  1. I drank chicken bone broth as a protein source when I was still on clear liquids, but if you can also have protein shakes you must be allowed "full liquids". My "meals" weren't my main source of protein at all, they were just to start getting my body used to 3 meals per day...the whole goal those first few weeks its staying hydrated because dehydration can get you off track for healing. My "full liquids" meals were 3 TBS of creamy tomato soup, 3 TBS of greek yogurt, or 3 TBS of cream of wheat. The rest of the day I was sipping water or Fairlife milk. As for homemade shakes, it matters what you put in them, if I had to guess those homemade shakes may have stuff in there (other than the protein powder/water/milk) that your stomach may not tolerate yet like raw veggies (spinach leaves), raw fruit (strawberries, bananas), etc. You can have protein shakes made with water, milk, protein powder and/or greek yogurt, but in your first couple weeks, there really isn't any other options. Check your recipes with your dietitian or doctor.

    No cooking!!!

I'm not single, but my husband & I now eat different foods, so for me, its like cooking for one. I keep some "convenience" go-to foods at home: canned chicken, refried beans, canned tuna, tuna pouches, canned green beans. I also take advantage of some of the things my husband cooks and eat my tiny serving of it like his marinara meat sauce for pasta (made from a jar, not homemade), and taco meat when he makes tacos. Then I take my size portion and mix in things like ricotta cheese, or top off with finely shredded cheese. I do the same with the convenience foods. So technically, I'm not cooking with those convenience foods....canned chicken and refried beans are definitely my two main go-to foods though. I'm in stage 3, which is soft foods, if you are still in the liquid stages I'd go for protein shakes, Fairlife milk, chicken broth, etc.....can't really get stuff like that at a restaurant. I have been to ONE restaurant so far, last week, (week 7 after surgery). I ordered an ahi tuna appetizer plate with everything except the wonton crisps. So I had 6 or 7 little pieces of ahi tuna with the spicy mayo and soy sauce drizzled over them, oh and a few little pieces of avocado, it was heavenly. I also ate a few pieces of roasted cauliflower from another table-shared appetizer and one piece of shrimp from a shared appetizer. It was parmesan crusted shrimp but I peeled off most of the crust. I think a good way to manage eating out is to share food with someone or expect to have leftovers. If I share with my husband he knows he gets like 90% of what's on the plate, so he doesn't care. Also, go to nice restaurants like what Arabesque was saying - they use better ingredients and more care in their cooking, PLUS they usually will cater to special requests (like no wonton crisps with my ahi tuna appetizer). When I asked the waitress about different food options I saw on the menu she literally told me "If you see it on the menu, we can make it any way you want", which is the bonus of the nicer restaurants.

    2 Months Post Op Food

It was a decent alternative, I didn't particularly care for how easy they break but it was a nice alternative. The cool ranch ones are pretty good too. In addition to the original post, I can't help with an overabundance of meals but I do eat a slice of keto bread with PB2 every morning. 7g of protein, 1.5 fat 0 sugars. Quick and easy I'm pretty basic with most of my meals. When I have a sweet tooth I usually cut an apple and coat it with cinnamon and pop it in the oven at 400 for 15-20 min.

    2 Months Post Op Food

Oh that sounds super yummy! I haven't bought any foods that are made with protein instead of carbs to replace the carby ones. A lot of people have talked about Quest chips though, maybe I should get some!

    2 Months Post Op Food

I did walking tacos the other night with the tortilla-style quest chips... 19g of protein for the whole bag (individual serving ), and I was able to eat about 4 but any added protein is always nice.

    No cooking!!!

I am not sure how easy it will be in the early stages. Takeout from a restaurant certainly, but dining out would be more difficult just because of how long it takes to eat and needing to measure things plus your actual restrictions of what you can eat. Plus if you do find something that doesn’t agree with you it’s better to be at home. Once you get used to what your portions should and are able to tolorate most things though you should be able to eat out without too much issue. I’m not sure you would want to eat out most meals though just because there are so few truly healthy options. Many people who don’t love to cook will cook a few meals one day a week or so and freeze portions though. Perhaps that’s something to consider. That would definitely be a healthier alternative to how most restaurants typically prepare their food. Or like arabesque suggested a home delivery service cuts out most of the prep work. Maybe that’s something you want to consider some days.

