Not Yet Decided: NEED HELP
TheAngryMeow replied to Peanut120's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just wanted to chime in because I am an EXPERIENCED DUMPER! This is not a title I hold proudly, by the way. I still dump sometimes for no reason at all. It has been the worst thing about this surgery, by far. They do say that gastric bypass has the most chance for dumping, but it most certainly can happen for sleeve patients, too. I am post bypass, but I still have to fight dumping nearly every day. Caffeine is a big trigger, sweets, fried anything and of course meat products. I wasn't told until after I had the surgery that a lot of gastric bypass patients cannot consume meat. This decision should not be taken lightly. I wish I could be this super supporter of WLS, but it's certainly not for everyone. Talk to your doctor, please. Ask a TON of questions. Bring a notepad of everything you wanna know. Ask about things that happen to the small percent of people, because you could be that person. Like me. I promise the result will be worth it, but sometimes people don't want to pay the price of pain. ALSO - I don't vomit like I normally do. Because my stomach is so small, I usually regurgitate and food just falls out. OR if I have to "vomit" really hard, I have to cough to make my stomach push up enough to empty it. I usually blow blood vessels in my eyes because of how hard I need to cough. GOOD LUCK! -
Negative reactions to getting plastics.

If I get anything done, I think it will be a tummy tuck. The hospital where I had my bypass will refer me to their plastic surgeon. They are excellent. -
Considering revision
catwoman7 replied to Revisionist's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
boy - I have no idea. Maybe they would if it was due to medical issues (which it sounds like it is) - unless there's another way to repair a hiatal hernia which doesn't involve a WLS revision. If there is, maybe they'd cover plan B. I hate to even guess, though. You might have to just call the insurance company and ask them (you might have to speak to a supervisor - yours would be kind of an unusual case - the person answering the phone may or may not know) -
Considering revision
StratusPhr replied to Revisionist's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Our BCBS Anthem doesn't cover WLS, any idea if insurance will cover a revision due to GERD and a hiatal hernia? First appointment next month so it has not been suggested or recommended. I'm ahead of myself, but would like to have an idea of what I'm in for. -
Sleeve to RnY Revision
StratusPhr replied to alittler09's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am considering the same thing you did for the same reason. I see this post is from 2017. I'd love an update about GERD/reflux and also weight loss. How much did you lose after the revision, and how are you doing at maintaining? Any regain? Thank you in advance! -

Choosing to have surgery is not cheating. Sure the surgery kick started my weight loss & there are aspects, like the restriction & inability to eat large servings of food, that reduce the opportunity for me to gain. But I’ve worked hard to change how I eat, what I eat & to understand why I eat. Probably way harder than someone who’s never been obese or battled being overweight & certainly harder than when I dieted before. And I work every day at changing a lifetime of bad habits, things that defined who I was & who people thought I was. You have to be ready & willing to make the changes. The difference this time to every other time you’ve dieted is the changes have to be sustainable - permanent & manageable in your life. The surgery doesn’t fix it all for you. If I started eating high fat, high sugar, high processed carb foods, etc. & go back to old habits I’d put on weight again. For most of my adult life I bounced between a bmi of 23 to 29. I gained & lost for 30 years. Then when I was about 50 yrs old it wasn’t 15kgs I needed to lose it was 31 & I couldn’t lose it. All my old dieting tricks failed. I woke one morning at almost 54yrs & said enough, I’m going to have surgery. I didn’t have any health issues at all (except for sore feet & a lack of fitness) but I knew it was in my very near future & I didn’t want to be that big anymore. Is it worth it? You bet it is. I hit my 60kg goal in 6 months, historically my lowest weight as an adult. I lost almost another 12kgs over the next year. I may only have been maintaining at my current weight for 6 months but I have never, ever in my life been able to maintain a low weight after dieting for more than a month. And I haven’t been this weight since I was about 12 yrs old. I don’t know what the next months or years will bring but I’m not going down without a fight. I’d ask why they recommended bypass too if only for your own information & peace of mind. After going through my weight loss & gain history in detail, my surgeon went through the surgical options identifying the pros & cons of each. He then explained which he thought would be best for me & why but he also asked which I thought I’d prefer & why. His process made be more confident about my surgery. Good luck. -
July 2021 Surgery People!

