It'll pass faster than you think, I had to do 6 months but my dr accepted a previous month as a starting point, would tha work for you? My cousin just had sleeve on 3/21 and she purchased a insurance thru the droctor office to cover complications it was 1200.00 and covered any dr anywhere...just saying it does exist if you are leaning toward self pay. She pd 12,200.00 and tht included EVERYTHING! Good Luck you'll love this forum. Eyeryone is super supportive!! -
New Here Looking For Suggestions

Definitely recommend Dr. James Davidson in Dallas now that I'm post op with no complications! I was referred to him by 2 other friends here in Dallas who used him 3 years ago. One of my friends' dad is a top plastic surgeon in Dallas and this is who he referred his daughter to use when she decided on the surgery. I'm not sure if you are part of the christian sleever group, but I have never felt more at peace with my decision that right Before the surgery when Dr. Davidson came in and asked if we could pray together before anesthesia arrived. He took my hand and thanked God for so many things, then asked God for guidance and a quick recovery for myself and my family. I could not have been any more calm and relaxed knowing this surgeon has a personal relationship with the Lord and understands what a big decision this is for people like us. Smooth as could be, anesthesia came in and they started 5 minutes later! Arrived home yesterday, walked two miles today and I am completely off pain meds already 3 days post op! I couldn't be happier! -
LI had surgery at kaiser richmond with Dr. Baggs. Everything went wonderful. I have my 1 month follow up appt tomorrow. I have lost 28 pounds since surgery on dec 13th. After researching the band I decided that there were too many complications and I did not want my intestines rerouted so that left out rny. I went back to work after 2 weeks but I was really tired so did half days the latter part of the 3rd week. Each day and each week I am feeling better and better. There is a kaiser thread under general sleeve discussion with people who have been to richmond or south sf. You should check it out. Good luck!

According to the internet: Nausea and vomiting are the most common complaints after bariatric surgery, and they are typically associated with inappropriate diet and noncompliance with a gastroplasty diet (ie, eat undisturbed, chew meticulously, never drink with meals, and wait 2 hours before drinking after solid food is consumed). If these symptoms are associated with epigastric pain, significant dehydration, or not explained by dietary indiscretions, an alternative diagnosis must be explored. One of the most common complications causing nausea and vomiting in gastric bypass patients is anastomotic ulcers, with and without stomal stenosis. Ulceration or stenosis at the gastrojejunostomy of the gastric bypass has a reported incidence of 3% to 20%. Although no unifying explanation for the etiology of anastomotic ulcers exists, most experts agree that the pathogenesis is likely multifactorial. These ulcers are thought to be due to a combination of preserved acid secretion in the pouch, tension from the Roux limb, ischemia from the operation, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use, and perhaps Helicobacter pylori infection. Evidence suggests that little acid is secreted in the gastric bypass pouch; however, staple line dehiscence may lead to excessive acid bathing of the anastomosis. Treatment for both marginal ulcers and stomal ulcers should include avoidance of NSAIDs, antisecretory therapy with proton-pump inhibitors, and/or sucralfate. In addition, H pylori infection should be identified and treated, if present. So generally what this is saying is 1) stay off all NSAIDs such as aspirin and excedrin that contains aspirin. 2) use a proton pump inhibitor such as prilosec (omeprazole). My surgeon recommended I take this daily for the first year so that my stomach would heal properly. At the end of my first year I discontinued it. I am now 5 years post-op. 3) make sure you were tested for Helicobacter pylori infection. This is a very common infection, one that is somewhat hidden because of a lack of symptoms. The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily protein, fluid and vitamin requirements. Food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. So my first concerns are not focused on food but rather to make sure you are meeting your daily protein and fluid requirements.

I had my surgery at Kaiser Richmond by Dr Fisher I was originally looking at the lapband but decided on the sleeve. My reasons were, less maintanence, no foreign objects in my body, less invasive then RNY. I also felt the complication rate for lap bands later on was too significant I was in a lot of pain for the first 3-4 days and took my pain medication reguarly and asked for a refill. Keep in mind i also had a hernia repair so I am sure that affected my recovery. i tried going back to work after 2 weeks but was too tired and weak.. I ended up taking a month off. everyone is different though, you could bounce back after a few days if your lucky.. I hope all goes well and wish you the best of luck !!!

Kinda sounds like a leak of some nature. I am curios though why, if indeed there is a leak, your doc wouldn't do a procedure to fix the leak and allow you to continue progressing with the band? Are you having other complications that would warrant going to the sleeve? Brad

when I had my VSG surgery my surgeon discovered that I needed to have my gall bladder out. He said that he would do it after I lost 150# and that he would also "tighten up" my sleeve at the same time. During our initial consulation, when he wanted me to do a bypass, but I was vehemently opposed to it, my surgeon said it was always an option if I didn't lose what I wanted. I read somewhere that initially the sleeve was done as a precursor to bypass for those patients who were too heavy to initially undergo bypass surgery. Because the sleeve can be done easier on super obese patients than the bypass. I'm hoping that I will be successful with the sleeve, as I certainly don't want to have to undergo one of the other WLS's with all their complications.

