    Michigan Sleevers

Redford, Michigan Got sleeved the day after Memorial Day . Didn't get to come home until the following Saturday. Complications.
  2. Hello everyone I am 18 month post op and if many of you have heard my stories will understand that I been through a lot since I had Surgury. Unfortunately I have had many complications and recently I was put on TPN which is iv nutrition for the second time. The reason I had gastric bypass was because I had severe erosion in my esophagus and had esophagitis and my surgeon told me that I could develop esophagus cancer. I was also overweight for my height. I am 4"11 and I was 189 pounds before Surgury. I would aspirate in my sleep and had the worse reflux ever. Now I have been very depress and feel so much regret since I lost so much weight. The surgeon is trying to figure out why is it that I keep losing and can't gain weight on my own. Last week I was 90 pounds and since on TPN I have gained 6 pounds. I am 96 pounds now. I was advice to see someone for Theapy but I want to be able to move on normally. Has anyone experience depression or regrets? Also I have had so many Surgury and never was able to fully workout and now I see sagging skin on my legs, arms and belly and feel more depress. I don't want to have more Surgury but I am trying to deal with all these emotions. Any suggestions will be appreciated. I am very Down and feel hopeless of life. I get teary and guilt is to much to handle. Thanks for reading my post and looking forward to hearing what you all think or advice.

    Panniculectomy?

Dixie I am so glad everything went so well for you. Wow that excess skin sure did weigh a lot. I bet your back is feeling a lot better with it gone. How long do you have to have the drains for? Did the Dr say how long you needed to be off work to recover? Sherri I am so sorry to hear about what happened to you with that Nurse not listening to you. I can't imagine waking up and not being able to move at all. I am 61 and on June 26th I will be having breast reduction and FNG. I am scared of the pain I will have and possible complications. I will have 2 surgeons as my girls hang down 10 inches form where they are suppose to be. The Doctors were only willing to do my breasts at this weight. They want me down to 180 before they will remove the excess skin on my tummy. I am hoping with the breast reduction I will be able to stand better despite the 4 herniated discs I have. I also sent you a private message. I haven't seen anyone else on the site close to my starting weight that had excess skin removal surgeries and I would love to keep in touch with you. Keep us informed as to how you are doing. HUGS
  4. Dr. Illan in Tijuana. He loves what he does and cares about his patients. You will stay two nights in the hospital and one night in a local hotel before you are "discharged". Once you get home, he is always available by email, phone or Skype. I am three months post-op and have had ZERO complications. Going back next month as my sister's companion.
  5. Hi guys, I thought I share my story... I had my sleeve procedure on the 6th June 2017 (80% of the stomach was removed, with no complications) when I waked up I was in so much pain I literally had tears pouring out of my eyes while in the recovery unit, it was so bad that I also was shaking... however after getting some pain relief and forcing myself to walk within 30 min of leaving the recovery unit I could clearly see the pain is was due to the gases and my inability to move around. With some help of my lovely wife, I walked around the hospital for 45 min and it was the best thing I ever did. I went from 10/10 pain to 2-4/10, I continued that routine for the day and was discharged one day post OP. On day 2 post OP, I due to the liquid intake and due to the medication intake end up throwing back which was a lesson learned and a scary one too.. As of now I am on day 3 post OP and have had greatly reduced pain apart from the slight pressure and uncomfortableness due to the wound holes around my stomach, which is expected to due the size and trauma. I have been able to go for little walks and do just about any activity at home where there is no need to bend over while I am on leave from work to recover. I still have issues sitting down in on a seat or when I am trying to lay down or get up which is ok I guess as this puts pressure on the wound holes. I just wanted to say that the experience can greatly vary from person to person On the food/liquid intake side of things, I am now day 3 post OP and can tolerate, jelly, juices (100%), ice creams (ice blocks) etc The only thing at the moment which I have and is annoyance is the drastic reduction of liquid I can take, at about 45ml per 30 min otherwise I start with the hiccups and then the dreadful Throw up Also, I also make sure that any liquid taken must be taken while I am in an upright position followed by a little walk to reduce any throwback.. Below you will see my picture at day 3 post OP, and weight at about 120kg.

    Long term vsg implications

Amazing. There are those of us with GP who got the sleeve to fix the GP who aren't cured and a bunch who are. We're still alive. Yes I'm more complicated and have problems, but it isn't a life stopage issue unless your mind/attitude does it.

