Hi All, So I've found a surgeon I like and with the gastric sleeve, he's had no deaths and no complications. None? Well, that's what he tells me. Over the last 12 months, he's done 60 of these surgeries. He does more bands and a lot more bypasses. He's been doing these surgeries for about 5 years, so I'm trying to decide, is 60 surgeries a year enough for him to be good? How many sleeve procedures have your surgeons done? I don't want a newbie! Thanks!

Physiological Changes After WLS
summerset replied to IveGotThePower's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Very interesting, thank you. I'm a revision from band to MGB because of reflux issues and a migrating band and I have to say it is very different now! Wish I had done this way, way, WAY sooner! (I was afraid of having surgery again. Should have done it sooner but it's always easy to say that after everything went ok.) I wonder how it will feel after being 2, 3, 7 years out. Definitely worth a quote. -
Did you have to wait for revision after band removal?
deletedelete posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am just curious how many people had to wait to have their VSG revision done during a second operation. I am worried that once the surgeon gets "in there" it will be an "ut oh" situation where I will have to have revision done at a later time. I am self pay... so that would really not bode well. -
Totally tell your nutritionist. She/he can help figure out what foods you could eat instead of what you are eating. You know, "instead of bacon, how about..." Does your weight loss program also have a therapist on staff? Maybe you could visit with the therapist as well, to help determine why you are trying some of these foods. (Sort of a self-sabotaging thing..) Granted, part of the "why" is probably just to see if you can. Us "sleevers" really aren't as limited as someone who has had the gastric bypass. I don't "dump" nor do I "slime". It's up to me to really make the best decisions.

VSG revision to Gastric Bypass
SleeveandRNYchica replied to staceymaelofton's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am in the same process. My sleeve dilated during pregnancy (I was not overheating) it was a difficult pregnancy. The weight I gained I have not lost and my gerd is horrible. So I went in for a the upper gi and barium swallow a few weeks ago and he determined that I have severe gerd and a dialated sleeve, which he says he has seen in several post pregnancy sleeves. I am scheduled for an endoscopy the end of May. In the meantime, they are contacting my insurance regarding revision. I have BCBS Federal, I am not sure if I will have to go through all the requirements again. So just waiting. Good luck to u. -
Sorry about the unpleasant topic but was wondering if anyone experienced diarrhoea and lots of gas from the bowel 2 days post op? I’m literally going to the toilet every half an hour with either wind or upset tummy. Is this normal?

Question regarding 7 weeks post op
LSF replied to marbelvsg's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had the lapband in 2008 and just had it removed on 2/4 and had the sleeve done at the same time. From all the posts I've been reading, those that have had the "revision" surgery are not losing as fast as those that are having the sleeve. But I also had an easier time adjusting because I had been through it before with the band -
I had bypass surgery in June 2010... until March 2015 everything was well and I kept what I had lost. Since then I have been gaining weight and so far I have gained a little over half of what I first lost. Pleaseeeeee help me get down again, anyone has a good diet or something that can help me. Has anyone had the same problem?? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Drinking ALL THE THINGS? Tips on scheduling
lisacaron replied to Tootles1975's topic in Pre-op Diets and Questions
@@Tootles1975 your not far off in your last statement "it seems like a good practice to put in place because I believe you are supposed to stick to that after surgery" That is exactly why your doctor is telling you to do what they are telling you to do. Your profile says Gastric Bypass, now from what I know from reading (please bypass friends and Veterans jump in here) you may not be able to drink Water again after a shake for 30 minutes or more after your surgery. You may not want to be drinking hot or cold beverages or Soups and ices after your surgery. So your doctors are giving you a "taste" of what is to come. If you can't wrap your mind around it now...what will happen after? This is your learning curve friend use it wisely!! Ask your doctors why and if they explain along those terms, it's in your best interest and long term success to follow what they advise. Best of luck to you, let us know how it goes!! -
In my opinion, you don't just need a VSG surgeon, you need a surgeon who has done a significant number of revisions. I know my surgeon has done a number of revisions but he is in Mexico and you would have to self-pay. Maybe search the Band to Sleeve Revision forum for names?

