 pounds I lost right back.