    WLS before or after children

Hi I haven't had my surgery yet, and I do not have children yet but this was a topic that I looked into as well because I would like to have children in the future. I actually found an article (if I can find it again I'll share it with you) that stated that children who are conceived after the mother has WLS are significantly healthier and less likely to be obese when they grow up due to an activation of certain genes during the fetal growth. Also WLS reduces the risk of needing a c-section. I have a friend who had kids after and her children are healthy... however she got pregnant before the 18 months was up with her first child and she had a few complications with nutrition because her body wasn't ready. Her second child went smoothly like a normal pregnancy. I also know some who are waiting because they don't want to have to lose the weight again after child birth.
  9. Hey all I had surgery June 5 I didn't have any complications I was walking the halls no problems not taking pain meds but I've notice Day 3 it's starting to hurt a little more but I'm pushing through it getting my required liquids in is a struggle for sure trying my best to get enough water hurts like omg protein shakes are ok but hurt a lil bit I just want all to pass
  10. I am cash pay. I went for the initial consult to the Beverly Hills board certified doc who explained his history and what he surgically does to prevent complications, why choose him with his excellent record. I was convinced. However, once I heard the price, $19k, I wondered whether it would be worth the risk to do this in Mexico. Where it is apparently much much less. But the risks. Patients aren't protected there by the threat of lawsuits etc. Is the extra $10k worth it to keep me safe? I have small children and I'm a single mom. What do you all think? I want to get sleeved in July. Thanks.

    Leaving dieting behind

Hahahaha. Wow. Okay. I didn't think this post would get so many opinions and emotions going!! The Outsidematchinside poster- for some reason she thinks I lie about things on here!? Hahaa okay. Not sure how that would benefit me. She has taken me as some kind of enemy? I don't get it. But whatever. All my old posts are here. Read them if you want. I've told my story multiple times. Sigh. I went through a really really hard time the year after my surgery both physically and mentally. Doesn't make me a liar!! I had bypass. I had complications. I had it reversed to a sleeve. I had a stricture. I relapsed into anorexia. I went to treatment. I learned about Intuitive Eating as a way to both lose and maintain weight. I'm living that way now and it's completely wonderful. The end. Anyway. It's up to you guys what you ultimately want to do with your eating post surgery. I'm not trying to convince you but I am offering a viable alternative to dieting forever. Who wouldn't at least give that a chance? Dieting was actually how I gained most of my 120lbs of excess weight. I would diet, then binge, then feel guilty, diet, repeat. Every time I "fell off the wagon" I gained weight. 3 years After my bariatric surgery I can eat A LOT. I started to repeat that same pattern and I started to panic and gained a little weight. I knew I would diet myself obese again!! I wasn't about to let that happen. That's when I really committed to Intuitive Eating as an alternative. It works for me because: my body isn't deprived, my mind isn't deprived, my metabolism is super fast because it has fuel, and I NEVER binge or even overeat. I don't need to. I'm really well fed all the time. I eat when I am hungry. I stop when I'm full. Of course, I had to change my ideas about what portions looked like to. I don't overeat but my past diet self would have thought so. I eat approx 2000-3000 calories a day. Sometimes more but not usually less. I don't count but once in awhile I tally up out of curiosity. Eating that much is NORMAL. If your going to discount what I'm saying but you don't know anything about Intuitive Eating-- well how do you know I'm not right? I'm not anti bariatric surgery!! Bariatric surgery is an awesome tool to get large amounts of weight off quickly. I do not regret my surgery even with the complications I had. Bariatric surgery changes and saves lives! I'm not here to argue with you all or debate. Intuitive eating works to stabilize ones weight at ones healthiest set point. It doesn't not cause all out gorging. In fact, the opposite is true. I often pass up foods or don't finish things I would have gorged on before. Because I'm allowed to have anything I want, the urge to overeat goes away. But let's take it a step further than what I eat or what I weigh. Let me tell you the best part. I DONT CARE ANYMORE. I'm finally living my life. If my body wants to gain weight- fine!! I stopped believing that my weight equated to my value. I stopped worrying about 5 f**king pounds. Or ten pounds. Who cares?? Being overweight is f**king sexy okay. It's fine. It's not a criminal act. I decided to love myself enough to let go of trying to be more acceptable to other people. My weight has stayed exactly the same for a year now as far as I know. My clothes all still fits. Once in awhile I will take my measurements- they are the same as a year ago. Sometimes I seem to get thinner and sometimes a little bigger but I just know that's normal now. I can't explain to you in words how amazing my life is now. It's changed everything for me. There was no way I could go on with my life continually watching my food intake and making sure I stayed at my goal weight by dieting behavior. I wasn't able to be truly happy. I had to change my behavior and I had to start loving myself regardless of my weight. I had to stop the obsession with food and weight and the guilt!! You're all gonna do what you want to do. I'm offering a hand out to those who might want a different way. I'm just here to help. I don't check every day but I will reply to messages if you want to talk. I've included some more pictures so you can see I'm not a lying POS. bahahaaa. [emoji849] Also I have an Instagram devoted to Intuitive eating. You can go to it and follow if you want to! I'm in a few support groups for Intuitive Eating on Facebook as well and there are many members with past bariatric surgeries there. Instagram: @afeastonyourlife Before surgery At my lowest weight. [emoji20] yuck! Lowest weight vs. after a year of Intuitive Eating A typical meal for me. I love ketchup!!! Me and my adorable kids last Sunday!! I'm raising them to be intuitive eaters as well! A week or so ago on a work trip. That's me! Not a liar. Not a crazy person. Not an anomaly. Just another (formally) fucked up eater trying to figure out how to live healthy and happy.