Excited - but still have 5 months to wait :(
MeMeMEEE posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Well I have decided there is no "leaning" toward the sleeve - it is definitely the one I want. My appointment with the surgeon is April 7th but my insurance just changed and now I have to see my primary Doctor for 6 months instead of 3 - a little disappointed, if I had not sat on the fence for a month I would probably be scheduled already But hey, all in good time. I now think it will be August, hopefully earlier in the month and not latter!! I joined weight watchers this week in hopes to start losing some now and as part of my "plan" with my doctor - even if I lose 50 lbs I still have a high enough BMI. I went ahead and scheduled all my monthly visits with my doctor. Honestly, if it weren't for all the scary "your insurance won't pay for complications" I would go to Mexico and have it done tomorrow!!! I am really enjoying reading everyone's posts, this is a great board. I don't know anyone around me who has had the sleeve, pretty new around here I believe. I know a ton who have had RNY and a few with Lap Band and one with DS but that's it so this board has been so helpful!! Thanks everyone! -
Found out Thursday my band had slipped. Found out Friday I'd be having surgery this Wednesday to have it removed with my choice of replacement (the nurse originally said he'd be putting in another band but after all the issues I've had I told her I'd go with nothing before I had another band and magically it became my choice!). If I have no serious damage once he's inside he will do RNY at that time, if there's anything that needs to heal I will be closed up and come back in 6-12 months for the RNY. I've had 5 days to prep and learn everything I can about pre and post op diets and have spent the weekend nesting and trying to get everything ready for the next 6 weeks or so. I'm frantic!!!!! Although a 5 day liquid diet is soooo much better than the 2 weeks long misery before! Wish me luck Wednesday and keep your fingers crossed that there will be no complications and I can go straight to bypass!!!!

4 years post op and can’t lose a pound
Greensleevie replied to BriWLS's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Try eating clean for a week. No/low sugar, no wheat/oat based carbs. Protein, veggies, maybe a little dairy as in cheese. VERY little. Get at least 90 grams of protein, under 50 carbs, and under 25 of sugar. If you are exercising like you say you are, bump your calories up to 1200. You say you are tracking but if you knew what to look for, you would see you are eating far too much sugar with the oatmeal and far too many carbs with that melba toast. I'm sure there is more, but that is just one example of things that aren't helping. I too am 4 years post op, and unfortunately our metabolisms change as time goes by. Gone are the days of easy weight loss with just cutting calories. Weight loss becomes much more complicated, and macros become even more important. Half assing or guessing what macros your ingesting every day won't work. You have to measure where you are to get where you want to be. Follow my advice for a week. I guarantee you'll lose weight. -
Muscular Weakness after Bypass?
catwoman7 replied to brownp16's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I just read a peer-reviewed article online that said myopathy is a rare complication, but it's related to vitamin deficiency - and usually in people who haven't been taking their vitamins. It's usually resolved when they start up with supplements again. But in your case, there aren't any deficiencies showing up in your bloodwork - so yea, this one is puzzling. -
Does everyone have a drain after surgery?
swizzly replied to fatBgone's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine was in for the first five days I was in hospital, and they removed it on night five, prior to my getting discharged the following afternoon, day six post-op (no complications, just SOP here). Didn't really hurt while it was in, just felt odd coming out -- took about two seconds to take it out anyhow. -
It's getting nearer to Tuesday:scared0:. I sincerely appreciate your support and prayers. I want to send love out to all of you and pray for all of us to have a complication free surgery with a "speedy and uneventful recovery". Thank you God for being with us.

