heartfire replied to Shamrockgirl60's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Stayed the same and I'll take it! Gained 5lbs of Water weight overnight after forgetting my BP med one day. It's a diuretic too. Managed to get back to where I was last week by this AM but can tell I'm still bloated. We'll see what happens this week. I go for another fill on Wednesday. He's not going to be happy. He wanted me to lose 6lbs. Ain't gonna happen! -
My mom was a member of Curves for three years along with her group of lady friends. They went religiously but none of them ever lost any weight! I'd invest in a regular gym membership. You need good cardio options to lose fat. Jumping up and down for 30 seconds at a time just isn't going to do it. Best wishes!

Does pounds/% to lose determine band?
nanahanna replied to Wheetsin's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hmmmm...I would like to know that too! I don't think I need to lose but about 80 pounds which would put me at the top of my recommended weight. The reason I think this is because I am 61 and the older you are the older you look when you are so skinny. When I was 25 I looked great at 125, but I don't think I would now. Anyway...that is getting away from your question. LOL. -
3 months post-op and having setbacks...
short&chunky replied to beachygirl2003's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was banded on May 26th and have only lost 13 lbs... I have had the same feeling... When I eat, it feels like I've swallowed a quarter. Terrible pain, I've thrown up a couple of times. I've had 2 fills since the surgery. I'm not losing weight! I'm getting discouraged. -
Fantastic!!! Gotta love that sleeve :-) My partner and I were talking about the holidays last night. He was saying that he is already eating too much junk (Halloween candy) and how its only going to get worse through the end of the year. I chuckled to myself because I will probably lose a little weight through the holidays. I have had 2 bites of candy and I am not interesed in any more of it. We bought a pumpkin pie because it was on sale - I took one bite and almost gagged because it was too sweet. No more pie for me. Could it be that this will be a season when I am actually in control of myself? Now THAT'S something to Celebrate. Congrats!

I've been told that my sweet tooth may be a problem for me with the band. But chips (which I can't stand) are band friendly too. I think what really kills bandsters is not dealing with emotional eating. If you eat when your body tells you it's not hungry, the band isn't going to help you. Likewise, if you aren't ready to make lifestyle changes. If you are ready to deal with your head hunger and make lifestyle changes, there are plenty of sweet and savory options that will help you lose weight. If you aren't, then you'll find a way to eat around the band.

I just feel like I have to share the events of this week with someone and this seems like a great place to do it. On Wednesday, I had a check-up with my surgeon, Dr. Roslin, and he was really happy with my progress. I am down about 120 lbs since my surgery in July and my blood work looks good except for high triglycerides which I am working on (damn my penchant for cookies!). I am especially thrilled about my blood work because I have struggled with getting my vitamins in and now I feel that I have that situation under control, except for my calcium, but I am working on that too. Dr. Roslin thought I looked "svelte" -- I don't think anyone has every used that word to describe me, so I walked out of the office on clouds. I'd love to lose another five to ten pounds and since I have not really been exercising, I think that is possible with some exercise and some slightly better eating habits. Yesterday, I decided to reward myself with a new suit for work, which I desparately need. I've been trying to avoid buying any until my weight stabilizes, but I really need one. Last summer, just before my surgery, I bought a suit at my highest size ever -- a 54. I hated to buy it and it felt like a tent, but my niece was getting married and I really had no choice. I was shocked and thrilled to find out that my new suit size is a 42 regular and then have the salesman tell me that I should probably have the jacket taken in a little! I honestly thought I would start balling right there in the three way mirror! FInally, after being widowed four and a half years ago, I am dating a really nice woman. I met her in November when I was pretty far along in my weight loss, but I've been honest with her about the surgery since our second date and she has been really supportive and complimentary. I really enjoy being with her We had a wonderful dinner together Tuesday night and I find myself really caring about her and thinking about her a lot and I am pretty sure the feeling is mutual. After being so sad for such a very long time, it is a wonderful feeling! I can't be sure that this relationship wouldn't have happened without the surgery, but I don't think my heart and head would have been in a position to pursue it without the newfound confidence that this surgery has given me. What an amazing difference these last 10 months have made in my life! If there is anyone out there who is on the fence about having this surgery -- my advice is to do tons of research, get comfortable with the procedure and your doctor and then, GO FOR IT! If you are like most people on these boards, you will never regret your decision. Thanks for being out there to listen, guys. I can't imagine where I would be without this board to support and guide me! Brian

Starting 4th week - been stalled for a week already
MiteyMom replied to numeby2017's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Begin focusing on how you feel, like clothes being looser, sitting in chairs more comfortably, walking easier, etc. And don't keep a scale in your house! Yes, it will make you crazy! Hang in there. The weight will come off especially if you start some exercise. And do it slowly. Someone earlier said its a marathon not a sprint. Be kind to yourself. And be proud of every pound you've already lost, knowing it will stay off!! I'm rooting for you!! -
Thank you! I'm proud of myself and everyone else out there that can accomplish what I have done and more! The surgery sucked but it was what I needed. My partner lost 120 pounds on weight watchers and works for them now. It worked for her but it didn't for me. The surgery was the right choice for me.