trying to change
ReadyForChange8 replied to ReadyForChange8's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
thanks for your replys, this site is really cool bc a lot of people in here can relate. Im so scared bc of the ins just denying me, but my mom tells me to think positive, she had gastric bypass and bc of the muscle disease they just approved her. So i dont know im just so ready to not be fat anymore i hate it. Its just that nobody has ever heard of the muscle disease before so it sucks trying to tell my dr about it when he doesnt even now about. The dr that find it in my mom has already past away so i cant go to him  -
Hello! I'm about 2.5 months out from band to sleeve revision. I'm down 13 pounds since surgery. I'm very pleased!! I'm exercising daily - mainly walking/hiking outside with my dog or on the elliptical at the gym. I'm starting a "personal fitness quest" at the gym tomorrow (once a week butt kicking by a PT basically lol). Most days I have to remind myself to eat. I just went from liquids to puréed a couple weeks ago. I still drink at least one Protein shake per day most days - some days I just can't choke one down. This week I feel like I'm starving all day long. I just started my cycle. Wondering if that has something to do with my feeling so hungry. Nothing else is new or different really. Is my exercising catching up to me? I generally get up to 800 calories when I'm using my skim milk and fruit in my shakes and sometimes close to 900. Since I started puréed foods I've made puréed tuna (with spicy mustard) and chicken (buffalo chicken) and eat maybe half a cup of food in a meal. I like cream of whet but not really much protein there...if I have it I have it with the fairlife skim milk which has 13g of protein per cup. But sometimes diary makes me feel nauseous. So any advice? I think I'm eating the right amount of food. I'm eating my protein first. I'm constantly sipping Water. I just find it so strange to be feeling this hungry! Got my approval for Bypass on 12-30-2013. I meet with the surgeon on the 22nd. I'm excited and nervous at the same time. I've been a little overwhelmed trying to get everything I need. So glad I found this forum!!

OK...my surgery is scheduled for July 23rd, and that's all I've been thinking about....UNTIL I got a job last week...not just any job a part time job in the travel industry. I mean these jobs don't come around often and there was no way I was turning it down. My problem is of course I couldn't tell them about the surgery because there are 100 others waiting in line for this job. It requires that I go out of town for 2 weeks of training, which I am trying to cram in pre op. My question is post op. Is lifting objects a concern? At times I will be required to lift objects up to 40 pound for very short distances. It's actually just to pick them up and put them on the conveyor belt? How long before I am able to do it? I don't want to lose my dream job, but then again I don't want to mess up my surgery. I may have to delay the surgery....something I DON'T want to do. HELP!!!!

Hello, I am feeling a little blue I have shared with some family and friends my decision to have gastric bypass. All I hear is your going the easy way out, your being lazy why don't you just get off your butt and excercise and eat well. My surgery date is 01/29/15 and start my Liver shrinking diet on 01/15/15.

Feeling discouraged no support
BobbySpreck replied to MiaStacey's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I just wanted to "weigh in" on this. About 5 years ago I had lost 160 lbs on my own and it was difficult. Unfortunately I gained a good portion of it back. 111 lbs to be exact. I am now 5 weeks post op. During my initial weight loss the process was hard but whenever you wanted to take a break from dieting for a day or so, you could. You could have a beer or some pizza or a burger etc... Then get back on the diet afterwards. With gastric bypass it is not the easy way out. It can and probably will take a mental and emotional toll on you. It is difficult to stay focus on what to eat, not overeating. Not being able to just eat whatever you want. You need to have mental fortitude to get through it. Does it make it easier to lose weight, yes... But that does not mean it's easier on you mentally.. Do what's best for you and who cares what others think. By the way.. It seems to get easier mentally as you begin to lose the weight. Right now it seems worth the fight. -
So I'm scheduled for my sleeve on Monday. However, during my scope for gastro clearance, they discovered that I have a very early stage of Barrett's at the junction between my stomach and esophagus. So...he gave me a choice of whether I want to have a full bypass, which will preserve my stomach in case I need it in the future and will resolve any issues with acid. He said he can still do the sleeve, but there are no long term studies yet on what the impact is with Barrett's. I don't know what to do. Sigh. Is there anyone here who hasn't had major acid reflux issues after the sleeve? Or anyone who had issues improve with time?