    Nervous on vacation!!!! Help!!!

Yea I remembered that from another post of yours. You should be able to find Gatorade there if you have an issue sneaking in the peanuts but I say if your gonna have calories it may as well be protein if it can.

    August surgery buddies!

Good morning from scorching hot San Diego! 360.0 now! That's exactly 25 pounds from when I started the liver-shrinking diet 2 weeks pre-op. All seems to be going well, but I didn't quite hit my protein goal yesterday with 3 outings adding up to 6 hours of errands (note to self: grab a protein shake on the way out the door). Still learning. However, that was the only day, so I'm quite proud of hitting my protein and water goals every other day. My activity is really good as well, says my Apple Watch. It's largely thanks to all the work packing/culling/donating for the move as well as errands. Later this morning, the surgeon will call me for a follow-up. The nutritionist was supposed to call yesterday at 9:30 a.m., but she was a no-show with still no word, so I'll reach out to her by e-mail. I got an awesome shipment from BariatricPal store yesterday. They're going to come in really handy on my 5- to 6-day road trip. I don't know how I'll refreeze the ice pack though, but I can probably at least get it really cold in a motel bucket full of ice.

    September surgery buddies!!

Today is only day 3 of my liquid diet but so far it's going well. These protein drinks are actually keeping me full and I'm not really hungry. I've now tried 6 different flavors of premier protein shakes and my favorite by far is the chocolate peanut butter one. I can't taste the protein and its like having a treat. This week I drink 2 shakes a day so I have one shake for breakfast and then I save my second one for an after dinner desert. I have broth for lunch but so far that has not been very enjoyable. I've tried 3 different broths and they are ok, but I don't like salt and they all seem salty to me and its a struggle to even drink one cup of it. I have a few more flavors to try so hopefully at least one of them will be ok. What I have tried is Millie's sipping broth the taco soup and Thai lemon grass flavors. Both have tons of flavor to them so no complaints there. The lemon grass was the better one but I still struggled with both and I think its because of the salt. Then I tried making and straining a can of vegetable beef soup and I added extra water to thin it out in hopes of less salt and that was ok, but still hard. So I guess I need to buy and try some low salt varieties or go through the effort to make my own. I also found out that I love the flavors of the cheap walmart jello cups (Winky Sugar Free Gelatin) but my favorite the black cherry flavor really upsets my stomach which makes me sad. Any suggestions for a low salt broth would be appreciated
  10. I thought I was dealing with reactive hypoglycemia and so did my surgeon's NP. However, my rockstar dietitian took a chunk of time with me to really tease things apart. She wasn't 100% convinced it was hypoglycemia and agreed with my purchase of a cheap glucose meter. Her guess was that it was dumping syndrome, but delayed because I was going to bed after eating the triggering food and waking up due to the symptoms. 2 nights ago I purposefully ate a triggering food without eating any protein. Sure enough I woke up drenched in sweat and feeling horrible.... blood sugar was 100 so not hypoglycemia. So yeah, dumping syndrome.... Then last night I wasn't thinking and ate some high fat and high carb food right before I headed into work and oh my...... Work was difficult last night and had to sit down quite a bit (I do after hours janitorial work). I'm thinking the symptoms I thought was hypoglycemia is really due to low blood pressure. The pain of the muscle cramps is very real and wore me out. It's 12 hours later and I'm still sore. I really need to change my diet, AGAIN. uggggg..... On a much more positive note, the reason I had the revision has been fully resolved, no more dangerous reflux and no more esophageal spasms due to the reflux. The reflux was so bad it was starting to create pre-cancerous changes in my esophagus. I'll be having another endoscopy in a month or two to confirm how much healing has taken place. My team and I are absolutely thrilled with the additional 30 pounds of weight loss. If I loose more, great, but I'm 100% happy with where I'm at right now. I'm probably the healthiest I've been in my whole life. It's been close to 30 years since I've been in the low 160s (and I'm only 44). I'm comfortably in size 8 pants and M shirts, my dream sizes when I started this whole journey 8+ years ago.