Im getting my revision on July 8th at 9:00 AM. -
I’ve had 3 surgeries since August 2020 which was my VSG to RNY revision. For that one I was told to quarantine and only leave the house for work…. I work in a hospital 😂🤷♀️. For the other 2 they were emergency surgery I was already in the hospital as a patient when I had what’s called a “rapid Covid” done so no quarantine needed.

I have beef and pork rarely because I have to crave them to eat them. They seem to sit well most of the time but I have “off” days with foods every once in a while. Chicken has been my biggest issue after my RNY revision but I’m slowly able to eat it now that I’m 9 months out from it.

Hi everyone! My gastric bypass is the 27th, my birthday actually!. Very anxious and nervous...researched went back and forth over a year and finally decided to do it and was positive about it. Now second guessing things like I’m afraid I won’t be normal and go out to lunch w the girls and enjoy vacations!! I do know that it will get better and those things will happen again but I suppose need some reassurance right now. Can anyone weigh in (no pun intended😆) as to some positive experiences getting back to solid food and feeling normal again?

I don't think many surgeons do the mini bypass in the US, so I can't speak to your actual question (mini-bypass vs the standard gastric bypass), but I just wanted to say that yes, some people would consider getting weight loss surgery "cheating", but if that's the only thing that actually works for many of us to get rid of our excess weight, then so be it. For most of us, it's either that or continue to be morbidly obese and risk our health (and potentially shorten our lives, too). I was more than 200 lbs overweight before surgery. I was constantly dieting and then gaining it back - and the most I could ever lose was 50-60 lbs. Then I'd hit a wall and the weight would gradually come back on. This happened over and over and over again for most of my adult life (I'm in my 60s). Weight loss surgery was the only thing I tried that got me beyond that "wall". I ended up losing all of my excess weight and maintaining most of my loss (like many people, I gained 20 lbs after I hit my lowest weight - but I'm fine with that!). I never could have done this without the surgery. Believe me, I tried... -
I just joined this forum after reading through a myriad of posts. I've practically been a dieter all my life but any weight I've managed to lose always came back and then some. As a child I was the only overweight person in my family – I would gain weight during summer vacations with my grandparents and when I came home my mom put me on a diet. This means I’ve been yo-yoing ever since I was around six years old ☹️. Now I'm knocking on 50 (in 2022) and have decided it is time to change things for good in order to live out the rest of my life as the best version of myself and hopefully healthy. The only time I’ve been “normal weight” in my adult life was in my late teens when I had been on a strict diet and exercised like crazy. I was able to maintain that healthy weight for about a year into my uni life but have been overweight ever since. At some point, I realized that it is unhealthier to keep yo-yoing than being overweight especially since I didn’t experience any weight-related health issues before my forties. I still don’t have any major issues (my sugars and cholesterol levels are a bit high but I don’t need medication yet). I’ve dreamt of WLS for years, but only last year did I start researching my options for real. I live in Finland and you can actually get the surgery here through the public healthcare system, but the wait-times are long and there is no guarantee you will be approved for surgery. Prices for private surgery are high but you can get the same surgery for about half the price in Estonia so that is the option I’m leaning towards. I have been looking at the mini-gastric bypass but when I contacted the clinic, they initially recommended the gastric bypass due to my BMI and age. Does anyone know why this would be (i.e. should I be younger/older and thinner/heavier to be a better candidate for the mini bypass)? I am still contemplating whether I really want to do this, because I have this silly feeling that surgery would be “cheating”. Sorry for the long post. I’m happy to be here and see all the success stories. Can’t wait to e-meet all of you.

