Which hurt more? First surgery or revision to sleeve?
Tomo replied to PuraVida37's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
About the same to me. Minimal pain, minimal nausea. I am now going to revise to Gastric Bypass due to gerd issues. I was wondering what the recovery pain was like between VSG and Revision to RNY. -
Any April 2021 bypassers?
Liv Marie replied to HoltHope2021's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Everything is fine so far! While doing the bypass, they noticed I have a hiatal hernia and so they completed a repair on that as well. Minimal pain following. Just sore and tired for the first week. -

The Sleeve vs Bypass?
starladustangel replied to Michele 2021's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
If you have had GERD at all I would recommend bypass. I never had GERD before my sleeve but now have to revise to bypass due to it. Sleeve was great for me weight loss wise and I hit my goal but GERD has taken over my life because of how sick I am. -
Surgery Scheduled and Telling No One

I did that and I found myself eating things I should've been. Just because I was hiding my sleeve procedure from the people I'm close with & ended up gaining weight. Now I had to have a revision from a sleeve to the full gastric bypass. ABeattyWhite -
Hello! I'm almost 7 years post gastric bypass. Would like to lose about 30 pounds more, but I am happy with my long term results and minimal regain. Dating is not a problem for me, but I'm thinking that it would be a lot easier, if I could find a fellow traveler! Where's the best place to do that? This site's singles section seems a bit difficult to navigate. Thanks in advance, for any guidance. Oh ... and all offers considered. Lol! Andrew

Anyone had surgery Estonia Dr Ilmar Kaur
RonnieRoo22 replied to Mizmarycate's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Hi, yes of course happy to help any way l can. I had a bypass 20+ years ago on the NHS, it was the old open type belly button to boobs cut where they left a much bigger pouch for your stomach and only took 12 inches of intestinal track out. Where as today they take out up to 1 metre. My revision was to reduce my stomach further as it has stretched over 20 years and reduce my intestinal track further to reduce the aborbsion of calories. I lost 2 stone one my run up to surgery, and a further 5. 5 after surgery. Put 5lbs on during lockdown but hoping to shed that again now we can leave the house. My parents were both Irish so l was raised on a high carb diet of potatoes and bread, and you couldn't leave food on your plate. 😋🍞🥔 Hope this helps, feel free to ask anything. But know that he is a wonderful surgeon and a lovely man. I travelled on my own, so a little lonely over my 5 days as most bought friends or family. However Dr Kaur would pop in first thing in the morning for my health check & he would pop in on his afternoon break just for a chat & a laugh. 😅 Let me know if you decide to go ahead with it l will be happy to chat to you about anything you think off. -
I had a gastric bypass several years ago. I managed to lose 140 pounds but never dealt with emotional eating and grazed my way almost back to where I started. I am wondering if the professionals think it would do any harm to use intermediate fasting (ie 2 meals a day) to get back to the results I once had. Thank you for your input!

Just Starting
BypassedSophie replied to ucmgrad2001's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I started the process in January, and my surgery is in 3 days—on Monday!! My surgeon required an Endoscopy and 4 pre-op classes before scheduling the surgery. My BMI is 35 and I originally sought the sleeve, but after the consultation and the endoscopy (I have severe GERD), I decided on the bypass. I did not join the forum until this past week, so I was totally clueless what to expect. I was thrown for a loop when I was told I would have to give up Coke Zero forever! LOL! I am glad I had the months to mentally and physically prepare—I stopped drinking carbonated drinks in Feb, I gave up sugar in March, and I gave up slider foods (chips and popcorn) in April. It really helped me for the 2 week pre-op liquid diet—I wasn’t going through caffeine or sugar detox while “hangry!” Good Luck with your consultation—let us know how it goes! ☺️ -
I had the bypass surgery yesterday and experienced no issues other than the abdominal pain you experience which honestly feel more Ike hunger pains. My question is how much were others able to drink one day out of surgery? I’ll be lucky to get in 2 bottles of waters today! And am worried about hydration here!

