Please help me with protiens!!!
lizrbit replied to Bamalama's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i dont know what brand mine is, but i know its soy whey protien. Its cheap too. i get it at walmart for thirteen dollars a large can, (before i spent over 125 dollars on isopure). when i switched i started losing weight, but ... my nutritionalist looked at me sternly. said she wants me to only do it once a week or so now and ONLY as Meal Replacement, because...after we heal...here it comes are you ready? "we arent supposed to drink our calories"... but in the mornings these days i cant do solid food. which will change from day to day. i think my surgeon has a remote control. i like them for breakfast. i also like them to use as Meal Replacements for the rest of the day if i have a pb. i put a lot of stuff in mine. a happy beth shake: In blender put: •one small container of probiotic yogurt •half the same container of 2percent milk •ten pecans •one scoop of protien powder • one tablespoon flax seed oil (to balance the powder and make my hair gorgeous) •mulitivitamin, calcuim, iron, b12, collegen capsule, acidolpholis (i hate taking pills so its easier for me to grind them up into the shake where i wont taste them) • a serving of metemucel • two fat strawberries from a bag of frozen ones i keep in the freezer • a medium banana after blending it should fit into a pint glass with no problem. its VERY THICK and sticks to the sides of the glass. (like it sticks to the insides of you!) my husband HATES these and refuses to drink them. I dig them, but i like strange things. it has the consistancy of pudding pretty much. I drink half of it before i go out on my morning bikeride, then half when i get back while im getting ready for work. i think as long as your carb count is low you should be okay with protien powder, just remember they tell us not to drink our calories, unless tight or pb and only as a meal replacement, after you are past the initial full liquid stage. -
My sister who was banded last summer was hungry from the get-go and couldn't wait to get her first fill. I knew from the forum that most do not feel restriction. I think I'm blessed like Jack. I really don't feel hungry (even when my tummy growls sometimes). Last night was the first I felt tempted, but I think it was only because I was tired of the sweet stuff like Jello, popcicles, yogurt. Took care of that by making a little beef/mushroom broth. Hit the spot and took care of that craving. I was also told to watch it with things like cream Soups and puddings as they are so high calorie. Congrats Jack on doing so well. Don't think I'll hit 20 by New Years, but maybe 15? another member of the 12/21 possee

How do you get all of your protein in?
Mel Mel replied to Lch8's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I try to focus my meals around protein. For breakfast I'll make a veggie omelate with egg whites for extra protein and less fat and calories. Lunch and dinner I'll have a turkey burger with grilled onion on it and some veggies, or turkey chili with beans which provides fiber and protein, or chicken or fish with veggies. I'm not ready for raw fruits and veggies as per my nutritionist but I would eat grilled chicken salads. Since I have no fill yet I snack on yogurt which also has protein. I do eat carbs like whole wheat toast once in awhile but try to limit that. I do supplement with isopure ready to drink, half a bottle gives me an extra 20g of protein a day. -
our doctor allows yogurt as our source of protein for the first 2 weeks. we can also have milk, sorbet s.f. jello, coffee, tea fruit ice, popsicles and a few other things. The yogurt has to not have chinks of fruit in it.

I'm a little further out, but I could always hold 6oz. of yogurt/soup and only 3 - 4oz. of more dense protein like chicken or fish.

Yes, baby food is a godsend at that stage, that and greek yogurt. Anything to be off liquids is wonderful!!! Good luck 8 weeks post op.

You estimated that you eat over 100g carbs daily... But this sounds like an oddly high amount of carbs for just yogurt/tuna/beans/citrus. What kind of yogurt, salad dressings and sauces are you eating in addition? Ex. Chobani blueberry vs Chobani plain yogurt You may need to incorporate less of the carb dense foods (beans are carb heavy, but fiber heavy too) with salads like with 1/4 cup of beans instead of just1 cup of beans

VSG /Dumping/Late Dumping
GreenTealael replied to GreenTealael's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Ok updates: This has absolutely continued to happen. It happened this Sunday evening and monday afternoon. Both times I was minding my business eating protein rich foods (greek yogurt w/ granola & chicken with roasted vegetables) I felt like i might pass out during the incidents but i didn't. Just wanted to cry a little. But i think it has now happened the very most with yogurt, so I may cut back or give it up completely. (It's not the granola... It was happening with every variation of a parfait i made. Only the yogurt is the common factor) -
So disappointed in myself!
Ejami replied to oklafarmgal's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Forgot to mention sugar free yogurt, sugar free pudding, low fat cottage cheese.. -
I couldn't do the puree or baby food either. I lived off refried bean concoctions, key lime greek yogurt and scrambled eggs during that phase. Had to add protein shakes too. Now I don't touch the shakes.

