  1. 1) I had GERD prior to surgery. I did not want to take the risk of it getting worse, which it sometimes does with sleeve 2) when I had surgery six years ago, sleeve was still pretty new. I had a fear of it becoming "lapband 2". However, at this point, it's been around long enough and has proven itself, so I wouldn't have this particular concern anymore if I were making the decision today. But because of my GERD, I'd still go with RNY/bypass.
  2. Aside from your surgeon’s recommendation for you…………. Which procedure YOU felt was best for you & why? I feel like since I am a foodie-I LOVE real food , I was an emotional eater , I have heart burn often, im over 100lbs overweight, I am over the age of 30( losing weight seems like an impossible task nowadays ), my metabolism is low, I plan on getting pregnant at least once in the future and portion control has been a major issue= Gastric bypass is best for me.

    Sleeve long term

stand alone sleeve isn't that old. It was just becoming popular when I got my RNY six years ago - it was becoming the non-RNY replacement for the lapband. It'd been around longer than that, but I don't think much. if you want longer-term stats, maybe research the DS (duodenal switch). The DS is an old surgery, and it uses a sleeved stomach. In fact, that's where they got the idea for the standalone sleeve. The DS used to be done in two stages (usually - not always). They do a sleeved stomach and then later go back in and bypass the small intestine (now most DS's are done in one surgery). They discovered that a lot of people lost weight with just the phase 1 (sleeved stomach), so they started offering that as a standalone surgery.

That is absolutely fantastic!!! I am so, so happy for you. I had my bypass June 30th, 2021, & I'm hoping to resolve my severe sleep apnea & increase mobility again. May we both be blessed with many healthy successes in the years to come. 💪💖🤗
  5. Anyone got approved for a revision because of a dilated sleeve? Original surgery in 2012. Gained all weight back. Upper GI shows massively dilated sleeve, hiatal hernia and I have grade B esophagitis but biopsies are negative for inflammation.

I was right there with you. I kept to the liquid diet and let me tell you it was hard!! Now I have had surgery my is Bypass Surgery and I am 6 days in. I cannot keep anything down, I burp and it is the nastiest taste there is. I have kept down watery cream of wheat only a 1/2 cup and I actually get full before eating all of it. It is easy for them to say don't eat that etc. I only want to taste good stuff, but I know I can't I just want some eggs bit I will wait. Stay strong!! wow - that is pretty awful. My reaction was the same as Arabesque's - have they seen your medical records and test results? Have they talked to your surgeon? How much research have they done on the various bariatric surgeries? I think a lot of people who haven't done much research on bariatric surgeries are remembering bypasses from years ago. Those WERE risky. But they do them completely differently now. They aren't much riskier than the sleeve nowadays (and honestly, neither surgery is very risky). I'm sorry you're going through this. I only told my immediate family and a few close friends before the surgery, so fortunately, I didn't have to deal with this. This sounds mean, but maybe you should just start ignoring them == as in deleting their texts without responding. That's what I would do at this point. You shouldn't have to put up with this.

So sorry they’re not being supportive. I didn’t tell anyone in my family but my mother & one brother & his wife because I knew they wouldn’t judge & would understand & be supportive. Have you turned it back on them & asked what research they have done & where they got their information? Is it from recognised & legitimate sources? What medical people have they spoken too? Have they looked at all your medical test results & history? How many people who’ve actually had weight loss surgery have they spoken too (they’ll never be able to compete with the number of people on this forum)? Do they understand the reasons why bypass is the better option for you? Do they think you’re not intelligent enough to make a rational, informed & logical decision about your own health? Why can’t they just say they’re concerned but offer support & willingness to be there for you? Honestly, there are risks. But there are risks with all surgeries & they are pretty low for bariatric surgeries. It can be a struggle to get used to how your digestive system works post surgery but you’ll get used to its idiosyncrasies & discover how it works for you. I hope they can see your position & can be encouraging & not negative.
  9. I am having gastric bypass surgery on July 28 and my extended family has been adamant that I should get the sleeve instead of the bypass. Seven of them group texted me last night about it. I felt like i was being attacked. They basically think that every horror story is going to happen to me. They act like I haven’t done an enormous amount of research on the subject (which i have of course) and don’t know the risks. Has anyone else dealt with this?

