    Death

That is not accurate. Gastric Sleeve Surgery and Bypass have a less than 1% mortality rate... actually less than gallbladder surgery. Talk to your surgeon about the risks of surgery.

    360+ pounds?!? help!

I was 387 on the day of surgery. I just hit 4 months post op on the 17th, and I'm down almost 80 pounds. I had the bypass. Hey Cervidae, Wow fantastic job...

    360+ pounds?!? help!

I had the bypass on Dec. 1. Started at 302, now at 264 (including pre surgery diet loss). I choose RNY because I was diabetic, and had a lot of weight to lose, and i was hoping I would have dumping (and I do) because I was a sugar junkie, and i needed a tool to help me stay away from it! It made me feel more confident, knowing it was the "gold standard" in bariatric surgery. My surgeon trained under the doctor who invented this surgery (Dr Mason, I believe), so that made me feel confident in his abilities, as well. I am thankful for the malabsportion because it also helps me lose weight and will help maintaining my loss. I will take Vitamins etc the rest of my life. I realize that. good luck...only you can make the decision!

    360+ pounds?!? help!

Depending on what your insurance will cover, I am a big fan of giving the sleeve a shot at any starting weight. With any surgery, your final weight potential is dependent upon where you begin, and it's not like bypass circumvents (I really wanted to say "bypass" two words in a row LOL) that rule. This may even be a situation where you use the sleeve for its original purpose, i.e., the first step of a BPD-DS. But ask yourself if you think your problem is carbs and sugar. If you are like me and just have trouble with quantity and constant hunger, the bypass will probably add little to what you can accomplish with the sleeve. However, if you are sugar crazy, the bypass will do a lot more to knock that out, and will probably offer you substantially more than the sleeve. Please discuss with NUT and MD! This is just a start.

    360+ pounds?!? help!

You will have great success with either surgery. With the sleeve i have good restriction and feeling of fullness. With bypass you also have malabsorption and dumping

    360+ pounds?!? help!

Please keep in mind .You want to make the best decision....no one who has had only the sleeve can tell you what bypass is like. The most informative posts in my opinion is the people who have had revisions. They can tell you what the deal is from both perspectives and personal experience not just tell you cookie cutter remarks. I have a friend who had the sleeve in August.Their were some complications and she vomits and have been to the ER.Also developed GERD.Hervdaughter had the same sleeve surgery and she is doing fantastic no problems whatsoever. I have lived in misery for far too long with the lapband .I am revising to bypass.I originally was going with the sleeve until I did more research.I have damage from the band to my esophagus and stomach.Soncutting 85% of my stomach out is not going to happen.I am a breast cancer survivor and I am not worried about malabsorption. What I am worried about is seeking a revision down the road to bypass because I made the wrong decision yet again. If you down the road find that you need a second surgery to bypass it is tough to get insurance to pay for a second procedure. Think about it long and hard and make sure you have a very experienced physician.I had a surgeon who was only able to perform lapbands and sleeve so you know what that meant....I changed to a more experienced Doctor in the same practice who can really advise me from all perspectives. I am revising to the bypass once and for all because I cannot go through a 3rd surgery.I am making the correct decision finally. The gold standard .I got too much weight to lose to play games.

    Death

The statistic I saw was the mortality rate was like, 0.01% for sleeve. A little less for band and a little more for bypass.

    Painful Fills

Gosh I'm sorry your fills are so painful. Thats stupid that they cant give you some sort of freezing. My doc uses something called lidocaine I think and it works basically right away. My port is under my muscles and I just had a tummy tuck revision so I am super swollen. Fills are so painful I nearly pass out and that is even after my doc freezes my stomach. Thankfully my doc has a fluroscope machine thing that he uses now when I get a fill. Last week I got a fill using this machine and it didnt hurt at all and I didnt even need freezing. Maybe you should ask about another method of getting fills. I hear ya with not wanting to go back. Even after my last breeze of a fill I am still afraid to ask for another!

