March 2020 Surgery Folks Come On in!
biginjapan replied to Mello1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just had bypass a few days before you and I've been on purees (and full liquids) since the day I left the hospital (day 3 post-op). I haven't had any real issues except with Greek yogurt (I guess I'll be a bit lactose intolerant for a while, common with bypass, not so much with sleeve). But I had the sleeve 3 years ago so have already been through this once before, where I had to wait a couple weeks before going on purees. In both cases, waiting, or starting right away, I've been doing well. I've been drinking blended soups, pureed veggies, soft tofu, cottage cheese, etc. Just go slow and start with small amounts at first. Try one new (pureed) food per day. After a few days, try adding another pureed food for a second meal. Your sleeve will let you know what's working and what's not. -
I agree that most cereals probably aren't a good idea (nutrition wise) but I have seen a lot of high fiber/high Protein ones out now. Personally, cereal and I do not like one another now (and I used to love it). I don't know if it swells up like bread or what but I am very uncomfortable eating cereal. I can do granola w/ my yogurt in small quantities though. I do better w/ the crunchy varieties.

I eat the Walmart brand, great value, light Greek yogurt. The banana cream is really good and has 90 calories, 0 fat, 9 carbs, 7 sugar, and 12 protein. I eat one just about every day.

My full liquid diet is the same as my clear liquids (water, skim milk, broth, sf Popsicles, crystal light, tea, coffee) plus cream based Soups (absolutely no lumps or chunks) and drinkable yogurt (which means I'm just going to Water down some Greek yogurt). Plus my Protein drinks which I started post-op. I start tomorrow and in preperation got five different kinds of soup (holy crap I get flavors other than fake fruit!): cream of mushroom, red pepper and tomato (cream), lentil soups and a loaded baked potato soup. The last two have chunks but I plan to purée them before heating. I'll also be using the leftover homemade chicken broth and adding a cream base powder to it for cream of chicken. I've really been struggling with getting all my protein in in the liquid diet, and now that I can have foods that taste good I'm even more concerned. Right now it all comes from my Protein Drinks (I try to get in two a day....16 oz total) with skim milk. But maybe the new normal of three meals (the soups and yogurt) with two Protein Drink Snacks will make me feel like I'm eating like a human instead of trying to drink as much protein and liquid as I can remember to in a day. I'm just ready for a meal to actually feel like a meal!

Week 1 Clear Liquids, weeks 2 and 3 full liquids(milk skim 1%,Protein shakes, yogurt drink, juice low sugar, flavored Water etc) week 4 soft foods( cottage cheese, apple sauce, yogurt, boiled eggs ect) after that you can eat everything in 4 oz measurements. stop when you are full, eat slowly , chew like you have never chewed before LOL this is what my doc ordered. I do agree its too early to eat chicken and potatoes at 2 weeks. I followed this and lost 24 pounds the first month. Dont beat your self up about it start fresh tomorrow I can post the complete list for you if you like he gave me a book that he wrote about the sleeve

I also had fat-free refried Beans - I used shredded low-fat cheddar, some salsa anad a small dallop of low-fat sour cream with mine. Careful with the carbs though - they can add up with beans. Had lots of canned chicken and tuna - added low-fat mayo and pickle relish. Cottage cheese and yogurt (check out Yoplait's 2X Protein!) are easy and high in Protein. The Protein shakes are a good boost of protein when you need it. I "mushed up" the meatloaf, gravy and mashed potatoes from a SmartOnes frozen dinner. That was pretty yummy - and easy!!! I divided the meat, gravy and potatoes into 2 perfectly proportioned meals - about 1/2 cup each. oatmeal, Cream of Wheat, Malt O Meal are good but again, watch the carbs...... Good luck! It's a nice step up from liquids

i'm not running, so maybe that's the difference? typically i have greek yogurt w/fruit. btw - doing nothing today:)

I too hate that yogurt taste - but I LOVE Yoplait Thick & Creamy (used to be called Custard Style). I get the raspberry or strawberry. It's thick like custard - and no whangy taste.

find what works for you. I'm 4 months out and still using Phenergan suppositories twice a day while mostly eating Quest Proten bars and yogurt fruit smoothies Not much real food yet. some of us take longer. It's hard to work through it Keep calling your dr.