Sage advice from a 14 year sleeve (VSG) vet.
SleevedK replied to KateinMichigan's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am sorry you are dealing with this. It is an awful problem. A lot of surgeons will tell you to convert to bypass for bad reflux and a hiatal hernia, but you can try fixing the hiatal hernia and see if that works. For some people, just fixing the hiatal hernia is enough to help the reflux. Since most of our stomach is gone, we can't have a Nissen fundoplication (the usual procedure to fix a hiatal hernia and control acid) but they can still just pull the stomach down into your abdomen and stitch the diaphragm closed. The main reason that is not always their first choice is because that may have a higher failure rate. Another option if your esophagus is strong enough for it would be to get a Linx device, since that seems to help keep hiatal hernias from coming back too. -

My GERD just got worse with time after my VSG in November 2015. After all the diagnostic tests were positive, I had a bypass done in October 2020 to resolve GERD, Gastritis and Esophagitis that no longer responded to medication. I have not had one episode of GERD or heartburn since. The results have been remarkable nd I'm so glad I had the surgery. -
Any April 2021 surgeries?!
Struggling a bit replied to KidaandRoux's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had bypass on 4/15. I was 280 and lost 10 during the 5 days pre-op. After getting home from surgery I couldn’t stomach anything except water so by the 27th I had lost 31. Since the 27th I have only lost 9 more pounds. I was stuck for almost two weeks. I feel your pain! -

How soon did you start drinking alcohol?
Taylor33 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I am having bypass 06/04/2021 and have a wedding in July, August, and September and would love a glass of wine at them. But I’m super nervous. How soon did you drink? -
Mini gastric bypass is similar to RNY except that it has 1 joining (anastomosis) instead of 2 with the RNY bypass. Surgery and recovery are a bit quicker as a result. It has pretty similar results, although RNY is still considered the gold standard. Hey wow, your surgery is getting super close now!! I wish you the best of luck and I hope it all goes very smoothly and recovery is quick and relatively easy for you. Please do come back here when you feel up to it, and let us know how it all went. ❤

Anthem denied claim after surgery completed
StratusPhr replied to DeeTee's topic in Insurance & Financing
I am possibly looking at a revision from sleeve to RNY. GERD, and apparently I have a small ulcer and had a stricture. I was cash pay for the sleeve, any experience with insurance, specifically Anthem BCBS covering this if it comes to that? Thanks y'all. -
Do you have much heartburn after bypass?
Supersam replied to Katja's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had a hiatal hernia and GERD prior to bypass. I’ve been on Nexium and Pepcid daily for years. After bypass surgery, so far I have had no heartburn. He’s planning on taking me off the Nexium in several weeks now. -
What was your tipping point?
ruthpets replied to 3tallwomen's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My tipping point: My mom started having weight-related health problems at a young age - late 40's - (she developed high BP, Type2 diabetes, eventually congestive heart failure) and died at age 74. In fact, she was hospitalized for heart issues, and in the same hospital as I was when I was giving birth to my youngest child at age 41! She didn't even live to see my daughter's first birthday. Anyway, long story short, a year after my mom died, I was 80 pounds overweight and saw myself going down the same exact path. This was all 12 years ago; got a Lapband, lost the weight and just recently got a VSG revision because of a hernia and GERD. Losing weight has changed me in so many ways, not the least of which is freeing me from my "living to eat" mentality. I still enjoy food but I know at the end of the day, it's just a meal. All my best to you - it's the start of something wonderful for you! -
My surgery date is May 24 - going in for bypass, but potential sleeve if the doctor thinks it’s safer based on how everything looks. Been on liver shrink for 2 weeks already, this is my 3rd.

Considering revision
Tracyringo replied to Revisionist's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I agree with greentealael and considering you dont have issues with GERD a DS may be better for you since you have more excess weight to lose. I would absolutely ask the surgeon his thought on it. No restriction on RNY for me after my revision but luckily I dump and cannot over eat without getting violently ill so it keeps me in check. -
Do you have much heartburn after bypass?
Dinah55 replied to Katja's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had a hiatal hernia repair when I had my bypass, and I had suffered from daily GERD pains prior to bypass. I took omeprazole for about six weeks after my surgery, and then quit when my prescription ran out. Since then, I have had NO pain from GERD. What a relief it is to have pain-free days! I'm very grateful that my doc recommended the bypass instead of the sleeve, which is what I had originally wanted.