    Death

@@beccaconaty87 I am glad to see you are reaching out and doing some research before plunging forward. From all the responses you have received you can see most of us would not have chosen to move forward if the death rate you quoted was true. What's funny is most people don't understand how much safer these surgeries are given how dangerous staying obese actually is. Your best chance of getting to a healthy weight, keeping it off and extending your life is by choosing one of the WLS tools like RNY Bypass, Sleeve or even the lap band. I am not sure of your current statistics like weight, height and age but I can tell you, the longer you stay obese the more long term damage you do to your body. Everyone always asks me if I regret having RBY Bypass. My only regret is waiting until I was 51 to have it. I damaged my joints, my spine and my kidneys by staying obese so long. I am now 53, 5'10" and I weight a slim 161lbs. I look fantastic and aside from my severe spine arthritis, I am healthy!! I no longer have diabetes, high blood pressure, anemia, sleep apnea, high cholesterol. My stage 3 kidney disease is in remission! I used to wear a size 24 jeans/26 slacks and 26/28 tops. I now wear a size 8 jeans/10slacks and Large or 10/12 top! I would not use death as the reason not to have this surgery. Focus on the reasons you are considering it. Do all your research and follow all of the instructions and you will do fine. People have complications and even die when they don't do what they are supposed to. Getting up and walking after surgery is critical to your success. Drinking all your fluids, Protein and Vitamins is critical to long term health following any weight loss surgery no matter how much you don't like the taste of protein. I promise you, every ounce of work you put in is so worth the end result! This decision was the best thing I have ever done for myself. Best of luck to you!!!!

    Headache and Liquid Diet

The study is for state of Louisiana employees or their families who have a certain insurance that doesn't normally do weight loss surgery. It was like a lottery were you put your name in and 500 people will get surgery over 5 years. They also offered a strictly liquid diet component I wasn't interested in. You get the call you been selected. You go down and go through a ton of screening. If everything is find, you start the two week liquid diet where you must have lost four pounds or you are kicked out. On the last day of the fast, you go back for more screening. If everything is fine there, your file will go before a board who decides yes or no on surgery. Also what type with 75% of the participants getting the lap band and 25% sleeve/bypass. There are also only four surgeons approved to do the surgeries. I think that is pretty much it. They cover the entire surgery with me paying travel costs. So please ask questions if something I said doesn't make sense. I feel like I am dying right now.

    360+ pounds?!? help!

This is why it is so important to research. Just because you choose bypass does NOT mean you will have dumping, when people assume that, they are not as educated on the differences between these surgeries. There is only a small percentage of people who get dumping syndrome and if you follow the rules, it doesn't happen. Also bypass has the malabsorption process which AIDS in weight loss. There are other health factors that play a role in which surgery you choose. I big differentiator is whether or not you suffer from reflux. If you do, your best option would be bypass as bypass cures that disease, same thing with diabetes. The sleeve also puts some peoples diabetes into remission but it can make reflux even worse or if you don't have it, this surgery can cause it. Both surgeries require labs and Vitamins for life. You can lose a lot of weight with either surgery. I would suggest going to a class or taking an online class and learn as much as you can before deciding. I was going to have the sleeve and after learning about the reflux issue, I chose the bypass. I thank goodness everyday that I did. I am down 135lbs and 10lbs from my goal. My starting weight was 310.
  13. Hello all, New to the forum here. I had a gastric sleeve done back in 2012, the first 2 years were great and I was happy with my weight loss. After that, for the past few years I've been putting weight back on, so far nearly 50 lbs. I am seriously considering going to Mexico for the sleeve to bypass revision. Has anyone else had this surgery? What was your experience? Were there any hidden fees for revision surgery? Thanks all!

How did you decide your goal weight?

My doctor suggested 160 which I thought was WAY too high, but I think he was just being very conservative, Then I arbirarily put my own goal at 150, but by the time I got down there I realized I could get into the 40's pretty easily so I revised it to 140. Figured I didn't have a snowball's chance of getting any lower because of my age, but I was wrong. I don't want to get ANY lower than I am right now (135-137) because things are starting to droop. You gotta take into consideration your height and age.