Anyone had surgery Estonia Dr Ilmar Kaur
julieschmulie16 replied to Mizmarycate's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
@RonnieRoo22, Can I ask was it a Gastric Bypass Revision? I am based in Ireland and have been advised that it is not available in Ireland and that only a handful of doctors carry out the procedure in the UK. Can I ask how have you found it since the procedure? Many Thanks, J -
Has anyone regretted getting the surgery?
starladustangel replied to Roses436's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am almost 2 years out. I do not regret the decision to have weight loss surgery at all although if I had known I would end up needing a revision due to reflux I would have chosen bypass initially instead of sleeve but I had no way of predicting that. I'm down 172 pounds. From a 54 BMI to a 24 BMI. Russell stover makes delicious sugar free peanut butter cups. There are reese's and quest ones too. I made what I call peanut butter cup oatmeal for breakfast today which is oatmeal, pbfit powder for protein and Walden farms zero calorie chocolate syrup. I've had diet coke a few times but carbonation bothers me so I have to let it go completely flat and it isn't worth it. I don't miss it too much. My PCP wasn't super big on WLS but my insurance didn't require a referral from him and honestly when I went back for a regular visit about a year post OP he was happy to see that it had been successful for me to have surgery. I don't eat red meat often as I don't do as well with it since my galbladder was removed. -

Reflux after weening off of Prilosec?
catwoman7 replied to OnTheWayDown's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
it might be. I think doctors are more cautious prescribing them now because of the possible side effects. I'm sure they'll extend your prescription awhile longer if you need it, but most of the healing takes place that first month, so that's probably why they only have you on that long. A lot of us are on longer than that, though. Just let them know if you start having issues when you're off them - you may need to be on longer. But then again, you may be fine after the first month. as an aside, if you had sleeve, reflux is not-too-uncommon side effect - about 30% of sleevers have issues with it. Usually it can be treated medically, but a few people end up having to revise to bypass. But that's different than having some minor reflux as you're weaning yourself off PPI's. *Usually* that resolves. -
My surgeon discussed the various bariatric surgeries but I had thoroughly researched them and had decided on the gastric sleeve before my first appointment with my surgeon. I knew 3 family and friends who had had the bypass surgery and all 3 have regained a large portion of their weight loss.I had one friend who was successful with the lapband surgery but another friend who spent nearly two months in the hospital and had to have the band removed. I am 18 months post gastric sleeve surgery and down 145 pounds from my heaviest weight. The difference in my life has been AMAZING. I have gone from a 3X to a size large in clothing, my energy level is up so much that I exercise five times a week for at least 30 minutes but usually one hour and I went back to work part time after 4 years of retirement. I was on 3 medications and was still not able to achieve a earthy BP. My meds have been cut in half and my BP is nearly perfect. Lol, when I went to my PCP the first time after my surgery, I thought he was going to do a jig because he was so excited by the amount of weight that I had lost and how much my BP had dropped. My only regret is that I hadn’t had the surgery sooner.

I am SO disappointed in myself. Self-sabotage post-op
MoominMan posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a gastric bypass in August. I've lost 105 pounds – which is not bad, I guess – but the weight loss has stalled, hardly changed at all since January. The fact is I have been eating too much. I don't dump and bad foods have crept in. Today I ate 4 packets of crisps and 5 small chocolate cakes. That's nowhere near the amount I used to eat of course, but its still really bad. My restriction has never been that strict, from quite early on I could eat relatively large portions for a bypasser. I am sabotaging myself and I feel like I have squandered the goldilocks period of the post-op where your body is most receptive to losing weight. I can't express how sad this makes me. I always knew the transition to healthy eating was going to be hard but it is further complicated by a quite debilitating eating dorser. I've been diagnosed with avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) which has made everything so much harder. For me its not as simple as trying new foods or changing recipes to healthier options; there are so few (we're talking no more than three) reasonably healthy things I can reliably cook myself and eat. But because I end up having the same thing every day, it's not that healthy. Still more carbs than I should be having. It's 8 months since my operation. Is there time to turn this around? -
Did you choose sleeve vs bypass and then get physician approval? Or does the doctor pretty much decide what is best for you? Does it ever happen that you have one surgery and later wish you would have had the other? And if so, why?

I’ve just had my sleeve revised to the SIPS procedure on 4/22/21. I Been a week and I can’t seem to eat anything without gas pains, even water is so uncomfortable. The pantoprazole my doctor prescribed me is no help. Does this ever pass? Any suggestions?

