  1. Hi there! I have not had my surgery yet, but have lost 40 pounds since June, with the help of my bariatric doctor. I'm finding that many of my clothes are too big. I'm using thrift stores and clearance sales to pick up some work clothes that fit, and I've had some wonderful co-workers give me some clothes in my new size. What I'm not sure about is what to do about my old clothes. I have lost weight before, but have never gotten rid of my bigger sized clothes. Now that I'm planning on having gastric bypass surgery in January, it really seems silly to keep them. I've considered selling them to a cosignment shop where I live to get some credit to purchase smaller sizes. I'm wondering what others who have gone down several sizes have done. Thanks for the input!

    Acid reflux *after* surgery?

Most doctors recommend an PPI post-op to protect the suture line in the stomach. Their is just not enough stomach left to store the acid, so if finds a place to go, usally up! I also received Nexium Mumps from Dr. Aceves post-op, though I upped the dose to 40 mg since I had pre-op acid issues. Untill the suture lines are healed be sure to take some sort of PPI, Prilosec OTC is a good one, but it must be taken daily or 2 times daily. It will not work as an immediate fix as it takes 24 hours to get up to theraputic leves. If you are still having issues with Prilosec talk to your doctor about a Nexium prescription. I had a co-worker that ignored her acid production post-op Gastric Bypass and she ended up in the hospital due to a ruptured gastric ulcer. She was a nurse as well and knew better then to ignore her stomach "talking" to her. Tracy (RN when not on vacation )
  3. I had my sleeve ( actually a revision from a band) three days ago. I feel fine but am scared that I may have made a huge mistake. I have battled obesity my entire life. I had fair results with the band, but if I wasn't getting stuck, it wasn;t working. I don't know if I am scared that this will work or scared that it won't.
  4. I was given a handbook at my first doctor's appt. It has everything very clearly spelled out. From pre- to post op. On the page that discusses Vitamins it states: "After gastric bypass or sleeve surgery, you must take vitamins and mineral supplements for the rest of your life to prevent nutritional deficiencies." Multi & mineral supplement Take 2 multiviatims every day You may need to use a chewable for at least the first month after surgery Do no use gummy vitamins as they are not complete Purchas a high potency Vitamin containing 100%of daily value for at least 2/3 of nutrients listed Calcium Citrate w/ Vit D Take 100-1500 mg of calcium daily. Do not take more than 600mg of calcium at a time Pay attention to serving size. Often , the serving size is 2 pills If you take Iron, do not take iron & calcium at the same time. Separate them by at least 2 hours. Additional Vit. D You will need an additional 1000 international units of D3. Your total daily requirement from all your supplements should be 3000 IU Vit. B-12 Daily sublingual(under the tongue) *If the tablet contains 1000mcg, then you only need to take every other day OR Monthly B-12 shot Iron Supplement (Optional) Some patients will need extra iron. Your dietitian will tell you if you need to take iron. Taking iron with 250mg Vit C will improve iron absorption All of these can be purchased OTC. Sometimes insurance will cover some of them if your doctor writes a prescription. If you are feeling tired you might want to purchase them now. At the very least increase your multi-vitamin. My doctor will check bloodwork at 3mths
  5. Woops your right -- I was referring to Dr Almanza NOT Alverez. So just so anyone reading this is clear.. Dr Almanza = BAD.. Alverez = GOOD. I'll revise the prior posts as well.
  6. I have a question. After bypass or any WLS are many people noticing a huge amount of excess skin ? If so what are the options and if not what have you done ???
  7. I just had my revision from sleeve to RNY yesterday. Surgeon said all went well and I am home. Have no problem with fluids but now just started drinking protein which is ok. I am keeping a log of everything I drink. I am having a lot of back pain. But I know how hard the operating table is and hospital beds suck. And it’s so hard for me to get comfortable here at home. I am In a big arm chair with an ottoman and a heating pad on my back but nothing is helping really. I already know I won’t be able to sleep in my bed so the chair it’ll be. I have Tylenol with code in which is taking the edge off. I am also peeing sooooo much which is annoying but it helps with me walking more I guess lol
  8. I recently had a conversation with someone seeking a Gastric-bypass. Her provider warned her against the LapBand; stating that over time the materials corroid and breakdown, resulting in the need for more surgery. Has anyone else been told this? :phanvan

So slow I feel like I'm in reverse!