    Post op diet

Remember, your nerve endings have been affected during the surgery so they may not be as sensitive & able to register you’re full yet. Also did they remove anymore of your tummy during this surgery? If your tummy is about the same size it was before the revision, I would expect you would still be able to consume a similar portion size as you did before. The main purpose of the post surgery diet is to not damage or strain your healing digestive system. Hope you continue to recover well.
  11. Hi, everyone, first of all, English is not my native language, so please, take it easy. I went through Gastric Bypass surgery on May 19th, it's been 45 days today, July 3rd. I found out that I had a stricture 10 days ago (anastomatic stenosis), the diameter of the stricture was 8mm and through endoscopy, the doctor could enlarge it to 12mm. But even after it, it was difficult to eat soft foods, so I was hospitalized once again and yesterday I had my stricture enlarged again, now to 15mm. The doctor told me to eat only pureed foods for 30 days until I get another endoscopy done and see if it's okay to eat solid foods again. So in the best scenario, according to the doctor, I would reintroduce solid foods only within 1 month and 1 week. It feels like an eternity, I crave to eat something else than creamy soups and fruit and protein shakes. I'm thinking about trying to introduce soft foods a little before that to know how it feels, like chicken soup, with soft potatoes and minced chicken. Would you do that too? Have you ever had a stricture? If so, how did you take care of it? I'm so worried and impatient about my case. Thank you!

    Post op diet

Hey folks! Long time lurker around here as I was preparing to my surgery but todays the day i decided to sign up because I have a question and I was hoping some body experienced something similar. Today July 2nd is exactly one week post op for me. I had a revision Sleeve to Bypass on 6/25. Ive been on full liquids for a few days now having zero problems. My 1 week post op appointment with my surgeon was yesterday and he applauded me on how well I was doing. No nausea, able to take in over 70 grams of protein and 50+ ounces of fluid. He told me to give cream of wheat a try so tonight I decided to do just that. Well I finished the entire packet of Instant cream of wheat and have no full or uncomfortable feeling and I was curious was this normal? I was expecting to feel like I'm busting half way through. I know everyone is different but I fell like that's odd. That I shouldn't have been able to finish that. I remember when I had the sleeve back in 2016 when I moved to soft food I was full for the rest of the day after my first bite of tuna salad. Anyway thanks for reading. Hope everyone journey is going well! Chris
  13. Not sure if you saw my update, but after speaking with my neurologist, I decided to go with the sleeve. She told me there is more of a risk of complications involving neuropathy with the bypass, and I don't want to risk that. From what I've seen, bypass is somewhat more effective for resolving metabolic issues than sleeve, but sleeve still has a very good showing in terms of that. Good luck, whatever you decide!

I'm sorry to hear you're still struggling a little. I hope your recovery continues speedily & that you feel better shortly. I had my bypass 2 days ago & am feeling pretty good, just a little sore & very tired from not sleeping at the hospital. Please just keep taking good care of yourself & resting as much as possible. And keep hydrated above all. Let us know how you're doing when you're up to it. You're in my thoughts & prayers for full healing & a wonderful, healthy, transformative year.🤗
  15. My appointment with the surgeon himself, we just went over the surgery. He mentioned which type he'd recommend given my weight and co-morbidities. Then he went over what the surgery itself involved and asked if I had any other questions. Was very short and to the point. Now, that same day I also spoke with a nurse and dietician. The nurse asked some more probing questions about my acid reflux and ended up ordering an endoscopy since I was self-pay (and therefore couldn't afford revision if I got sleeve and it made things worse). We also went over pre and post-op expectations, as well as what to expect during the hospital stay.