I went to my consult asking for the sleeve, but after my doctor recommended the bypass and with more research, I chose the bypass. I had occasional GERD before, and I didn't want to take the chance of it getting worse. There are WAY too many folks on here getting revisions, and my insurance was very clear that this was a one-time thing. I also have diabetes, and you have more of a chance of being cured with the bypass. I was concerned about the bypass being more invasive with a harder recovery, but my doctor told me that on our end, the surgery and the recovery are the same for both the sleeve and the bypass. The only difference is on his end because bypass is a more technically complex surgery that takes about an hour longer. I had my bypass on 3/3, and I'm so glad I went with it.

Has anyone regretted getting the surgery?
lorettacv replied to Roses436's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a similar experience- I went through 90% of the pre op requirements and stopped because of negative support from some doctors and friends and my own fears. A year and a half later I started again. It took me 13 months because of COVID to complete the pre op and get a surgery date for gastric bypass. It’s been 6 months and I’m down 62 lbs. I’m eating high protein low carb. When traveling I go to McD for egg McMuffin and toss the muffin. I try all fruits, vegetables and meats. I skip things like steak because I don’t like the way the first bite feels in my mouth or stomach. Thankfully meatballs are ok! I even drink wine. Yes, my old lifestyle changed but it’s been worth the improvements in my physical abilities and outlook. Good luck! -
I was supposed to have surgery in June and got a call today about a cancellation so now it’s May 19th!! I attended the final class today and have my pre op doctors appointment on the 13th. I also found out that I get to start my liquid 3 week diet tomorrow-surprise. I thought I’d have more time to prepare but excited to just get it going! I’m having gastric bypass due to severe GERD as well.

The Sleeve vs Bypass?
BypassedSophie replied to Michele 2021's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I was in the same predicament as you—need to lose around 70lbs and wanted the sleeve. My GERD is horrendous and causing scar tissue in my esophagus, so surgeon highly recommended bypass. My surgery is Monday, and I am excited to read that people who had bypass, do not have GERD! Thank you! ❤️ -
May Surgeries - check in!
BypassedSophie replied to ChunkyCali's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My bypass surgery is scheduled for this Monday (May 3rd). I am on Day 10 of my pre-op liquid diet. The first 3 days are the hardest—I had body aches, hunger, weakness, and fatigue. Now, I don’t really notice being hungry, and I have more energy than I did last week. I have lost 15 lbs! I bought the bariatric soups from my surgeon’s office, and I find mixing them with flavorless protein powder and broth make them better—I also added a little black pepper and garlic seasoning. My best advice is to keep busy and keep drinking water and sugar-free Gatorade to help! My motivation for getting through these two weeks is constantly reading about what happens when you don’t follow the diet. I don’t want my surgery cancelled or my health at risk, so I drink the soup, the protein shakes, and the sugar-free liquids and count the days until Monday! I am both nervous and excited. Anyone having a bypass? Most of the people I know had the sleeve, but I have severe GERD so my surgeon recommended bypass! -
Has anyone regretted getting the surgery?

So much this... never realized how much of our vacation time was spent thinking about WHERE we were going to eat, and now that I'm not checking out the food at parties, I can actually talk to people... although I'm an introvert so that might not be a good thing - LOLOLOL!! I had a weird reaction to one of the shots they gave me in the hospital and ended up with another emergency surgery the day after my bypass. I regretted it for about a day, but since then I've had no problems. I even asked my surgical team if they pranked me and really hadn't done anything after all. I can't eat nearly as much and if I do I get a little nauseous, but other than that, I love it. My dietician said that 90% of folks never have any real issues so that's more the norm than it is the exception. It is a bit of trial and error as everyone is different. I haven't found a food yet that I can't have - including red meat - but I also haven't tried any desserts as I'm afraid to start up my old cravings. Sugar is an addiction after all and for me it is very real, but that is MY personal choice. Are there some things that will change in your life - absolutely. It's the nature of the beast. The only time food wise I've had an ounce of regret was I just wanted to gorge on Chinese food like I would have been able to in the past. It wasn't real hunger, it was just a mental thing that I worked through. I ate my little serving and moved on with my life perfectly satisfied.
