  1. I would be more concerned about getting enough protein than calories. Try eating 5-6 very small meals of protein. Add protein powder to non caloric drinks or broth. You could try cottage cheese, hummus, soft cheese, beans, tuna.
  2. Looking for some food advice/ideas to help me reach my 600-800 calories I should be getting 11 weeks post op. On a good day I'm around 500 calories. I'm at the point where I can have 2-3oz of protein but I struggle even getting 1.5 oz . So far today I had my protein shake for breakfast. 116 calories....for lunch...1 oz grilled chicken, 1 oz fresh mozzarella and half a small banana for a total of 144 calories. Not sure what to eat! Any advice would be greatly appreciated [emoji3]
  3. May I ask what you use this in specifically? Could it be added to a ready to drink Protein shake?
  4. Hello Everyone and Happy New Years!!! So I recently had the Sleeve done and things are going well, except I cannot tolerate any dairy products. ANY AT ALL. I am struggling to get the required amount of protein in. I’ve tried shakes, yogurts, silke yogurt and protien powders. I do not tolerate sweet tastes wel either. I need your help!!! Any suggestions on protein powders that are dairy free and sleeve friendly that are really tasteless. Please share any recommendations. Today my protein intake should increase and I have not even met he previous intake. HELP. THANKS IN ADVANCE.
  5. Celebrate has unflavored protein!
  6. You die. Lol, jk. Nothing happens as long as you get the same amount of Protein a normal person requires as an average for the long term. Protein now is better because it keeps you fuller longer and greatly helps your recovery. If you don't get all of it, which for some people is like 80-100g a day and is a really enormous amount, nothing really happens. I was self-pay and I decided to have surgery about 2 weeks before I was rolled into the OR, so I never got the whole speech about eating my weight in protein a day. I ate what I felt like eating, which in hindsight was not anywhere near the amount of protein I should have had. Now, when I want a snack, I try to opt for something that has at least some protein, but in the end I get about what the average person my age and weight is supposed to be having. So..short version. Nothing bad happens if you don't hit that huge goal everyday, but the closer you get, the better you will feel, the faster you will recover, and, at least in theory, the more likely you will be to lose weight.
  7. I used to be a classroom teacher but still work for a school system. Honestly, I find the handling of food and drink much easier then I'd thought. Since we never really got much time to eat anyhow, I'm perfectly fine with nursing a giant Protein drink all morning, then another in the afternoon. It's tough when the PTA brings goodies in, or the students bring you treats for one reason or another, but it's up to us what we actually eat. It seems like so many folks are jumping on the Protein shake bandwagon for Meal Replacements, (surgery or not) that I can't think of a single time where someone's asked me where my lunch was, or why I wasn't eating. Best of luck to you
  8. I followed my NUT and then saw my doctor 1 month post and he said to try to only eat 2 meals and if hungry in between eat veggies. I like his idea and I think he did it to help get the scale moving a bit better. I eat a Protein bar for breakfast, IF I am hungry, for breakfast. Small lunch and dinner. It works for me during the week. on the weekends I have a small breakfast ( couple of scrambled eggs) and a small dinner. I may eat a "snack" mid-day. I missed my veggies because of the protein first, veggies and then carb for meals the NUT said to follow.

    Fatty Liver

It is common, but ask if you can get a head start and start shrinking your liver ahead of time. If you follow the less rigorous preop diet (shake for meals 1&2, protein vegetables meal 3) for longer ahead of surgery, you can get a running start instead if being miserable all at once, My surgeon did not require preop diet, my liver was fine, he was comfortable either way but I put myself in one anyway. Just for like a week I think. As always consult your physician first. VSG2017 HW 249 SW 238 CW 167

    big trouble

One thing I saw on this board that really peaked my interest about the Protein Shakes is to buy sugar free instant Jello pudding in your favorite flavor and add a teaspoon of the dry powder to your plain old Protein shake for some great flavor - try it! it couldn't hurt! :tt1:

    Shakes, Shakes, And More Shakes!

My dietician has recommended Slim Fast 2X a day, and Premeir Protein Shake 3X a day for the preop. Originally she wanted me to use Medifast but I've had it before and I don't like the aftertaste. What are the ingredients to your shakes? They sound good.

Is my Nutritionist keeping me fat - Part 2

I would listen to the Bariatric Nutritionist advice about lower calories. The only way to loss body fat is to eat fewer calories than are burned. Get rid of all starchy carbs, and don't overload on protein.

    Okay, THAT was disgusting.

Cerrin, Right back atcha. The first time I saw your siggy, I thought, "The only way there's a skinny woman in me is if I accidentally sat on one at the ball park":confused: All, I have found the ultimate (for-now, for-me, your-mileage-may-vary) Protein Drink. Tastes just like a Smoothie-King pineapple/orange/coconut fruit smoothie. 3 months RNY post-op eating challenged????

