September surgery buddies!!
ShoppGirl replied to Slwhurst's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I like the premiere protein caffe latte but it has caffeine (not sure if your plan allows that or not). I have never tried the meal replacement ones but if they say they keep you full longer I would definitely stick with those. When you are allowed caffeine though if you like coffee drinks such as iced coffee, try the caffe latte. It’s yummy. Even my never been obese aunt that can have anything is hooked on them. I got her to try them instead of her iced coffee and she loves them. -

I knew what you meant. I was just referring to my post op liquid diet because that’s the only liquid only diet I had. Pre op I was allowed SOME food. But my hunger hormones are back now and that protein shake still keeps me full for a good 4-5 hours till lunch every day. My husband takes them to work now to have on days where he doesn’t have time to eat lunch or if he is working outside and it’s too hot to eat. -

You may be surprised that you aren’t as hungry as you think. The protein in the shake should fill you up for quite a while. I am a year and a half out and I still have a protein shake every morning and it fills me up until lunch. I do this by choice and obviously wouldn’t if I was hungry. Now protein does nothing for head hunger though. Are you allowed sugar free popsicles or jello? Those helped me to feel like I was actually chewing something which I missed during my post op liquid diet -

I’ve put just a can of peaches in the freezer and it made a fantastic sorbet! The creami is so versatile! Here is my recipe for protein shake ice cream: 1 chocolate fairlife shake 1 tbsp light cream cheese 1 tbsp sugar free chocolate pudding powder mix 2 tbsp pb fit 1/2 cup milk- any (I add a packet of sweet n low) I blend that then put it in the container and freeze. I spin on light ice cream, then I add about 2-3 tbsp of milk right on the top and hit respin, you can respin again if you want it very creamy. This recipe to me tastes like a frosty.

How to manage menstrual pain post surgery?
ShoppGirl replied to Aliana Wood's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i have an annual exam in October with my family doc. I will definitely bring it up then. I am glad to know that there are non narcotic options now. I wasn’t ever told about those after my accident and I’m surprised because I was afraid to take narcotics. I had no choice because I was in a great deal of pain but I was reluctant and made that known to the doctors. -
That's great. Congrats! I'm 30 days past surgery and still feel kind of weak. I get winded from walking and I fall asleep most afternoons after work. I am getting closer to my protein goals, although my weight has stalled now for almost two weeks. I'm not sure I'm glad I had this surgery.

Weirdest None-Scale-Victory - I'll go first

I was in Costco the other day. I don't know if this counts as a NSV but it was interesting to me. They had protein powder on sale and I was looking at it and it was a different version of my usual brand (Orgain) but way cheaper and I said "I wonder how this one tastes" to my husband. Another lady told me they had samples and we got to talking and I said I usually use this brand but a different version and then she was asking me questions about it and I was giving her advice on where I get the other version, how I use it, etc. I just think it's funny that someone would talk to me about nutrition without batting an eye, not knowing that I ever weighed almost 400 pounds. It feels good but at the same time weird, because I actually was just as into health and nutrition then, I just never could eat small enough portions. I could have given the same advice 2 years ago, but no one would have asked me or believed I could know anything. Now, I look the part. I'm glad people aren't able to look at me and assume all the bad things they probably did before I lost weight, but it's sad too. I'm the same person. Ooh I almost forgot on of my favorite “no cook” recipes is quiche. They have one made with egg whites at Walmart deli that is 300 calories. If that fits your stage and calorie budget you can slice it and heat up one piece or more at a time. I like it crispy so I like to do it one piece at a time. Just bake it for 28 minutes. I always have one in my fridge for last minute lunch or dinner plans. Also Panera has half salads on Their kids menu which also gives you the option to get yogurt instead of bread or chips. When you can tolerate lettuce. I like to take it to go or bring my own dressing with me though cause most of their dressing's are pretty high calories.

