What the heck? I am nearly three months out. I have struggled since surgery to eat. It's not painful, it's just unappealing. I have no hunger, I have no desire to eat and I am generally repulsed by food. Except during PMS, of course. That's the only time I want to eat, and the only time I ever feel anything resembling hunger. Lately, whenever I drink my chai latte Protein drink, or have anything else with dairy, I experience very uncomfortable and unpleasant side effects. It happens with milk, cottage cheese and even yogurt. Some things simply make me feel nauseated, but other things make me incredibly sick. I even tried mixing my Protein powder with Water to see if I could avoid the issues, but THAT makes me sick, too. I tried switching my milk to Lactaid, since I had to do that during my pregnancy, but even that makes me feel sick. Speaking of pregnancy, I'd almost believe I was pregnant by the way I feel nauseated all day if I eat dairy in the morning. But I'm not - I swear. I'm at a point where after eating one small meatball I'm done. I feel disgusted by food and it's incredibly difficult to eat enough calories. I really think that my frequent lapses into the under 500 calorie zone (and I'm often under 400) is partly why I'm such a slow loser. I can make it all the way to dinner time and never eat a single bite or drink a Protein Drink, and I only eat at that point because my sleeve is empty and the acid starts to bother me. I like string cheese and beef Jerky but I struggle to get a stick of cheese or a few pieces of jerky in, too. My big help was the protein drink, but now it seems that isn't an option. I'm also about to move to a country where string cheese and beef jerky are not going to be food options. I'm planning to order some cases online and ship them but there will be a period where I'll simply be without. I can hand carry some while we're traveling but I don't know that living on jerky is a great idea. What am I going to eat now? I really need ideas and advice. Everything makes me feel sick - either physically, or mentally. I'm never going to drop this weight or be healthy if I can't eat. If it helps, we avoid pork and shellfish completely, so those aren't possibilities. I'd appreciate any ideas. Maybe there's something I can take to make the milk not bother me as much? ~Cheri

Unjury Unflavored
O.T.R. sleever replied to kjntwins's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It has a slight milky taste. Kinda like watered down powered milk. I personally use the unflavored to add protein to milk based foods like yogurt, cottage cheese, ranch dressing, etc. -
I travel alot with my job and have no issues. I take my Protein drinks and use the fridge in the rooms. I also grab a yogurt and ceral in the morning from the Breakfast area of the hotels I stay at. As for eating when I am on the rode I order things like Soup or chili. Sometimes I order grilled chicken breast with veggies. I have less issues on the rode than when I am home. Maybe because I am more carful or its because I am alone and no one to talk to during dinner so I pay better attention to what i am eating. Kat

Hi. I love sweets, too. My new substitute for candy and sugar is dried fruit. It's got fiber and vitamins and is very sweet. Nonfat, sugar-free yogurt is another sweet treat that is healthy. Sorry about the job situation. You really should find something new. We spend so much of our life at work that it's really important to find something you like. Nancy

One week post op
FieryRed replied to GlutenFreeSingleMom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved Wednesday and had hunger pains within hours of surgery. For the first two days, it was almost constant. Even after I ate/drank, when I should have been full. So it made it hard to realize when I was actually full. But the hunger pains are lessening and now replaced by digestive pains. lol Have found my favorite meal is a flavored Greek yogurt with a scoop of unjury, a splash of milk and an ice cube in the blender. Alternately, a vanilla greek yogurt with Unjury, a squirt of Mio and ice is good too. -
Feeling TOO good after surgery?
intime450 replied to mamamareli's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My surgery was wednesday the 8th. I'm doing pretty well. Had some gas pain but no real pain from the incisions. The largest incision has been a little sore but not worth taking meds for. The gas pain is finally gone but I am having some difficulty getting all the fluids in and with any little bit of consumption my tummy just rumbles. Been on clear liquids since surgery but get to start yogurt, pudding, and cream soup tomorrow so maybe that will go down well. I have absolutely no hunger so thats kinda nice. So glad I did this finally!!! Nothing but better from now on!!! -
I've got a grocery list started. My dietician recommends crystal light, propel, calorie free or sugar free drinks, broth Soups, and sugar free popsicles. These are "free" foods that you can have in unlimited amounts. Other foods like gatorade, reg. Jello, popsicles, light yogurt, or Protein shakes I can have in limited amounts because of the sugar. I'm not real excited about doing this, but the nurse expained to me that the longer you can do this diet, the better it will be for your surgery. Your liver will get smaller and be out of the way for the laproscopic surgery. I'm going to try my best! I'm going to the grocery store tonight.

Will you share your ideas on food choices?
Rachael replied to MOMIOF3CV's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I have been eating lots of greek yogurt. Yoplait makes a good one with 14 grams of Protein. I also baked some tilipa last night. Any white fish doesn't need pureed and I added some lemon pepper seasoning. I am planning on having refried Beans this week and cottage cheese and of course mashed potatoes. I have been trying to load up on protein and need to pull out my eating well after weight lost surgery cookbook. I didn't look at it through the clear/full liquid stages. -
My suggestion is to try different shakes... my Dr. gave me a list of shakes to buy/try - you may be sensitive to the dairy, wheat, high level of Protein, etc. As for taste... there are a lot of shakes to try. My Dr's pre-surgery diet is 3 shakes a day... but, I can add 1 cup of steamed veggies (nothing on them) and 1 protein (like 1 boiled egg or 1 lite 6 oz yogurt or 3 oz chix) per day. It's not easy!!! My date is July 25th!!! Keep in touch! Would love to compare notes

Oh and so far ive been doing research on trying to mix up the protein shake ingredients and one that i tried today has whole grain oats, almond milk frozen mixed berries, greek yogurt, and a scoop of chocolate protein and its bareable. Still not anything great

I like getting a high protein nonfat Greek yogurt (I use fage nonfat), putting in some organic unsweetened cocoa (I use Cocoavia cardio health), and mixing in sugar free maple syrup (I use Maple Grove farms no sugar syrup) to sweeten it. Tastes so good. I wish I knew about this recipe when I was in the puree stage but I just recently found it somewhere on the net. I don't even remember where.