You can search menus for the park before you go so you know which restaurants have the more nutritious options. I read that you can substitute fruit for fries in most places in the park and of course you can ask them to cook your entree without butter. Then the obvious of eating without the bread and limiting the sauces, etc. In cases like that I usually just splurge a little on the meal and then eat veggies for my snack to sorta balance it out. You could also carry a Fanny pack (I decided they are acceptable fashion for a place like disney) with a protein shake and you can get a glass of ice anywhere. In October it depends on the day but it could be so hot you will be glad to not have a big meal weighing you down.
  12. look at enjoying appetizers or side salads - some places will also allow people kids meals! or look at the a la carte options; instead of a meal a meat and one side or just a side may suit you. most importantly enjoy yourself!!!!

    No cooking!!!

Yes I eat out with friends and family about once a month. I have had some bad meals that I thought were good choices. I find it to be like expensive russian roulette. I have been so ill with the simplest looking choices. I am unable to eat sweet or greasy foods. I have found a Thai restaurant that suits me well, so its a nice treat now and again My favourite no cook summer food at the moment is - a slice of very crisply toasted seeded bread with smashed avocado and 100 gms of cooked prawns. This gives me 25 + grams of protein as well as only 350 cals win win

    Beware The Coffee Creamer Pipeline

So I did try protein shake in my coffee when I was fresh off the OR table. Well, more like 2 weeks after. But yeah, it tasted so horrible. But I see now that I shouldn't use only a few table spoons of protein shake as if it was traditional creamer. I need to treat it like a latte. Mostly shake with the rest coffee. No wonders lol.

    No cooking!!!

First I love to cook. I cook almost everything I eat & I’m single. I have total control over the ingredients, how it’s cooked, the nutritional content & I freeze the leftovers for the days I don’t feel like cooking, am home late, etc. Often call the freezer my local takeaway - can have a nutritious meal ready to eat in 5 minutes. Secondly, yes you can dine out but it isn’t all that easy at first after surgery when you are restricted on what you’re allowed to eat, what you are able to tolerate, portion size restrictions, nutritional needs, etc. I do dine out regularly. Not much in my first year though. I don’t go to chain type ‘restaurants’ (they’re not as prevalent in Australia thank goodness), never fast food & rarely takeaway (maybe once or twice a year). I go to real restaurants where all the food is cooked fresh from scratch - not mass produced food, full of preservatives & other additives, that’s shipped in bulk & just cooked at many chain ‘restaurant’. But this has been my choice. A few have posted about using home delivery meals. May be that is a better option???
  16. That Collagen protein come bone broth. Idk I was told it does count. And certainly better than no protein at all. What I can from the forum everyone’s doctors are different in how they do things or requirements.
  17. Collagen & peptide supplements don’t count towards our protein goal as they’re not a complete protein - lack most of the essential amino acids we need. It may help with your skin, connective tissues so yiu could take it fir those benefits but that’s it.
  18. You could tried the Vital Peptides. It has 20 grams in protein, it’s unflavored. I only mix with room temp water and I add a propel mix to it. Or just mix it with propel water, or something. Talk to your nutritionist. My surgery is 10-4-22, but after surgery I am all liquids for first 2 weeks. So I am not sure what your drs is saying or wanting. My nutritionist advised me that All fluids (shakes etc) go towards my liquid intake.

    Beware The Coffee Creamer Pipeline

Also, hi fellow ADHDer! I drink an insane amount of coffee/caffeine daily, although, I’ve cut down recently because it was making me sleepy instead of helping me focus. Also, which kind of cup are we taking? The right or left because the left is actually about 2.5 standard cups of coffee. I drink one (or 2 if I’m working) of those a day about half filled with coffee and then the rest is a protein shake.