Suggestions For Liquid Diet??
NWgirl replied to skinny2beEMG's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was not required to do the liquid diet either (just low fat) but I did decide to do it for a week prior to surgery. I had two protein shakes, two Greek yogurts, and one Quest protein bar a day. It was good practice for after and helped get some more weight off. -
It Is my first day home since band removal (slept in my own bed last night after four days in the hospital). I feel like I got beat up and my entire body hurts, joints and all. I still feel the "phantom lap band" pains and they used surgical glue to close the 5 incisions. I was sleeping in recovery unit after surgery for about 4 hours. Full body pain and severe stomach, neck, back and throat pain (from tube during surgery). Clear liquid diets for now and liquid hydrocodone for pain. I also got xanax to help me fall asleep. My diet consists of broth, creamed soups, Jello, ice cream, pudding, yogurt, Sorbet, flan, broth, and water. Going to eat this diet for the next week or so and then slowly introduce new foods like oatmeal and eggs. I will keep everyone updated as time goes on. I feel like crap today but did mange to sleep through the night on my back. I woke up one time during the night to use bathroom and take my medication dose (every 6 hours). My husband has been absolutely AMAZING helping me through this and running errands for me. I could not have done this without him. I do suggest having some help when coming home from hospital. Especially when it comes to picking up my meds from pharmacy (hard to find liquid narcotics) and running errands. I am not allowed to drive so he has really stepped up and he never left my side. Hopefully I will improve over the next few days. I do not think I will be going to work tomorrow especially because I cannot drive. I will take it one day at a time. My husband may drive me to work if I am feeling up to it, and I will possibly do part-time days this week if anything. I will keep everyone ppsted as time moves on. I also tried my best to keep my band once removed, but the state I live in sends it to pathology and cannot give back to the patient by law... what a bummer!!!

Another trick I use is to make all my Snacks protein-based – nuts, meats, Jerky, Greek yogurt, cheese, etc. As long as I'm not eating carbs, they don't seem to affect my weight loss because they don't throw me out of ketosis.

Antibiotics and Nutrition
FocusOnMeNow replied to BaileyBariatrics's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Magazine
Hmm, I always heard to take antibiotics with yogurt, so that the yogurt can combat the bacterial imbalance in your gut, and reduce the side effects from abx. Never realized that it could compromise the efficacy of the antibiotics. I will have to study that further. -
Thank you all of you!! I seem to be going back and forth on the 1lb. Yea I am on regular food but I really watch it. They said I was a fast healer and if I am comfortable eating it then its fine but be mindful about it. I couldn't eat a hamburger but more like salmon and some salad. I eat some crackers and suck on them to get them mooshy. But I also am on soups and yogurt. But I am proud of one thing, NO CAFFEINE or REGULAR POP!!! Good Luck to all of you!! And THANK YOU AGAIN

Thanks for the well wishes, everyone! I'm still having some trouble sleeping, as I expected as I am normally a tummy sleeper. But, otherwise I guess I'm doing ok. Trying to sip Water through the day. I haven't eaten much of anything, maybe 1/3 cup of Soup broth, 4 or 5 bites of yogurt and half a packet of cream of wheat (and we were out of milk so it was just the Cereal lol). It's not that I can't eat, I just really don't feel the need to. This morning I'm having a medifast chai to try to get some nutrients and Protein in me.

You don't say when you were banded. I am going to assume very recently. That be the case the first 6 weeks is NOT about losing weight, it is about healing. Yes you need to follow the liquid, mushy guidlines so as not to cause band slipage or any other complications. You have plenty of time to worry about how much you are eating after you get healed up. Cottage cheese, applesauce, yogurt, protein shakes, mashed potato, mashed sweet potato, eggs. These are just a few things you could eat. I drink crystal light to help get my liquid intake in. I can't stress enough that you need to drink a lot. If you were just banded more than likely you do not have anything in your band because it is a time for healing. After you get your first fill then you will need to watch closer what you are eating and the amount. You are starting on an incredible journey. It is worth it. Good luck and if you need any more advice this is the place to get it. There are a lot of wonderful people here who are or have been in the stage you are in. Keep posting and asking questions.