Thanks so much for all the great insight and reassurance this what I'm experiencing is normal for 3 months post op. I'm trying to stay focused on protein as that's what the doctor stressed and even though my larges protein source is still shakes, I'm okay with that. I do tend to lean toward the fish, shrimp and scallops when I do try and eat real food so I'm feeling ya New Orleans RNY buddy. I can certainly relate to those of you that posted, "I get hungry but then done after two bites" that's exactly where I am right now. I seem to eat fresh fruit, mostly berries, very we'll but not so much on vegetables. Anyone got any good vegetable recipes I might try?
  16. Ok... So wow this has been such a transformation for me so far very happy with results so far and are seeing numbers on the scale I have NEVER seen that's great AWESOME actually never experienced such a thing before feels great but my BIGGEST upset is this nauseous feeling I get every morning... I take my acid blockers at night that helps with the burning but I feel empty like no food in my tummy at all I hate eating at this hour very early 5am/6am because all I want to do is go back to sleep and enjoy my morning easing into my Breakfast, it's like I have to eat something to feel better and if I pick the wrong (soft food) to consume like sweets (Protein drink, apple sauce, yogurt I get so nauseous and tummy starts going crazy wanting to vomit. So yes I am trying to stay away from the sweets as a coat for my tummy but choose more warm foods but wow I have to actually cook the food (not a fan of microwave food, would rather bake it taste better/boil/sear) and the microwave food I can handle cant eat right now at this stage. So Im like really now I have to have bfast when I don't even want to cook/eat ahhhhh just wanna sleep pls help thx. PREOP-357 SURGERY DAY 1/14 ----- 341 MONTH 1/20/14 ----- 323 2/24-----309

