Where is the Love!!!...Brotherly & Sisterly Love :-)
sylvia2017 replied to Sammie1221's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, I'm 10 days post op and doing great. Day of surgery weighed 319 now I'm 289. Hard to believe but 30 lbs in 10 days. Most of it was water weight. My legs and feet were always swollen. Now I can see my ankle bones and calves are smaller. Also the first week it's hard to get much down. My dr had me on clear diet for 2 days and I couldn't stand broth so I lived on jello, apple juice, protein waters. And lots of water. The 3rd day I could have protein shakes, sf chocolate pudding, and Greek yogurt. I still only eat about 3 bites. Or can only get a half of the shake down but I drink lots of water. I'm getting about 400 or less calories. Oikos triple zero Greek yogurt is my go to for meals at this point. I have sf popcicles and organic tomato juice with seasalt found at publix it's a nice change from all the sweet stuff. Publix also has a protein milk called Rockin refuel that has 30 grams protein taste just like real chocolate milk and it's lactose free. I love it. The first 5 days were hard for me nausea was really bad. And smells really bothered me. It's gotten better. The pain was not near as bad as I imagined. Protein, water, and walking is the key. Also as soon as you fill full stop. Even if I have 2 bites and feel full I quit. I hate to vomit and haven't so far. Listen to your body and you will do great. It's hard and you will have days better than others. I literally just walk it off. That helps. Good luck to you. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using BariatricPal mobile app -

Have my surgery date 8/18 when I went for results visit. Now on liver reduction into 2ND week w/pretty diarrhea beginning today. But bigger issue is my surgeon's staff was supposed to get my CPAP machine to me in May& despite my pleas by phone&via the office portal, NOTHING. I won't be allowed my surgery w/o CPAP for some time. At my results spot. my surgeon froze like a statue, when I told him, no I had not been using the machine. No one from his staff even tried. He left the room, talked to staff & two told me I would be called the next day. Nothing. Monday. Nothing. All last week I waited. Friday...she called & said someone from the company would call me in 10 minutes. Nothing. I waited an hour, called & told she was at lunch. Long story short....she never came back from lunch. So here I am...back waiting...4 months for a CPAP machine& oh yeah, I have severe sleep apnea. What the heck does it take to get a CPAP machine? BTW...I live near Raleigh, NC. There are many suppliers. Tomorrow am I'm getting on the phone to as many as possible. Any thoughts, ideas? Need to know also are these high protein shakes supposed to cause diarrhea? Feel like I'm right back to colonoscopy prep. Thanks Sent from my HTCD100LVWPP using BariatricPal mobile app

Was on liquids for only one week. Dr. said to go to the next phase. Talked to my dietician and she said basically whatever I can chew to apple sauce feel it was okay. I'm kind of worried though if I'm healing the right way. But Dr. and Dietician said it is okay. I did feel the tightness the second week. Now going into the third week no tightness. I do stop myself. I would like to get a fill but won't see the Dr. till the 9th of Oct. for my first fill. Just remember protein first, vegetable or fruit and if enough room starch. Which you will find out no room. Hope this help a little:thumbup:

Pre-Surgery Weight Loss Without A Liquid Diet
Ready4success replied to Half~of~Bri's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't have a date yet, but I got inspired by everybody and started a high protein/ low carb diet. My biggest struggle has been eliminating sodas from my diet (I was a heavy Dr. Pepper drinker). I'm so not looking forward to the liquid pre-op diet. -
Sleeve to Bypass Revision
SleeveandRNYchica replied to chasingpolaris321's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I can understand you concern with the Barrett's Esophagus. I was worried that I would have damage as well. I hope you can come to a quick solution. I am currently working on meeting all the insurance requirements. My best guess is that I will have surgery in late Sept, early October. I actually lived abroad for my first surgery. My surgery team was great. Follow-up care great. For me, I think bypass would have been the best option initially. Are you nervous about having the bypass? There are several posts about people revising due to GERD and/or Barrett's. What insurance due u have? -
she's wrong. Of course some people have complications - you can have complications from any surgery, not just bariatric surgery. People have died from tonsillectomies, after all. But most bariatric patients don't have issues, and complications when they do occur are usually minor and "fixable". That's not to say no one ever has major complications, but they're really uncommon. And the mortality rate for gastric bypass is 0.3%. It's even less for sleeve. So you have at least a 99.7% chance of not dying. as far as untimely death, you're a lot more likely to have an untimely death from complications due to obesity than you are from bariatric surgery. yes you are on a very limited calorie diet for the first few months, but it's medically supervised and they do labs every few months during that first year, so they can catch things before they become problematic. Plus you're taking lots of supplements - protein, vitamins, minerals - to prevent major problems, too. I had follow ups and labs done every three months my first year. After that, you're eating more normally, so you really have to be closely monitored only during the first few months post-op. I think your friend is dealing with some very dated information - or complete misinformation.