    Wondering

My friend had a gastric bypass and after she lost some of her weight she became pregnant!!! As a matter of fact, her sweet son is 6 months old now!!! So yes, there is hope and I will be praying for you!!! hang in there!
  16. A good friend of mine had a bypass in 2000. She lost a lot of weight had a beautiful baby and became an alcoholic. She would drink a couple of bottles of wine a night and just couldn't figure out why her weight was creeping back on. She is now divorced and back at her original weight but she did give up drinking altogether this year. I don't think she ever looked at the surgery as a tool...she seems to think it is supposed to be a magic solution that should require no effort.

    What did I wait for?

Thank you for sharing, my surgery is scheduled May 5th I can't believe it's happening I already have a Lapband, it has given me some problems so going in to revision to sleeve, I am panicking, Lapband surgery was much easier, I guess the fact of getting my stomach cut escalates the panic to another level. I'm praying for strength to not chicken out, my Wheight is currently out of control due to the Lapband had to be unfilled, gain 20 pounds in 5 month... Trying hard not to and working out a lot I still gained them! Reading this thread made me realize my feelings & fears are more common than what I thought, I am fearful to have a nervous breakdown this Tuesday and not follow through with the surgery, but if I do I will never forgive myself! I am finding comfort in prayers and positive thoughts! Thank you again for sharing and being supportive through your own experiences.

    Lapband Complication-Needs Removed

I’m a band to SIPS DS revision (8/8/17) I did not have Barrett’s but I was getting terrible reflux with my band. I was also getting stuck on water! I’m so glad to have my torture band removed. It is so nice eating solid food without struggle. I had also gained all my weight back plus some. Since my revision though, I’ve passed my lowest band weight. And definitely couldn’t be happier. Good luck, I hope your next journey goes smoothly!
  19. Hi. After some research, I'm basically sold on the procedure, but need some help narrowing down the best surgeons and facilities. I'm going to be a self-pay patient but price is not my priority. I want the best surgeon and team. I live in southern CA so am close to resources in Mexico, Orange County, San Diego, Palm Springs, or Los Angeles. Who would you recommend and why? I've read numerous recommendations for Dr. Ariel Ortiz, but the thought of Tijuana scares me to death. Many have said the facilities are top notch and the hotel is 5 star, but the photos don't look 5 star to me. 3 stars maybe with a big pool. I would never go anywhere near Tijuana for any purpose, so I cannot imagine having a medical procedure there. don't want to be blinded by college trips to the scummy bars on Revolucion, but quite honestly, I associate the city with filth, stench, crazy taxi drivers, poverty, panhandling, crime, preschoolers selling gum, etc. Another option would be Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles, but I saw that their physicians have not done anywhere near as many Lap Bands as Dr. Ortiz. They've done tons of gastric bypass surgeries, but that is not what I want. The reviews are not as consistently glowing as those for Dr. Ortiz, but the aftercare program seems to be more structured. Ideas? Thanks. Kelli
  20. Good afternoon, everyone. I'm new here. I was looking for some kind of forum where I could interact with others like me. I think I may have found it. I live in South Texas, and I had a sleeve gastrectomy in Mexico in 2009 when I was 35. I initially weighed 340 lbs and lost 149 lbs. and went from a size 32 to a size 14. My goal was a 12, but I was really happy. I was exercising 5x a week on the elliptical for a whole hour nonstop! I kept the weight off for approximately 6 years. Unfortunately, all kinds of tragic events started changing my life. In 2014 my father passed away, and I took it really, really hard. I ended up on Xanax and Ambien. In 2015, I got divorced. In 2016, my mother passed away. In 2017, I was transferred from a job I really enjoyed to a brand new location with all different people to work with. Then the COVID Pandemic kept me teaching from home for a year and a half. It was literally one heartbreak after another. Rather than looking for actual help, I helped myself... to pills, alcohol, and crap food. Over the past 9 years, I regained all my weight. Even though I still felt restriction in eating (i.e. only half a burger or 1.5 slices of pizza, with no sides or drinks and I was done). I was 10 lbs away from my original weight before my sleeve. Last year, though, my school district sent out an email stating that WLS was now covered by our insurance. I was so excited! I looked into it, made many calls, and thought coverage was out of the question because I had already had a surgery. Our insurance covers "one surgery per life." However, since my first surgery was private pay, they went ahead and accepted covering my revision to a bypass. Today is my 18th day post op. I've lost 42 lbs altogether since May 11, but only 10 of those lbs since the surgery. I feel a little blue because I was hoping for more than a 10lb loss in 3 weeks. I lost more weight at the beginning when I started a semi-liquid diet to prepare for surgery. I was doing 3 shakes and one solid, no-carb meal. I know that revisions are slower than virgin surgeries. I am doing as much reading and research as I can. I just can't help it, I guess. After my sleeve, the weight loss was phenomenal. Right now I am consuming 450 cals, 60 g protein, and keeping my carbs under 40g. I am walking around my house (not outside because South Texas) 4x a day and was told I could start on the treadmill this coming Monday. Maybe I'm doing something wrong? I'm also trying to find ways to consume fiber without a lot of carbs. I've eaten 1/2 cup of pinto beans twice but, man, that's a lot of carbs. I wanted to try raspberries, but I'm afraid of the little seeds getting stuck in my sutures. Any advice, thoughts, suggestions?