Pre-Op Questions
choosehope replied to Kelsey Marie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine was today. I asked what the chances were that they would get in there and not be able to do a bypass (I've had other abdominal surgeries and probably have adhesions. ). She asked if I wanted her to do a sleeve instead if a bypass wasn't possible or if I wanted to have nothing done. No brainer for me. Do something! But I'm glad I asked. -
Hi there. . . Yes, you can switch to Prime when he deploys. You will not be covered for the sleeve with Standard unless you find an MTF to take you with Standard which is a rare, rare, almost never happens find. Here's the catch, since VSG is NOT a covered procedure, anything you have done upon his return and you go back to Standard MIGHT not be covered by Tricare. Now a way around this is to have your PCM pull annual labs for you, but NOT mention it is follow up care for VSG on the coding. There is minimum follow up after the first few weeks. For example, many patients go abroad for surgery, come home after 48-72 hours, and only have labs performed annually by their PCM, and they are doing fine. My MTF requires follow ups every 6 months for the first 3 years. But, we do have free access to psychs and nutritionists if needed. I recommend that your PCM communicate with whichever surgeon you get to perform your surgery. I'm up in the NW Florida Panhandle by Pensacola. Eglin AFB is where I had my band to sleeve revision performed. MTF Locator. http://www.tricare.mil/mtf/ Tricare won't cover the sleeve outside of MTF or VA hospitals. So don't waste your time trying to jump hoops for that surgeon. It won't work. I've fought for myself ( and with friends) in every Tricare area, Tricare South, West and North. One friend went congressional and still got denied through a civilian after getting pre-approval and everything. You'll have to put in some footwork to find an MTF that will take you on as a patient for the sleeve. But, I will say that you should not settle for just any surgery. The band really does suck especially if you can't get fills/unfills easily. I've been there done that, and had all the lovely band issues that come with it. Certain plans with Medicare are starting to cover the sleeve, Tricare might be following suit, but I've been hearing that trash since January 2009. But, Medicare wasn't covering the sleeve at all, now they are on some of the plans. So, fingers, toes, every part crossed Tricare pulls their head out, and will start covering it. If you need help, please feel free to contact me. I've been through the trenches with Tricare on this issue. I know how the process works as most MTFs follow a similar program. I'm more than happy to help.

Hi Jules! I had much the same experience as you, I was banded in 2008 and spent the past several years throwing up daily, no fun! I too have a young child (turned 1 June 11th) and my pregnancy took a toll on my band. I had band revision in August and then band to bypass on May 21st. It has been like a rebirth. I feel like I have to work harder to keep myself on track because of the years of band habits but I has been great. No more gurgling and sliming, I feel normal again Miri

Gastric bypass and acid reflux
MichJohn77 replied to RNYDawn's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I never had reflux until I had the sleeve. I had such severe reflux after that and was on 5 medications several times a day that this year I couldn't take it and revised on 8/31/15 to gastric bypass. Honestly if you already have reflux I would opt for the bypass. I have no reflux and my surgeon said its near impossible for me to ever have it again. I am off all medication and love it! -
Trouble choosing my procedure!!
achappex3 replied to sne0104's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was the total opposite. I walked into my consultation with my heart set on having the sleeve. My surgeon asked me one thing: "do you have acid reflux?" My answer: "yes. Not much though" and that was followed by "well VSG could make it worse." Along with that, and the amount of weight I'd like to lose, I pretty much walked out of there with my mind changed to the bypass -
How did you pick your doctor?
Starwarsandcupcakes replied to imlosingit2020's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine worked with my dad for over a year to try and save his leg before they ultimately amputated. I’m thoroughly convinced he saved my dad’s life. I actually met him at one of my dad’s post op appointments 2 years before I needed him. Fast forward to April 2019 and I need an appendectomy and he’s the surgeon I chose for that. At my post op he invited me to a bariatric seminar and he did my sleeve in December 2019. He’s also my surgeon for my RNY revision this coming Tuesday. I don’t think I could trust another surgeon with what he does. -
VitaleEM et al I believe that dumping only pertains to Gastric Bypass WLS could be wrong i did make a mistake once, i thought i was wrong
-
[ My biggest concern was the port, I asked my Dr a couple times just to be sure it was coming out and each time she looked at me funny and said "Yes Miriam, I would never leave it there" I knew it I just wanted to hear it I haven't had a full on dumping episode but I had something that I think was maybe dumping. I have (had) this horrible habit, when I go grocery shopping I will go to the dairy dept and get a chocolate milk. I usually couldn't eat and the chocolate milk would stay my hunger during the shopping trip. I did the same thing last week, thought it would be fine bc I wouldn't drink it all at once... It wasn't. I felt gross, flush and my stomach hurt and that was after drinking 2 oz. I paid for it and threw it away, won't do that again. I am doing great, approaching week 4 and have lost 25lbs which is shocking to me as I was a lower bmi and was told id lose slow. I am now back in Onderland which makes me extremely happy. I do have struggles, portions.... I don't get the signal that I'm satisfied or full, I don't know if it's just me or I'm broken but I don't so I have to measure everything out. I have over eaten. Attraction to slider foods, I'm so used to it that I have to remind myself I don't need those anymore. I also have a strong fear of stretching my pouch and failing. My pouch is larger than a virgin pouch, years of band abuse stretched the hell out of the top of my stomach. I also have a very good friend with RNY who did amazing for the first 3 years and is now heavier than she started. She has always sang the praises of the band citing she she wished she would have gone with it instead of bypass. I do learn by example so hopefully I can keep on the straight and narrow.