Hey all - I guess I'm 8 weeks post-op. I haven't been on in a while, so I thought I'd check in. I have now lost 38 lbs since surgery. When I include the 3-4 months pre-op, I've lost a total of 66 lbs, which puts me at the halfway point to my goal weight of 185. I've thrown the menu out. Okay, I exaggerated. I still have the menu--somewhere, but can't remember when I looked at it last. I am eating right, avoiding breads, carbs, sugars, fat, etc. I still log my food daily. I take my vitamins, watch calories, and make sure to get 90 grams of protein and 64 oz of fluids. The only complaint I have at this time is recurring heartburn, which I have been taking care of with some Alka-seltzer chews. I think I'm going to try some over the counter Nexium next. Hope all of you July Peeps are doing awesome!

How to manage menstrual pain post surgery?
Aliana Wood posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wondering how other people manage period pain after surgery. Before surgery, I would use iBuprofen and that worked perfectly. I would take a couple and it would completely get rid of my pain. Cramps, back aches, discomfort. All gone. Now, after surgery, I'm not allowed to take it anymore, so I tried Tylenol and it simply doesn't work as well for me when it comes to managing period pain. Are there any other options?- 20 replies

Surgery was a success Tuesday afternoon! Spent the night at the hospital and that felt a little rough. They offered me broth and water, but every time I tried either I'd get nauseous. I only slept 2hrs at a time bc I kept having to pee and I couldn't get comfortable in the hospital bed. Luckily I was able to go home Wednesday late morning. People were texting me and I couldn't concentrate on even holding my phone because my body felt weird. Being home feels better. I'm very independent, and I had my aunt and a cousin doting on me and asking to help, which felt wrong to me lol. But my bed at home is bigger than the hospital bed and doesn't do that inflatable thing the hospital one does for bed sores. Getting comfy is still difficult, and I'm a side or tummy sleeper so it once I got home to a million pillows I tried my sides. Left at first was a no go, I assume that's the side where my stomach is sutured. Right side felt better and it took like 4 long naps in-between using the bathroom and returning text messages. I'm not sure if it's gas pain in my neck and shoulders, or from being stretched out weird during surgery, but my neck and shoulders are very tight. When I was in the operating room before anesthesia knocked me out, they had both my arms extended to the side and where strapping them down. I have a rotator cuff problem that comes and goes and it feels like it's back, which is why I think it's from being stretched weird. But I kept walking around my room to try to get rid of it if it was gas. I actually watched the first half of the fellowship of the ring while pacing around, so that's at least an hour lmao. Chewed two gasx tablets. Eating also is a little weird. At my hospital breakfast I was able to get down a little cream of chicken and water, and didn't fell nauseous, but I couldn't tell if I was feeling hunger pains or full pains. When I got home I had some protein water, then after a couple of naps I very slowly ate 2oz of jello. I had some bone broth with added protein powder for dinner, but not a lot because it made me nauseous, I'll try tomorrow without adding extra protein and see if that changes anything. I took a disolvable anti nausea but honestly that made it worse. It's almost 5am here in SoCal, not sure what woke me up but at least I'm with it enough to type out this long report hahah. -

My dad always use to tell me history quotes growing up. The one that comes to mind for this is “Failing to plan is a plan to fail.” Personally, when I don’t have structured meal plans I go off the walls and end up just eating junk or protein bars and shakes all day (more junk). -

I’ve bought premier protein vanilla and add a teaspoon of my extract flavors…. My favorite is almond. On Amazon you can find almost any flavor imaginable. I’m on day nine of full liquid… three shakes and some sf jello, pudding, or low sodium tomato juice. Add some of those extracts to your water too. Keep strong you got this -
Dizziness and fainting 10 weeks post op
catwoman7 replied to Ryan Witner's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had an issue with that about a year after WLS. They checked several things because they said there could be any number of reasons - low blood pressure, reactive hypoglycemia, inner ear imbalance, or even at UTI! They didn't find anything, but my PCP suspects it was probably glucose-related, and my glucose level just happened to be normal during the work up. So she suggested I eat something every three hours - preferably a protein. I haven't had that issue since, so that might have been it - or at least it was for me. I know a lot of people experience that because of low blood pressure, though - that seems to be the most common culprint. hope they figure yours out!! -

Oh no! sorry to hear that. I'm kind of expecting the same thing, so I laid in a supply of bone broth and unflavored protein powder, as well as bariatric pal soups and hot chocolate. Hopefully the variety will keep me going. 2 weeks on a liquid diet is a long time. -
I am scheduled for the VSG procedure on October 12th. So far I have stopped drinking carbonated drinks and alcohol. I also make sure to eat my protein first and making a lot of protein based meals. I try to walk 30 minutes daily and cut back on sweets.

