  1. Hi Marsha I am feeling weak right now, but I know that tomorrow will be better (at least I hope so, I have to work...). The liquid diet was a requirement for me, they said if I don't do it the surgery could be canceled. I think it is a good idea anyway, you should do at least 3 or 4 days prior your surgery. I am taking a Protein shake formulated by my doctor. When do you have your last visit with your doctor before the surgery? Mine was schedule for the day before the surgery. Two days before the sugery I will have a consultation with the nutricionist.

    Bypass or sleeve?

I chose the sleeve, because the complications and malabsorption with bypass always bothered me. When I heard the sleeve was proven effective I knew it was the one for me if I was going surgery route. I first attempted to lose on my own a few years back. I also have hormonal conditions such as autoimmune thyroid and PCOS, which lead me to believed I had malabsorption issues just from things I noticed with how I felt. They did confirm when they did Vitamin levels that I was deficient in several and close to being deficient in one. I feel more comfortable giving my body the change to absorb as much as it can by still having my stomach and not re-routing GI tract and lose/maintain healthy weight at the same time. Plus, I've never been fixated on being an unrealistic weight goal or loss. I am very realistic - my goal was in line with the weight range my dietitian gave me which will still have me in the obese category technically for my height... I'm looking to be healthier, more mobile, and have more strength not to be thin per se or a certain pant size. Lastly, I had hoped to avoid as much distress of loose skin, and thought I'd be better with sleeve since my end goal after surgery would still be quite overweight. I've lost around 7% so far of my body weight at a normal, healthy rate, and honestly I've already started noticing changes with my skin. When I lost significant weight (almost 100lbs) a few years back I had virtually no loose skin except an unnoticeable to others amount on my stomach. As I lose now I am coming to terms with the likelihood I will require some skin removal, and should start savings now. I had hoped I could just be okay with it and wear it proudly, but I'm actually having skin irritation already just from around 25lb loss. Each weight loss journey a person has is different. This experience is so much different from my last one just a few years ago. And as everyone pointed out you can gain with either option which is often shown on weight loss documentaries. I was told by my program's psychologist to prepare for a 10-20lb weight gain after you hit your goal weight, and to set a limit you will not allow yourself to go over i.e. 200lbs, so if you reach that point you reevaluate yourself and get back on track, because weight will always be an issue for each of us, and everyone that loses through whatever means has to stay on top of it or it'll become uncontrollable. 3. Surgery date was May 4 the pain was horrible. I had my gallbladder removed also. I couldn't take down much fluids at first. I don't like the full feeling. So I have learned how to listen to my body. meat makes me feel really full so I have became a Vegan!!!!!...... Everything taste very different!! For some odd reason I love vegetables now. I started walking 45 min 5 days a week and Water aerobics 3 times a week for a hour.( 3 weeks ago). I also use weights when walking. Breakfast and lunch is Protein shakes. The weight has started to melt off. I'm usually a couch potato with no energy for nothing. If you can push yourself you will begin to love working out. I crave it now!!!.... It feels good to have some energy........ It does get better.(12 weeks post op.)... Started at 311 I'm now 256...... Sent from my SM-G925T using the BariatricPal App

    My own personal nightmare

Sorry to hear about all your surgeries. I guess I have been very fortunate. I hope this is the beginning of a healthier and more enjoyable life for you. The gastric sleeve will give you the start you need to reduce food intake and lose weight. I have been successful in losing 32 lbs in 8 weeks. Sounds like we are about the same age - menopausal, prediabetic, and thyroid issues as well! This has helped me where other diets failed. You literally can not overeat unless you are willing to face the consequences...nausea, acid reflux, and the worse...vomitting! The first phase is the hardest and I'm sure you will be fine once you are past that. I drink and change up my Protein shakes for variety. You should see my collection. I think Chike is my favorite brand - strawberry and the coffee are awesome. I actually have not had much hunger. At 8 weeks I eat three times a day and drink two Protein Shakes in between. I get "head hungry" and want to eat what other people are eating around me but have managed to do well and only cheated a couple of times. I REALLY miss bread, rice, potatoes, and Pasta. Pasta...oh, how I love pasta. But I am determined to lose this! I can't wait to go from obese to overweight and from overweight to normal. Yea buddy! God bless you!

Welcome!! And what great progress you have made so far! A stall since November must really be frustrating. How many calories / Protein grams / carb grams / fat grams are you having daily? Have you contacted your NUT to see if they can help? It seems most folks either realize they have been grazing, taking in too many carbs or just need to actually up their protein to kick it in to gear. Also I have seen people try liquids (protein shakes) for a few days to kick the stall out. Give us a better idea of what you are doing currently and maybe we can help.