I attended the mandatory informational meeting last Monday -- took my Mom because she is the one who is the most oppositional to this whole thing. Lots of developments....1) I was relieved to learn that my surgeon's practice is a center of excellence...apparently that is a big deal. 2) Mom ended up promising her support and declaring that she wanted only the best for me and my health! Yeah!!! :tongue2: 3) Actually found myself debating between being banded and having the bypass....I was so positive before that I wanted the band...now I'm waffling. :confused2: 4) Was reassured that everything the doctor talked about, I already knew from visiting this site!! 5) Have been officially declared a "candidate" by the surgeon:blush: Now the frustrating part....my insurance makes me complete SIX months of a physician supervised diet! And....drum roll....my first appointment with my surgeon is October 29!! :smile2: That was his first available!! So not only do I have to wait two and a half months to see him, I have to do six months of dieting after that before I even GET to the band. I feel like I've tried and tried and tried to get the weight off and been unsuccessful and now I'm at an all-time high for weight. I've faced the reality of the health concerns and researched and made a major commitment to this and I can't move forward...like I'm circling above the airport but I can't land. Ugh!

    On TPN to gain weight

it's really, really rare to have a stricture that late - they almost always appear - if they're going to appear - within the first three months after surgery. I had two - at four weeks out and again at eight weeks out. The first time I knew something was wrong and I called my clinic. They suspected it was a stricture and sent me over to the hospital for an upper endoscopy to confirm (and "fix") it. The second time I knew exactly what it was since I'd seen this movie before and I went right in to have it stretched. So no, I never got to the point you were at. For those newbies who are reading this, strictures only happen to about 5% of bypass patients (they can happen to sleeve patients as well, but they're very rare with sleeve), and they almost always happen within the first three months after surgery. Just be aware of the symptoms she listed and contact your clinic if you first start noticing stuff like this. They're not going to heal on their own, and they're an easy fix. Just make sure to let your clinic know if you start having these kinds of symptoms (can't keep anything down, nausea all the time) since these are not normal and are usually indicative of a stricture.

While not required by insurance my doctor had me get one. He has all of his bypass patients get one so he decided to require it for all sleeves as well, just to make sure there are no issues.
  12. Hi new here had reverse op band to bypass 10th june havnt lost weight stuck at 16.3 before band broke 12.7 so upset any advice any one this happend too ? Sent from my SM-G960F using BariatricPal mobile app
  13. Are you measuring? With my bypass it took me a while to know what “full” felt like, so I always pre-measured my food

    Why did you choose GBP?

It was a hard decision for me, but I'm so happy I choose RNY bypass. I just felt like it has been proven for many more years and the long term success rate is higher. My insurance only covers once, so I wanted to be sure I picked the best. Sent from my SM-G925V using the BariatricPal App

    Why did you choose GBP?

I choose gastric bypass from the get go. I wanted to extra support of knowing that if I eat something high in sugar my grouch pouch would let me know by dumping syndrome. I never want to eat sugar foods again. Plus gastric bypass is the gold standard! That was enough for me. however I do think it should be a personal choice and weigh all of the pros and cons. I am nine weeks post op and have lost 62 pounds! Not a single regret!

    Why did you choose GBP?