1Yr After Lap Band And I Am Slowing Down:(
elcee replied to kgarcia's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It is normal for weight loss to be fast at the beginning of a program and slow down the longer you have been doing it. The more weight you have to lose the easier it comes off. You may also need to relook at your calorie intake because the less you weigh the less you need to eat to maintain your new weight. So if at the beginning you could eat 1500 cal per day and lose you may find that you now need to eat 1200 or 1000 or possibly even less. -
Sometimes people gain some weight after surgery due to IV fluids but it doesnt last. When I had my emergency surgery to have the band removed last March, I gain almost 18 lbs andja phenomenon called 3rd spacing was blowing me up like a dead fish. I wasnt eating or drinking that whole week It went away in about 10 days after I was discharged. It has alot to o with the type of IV fluids they used.

It is not unusual to lose a lot of weight in the first month, but then it tends to slow down and level out a bit after you move to full solids. I lost 32 pounds the first month, but now average between 1-3 pounds per week.

Am I Doing This Right?
COnative replied to TheNEWME!'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think you are doing great and this all sounds good. I was eating all the same things except mayo- it made me feel really sick for some reason. Don't fret about the weight- I hit a 3 week plateau right around one month from surgery. So 1 pound is still really good. You are going to lose no matter what! Don't worry- enjoy the ride -
Stomach pain 8 mos postop
oldoneyoungagain replied to copmom's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I totally agree it is probably your gallbladder. With significant weight loss you can develop gallbladder problems or gallstones. You need to see your primary doctor or your surgeon. Or since you are saying your lower back aches you may have developed kidney stones, that also is a problem. You need to get an appointment as soon as possible as it probably will get worse before it gets better don't put it off. -
Doing great even though I am at a plateau
labwalker replied to bulawookie's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I've stalled for months... but usually that is due to becoming careless about exercise or food choices. The last instance was an indicator that I needed another fill. Before WLS what are now "stalls" would have been periods major weight gain! I can go on autopilot for several months without gaining a pound, and that is a good feeling! I've actually been able to diet to a slightly lower weight that were I am now at almost 2 years out of surgery, but I was not able to maintain the weight over the winter months and eventually gained and lost on a yo-yo course. The band at worst provides stability and the weight stays off. At best, I see a few pounds being shed every few weeks. -

I had a wonderful Dr in Northridge, Ca. It's kinda far from Long Beach, but if you're willing to travel for an appt, I would HIGHLY recommend him. Here is his info: Dr. Uthaiah Kokkalera Center for Weight Loss Surgery Northridge Hospital Medical Center Tel: (877) 448-4448 Fax: (818) 775-9354 -

Hello my Kentucky friend. I'm in Louisville and like you, I had my WLS 2 years ago and like you I suffer from anxiety and depression. I had a really hard time in March/April of this year and was suicidal for the first time ever and I was eating TONS and TONS of chocolate. I gained 10-12 pounds. But I stayed the course with my meds and kept seeing my therapist every 3 weeks and it's slowly helped. I started back on track 30 days ago and am losing weight again and have a better out look on life. Depression is real. It's tough. Hang in there. Don't give up what you worked so hard to get in the first place (weight loss) and try to focus on that when times are tough.

If I wanted to try low carb....
ElfiePoo replied to Jess55's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Generally, anywhere below 60gm per day is considered low carb. If you're looking for faster results and/or looking to control blood sugar levels if a diabetic, then drop below 30gm. I eat 30gm or below per day and do not eat any sugar, grains, starches or fruits (per Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution). I eat 2 scrambled eggs for breakfast. Some mornings I'm just not hungry and don't feel like eating so somewhere around mid-morning I'll drink a low carb (4gm) Protein shake and then eat lunch at my normal time. Again, since I'm trying to keep my diabetes under control I eat at the same time every day. For lunch and dinner I eat 3-4 oz protein and 1 c. vegies - only 'green', non-starchy vegies (green Beans, broccoli, asparagus, artichokes, salads, etc.). Lunch is usually a salad with cheese, chopped hardboiled egg and some type of deli meat (ham, turkey, etc) and full fat blue cheese dressing. Dinner is usually just grilled, roasted, pan fried, etc. protein and steamed or roasted vegies. Many low carbers get a bit fancier with their menu, but I find I'm more successful if I keep it clean and simple. I try to keep my fats at least at 50% and sometimes that means eating bacon for breakfast and cream in my coffee. I do this because studies show that lipid profiles improve about twice as much on a low carb, high fat diet as they do on a low carb, low fat diet and more weight is lost. Both Gary Taubes and Dr. Bernstein explain why this works. Plus, the fat combined with the protein helps with the hunger.