No I. Don't think it does. A drop in Greek yogurt shouldn't really be an issue. I think for those of us like my husband who are sweetening everything they drink and half of what they eat...well, whole different ball game

Fruit and yogurt have carbs and carbs are stored in the liver. The goal of the pre-op diet is to shrink the liver/burn all the stored carbs in your liver. My pre-op diet was basically Adkins phase 1 (high protein, very low carb).

Is Eating Fruit Like Eating Candy?
Candygyrl replied to Elizabeth Anderson RD's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Magazine
Thank you so much for this article. I needed to read this. I have been enjoying my WLS portions of watermelon, strawberries, grapes, blueberries and kiwi. I've been making smoothies paired with greek yogurt, Kale or Baby spinach and although I've not had any stalls in my weight loss yet, I often wonder would I do better without it? Listening to so many others in the community with their take on what we should and should not eat I have to cipher through the nonsense and do what makes sense. I will continue to enjoy my faithful 3-4 servings of fruit daily. Thank you again!!! -
There are a couple of nutrition related areas to be aware of regarding antibiotics. Some antibiotics will interact with certain minerals. These minerals include magnesium and aluminum, which are found in anti-acid medications. Other minerals that can interact with some antibiotics include iron, calcium and zinc. Check your supplements to see if these are included. Some ready to drink protein shakes can be fortified with these minerals. Calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc and aluminum will interact with some antibiotics and make them less effective. You will need to take these minerals several hours apart from the antibiotic. Something else to be aware of is that antibiotics kill bacteria, both the good ones and the bad ones. Therefore, do not take an antibiotic at the same time you take something with probiotics in it like yogurt, kefir or a probiotic supplement. Your antibiotic can kill some of the good bacteria and not have enough left to kill all the bad bacteria. Take the time to read the insert that comes with your antibiotic. If you need further help, consult with your medical team, including your pharmacist. Taking your antibiotic correctly will allow your body to have the best chance to get rid of a bacterial infection.

Puréed stage diet question/help
Afrikanaaa replied to TodayItEnds's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm doing purées right now too, Greek yogurt, mashed potatoes, Popsicles and lentil Soup have been my staples. I tried a 1/2 scrambled egg today. And couldn't even finish that. But can finish one of those light & fit 4 oz yogurts in 30ish minutes. It's weird. -
Hey all .. I see some familiar names in here! Please disregard this post if you see it on another fourm I am 6 weeks out and I have some questions on food phases. I was advised to stay on full liquids for 3 weeks, which I did pretty much without a hitch (hard to believe, but I did it.) Now I'm halfway through my soft foods stage .. I haven't been perfect, but I am doing very well with Carnation Instant Breakfast, scrambled eggs, SF yogurt, tuna, baked fish, etc. I am getting in all of my Protein and most of my Water. My question's this. I don't have a problem eating soft foods for the remaining two weeks, but I am not really losing weight either. In fact, I gained 2.5 lb back when I got on soft foods (I have since realized where I was making my mistakes and tweaked my intake). I have the determination to follow my doctors' advice, but they are very extremely pro-RNY and I feel that my dietary instructions may be more for RNY patients. In fact, the guidelines they provided have a heading that reads "Dietary Requirements for Gastric Bypass." I complained about that, but we will see if they fix it. I have been waiting 30 minutes after eating to drink my water. Is that long enough? Also, could/should I be introducing more solid food to my diet, at 6 weeks out, so that I can maximize my restriction? I don't want to harm anything. Nobody at my doctors' office seems to make any distinction between RNY and Band procedures. I don't think they are making the effort. I didn't get the Inamed booklet or anything Band-related from them. Any advice would be appreciated. Jeanie

Alright my friends! I talked to my dietician yesterday and she said I can start Solid Food in 2 weeks. I am to slowly start introducing new foods at that time so I know what I'm tolerating and what I'm not. So far I've had carnitas minus the tortillas, eggs, bacon, grilled chicken, tuna, peaches, applesauce, ham and yogurt on the soft food diet. I just kinda have those in rotation. I'm excited about incorporating more food but I'm not 100% where to start. It has to stay low carb per my nutritionist. I'm to avoid high carb/ high starch food for at least the next 6 months. Honestly I think I will avoid them the rest of my life. So here's my question... where do I start? I was wondering if salads are back in play or if that's too much ruffage and not enough protein. Advice? I look forward to your answers.