Post-Banding Reassurance
shortgal replied to allheart's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was banded 11/27. My incisions were never sore ( they were stiched and then glued, not stapled) BUT the gas pains the first four days were bad. Felt like an elephant sitting on my chest and the pain radiated to my left shoulder. I was on Clear Liquids the first week and the first few days I could not get in all the Protein drink I was supposed to drink. Each day got better and each day I was able to drink more. After the weeks, I switched to "full" liquids for another weeks, then the following week onto soft, mushie food. Everyone is diffeent tho'. Hope the info helps and hope you feel better soon. -
One Month To Go- Nervous But Can't Wait
Neen replied to Ellie_Grace's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Don't do the last suppers!!! My friend did and put on 18 pounds in two weeks. Her op was a few years before mine. And now if there is a weight gain between the first consult and surgery, they stop the surgery. This is the surgeries rules, as the want everyone to get on board mentally before the op. I agree best option is eat health and similar to want is expected afterwards, although your portion pre-op are going to be alot larger. I'm 5days post op my meals are 4teaspoons of soft mushy food. -

Desperately need some help
annielkd replied to cyndilou29's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Although I am able to get down something... and liquids... I freaked out till now. I thought there was something wrong with me. I had a tough time too. I can tell you for some reason hot items go down easier for me. I could drink about 4 oz of protein (hot) and it would take about an hour. (Try unjury... it tastse like hot chocolate)... I'm supposed to be on soft food by Monday... but, I still can't do pureed. When I was in the hospital I had trouble getting down anything, and the woman next to me downed her broth, two juices, and a tea! I'm glad to know it's just the band is small. Do you think I can pursuade the doctor not to fill in 6 weeks? -
Surgery is just one part. You have to be willing to put in the work and effort to change a lifetime of bad habits. For the first month or two you will probably struggle to meet goals set by your doctor or dietician to get your protein and water goals. But, that should be your number one task as it will give you a good foundation to build healthy habits. Exercise is also a big part. Do what you can an work at doing more. If you realize that you get out of this what you put into it, you will be on the right path. Change is a scary thing, but it can also lead to great things.

As Shel says, water water water. If the gym is too expensive, try the Y. I belong and it's alot less than the gyms in the area. I know I can't and don't have the right to tell you how to spend your money but this is immensly important for you. I have joint disease and even with new hips, the treadmill and bicycle are not the best option. Water however, helped me more than any physical therapy ever did. Take a look at my stats. I did that swimming laps and doing water aerobics.