    Restriction time post recovery

I think it's possible that you would both be able to go back to work according to your plan, but I think your plan is pretty ambitious. If you go forward with it, I would say have a back-up plan for what you are going to do if it doesn't work out the way you envision. I was not ready to go back to work for two weeks, and I have a desk job. I was just too tired. And I had what most people would consider an easy recovery: no complications, able to get all my fluids and protein in from day one, up and walking 2 hours after surgery. It isn't so much the fear of hurting yourself after surgery as it is just not having the strength or energy to get through a day doing the sorts of things you describe. It might also be hard to keep sipping liquids throughout the day while working on things like putting a fence up and getting fields ready for planting. It might even be hard for you to go back to work as a teacher with just a week off (I couldn't have -- but you are probably younger and perhaps starting at a lighter weight than I did). I am not meaning to discourage you, I just do want you to think of back-up plans for what happens if you and/or your husband end up needing more than a week off and/or a couple of weeks of light duty.
  18. I'm 3.5 weeks post op and I have my first business trip tomorrow. Fortunately it's a 24 hr trip to DC (I live in Boston), and it's significantly shorter and time and distance as compared to my usual trips overseas. Nonetheless, I'm worried not about what I'll eat, but about STAMINA. I'm friggin' EXHAUSTED. DEPLETED. Just so, so tired. I'm getting Protein and liquids in, but I go to bed at 7:30 every night. I know I'm still healing but I just feel so tired. Since I can't bring my Protein shake through security, my plan is to drink on the way to the airport, get a Greek yogurt and big bottle of Water at the airport, nap on the plane, and I built in time for a nap before my work event tomorrow evening. Fingers crossed I can make it through this! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  19. Well here I am 6 days ot and feeling good. I had my op in Czech Rep (I live in UK) on 3rd April, I should have come home on 6th but I was feeling sick on day of travel so surgeon said No. He was so good though he ordered immediate xrays and bloods to make sure that there was no sleeve problem and everything came back OK. I felt much better on 7th and travelled home then. Since arriving home I have been feeling tired but OK. I am getting in my liquids (Phew) and getting my Protein by putting the Protein powder in greek yoghurt. One thing that is not brilliant is sleeping -I am not sleeping through and am waking 2 or 3 times per night which is adding to my feeling tired. Anyone else have this? So so far no real problems or regrets. Cathy
  20. I just wanted to give a quick update in case anyone is reading this thread with the same issues, and also to thank you all for your comments - they really helped. I'm not halfway through week 5 and, until yesterday I was struggling to get more than 200 calories a day. I've lost 32lbs in five weeks - so that's been amazing - but, for the first time in my life, I started to worry about malnutrition. My skin has started to show the effects of so little nutrients. Anyway, I had a bit of a breakthrough yesterday. My doctor had told me that as long as my calories were Protein, that was the most important thing. So I stuck to trying to eat eggs, chicken etc, and could manage about two tablespoons, or less, and I would start feeling so nauseous I had to stop. Anyway, yesterday I was feeling so ill that I decided I didn't care what I ate anymore as long as it had calories, and I bought a tuna mayonnaise sandwich on soft wholemeal bread, and some pate and bread. Turns out, I can eat these (without crust). I ate almost the whole sandwich! Amazing. Took me an hour, but whatever. Anyway, I think the carbs are helping the protein go down or something. Saying that, I tried Pasta a few days ago and that didn't work at all. But I feel like a different person today. So far, I'm at 200 calories for Breakfast and lunch - which doesn't sound a lot, but compared to the last few weeks, it's a huge change. I'm seeing the doctor for my follow-up on Monday, so I guess I'll find out more then. Thanks again for all your comments
  21. Not getting enough calories can affect your metabolism, dehydrate you, and make you feel fatigued or lack energy. I recommend that you check with your doctor as well to find out if there is a complication. I know at first I was scared to eat/drink too much because of the stomach only being able to hold 4 oz. However, on my first post-op visit, it was explained to me that liquid including the Protein drinks go straight through. It is the solids that our stomachs can only hold the 4 ounces. Since then, I have felt more comfortable drinking liquids throughout the day (always 30 minutes after eating), and I have been able to get in at least the 64 oz of liquids if not more. Also, at my doctor's office, they gave us a timeline for eating the 3 meals/2 Snacks (protein drinks) throughout the day.
  22. My dad had his WLS 4 weeks ago and as I preceded him two months earlier he usually comes to me first with his questions. My doc told me that 1000 cals daily is a good amount to have and to shoot for 80 g of protein ( which I have no prob getting). My Dad is wondering what the typical amount of calories per day is for the men who have had this surgery. So far he is doing very well but I am sure he is still at the point where he is eating much fewer calories than he will once his stomach is healed up.
  23. Could be a stomach bug. other causes of vomiting could be dumping (eating things with high sugar content...lay off the fruit and see if it makes a difference). My Protein shakes make me dump if I drink them too fast. I have a friend who said she didn't dump...but was having regular vomiting episodes. Guess what. That was how she dumped as they usually happened after eating a high carb item. I get sweaty and nauseous and dizzy and feel gross but don't vomit or have other gastro symptoms. other causes could be a stricture. I would call the doctor's office and see if they can help narrow it down.
  24. Hi everyone, I'm very new here (first post).. I had been meaning to find a good forum for support/info, but hadn't gotten around to it yet. Now I am really needing advice, and it's of course Christmas so I can't reach out to my surgical team. I had RXY two weeks ago tomorrow, my recovery has been totally great to this point, a breeze. But as of about 3am yesterday I've been having bouts of "vomiting" every 4-5 hours. However, when I vomit, absolutely nothing is coming up. Not a morsel of food (and yes I was eating bits of things throughout the day--watermelon, a few banana slices, 2 T of mashed potato) or liquid, nor even any kind of stomach juices or bile. Normally, even if your stomach is totally empty and you're dry heaving, you at least get some of that super gross, yellow stomach acid. In every other respect, my vomiting episodes are normal, with the heaving and retching, and muscles seizing up. But I literally just get the pre-pukinh saliva in my mouth that I spit out. I feel fine in between these bouts of vomiting, until about 5 minutes before when I know it's coming. I may have a fever, but can't find my thermometer. Now, at this point I will add that three days prior to my getting ill, my mother has what she says is the same thing. 24 hours of vomiting with nothing coming up, no stomach acid, no food or liquid. (Incidentally she also had a gastric bypass 8 years ago.) My last instance of "throwing up" was around 3:30am this morning, so not sure if it's going to happen again. I had a few sips of Protein drink, and lots of Water so far today. May or may not be related, but I do feel constipated, and my last BM was diarrhea about three days ago. SO. I'm not sure if this is just a normal, poorly-timed case of a contagious stomach bug. It seems weird that I have not vomited up ANYTHING at all at any time though. Or, is there something wrong with my stomach? A fistula? A leak? I haven't had any abdominal pain to speak of. I also worry that if it IS just a stomach bug, all the vomiting may do some kind of damage inside as well. Does anyone have any thoughts for me, or any similar experiences? I would be really grateful for any ideas or words of wisdom. It's terrible timing, since it's a holiday weekend and I can't reach my surgeon's office or the program RN. All I could do would be to go into Emergency... I just don't know. Hannah in Oregon
  25. I've tried everything and it's all making me sick! Protein shakes, protein gels, Greek yogurt, milk, peanut butter, eggs???? it's all so nasty! I don't know how I'm going to do this!