I would definitely give some push back and ask for a different prep - there are many. Does he know that you have had WLS since your last scope? I just had one last month and they prescribed SuPrep, which is a low volume, two step prep - two 8 oz (IIRC) bottles that you drink fairly quickly, followed by a couple of bottles of water the next hour, done the night before and then again the morning of the procedure, and that seemed to go well - for both me and the doc. Should be little problem for a 1 year post op. My wife had a bad scope some years ago despite being compliant with the prep, It turns out that others with the DS like her reported similar problems - it seems that the wacky intestinal configuration needs a bit more time to clean out, as we discussed in one of our support group meetings. One of the other vets in the group who had a similar problem worked out a revised routine with his gastro that basically involved doing the clear diet for two (or possibly three) days before the bowel prep, and that did the job. When it was time for my wife's next scope a couple of years ago - new gastro since we had moved - we hit him up with the problem, and while he was focusing mostly on the WLS needing a low volume prep, which he prescribed, she did the modified longer liquid (not strictly clear the first day, just liquidy) and all went well with that one, too. So, while I am not an MD, it is clear that there are several ways to get the job done, and you gastro should be sensitive to your needs as well as his own. It kinda sounds like he is punishing you for what he may interpret as non-compliance the last time, or maybe this potion is what he is most experienced with for a more challenging case, and while he may be aware of newer preps on the market, he isn't experienced with them and goes with his old tried and true. Again, I would push back at this, tell him that you can't comply with this and why. Discuss what other options there are to get the job done that works for both of you. Your medical care, as with most things in life, are a negotiation and you have a say in this. If the doc doesn't want to comply with your needs, then it is entirely within your rights to go to a different doctor to get what you need. Ask your PCP or your bariatric practice for a referral to someone more bariatric friendly, if necessary. Good luck,

My bypass on June 30th went very well & I returned home a day later. I'm catching up on sleep & doing my homework: staying hydrated, walking, doing the breathing exercises & getting in some protein. The staff at the hospital were wonderful, very reassuring & caring, & now that my gas pain is dissipating, I only have a little soreness in the the upper abdomen which is easily kept at bay with Tylenol. If you have an upcoming surgery, please know that it's been much easier than I anticipated. Blessings to you for a wonderful weekend & journey.
  19. Returned home yesterday after one pretty sleepless night in the hospital (those beds, ugh!) & am doing really well. The bypass was a success & I still have my gallbladder. My blood work, blood pressure, urine output, oxygenation & blood glucose were all good so I'm home & catching up on sleep.

Between extended naps, I'm hydrating, walking, doing calf raises & my breathing exercises & getting in some protein.

The gas pain from the surgery is finally subsiding & I'll be starting my vitamins & meds tomorrow & start upping my protein, too.

Please know, they take great care of you after your surgery & the gas pain usually comes in short bursts & can be made better by walking & doing the breathing exercises. If you're having the surgery soon, please know you will be okay & will recover pretty quickly, too, if you don't have any complications, which are pretty rare.

    Wishing everyone a blessed weekend.

If you have any questions, please know I'll be hosting a livestream on my YouTube channel this Sunday, July 4th at 3pm EST if you want to come by to hear of the experience from pre-op testing to coming home. I'll be happy to answer any questions. Here's a link to my short update & channel:

Hi, Candace! I linked a very short update just so people could find my channel. I was hoping to do an informative livestream today with Q & A but I'm still so tired.

I will have a livestream next Sunday, July 11th at 3pm EST where I'll go over everything from pre-op appointments to the day of surgery & going home if you want to join me.

I'm sorry for the confusion but I will share all the info soon; I just need more sleep & rest than I realized. That said, all is going very well. Take good care, Candace!

    Honeymoon Period

I think it depends on how far out from your original surgery you had your revision. For me, my revision was 8 months after my sleeve due to GERD that was causing intractable hiccups. Because I was still in the weight loss phase I continued to lose pretty steadily until the end of February this year (14 months from my sleeve surgery) when I hit 155lbs which is where I’m maintaining now.