My surgery is April 21st. I was set on the sleeve until my appointment with surgeon. He said it was my choice but when he showed me the weight loss I could expect from the sleeve vs. Bypass I chose bypass. 50lbs difference for my body type. 5'5" 370. Plus I had acid reflux during pregnancy bad & he said it could come back with the sleeve. I don't want to go through that again. The only thing I'm going to not like about the bypass is giving up my NSAIDS for pain/ sinus headache. I've been trying to avoid them to get in the habit of taking other things. All in all the thoughts of maybe losing the extra 50 was my biggest factor. Good luck!

    Dumping Syndrome

You might post in the general or RNY forum as it is a more common problem with the bypass and fairly rare with the sleeve.

    Strange smell and taste

I had the sleeve not the bypass and I haven't experienced that. However, my cousin had the bypass within a few days of mine and he also tells me that things taste different (and not in a good way). I don't have any insight into what causes that but you're not alone.
  19. Travelher

    Why did you choose GBP?

I went bypass as well, mine was revision from a band. I had bad reflux with the band, but my doctor prefered bypass as the tried and true surgery. so happy with my decision.

    Lap Band The Right Choice?

Did she tell you WHY she didn't think it was the right choice for you? Did she say that the LAP BAND wasn't the right choice and suggested other WLS? This is coming from the psych evaluation, not medical....so in most cases, the psych eval is used to make sure that the patient is mentally ready for weight loss surgery, in general....not just the lap band. So, if she is saying it's not right for you, TO ME it sounds like she is saying you are not mentally prepared for whats to come with weight loss surgery. However, I don't know exactly what she said. You have to be mentally prepared for any WLS - gastric bypass & sleeve included.

    Failure

You will get very many varied responses, particularly as you posted the same thing four times. Doesn't sound like you took your investigatins further when your weight lost stalled. Have you now? Had an endoscope? Not sure what thoughts you are after? But if you want a bypass revision, talk to your doctor and get a referral to a surgeon and discuss your surgery options. But you one step ahead of where you've been for the past few years and its a start.

    Hello to All

The reason I would never consider RnY is due to malabsorption. I am on several medications and cannot afford for them not to be absorbed. My sister had it and the malabsorption of medications was a real problem. I was dead set on lap band until I went to Dr Gs seminar and changed my mind to sleeve. I have also read too many revisions and lots of docs not doing sleeve any more.
  23. Hi I just wanted to reply to your post because you have just given me the same assurance I needed. I met with my surgeon yesterday. Before I saw him, I was sure that I wanted the sleeve. He advised that I have the Gastric Bypass to get the best results addressing my Diabetes, High BP, Cholesteral and sleep Apnea. Now reading your post that you are off all of your meds... WOW, that is awesome and I am so happy that I ran across your post. HAPPY DANCE!!

    My Ongoing Story :)

I posted in a new thread but figured I'd put an update in this thread too in case any of my loyal followers here are still around It is now May of 2014 and I don't eat real food, I'm on 40mg of Nexium twice daily which is double what's usually used, I'm still on the Calcium channel blocker and the Amitryptiline but I have bad spasms whenever I eat or drink anything. I barely manage pudding and ice cream so get no Protein or much Water. I'm tired all the time and I haven't lost any weight. I can't eat anything other than carbs without pain so bad it lands me in the emergency room so I just eat what I can here and there, it's pretty miserable. I gave up on my surgeon until recently when I went back for one last ditch effort at fixing this and he was totally shocked that I'm still having these spasms...it's insanely rare. He wants to put a stent in but said 70-80% of people can't tolerate the pain and have to remove it right away and even if it does work it's only temporary. The second option is a revision to a bypass to eliminate the acid which is what the main cause of the spasms is. I was adverse to the idea of another surgery but after doing lots of research I decided I'm going to schedule the revision. I have to have a permanent solution, I'm 20 and am on so so much medicine so I feel like I have to give that option a try. It will be scheduled on Monday for sometime either next week or the week after. I'll try to keep everyone updated with a date. This has been a pretty awful experience for me so hopefully the bypass will fix things for me and maybe I'll even be able to lose some weight. If only I could tolerate protein or anything besides super super soft moist foods