Encouragement needed + How many oz per sitting week after RNY?
Alphabetize posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi everybody. Looking for some input and would really appreciate your help. I just had RNY on 4/25, so I'm 4 days post-op. Every day has been better than the day before but geeeeez the gas pain is worse than anything I've experienced with any surgery I've had before. I'm up walking every hour, stretching and getting massages from my husband, but the bubbles are stuck in my shoulders and under my ribs. Horrible, stabbing pain! I've been trying so hard to get the recommended Protein and liquids in, but it feels like a full-time job. My stomach feels like it's going to burst its so full when I've only had 2oz of Protein Drink. I'm trying to get 2oz/hour in, plus a SF Popsicle every few hours, but I can't imagine drinking much more. It's such an uncomfortable feeling all day every day, and then taking meds? Feels like they're huge and scrape all the way down. I'm a rule follower by nature and I'd like to follow the post-op rules, but is it the gas pain causing this horrible overly-restrictive feeling?? How much have 1-week-out RNY people here been able to drink? Please tell me drinking will become easier soon. Also, have felt so remorseful this week but am slowly coming out of that fog... just mostly scared to face this new reality. I'm 18lbs down since 4/11 (when I started pre-op diet), but need hope this super tight feeling will go away so I don't get dehydrated. Thanks everybody. ❤️ -
Have you ever gotten tired of eating the same thing over and over again?
her1981 replied to newstart38's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I made something tonight with cottage cheese. It doesn't have a name, but I used 1/2 a cup of low fat cottage cheese, 1 egg, italian seasonings, 1 oz of mozzarella and 1 oz parmesan. I baked it at 350 for 30 minutes. Tasted delicious. You could add marinara, but I'm not allowed tomato products. It made 2 meals for me. 165 calories each and 15 grams of Protein, 10g fat and 4 carbs. -
Hi BeBopp. If you aren't SURE, you probably should keep thinking about this. The band is wonderful, fabulous and incredible - however, it will only work if you are committed to working with it. For instance - the band keeps me from wolfing my food - but so far it hasn't stopped me from eating any particular food. Some folks can't eat bread, or french fries - but I can still eat it all. Can I eat a LOT of anything? You know, if I eat slowly enough and really concentrate, I CAN actually eat a pretty good amount of food. But notice that I have to concentrate and work at eating too much. Who the heck does that? Plus - after over 10 mos of eating much less - my idea of what A LOT means has changed significantly. A LOT of pizza used to mean 4-5 slices of pan/deep dish pie. Now, A LOT of pizza means 2 slices of thin crust. When I am good, the band helps me be VERY VERY good. When I am bad, the band keeps me from being Horrid. I live a pretty normal life, and eat pretty normal foods. When I do that, I don't lose much and I don't lose fast... but I do actually keep losing. When I focus on eating better, when I drag myself into the gym, I lose faster. So, I get to live a VERY normal life. I don't have to obsess every moment of every day to lose the weight. (Been there, done that!) I don't have to eat only parsley & pine nuts for 3 meals a day. I don't have to buy tasteless pre-packaged foods that I hate. I don't have to go to meetings everyweek and get harrangued if I haven't lost weight. All I have to do is eat Protein first, then veggies, then carbs if there is room... Drink as much Water as I can stand... and chew my food REALLY well. That's it. Nobody even notices that I am on any particular plan. I get to join in on company lunches and parties. If I want a cookie - I CAN have one without dire physical consequences. And still, I lose a few pounds a month. More if I am eating right and exercising. What more could anyone ask? As to Why you need to be SURE - The band won't stop chocolate. I have to consciously choose not to bathe in the stuff every day. Cause then I really wouldn't lose any weight. The band cannot stop Starbucks. God, I love those Carmel Macchiatos - but 400-500 calories at a whack does NOT help the weightloss process. I still have to choose when and if I will eat real ice cream, pudding or candy. I know that if I eat those things all the time, I will be right back where I was before. So, I choose to work with my band every time I eat lean chicken instead of chips and Queso. Be SURE before you get this done. It is surgery, there is healing involved and the pre-op and post-op liquid diet stuff sucks. If you can handle all of the above - if you are really ready to lose the weight and keep it off - then I think the band can work for you... or for anybody. Good luck in your deliberating.

How long until you felt like you could go back to work?
newyorklady20 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello! I have finally received my surgery date for 3/30, and I absolutely can't believe it. I am so scared, but I am also so excited and hopeful about the future. I am looking to make a plan for requesting time off of work, and I am wondering how long it really takes until people feel back to normal, or normal enough to start doing regular work again. I am a teacher who works in person, and my surgery will be happening over spring break, so that will be the first week. In the current environment, its good because we have the option to work remotely, so I am going to request to work remotely the week after break - doing google meet sessions with students for about 6 hours a day. For the following week, week 3, I was thinking I could come back to work in person as long as I'm not running/lifting or straining myself. Does that sound reasonable based on people's experiences? Did you feel like you had the energy to work remotely by week 2, and back in person by week 3? I know it all depends on how things are actually going, and I'll change the plan if I need to, but I Just need to make an initial plan to give to my admin. Thanks! -

I had VSG 3/25/19. I lost 15 pounds in first couple of weeks but not an ounce since. I am getting over 60g of protein, drinking my water and walking. Getting frustrated. Is this common?

My house smells like a pizzeria...I made the famous Ricotta Bake
genepha posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I finally made Shelly's famous Ricotta Bake (http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/2007/08/pureed-foods.html). Oh my! It is so delicious. I followed her basic recipe but used a pinch of oregano and a bit of chili pepper flakes instead of "italian seasonings". I reduced the amount of parmesan. I also added about 1/2 c. of spinach because I like it and I have anemia so I figured the extra iron and vegetable couldn't hurt! I put them into a regular size cupcake pan and it made 9 servings. Using MFP, I calculated the recipe as 66 calories per serving with 6 grams of protein. Mine had a bit higher carbs because I used spaghetti sauce from a jar. Next time, I'll make my own with tomatoes, garlic, onions and basil. I ate 1 serving for dinner and another for lunch today. Delicious!! -
Unflavored protein powder, just started full liquids, how do you use it?
Bufflehead replied to The Laughing Cat's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You can stir unflavored protein powder into lots of things: soup, broth, yogurt, and cottage cheese, for example. If you are allowed to eat things like mashed potatoes or oatmeal, you can use it there too. But keep the amounts small or it will taste funky. For example, I used a half of a scoop of the Syntrax Nectar in my chai tea (approx. 8 ounces of tea). Be careful mixing into anything hot -- you need to test it with a food thermometer and make sure it is under 140 degrees or the protein will denature and clump, which is truly nasty. I find it works best with things that have a pretty strong flavor of their own and which are more on the savory side than sweet.