Will i be able to become pregnant after gastric bypass?
  22. Hi All, I have the Sleeve about 16 months ago and had an overall good result, lost about 55% of my excess weight. I was pretty surprised though that I really never had much feeling of restriction after the surgery, never got sick, never felt overly stuffed, and my hunger only decreased moderately. I kinda felt like most of my weight loss was really attributable to the lifestyle changes I made associated with the surgery, although it definitely helped some. I recently was diagnosed with an inflammatory spine disease for which the only real treatment is aggressive weight loss and moderation of inflammation. I'm considering having a revision of the sleeve or conversion to a bypass and would really like to find someone great in the Los Angeles area. My previous surgeon was fine operatively but didn't really listen to me and I'd be hesitant to discuss my current situation in that setting as this feels like a really big decision given my recent diagnoses. I'm considering Dr. Feiz and Dr. Dorwaiswamy. Any other great people I should consider who are great surgeons but also willing to spend a minute listening to concerns?
  23. I did like him but hated the drive for aftercare, and, and complications. The drive was bad from Eugene, but to Bend no way. Dr Hughes was wonderful in taking on my fills when we moved here, and just continued my care when I had further complications and revision.
  24. Who's That Girl

    Holy Heartburn!

Wow! I too have had acid reflux since 2004-2005 and was told after my endoscopy last week that I may not be a candidate for the band or sleeve. From what Ive been told and what i've read, acid reflux worsens in some (not all) after the sleeve. I know what it feels like to have this crap linger for what feels like days. They've upped my dosage of Omeprazole (??) and hope to know this week from doctor whether I can or can't. I'll be bummed out if it's a no go because i don't even want to consider gastric bypass. May have to keep doing it old school and I see what that has gotten over the years. You're sleeved so hang in there and hopefully it gets better. :aureola:
  25. This is coming from someone who has a lap band since the end of 2006. I originally tried to have an RNY at the time the insurance denied it. I have never had real success with my band, lost 40 lbs and that's it. I throw up a lot. I'm now about 25 lbs more then when I had surgery. I wasn't the best patient had a lot of traumatic things after the band happen but regardless I always feel hungry. I'm now in the process of trying to get approved for the RNY. If I could go back I wouldn't of gotten the band I wish I would of fought for the other surgery. But I was only 23. I recently went to my group nutrition meeting their were two other prior lap bands and we were all still obese and having revisions done.