Low BMI of 38 would you do the surgery or have you done the sleeve?
PdxMan replied to Zen's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
As you do your due diligence in researching whether a WLS procedure is right for you, please be sure to research the complications and talk to your surgeon about them, too. I am not going to quote an absolute percentage, but I do know that for the sleeve, it is under 3%. Iggy fell into that 3% and I read through a lot of her posts during her recovery. It was truly heartbreaking and I am so thankful she is recovering and remaining a member of VST, if for no other reason than to remind folks researching the sleeve to do their homework and know the complications. My surgeon had less than a 1% complication rate, so be sure to ask them, too. And not just leaks right after the surgery, you need to ask them about complications with their patients 2,4,6 ... months out as that is when some of the issues present themselves. I am not a risk taker by any means, but i was willing to take on the <3% complication rate and believe I would be able to get through whatever it would be. I had <3% chance of a complication, but I had a 100% chance of complications from being morbidly obese. I needed a change with my relationship with food and the sleeve has helped me do this. I love my sleeve and wouldn't change a thing. -
Oct. 2014 Sleever's, its been 6 months!
dtiller1147 replied to Unstoppable's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Things are going well with no complications so far. I have lost 95# since I started down the surgery path. Pre-diabets is now in remission A1c is now "normal"!!! I am down to 1 BP pill, 1 chols pill and 1 RLS pill (this will probably never go away). Doc thinks I may go off my CPAP by my 1 year date. Having to lower pressure down now. -
Has anyone seen this article regarding WLS?
valzie replied to Qvrfullmidwife's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
There is always risk in surgery. I know a guy who went in for a hip replacement and was ready to go home and died of a blood clot. Things happen. However more patients die from gastric bipass than lapband. The risks and complications are few. Everyone is entitiled to thier opinion and each one of us have to make our own dicisions. It is up to each of us to do our homework and feel comfortable with what we decide. -
Staph infections can cause a number of different problems. Toxic shock, cellulitis, impetigo, among others. One of the more serious possibilities is that it can infect your heart valves and actually require valve replacement. It's not an infection to take lightly. Scabbing over of your incision may be a very good thing. When I was hositalized, Dr. Ren was waiting for my incision to stop leaking serous Fluid (clear, looks like water). After the incision healed over, I still had some fluid collecting behind the scar. The amount has diminished with time. Your body will eventually absorb the extra liquid. However, if you're producing pus or a colored fluid, your doctor may want to keep the incision draining. You should definitely stay in very close contact with the doctor to be certain it's getting better. I know how difficult it can be to stay positive when you're having complications. There were times I was ready to have the whole thing taken out. But, if you can hang in and allow everything to heal, the benefits to your health will make it worth all the frustration. Keep us posted on how you're doing.

Thinking about having the Lap Band surgery...
Marimaru replied to TRN87's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
There are 2 forums here you should probably check out, 1 is the complications forum, and the 2nd is a forum for people who've had to have their bands removed. You might check those out for information. -
Surgery Consult Questions.
legal loser replied to Losingitforgood!'s topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ask about your surgeon about his success rate and complication rate. Ask how long his patients have to be off work on average. Questions about recovery, how long before you can do things. How long is the hospital stay. His goal weight for you, follow up care....do you see him or a PA. Anything that comes to your mind. Anything you need an answer with to be comfortable with your decision to have surgery. No question is dumb. -
What happens after gastric band removal without additional bariatric surgery?
cheryl2586 replied to JACKIEO85's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Gaining weight after band removal is not a necessity. If you stop dieting and lose portion control of course you are going to gain the weight back. Some people still have restriction once the band is removed because of the scar tissue. I do not believe that band failure is as common as most think. Of course there will always be a complication to any weight loss surgeries but most patients who have their bands removed is because they did not comply with their program their doctor put in place for them. -
I also live in Wichita but I'm going to Kansas City for my surgery. I won't elaborate with why I say this but I wouldn't let any of the surgeons in that group touch me. Frankly, I'm not surprised this happened. I have seen his patients have a lot of complications post op. It's been worth the 8-10 trips to KC to go where I feel safe. Wishing you the best with whatever your decision is.

questions and concerns..
Kristen1215 replied to KTK1982's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi KTK. My husband and I have had the lap band for 2 years now. We have a friend that had the Gastric Bypass a year and a half ago. She lost her first 100 lbs faster than us, however she has had many complications. We have had absolutely no complications and over time, we have lost more weight. Both surgeries are very effective however there are people that have not been successful with either one. The Lap Band and the Gastic bypass are only tools. You get out them what you put in to it. I chose the Lap band because I felt re arranging my insides was a bit much. The Lap Band is adjustable and reversable and it has worked great for both of us. Feel free to contact me if you think of any questions. I love giving the advise that helped my husband and I. We are both half the size we use to be =-). Good Luck. Once you start see the results, it become an easy life style to adapt to. -
Surgery Consult Questions.
Pattyhdz replied to Losingitforgood!'s topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have an appt Friday , so far on my list I have, leak rate and complications , how well do revisions recover , any preventive post op meds like Prilosec needed. Any other questions are welcomed -
My pre-op is two shakes a day, and salad with 2oz. Lean meat with fat free dressing. I don't have to technically start until Wednesday, but I started on march 3. Yesterday my family went to five guys. I ordered a burger, thinking what the hell. Last time, right? Let me tell you. Your tummy will actually get used to the shakes or liquids. I was in so much pain from the burger I could only bend over the counter top and not be in pain. Awful. Woke up looking forward to protein and salad. You cheated? So what. Don't do it again. And they will still sleeve you, just make sure that you are being careful from here on out. My Dr. told me, "plenty of people have emergency surgery without the shakes and such, but they are the ones with complications. If you drink your way to surgery day, you will be great." GOOD LUCK!!

Did you have your band unfilled prior to revision surgery?
Fatty McFatster replied to btradio's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I haven't had my band to sleeve revision surgery yet, but had to have my band emptied earlier this year due to complications. Good luck to you!