    Panniculectomy?

I have no belly button! For most people it's a 20% chance of complication like it dying or getting infected. But for me because of my conditions I had an over 90% chance of it being infected and dying. Not worth the risk!
  13. I've always been an anxious muncher. It's so tough preop because not only do you have to overcome stress eating, but you also get stressed about the surgery itself. But it does get much better post op. I have had some minor food cravings, but they are nowhere near the compulsion I used to experience. The food commercials that used to drive me nuts preop have absolutely no power over me now. I could care less about pizza, and I used to order one every week just for myself. Sweets make me nauseous and preop I'd plow through an entire pint a few times a week. I also realized whatever momentary "cravings" I do get now are usually because it's time for me to eat again, and completely disappear once I have a spoonful of the foods I should be eating. I will warn you that some folks do have cravings post op. I was one of them. Once I started tolerating my full liquids better, the food cravings started creeping back in, but again, it was nowhere near as bad as it ever was pre op. They were frustrating, but were never tempting enough for me to want to break my diet. You just gotta refocus, think about the drastic change you just put yourself through in order to lose weight, and the possible complications you face by advancing your diet too soon. Good luck to you!
  14. Is any scared they won't have as much success as others? Or are you scared of failing? Do we all have that feeling? Also, I know two people who body had complications after surgery but it wasn't the surgery just their bodies had been overweight so long it caused complications. I was afraid of that happening but thank God it didn't.

  15. Well, surgery was last Friday; the band is now out and the sleeve in. Everything went smoothly, no complications. I actually feel great, though a little sore. No nausea (I took pills to prevent it) and have not had a hard time swallowing or any stomach pain whatsoever. It was outpatient and I was walking that night by myself to the bathroom. I stressed over this for three weeks before and shouldn't have. And I have no psychological stress like I thought I might have over losing most of my stomach. So glad that part's over. I am really tired of liquids though, and would give anything to munch on a cracker! I think one thing that has speeded up my recovery is I have been drinking fresh green veggies juices during prep (with consent of nutritionist) and the same plus fresh watermelon juice after the surgery. I highly recommend that to anyone who has a juicer--with your doctor's OK of course.

    LOOKING FOR ONTARIO PALS

I'm in Peterborough, Ontario. Had surgery in Oct 2016 at Toronto Western. Good luck on your surgeries! No regrets and no complications for me. Down 85lbs and feeling good!!
  17. OutsideMatchInside

    Someone help me.

This is not normal. You need to contact your Dr and have them work with you on while you are only able to get so little in per day. You could have a complication. It is better to have the Dr validate where you should be than strangers on the internet.

    Leaving dieting behind

Yes I have dumping but my surgery was more complicated than most. It's rare to have it with the sleeve. I get it and it sucks so bad. But it's getting better. I've been eating Intuitively for about a year now with some small relapses back into dieting and that mindset but not for more than a day or so. The last 3 months I've REALLY let go and stopped weighing myself EVER, stopped even considering what I eat. I eat so much, always listening to my body and it's cravings. I eat all kinds of foods from fresh to processed and savory to sweet. I eat carbs all the time. I love desserts. I drink alcohol. I enjoy whatever I want. I've not been actively dieting for a year at least but now I've really, really let go of the fear and I'm continuing to make progress. I don't worry about wether I'm eating too much, grazing, eating something fattening. I have really just LET GO. I eat when I'm hungry and when I'm full I stop. Honestly I just don't even think about it. I follow my bodies cravings. I have gained no weight. I'm exactly the same. If anything, I've lost. I don't know. I don't care. I don't weigh myself. BUT my clothes all still fit perfectly. But who cares anyway. My life is finally where I want it to be and I am free. I will never ever go back to dieting. I truly believe Intuitive Eating will keep me healthy for the rest of my life. Picture of me and my daughter a few days ago.