Welcome. Without knowing what you are doing it is hard to give suggestions. I recommend that if you are unhappy with where you are that you make an appointment with your NUT to talk about your goals. In the meantime, go back to basics. Follow your program. Track your food. Make sure you are reaching your Protein target every day. Get at least 64 oz of Fluid every day. Take your Vitamins and supplements as directed. Avoid starches, added sugars, and fried foods. Exercise. Embrace the Stall http://BariatricPal.com/index.php?/topic/351046-Embrace-the-Stall

    My new sleeved life

@@GeekyChicLa Are you getting the sleeve also? Monday-Friday I have my food pretty much prepared and on hand while I'm at work, I'm pretty much routine during the week. On the weekends there has been times when I forget to eat or have to remember to eat because I'm running around like a crazy person. I've learned to carry a Protein bar with me for those times. The only food that gave me trouble was beef and broccoli from a Chinese restaurant, I will never eat it again. I believe it was just too tuff and I didn't chew it well enough. I was in pain for a few hours even after it came back up. I have had no problem with spicy foods, I don't eat a lot of it but when I have there where no issues. My advice on alcohol is to make that one drink last the evening. Just taking sips here and there it goes right to my head. I woke with one hangover since my surgery and it was not fun at all. That was on 2 and half glasses of wine. I remember one of my first posts on this site was me asking how to get enough Water in each day when all I can do is sip sip sip. Someone told me to take a gulp , go ahead it won't hurt me. Sure enough it didn't hurt me lol and I was able to get my water in for the day (I even drink throu a straw ) So a lot is trial and error, take a taste and see how you do. You will find what works and what doesn't. Also things are just very different now, things that I thought I were really going to miss or that I couldn't have anymore are really not a big deal, Food just doesn't excite me anymore, I much rather fix a huge meal for a lot of people and watch them enjoy it. Did I do the right thing?

Hopefully your hormones are just out of whack making you feel this way. You have lost a significant amount of weight already so I would guess that getting healthy really is important to you. Having all of this junk around does make it much harder and there are times when we all slip but it should be the exception and not the rule. The other thing is, it is very hard to force the people around you to change because of your disease but like others said it doesn't mean you can't make that happen albeit slowly. I am the cook in my family and just started changing how I cook. I make a Protein, veggie and salad almost every night. Maybe once or twice a week I will make a potato, rice or other starch. Sometimes I have a spoonful of mashed potatoes sometimes I choose not to. I have found over time that my hubby likes this new way of eating and actually requests many of these foods. I have also learned that he can have his fast food for lunch when he chooses and it really does not bother me anymore. For me, that food is just no longer desirable and I used to eat it everyday. When I think about what I ate before, it sickens me. How many times I would stop on my way home at McDonald's eat crap from there and then go home to cook for my family. I am glad you are talking to a therapist on Monday. Give yourself some time to adjust and give your man a break too. They didn't choose this so it may take some time to adjust as well.
  12. Hi, my name is Yasmin and I am schedule to be banded June 2nd, 2006. In Mexico.Yikes! I did do my research and am as comfortable as I am going to get with surgery in Mexico but due to the cost it really is my only option. So any pointers, stories, ideas would be greatly appreciated. I hope the best for all of us and pray that everything goes well. I have several questions about diet, excersize, expected weight loss, etc. Please send any tips or comments on these subjects. I have read everything out there on the internet but really would like to hear from those who have had the procedure and are living with it. Also, I live in Idaho and am having problems with finding a follow up doctor, so if anyone knows of one in or around ID please let me know the name and no. I have made arrangements to follow up in Mexico if all else fails, but would prefer a closer doc. Thanks and God Bless, Yasmin :peace:

Hoping to get Banded in Morris MN

Hi Shelly, Glad I didn't scare ya off honey! LOL! I just wanted you to know the truth, he's tough, but it's tough love. If this is the groove that you need to get ya going, so be it. I accepted it completely, and it's proved to be what I needed to gain accountability for my eating. I started eating and acting like a Bandster. I ate my Protein first, then non-starchy veggies and avoided bread for the most part. I worked hard to stick with reasonable portions and calorie limits. Eating with smaller spoon helps, as does remembering to drink all the Water, at least 64 oz a day. I chose to stop drinking with meals too. Call it training, chew chew chew, this is something that is way too easy to forget. LOL! I worked on getting three meals a day, little or no snacking, and worked very hard on clearing out the junk food in my house. I measured portions for everyone, including my three kids, and hubby. I dished up meals, planned nutritonally balanced wholesome foods and cut out all trips to any fast food places...no candy, no chips, no Cookies, etc. I will be honest, there were times when my resolve was severely tested, I redirect as much as possible, and spend my days wearing my shoes. IF my mood hits, I am out the door stomping out my frustrations and getting my blood pressure and heart rate up for a good reason. It helped me to journal my thoughts too. I went from complete and total lathargic mode to insominia. LOL! On this Thursday, I will be post op 8 weeks. I had considered RNY at one time, but the risks scared me...the potential for complications was not something I was willing to accept. With three kids, 8,7 and 5, I can't accept that I may have risked so much more to be thin. So far, my experience has been a good one with only a minor blip in the whole trip. Once I understood that life on the otherside wouldn't be as restricted, I knew that I could live within my new limits...that I would be allowed the control in my life that I craved. Not only has it helped me lose 42 pounds total, with 29 since surgery, I've gained so much mentally. That call from Sherry will come soon enough!!! Hang in there and do what ya can to prepare! ((HUGS)) Linda
  14. HI everyone. I had a Lap band to a Mini Bypass revision on July 5th. So far. I have lost 23 pounds, but somehow I keep feeling that it should be a bit more. after some difficulty in the first two months with my eating. With a lot of food rejection, I now feel that I can eat quite well. I can eat a small size of fish, or one whole very well cooked and soft chicken thigh. I avoid carbohydrates to maybe one dry diet cracker in the morning with cottage and s bit at lunch (at the most have half a potato or a spoonful of carrots or zucchini with the protein) and concentrate on the protein. I walk a lot on my job (I am a tour guide) sometimes for two whole hours.. I try to drink enough ( I usually mix water with sugarless ice tea powder, as flavoured water goes down easier for me ) I completely avoid sweets, pasta, bread, and eat very little fruit. Also I am not experiencing any cravings really, and because I am eating protein 3 times a day I think that I am getting enough protein and still the weight loss seems to stall. Or am I being unrealistic?? Or maybe I am doing something wrong? Last week. I was at 24 pounds less, this week it came back to 23., I am starting to feel frustrated with this up and down effect!! I would really appreciate some feedback from those of you who went through this before, and how you managed to overcome this! For the record, as this might be an important detail, I am 61. Thanks a lot for taking the time to read and answer. All the best to everyone. Sent from my D6603 using BariatricPal mobile app Sent from my D6603 using BariatricPal mobile app

    New To Post Op Life

Yep! That's exactly what I did. A package of the sugar free chocolate Carnation and 1/2 scoop of chocolate protein powder. It takes a while to get it all down, though. I got the unflavored protein powder to add to cream of wheat and mashed potatoes, but it can be kinda gross depending on what you add it to. I've been told that BeneProtein is the best cuz it doesn't add as much texture or flavor.

    Almost there

If your pre-op diet is like mine, it was liquid. Protein shakes; ff milk; be sure to have the sf popsicles and sf Jello on hand. Also I found that mixing a vanilla Protein shake with pre mixed crystal light (most any flavor) instead of milk or plain Water provided a nice flavor change. Good Luck; I've been VERY happy with my band thus far. No issues to speak of. I too am far from my doc and support group; this site is invaluable for answering most questions, and feeling connected.

    Three Weeks out

Wow, thanks for posting that! Congrats on your banding and your decision to do it and for losing 35 pounds - forever!!!!! My doctor not only requires the 2 weeks pre-op liquid diet (no sugar and lots of Protein drinks), 4 weeks pre-op he requires that you begin getting use to the liquid phase by having 2 Protein drinks a day and only one meal. I keep questioning if I can do this but after reading your post, I know I will, I know I must. My doctor has also subscribed a new med on the market to keep you from vomitting after surgery. He's also one of the few doctors who requires that you give yourself injections of a blood thinning med to keep the possiblities of blood clots down. congrats again!!! and happy banding~ you're doing great

    Soft food stage

I wasn't given volumes except for protein and water. However, I remember just a few bites were enough at that stage. Once on solids, my average is 7-10 bites. My surgeon is good with that. I am 5.5 mths out.
  25. Getting ready for my upcoming sleeve, and have been doing some label reading at the grocery store... What Soups have higher amounts of Protein? I looked at several today and all were about 5-7g protein per 1 cup serving. Seems like it would be impossible to use that for a meal or two and still meet protein goal for the day. Chili was much better at around 23g protein per 1 cup serving, but I'd love to have Soup for variety! Any suggestions appreciated Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