So per suggestions of people who have already had the procedure done they say the creami is a great purchase. I got one on sale yesterday so looking for ideas and recipes people have tried and liked. It definitely seems like a good way to make yucky protein drinks more painful to consume if they are made into ice cream.

October 4th here. Getting the sleeve done. Have been waiting since July 2021 for it to get scheduled. Less than 4 weeks away, im starting to get nervous. I thought I had plenty of protein but now that I've gotten my full instructions I only have like 2/3 of what I'll need just for the 2 weeks before and the 2 weeks after. I wish they had been more upfront with how much we would need I would have started hoarding it a lot sooner. Otherwise I think im about ready, have lots of water and zero Gatorade for me and food and litter for the kitties. I feel like im never going to be totally ready in the time I have left.

Dizziness and fainting 10 weeks post op
SpartanMaker replied to Ryan Witner's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Could be dumping syndrome, especially because you ate something you know you shouldn't have. Everyone reacts differently and the foods that trigger it can vary. The other option may be orthostatic hypotension. This is really common in bariatric surgery patients. It happens because you used to have a massive blood volume to carry blood to all that fat. As you lost weight, your overall blood volume also went down because you didn't need that much any more. The problem is that your veins and arteries don't shrink as quickly as the blood volume dropped, so now you have less blood, in a still large container. That equals lower blood pressure in general, but it's especially bad when standing from a sitting position. Your blood can rush to your legs and that causes a corresponding loss of blood in your head. That can cause dizziness and fainting. For most people, this will go away in time as your veins and arteries shrink, but it could take a few months. In the interim, some strategies you can use would be increasing your salt intake and the use of compression stockings. As always, don't take the work of some rando on the internet (me). Talk to your surgical team and get it checked out. -

My plan has me on a modified regular diet after a month. I get about 60 grams of protein in me a day even though sometimes it's hard and normally at least 64 fluid oz of water. I mainly eat chicken and salmon for most of my meals and kinda just splurged last night bevause ive been feeling fine lately before last night. But there are quite a few times where i get dizzy when standing up or bending over Sent from my Pixel 3 using BariatricPal mobile app -

What phase of food are you in, 10 weeks post-op, seems like you can have soft foods but not regular foods yet. My guess is that you didn't get enough protein in your day and eating cheese sauce and fries for dinner was the straw that broke the camel's back. Also, it could be that you aren't hydrated enough either. Those two things not hydrated enough and/or not eating enough protein can kick your body's butt! Find out your daily protein goal from your doctor or dietitian and also get at least 64 ozs of clear liquids daily (this can include protein shakes and milk, too). You have been losing weight really fast, 65 lbs post-op in 10 weeks? I know men lose faster, but that is pretty insane! My instincts are telling me that you haven't been getting enough nutrition for awhile now, protein is so super important! Also, remember we had bariatric surgery to improve our health and having some fries and cheese sauce can just tempt you to eat other less healthy, low protein stuff. Good work on your loss so far, but you gotta be alive to enjoy it! Pump up that protein and water! -
I'm not sure where you are weeks past surgery, but it sounds like maybe you've graduated past pureed foods and into the next phase where you can eat what my doctor calls "mashed foods". It sounds like you aren't in a phase where you can have something as solid & dry as a cracker. Please take care of yourself so you don't hurt your esophagus and tummy! That being said, sh*t happens and all we can do is admit we messed up and then move on and make better choices! You can do this, I can tell you want to do this, butternut squash for lunch and dinner, GO GIRL! Also, the fact that you had mashed potato and a ravioli means you added some carbs to your diet and your brain went WHOA! CARBS! LOVE THOSE! When, that happens, its harder to resist a craving for MORE carbs. Stick with things that are high protein and low carb and you'll feel so much better and have less cravings!