I like the Yoplait light flavors...my favorites are lemon, apple turnover, & strawberry white chocolate. They don't taste like yogurt and the texture isn't like typical yogurt.

I had a stricture five weeks post op and they dilated my stomach. I thought that I would be able to eat after this....nope my doctor kept me on liquids. I am dying. I had gotten used to eating "normal" food. I just want mashed potatoes. I can eat yogurt but I can't eat cream soups or mashed potatoes. I am going insane. Has anyone else had to take so many steps back in your diet?

Sophie74656 replied to Mikibi77's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you're going onto soft foods you could bring some cottage cheese or some greek yogurt -
I move to week 2 post op tomorrow and get to transition from Clear Liquids to full liquids (Soups, yogurts, milk, Protein shakes) What is your favorite week 2 food? I am so excited!!!!

Dumping for 4 days straight? Need advice.
Starwarsandcupcakes replied to HajEddie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m not sure how long you’re on clear liquids for (I left the hospital on full liquids) but if they haven’t really given you nutrition advice and are blowing you off the full liquids might help- milk, yogurt, creamy soup bases, … anything that when left at room temperature becomes liquid. The yogurt might help with the probiotics it offers in making your stomach/intestinal issues calm down. Hopefully you’re feeling better soon. -
1 Week Out Gastric Sleeve Plication Surgery
lauraleigh9mm replied to lauraleigh9mm's topic in Gastric Plication Surgery Forum
You know it was funny, I did mine relatively fast, maybe 60 days tops. I feel pretty good about the choice I made for the GST. I LOVE food. I do, but now I will love it in small quantities. I will miss the booze. I did enjoy having a cocktail to relax. I know that I might be able to drink again, but the smell of it still makes me sick. Talk about aversion therapy! Giving up soda has not been any hardship. I am suprised at how little I eat, just a few bites and that is all. My soft food include mini raviolis from the can (I can eat 3 and that fills me up) cottage cheese, yogurt, protein shakes (blah), soup, and I had a bit or cheesy rice the other day. So far no issues, or heartburn. I am taking my vitamins (liquid) each day, making sure I get all my nutrients. -
Issue With Meat
blondegal_ replied to MrsFraga2016's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I like Mexican food so for grilled chicken I'll dip it in plain Greek yogurt that had Mexican spices. Helps out if chicken is dry and I get some protein with the Greek yogurt. -
I had my first cup 3 weeks out. I have had one cup each morning since and in addition to my coffee I add a little cream and a scoop of GENEPRO unflavored Protein powder to it. Lasts me a couple hours and then I usually am ready for like a hard boiled egg or yogurt by like 9:30-10 am. And have already gotten in 30 g of protein.

Grits, applesauce with Protein powder added, greek yogurt, couscous (not really a breakfast food, but so yummy and you can add any flavor you want). If on solids there are lots of options- Cereal, english muffin half with one egg and a piece of turkey bacon, fritata (egg and veggie casserole - lots of recipes online), cheese cubes with grapes

Desperate for protien
DanaMomto3 replied to Takingachance's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I did not have any protein the first 10 days. It's pretty common and my nutritionist was more concerned with me getting my fluids in. In order to feel a little better I would have apple juice 3 oz in the am and for lunch. Once I could have yogurts and puréed foods I was so much bettet -
I eat mostly yogurt, protein drinks, lean meats, cheese, chili, raw veggies