    Pre-op diet weight loss

I’m jealous. I started my preop diet Monday and was told to only do liquids no food except yogurt jello and pudding. My head hurts like crazy and my stomach is killing me. I’m doing a revision because of gerd I do not remember feeling like this the 1st time. I breezed through it. I’m suffering right now

    Honeymoon Period

I was revised in February and so far I've lost 28 pounds. I would like to lose another 20-25. The weight, though not flying off, is pretty steady at coming off in ounces. I stall every now and again but it lasts maybe a week. I initially didn't like the RNY but I really appreciate it now. I definitely have restriction and it is very easy to not go overboard otherwise I'll be in agony and I'm against that! I am in a caloric deficit for sure but I'm wondering if my body will get used to the tiny amount I'm taking in and just stop losing.

    July 2021 Surgery People!

Hey everyone! Gastric Bypass July 9th here. I had my pre-op appointment yesterday and they were extremely thorough! For those interested, I wanted to go over the details of what my process has looked like so far: - My insurance required an EKG, blood work, and gallbladder scan. So, during my pre-op, they redid all of those to compare the previous values with the most recent results. normal EKG, no high cholesterol, no high BP, no gallstones, normal thyroid levels, higher-ish estrogen, and borderline pre-diabetic which was NOT fun to hear but will hopefully be resolved with Bypass. - I spoke with the nurse and my (very handsome lol) surgeon, who re-reviewed all possible risks and complications. He explained how he would do the surgery (five incisions, robotic) and what to expect before and after. He also checked me for hernias, which I don't have. - Met with my dietician to re-review my pre-op diet and just to check in with me. She provided me with info on how to set up future appointments if needed as I transition through the phases. - The clinic gave me information on how to get my family member informed on what was happening. The hospital I am using has an app and the surgeon's team will text updates periodically. - I'm expected to be in-patient and will stay for one night unless I have complications. - They provided me with the sterile soap, Hibiclens and instructions on how to use it. bathe with half the bottle the night before, the other half the morning of (they gave me a sheet i have to mark down the date and time of the wash and turn it in the morning of). wash hair, no products, no contacts, no invisalign, clean sheets, clean pajamas. - the doctor gave me my prescriptions, which include: Gabapentin, acetominaphen, ondansetron for nausea, promethazine syrup, ursodial to prevent gallstones (thankfully i don't have any), and prilosec (OTC). - I had a chest xray and was asked if I had any implant anywhere (i don't.) all came back normal. - spoke with the anesthesiologist who weighed me, took my height, and explained the overall process to me. i've only been under once for a 70-minute MRI a few years ago but i know approximately what to expect. I will also be getting a 96-hour abdominal block to help with pain along with my (very strong) medication. - They provided me with information on what to eat and drink the night before (light breakfast, protein shake, clear liquids, and then four hours before the surgery, 16 oz of water), day of (clear liquids) four days after, two weeks after, (heavy liquids) one month after (maintenance phase). - set up a post-op appt 10 days later, and another one a month after surgery. - The morning of the surgery i arrive at 7:30 am, am checked in and put in pre-op, surgery should last two hours, one hour of recovery, and then moved to my private room where my sister will be waiting for me. no overnight guests because of COVID but this hospital has a designated bariatric surgery floor so all of the nurses are specialized in this, and even nicer, all of the equipment accommodate larger patients. so, large recliners, large beds, laaarge gowns, large chairs, sturdy IV machines, belly bands. very comfortable. - i'm planning on bringing an ipad, books, lip balm, lotions, warmer socks, grippy sandals, button down pajamas, a small pillow they recommended as a "splint" when i get in and out of bed, and toiletries. I feel pretty ready i suppose, but it doesn't feel quite real yet! crazy to believe that in a few months i'll be down a significant amount of weight (hopefully) and look slimmer. I am on my two-week pre-op diet which consists of two protein shakes and one light meal a day, with "free" snack foods including fat free cheese, lean meats, sugar free jello popsicles and pudding, high protein yogurts, and non-starchy veggies with light hummus or light ranch. hasn't been super easy but I'm trying my best. and LOTS of water. Let me know if you have questions, i'll be glad to answer them.
  24. You may lose hair after a bypass but it will grow back. I’ve been using a biotic shampoo and taking biotic supplements. It couldn’t hurt!