    Beware The Coffee Creamer Pipeline

I second this! Ones I’ve found work great are premier protein, equate (Walmart brand), muscle milk zero (NOT the regular ones!), Atkins brand, and quest. I find the plant based ones in coffee tend to be kind of gritty and some other brands (I’m looking at you regular muscle milk!) actually clump when poured in hot coffee.
  21. Here is my basic list of supplies post-op surgery that I have pulled together from different folks: Thermometer Oxygen pulse oximeter Pain meds Amit nausea meds and alcohol swabs/pads Gasx Puffer for acid reflux Protein shake Protein water - find measuring cups for 2oz Miralax with water premixed Patch aids - multivitamins with iron, biotin, vitamin D3, b12+ Throat lozenges Gastric sleeve notebook logging amount of drinking Nioxin shampoo or tail and mane shampoo with horse on front Dissolvable Tylenol
  22. I always feel sad about wasting food whenever we go to a restaurant. Some of the restaurants over here have an option for "kids meal" which is usually half of the adult portion. I always order that whenever I go out with my family. It comes with a toy too 😂. Congratulation on loosing 100 lbs.
  23. Thank you! Surgeon said it went beautifully. He said I must have followed his directions to the letter because the liver was perfect. I don’t understand why some have a two week liquid diet and others a two day diet. Anyway… The first ten hours or so of the gas pain was awful there was no way to turn for relief. It was in my shoulders and neck and truly unbearable. Then I started the walking and it very quickly started working its way out. I ended up staying in hospital until yesterday. The nausea has been brutal. It would come in huge waves. I was able to get up and walk fine and the pain was next to nothing except when you twist or use core muscles to try to sit up. That one large incision can cause a great deal of pain. It’s like a tearing feeling if you aren’t careful. I am doing fine with hydrating with water. Not so well with broth and protein. But…better today than yesterday. The nausea is much better today. I have slept a lot. I got up and showered on my own and overall feel much better. None of this is pleasant. There are some moments that you think will never end, but it’s doable and I am not sorry.

I really love them. They do have a protein taste.

    July 2022 peeps!

How was everyone's Labor Day Weekend? Last weekend through this weekend I actually started doing things with people outside of my home where I was away from home long enough I needed to bring food with me. So far two of my outings were at my friends' homes so it was easy for me to warm up my food. One friend was making kabobs and I had a sliced up grilled mushroom, it was HEAVEN. I've decided that when people get together for bonfires/drinks that drinking Protein 2 O has really worked well for me, I get a big drink to sip and it makes me feel full. Then, I can just enjoy my friends and conversation. I'm down another few pounds since my first post with you guys, which is about right. 8 weeks post surgery and next week I get to have "easy to chew" foods! I think other plans call that soft foods! I'm pumped. I've actually been getting more adventurous with my foods - tried some cottage cheese with a few blueberries last night. I'm also eating cooked green beans as a "side". I still eat pretty small portions, sticking to my 1/4c which is the amount I'm supposed to eat while I'm in this "mashed foods" stage, which lasts a whole month, but like I said before - its almost over!! Next week - easy to chew foods, yay! Oh! I also ate at a restaurant last week, that was a huge deal for me. I ate an appetizer portion of ahi tuna (without the wonton crisps), I got all the flavor of the spicy mayo and the soy sauce, which made it super tasty. I also ate some roasted cauliflower (like 3 bites) and a parmesan crusted shrimp (I removed most of the crust), it was so good! Now that I've eaten outside of my home, in a restaurant and at friends' homes, I feel a bit more confident and less anxious than I have since surgery, I've been so anxious about fitting in when I can't really eat anymore. I don't have gluttonous friends that are food pushers or anything like that though. I'm hungry a lot and its not mental hunger its true hunger - I think its because I'm so scared of accidentally eating to much and making myself sick. I absolutely hate throwing up and I'll do anything to avoid it! I did push past that and have 1/2 c of cottage cheese instead of just a 1/4 c yesterday and my tummy liked it! Thanks for sharing all your stories and experiences, keep sharing!!