ADJUSTING TO EATING....
JamieLogical replied to heartonmysleeve82's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I thought I would have a much harder time with the no drinking while eating than I really did. I was a bit lucky in that my surgeon only requires I stop 5 minutes before eating and wait 20 minutes after eating. I've heard of some surgeons saying an hour before and an hour after! How could you possibly get all your Water in if you can't drink for like 80% of the day??!?! Anyway, when I first started eating solid foods post-op, it was a little challenging, because I was used to being able to "wash down" dry foods. So, that took a little getting used to. I found it was best just to not have water within reach while I was eating, otherwise I would drink without even thinking about it. I had to re-train my brain. One fascinating thing I learned was that I had CLEARLY been using drinking while eating as a means of eating more food pre-op, without even realizing it. The first time I got a "full" sensation while eating solids post-op, my instinct was to reach for the water to wash down the food so I could eat more! I never realized that about myself until I was post-op. I will say that, while I am cleared by my surgeon to drink 20 minutes after eating, I often find that after a full meal, I need to wait about 40-45 minutes anyway. Otherwise I feel overfull and uncomfortable. If I am just having a small snack, like a cheese stick or some yogurt, then it is easier for me to drink sooner after eating. -
Plain protein powder
mtraverse replied to nikkimapr's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I add mine to my Greek yogurt to get extra protein which equals about 15gms with 2oz yogurt and half scoop protein powder. Plus it is really good with some raspberries or bananas added -
Food prep for returning to work
NewAngela replied to numeby2017's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The light Greek yogurts have 12. String cheese maybe. 2 oz of actual meat has close to 15 grams of Protein. shakes are the easiest though, although I really like the light and fit Greek yogurt flavors. I tend to add a little Splenda to sweeten. I love refried Beans, although fat doesn't matter. My nutritionist stresses that some fat is necessary and not bad, and they only have a gram or two anyways. Part skim ricotta or cottage cheese is another option. I love kefir. High protein and quality Probiotics, although plain is better. The flavored tend to be high carb. I find the plain relatively sweet, but I blend in berries or Splenda sometimes. Fairlife milk is another thing to try. I think they have 12 grams a cup or so. I also do cold cuts with hummus or guacamole. Add a little light sour cream to things to boost protein. Although I haven't tried them, they sell protein powders that blend in Soups. unjury I think. Meat is the most efficient protein source, although tofu would work too. Hmmm. I want to try making some pizza Snacks with tofu crust. I can tolerate crackers but it adds a lot of carbs. Salmon is a good option. Salmon burgers, veggie burgers with cheese. I do locks with some whipped cream cheese too. Yum. Meat is harder to eat. I am only beginning to tolerate it. Oh, my nutritionist suggested high protein noodles made from edame or soy. I am going to try it a some point, but they are more advanced although they shouldn't cause the same issues that white flour noodles cause. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
went for a fill today-didn't get one
donna12 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I went in today to see my dr for a regular monthly visit, I'm 10 1/2 mos post op and was expecting a fill but he decided not to do one. He thought since I'm staying satisfied for 4 to 4.5 hrs between meals and an occasional snack of yogurt or low fat string cheese, he thought I was good to go. Although my weight loss has been slow, it's been steady, 2-4 lbs a month. Just now have been able to introduce walking into my journey in the last couple of weeks so hopefully I will see a difference in toning. I totally forgot to mention hair loss to him, sheesh. My hair is thinning, I take Biotin but the last 3 weeks I've noticed it really is thinning out. Had blood work done by my PCP this week and all was normal except Vit D, he increased that. I'm wondering if I'm not getting enough protein. I'm not good at tracking, especially if I cook or make something homemade I'm totally lost on MFP. Now eating out like Wendy's chili (small) or Chick-fil-A grilled nuggets I can pull nutrition facts off internet. Tues I got stuck really bad on a DEVIL food choice, don't judge, i was craving a burger, so I got a Wendy's Jr cheeseburger and brought it home, well, like an idiot took too big of a bite and got stuck BIG time and ended up puking my stomach up it felt like, needless to say I don't want another burger for a long time. Surgeon today said to me and laughed "bet you don't want a burger anytime soon do ya" lol, and I replied NOPE! He seems to think I'm really close to being in the green zone or maybe in it, hope so. If I can increase my activity and exercise I'm praying I will see more weight come off than 2 to 4 lbs a month. -
Restriction Questionn
princess9475 replied to kayte819's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm only 17 days post-op and I don't eat more than 3oz's... My full feeling kinda just sits under my breasts... I'm eating yogurt, cottage cheese, broth, Jello, pudding, cream of wheat/farina, or mashed potatoes so I have a variety and switch it up a bit but 3 oz's is enough or just under that works also... I have also had sugar free icepops... Still having trouble getting in the protein/ Water but everyday I try to get down a little bit more! Thank you all for giving your time and advice! It is always nice to know were not alone and there are people out there to listen and help! Happy journeys everyone!