I keep my pantry and fridge full of grab and go options! Any low sugar Greek yogurt (I like siggis, two good, oikos triple zero), two good smoothies, bel gioso individual cheeses, cottage cheese cups, individual nut packs, whisps, chomps, hilo chips, egg bites, protein one bars. I always keep a pack of protein shakes in my trunk for emergencies!

I'm on day 4 of my liquid diet. Good lord I swear i saw my son eating some chips and I wanted to lick his fingers!!"lol. I hate this diet, seems mine is also strict. I have no sensible dinner, cream based soups etc. I know it will get better soon. But I tell you it is hard to psyche yourself out. Especially when you know you have nothing wrong w your stomach and can eat it if you wanted to without the dumping and sickness afterwards. I have mild headaches but I was told its the sugar as lack of caffeine in your body. You can do it! Stay strong! Are you able to have cream based soups, cream of wheat? Yogurt?

Just a head's up too - there's a couple of low carb ones that advertise themselves that way (Carb Smart is one) and I have to say I liked the idea until I really read the package. It doesn't even claim it's yogurt! It's nearly all chemicals and junk, but hey, low carb is hot so it sells. Just read the labels to make sure you're getting what you really want.

Did your Doc require a pre-op diet?
bronco replied to whosthatgirl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My doctor requires 3 - 3 week periods of diet. First 3 weeks is before surgery to shrink the liver and make it easier/safer to insert the band. The target is to lose 10% of the total weight and consists of 3 Slim Fast and all the vegetables you want to eat. Following surgery there are 3 weeks of clear moving to cloudy liquids. Juice, broth, popsicles, protein shake, Slim Fast (High Protein), yogurt, etc. The last three week are after the follow up visit to dietitian and surgeon. Consist of mushies, purees, cottage cheese, etc. The intent here is to allow the surgery to fully heal and prevent the band from moving or causing other problems. Then the first fill occurs and you get to "experiment" on different foods by doing lots of chewing. Doc says to eat off of a bread plate, divide it in half with one part being protein an the other complex carbohydrates (salad, vegetables, etc.) No more white bread, white rice, pasta, or high glycemic foods. My opinion is that two weeks in each phase would be sufficient, but I'm not the doc. -

yesterday was my 3rd day of liquid diet and I am having a bad time too. Specially feeding my family and cooking for them and not being able to eat it. When I get hungry I get a cup of yogurt or apple sauce or a shake and stay away from the kitchen as much as possible. I have lost 4 lbs already. I did medifast 2 yrs ago and it was easier than this. -

Bobp replied to whosthatgirl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Thanks for the reply. Yes it gets easier. I am on day 8 of 21 and I think I will make it through. Living on protien shakes, yogurt, sugar free pops and broth. Believe or not, I actually feel full (psychological??). I do not go anywhere near the cafeteria at work. The only time I think of food is in the grocery store or driving by a restaraunt with the windows rolled down. If you go out to eat and miss it, try ordering just soup and consuming just the liquid...its a stretch of the rules but can do wonders for sanity...I did that Sunday and it made me feel much better -
3 days out of surgery
Lola.in.OKC replied to Amour.de.lionne's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow, it sounds as if you are doing SUPER! My RNY surgery was on 6/18/2014 so I am nine days out. By Day 5, I was gagging from drinking the shakes so, with the NUT's approval, I started on hi-pro Soups and Greek yogurt thinned with part of my shake. I thought I'd made heaven - hahaha! Today, the NUT allowed me to eat non-fat refried Beans thinned with chicken broth - yummy! The beans and the yogurt should have been on the 2 Week food Phase but everything looked so I got early approval. Don't be afraid to ask what you might be able to move up in the food phases. And, ALWAYS check with your NUT before making any changes! Great changes are coming our way - woo hoo!! -
Confessions from a non-com (as in non-compliant)
Orchids&Dragons replied to Orchids&Dragons's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
OMgosh, 20 grams of protein in one meal - yikes! I looked at my log and the most I've ever gotten from "real food" was 12, and that was yogurt! On solid food (other than protein bars which I now use for breakfast), the most I've ever hit was 9! -
14 Day Post Lap Band Surgery - Time For Mushies! Help!
sherrypep replied to jsi69i's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am on day 7 and mentally hungry. Are you allowed applesauce and yogurt and pudding already? I go for my postop check tomorrow and I really hope they say I can have some of that stuff or pureed food. -
I was allowed to have some salad at the 3 month mark. All docs are different so it's best to ask your particular one. Just make sure you are regularly meeting your nutrient goals before adding in the salads. I try to use veggies with the most nutritional value, so my salads have consisted of spinach and romaine, any other greens would be good but i find the rather bitter. I add some shredded cheese, canned beans, diced up leftover chicken, or whatever i have on hand. I make my own salad dressings now, i tried using greek yogurt, but it was to tangy for me, so i just use plain yogurt, with seasonings. There are a ton of dressing recipes out there, so just google them.

all protein makes me sick! what to do?!?!?
MINI-Me replied to anninva's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Ann - I gagged on everything too. The only ones I could somewhat tolerate were "Flavorless" Any whey which I added to smoothies, yogurt, cooled hot cocoa and unjury chicken Soup. How far out are you? What drinks/powders have you tried? I could better give tips if I knew more.