    Bypass Vs. Sleeve?

I'm single and I live alone. I chose the sleeve because of the easier recovery and lower complications. It also requires a lower level of life long maintenance. I didn't have GERD so the Sleeve was an was an easy choice. What surgery you want is really a personal choice. A couple things to consider is what surgery does your Surgeon perform the most of? That is the one they are probably skilled with the best. And then your other medical conditions. Long term they are about the same as far as weight loss, how much weight you lose is up to you.

    Bypass Vs. Sleeve?

My surgeon recommended the RNY to me. I took his advice and had it done 7 1/2 months ago. I am doing great (no complications) and would do it again in a heartbeat. My only regret is that I didn't have it done sooner.
  21. Hey everyone. I'm new here. I have a consultation with a surgeon on June 19th. I'm from NYC. I've had a consultation with this doctor before, over two and a half years ago. At the time, I was recommended the gastric sleeve. I'm 27, currently weigh 406lbs and this is just under the heaviest I've ever been. When I was 22, I had DVT (blood clot which started in my left leg) which lead to compartment syndrome, a pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in my lung) and foot drop(a weakness/paralysis in my right foot which causes it to be positioned in a downward angle which affects my gait). I had to have four surgeries on my leg to prevent amputation and open heart surgery to break up the clot in my lung. At 24, I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. The reason I didn't go through with the surgery the first time was that I wasn't approved. You would think after everything I've been through I would have gotten it together back then but it's complicated because the physical issues I was dealing were constantly affected by mental health issues (another issue entirely but it is being treated) and vice versa. This is a photo of me shortly after scheduling my consultation. I don't take many photos of my body. But I hope that will change. Any words of advice, encouragement? I feel at peace with this decision but it would be nice to talk to others who have had it, even if they are strangers.

    New to the group

Im 47, male. Just north of Dallas, in Prosper. I would try Dr. Stowers at My Bariactric Solution. I choose him because WLS is something he has been doing for a long time and thats all he does. Im 6 weeks out today, and I havent had any major complications and recovery is going well so far. As far has your swallowing problem, I would imagine that you pre and post diet may be more strict. Such as extended liquid phase, unless your condition is much more severe. I would give him a call.
  23. 6/5/17- I decided to start my own status update so I would have a journal of sorts to look back on when I am closer to my goal.

So I am three weeks post-op today. My journey thus far has been relatively easy with no major complications. I have been able to gradually increase my daily exercise and calorie intake with few problems. I am following my plan mostly, but have been combining weeks 3 & 4 because they are very similar with only the addition of a few items.  My constipation is over and my system has pretty much returned to normal. I have not vomited even once though I was nauseous the first day after surgery. I am feeling very blessed to have had this opportunity to improve my health at this point in my life. The driving force for me wanting to have this surgery was to give my body the best possible chance at putting my diabetes into remission, while also reaching and maintaining a healthy weight.

I have not needed to take any medications for my diabetes since the day before surgery. My 14 day bs average is 99. I check my bs twice a day, fasting and 2 hours after dinner or lunch. Thus far I have not had a reading over 110. I am very encouraged by these numbers. Prior to surgery I could not have obtained these numbers without my medication.

Last week I went back to work and I also starting exercising on my new elliptical machine.  Work went well, but it did tire me out the first couple of days. I added a healthy snack mid afternoon and that really helped get my energy level up to last the whole day. I am weighing and tracking my food in MFP. I want to be successful and I know my biggest problem has always been portion control. This will keep me accountable and also help me to see trends. So here are my weekly averages thus far .

    5/16-22/17 - 244

    5/23-29/17-  602

    5/30-6/4- 740

I am happy that I have been able to get my calories up fairly quickly. I definitely feel the restriction and I am able to eat only 2.5-3.5 oz  at a meal. My protein level has been between 60-65g. I  am shooting for 70-80 in the next week and I feel that should bring my calories up to 800. I am doing my best to listen to my body and eat only when I am hungry, so I am not going to stress out about exactly how many calories or grams of protein I eat as long as I feel good and they are not too low. Figuring out a sustainable healthy lifestyle is probably the hardest part of this journey. The debate on these forums is helpful, but sometimes it is hard to know what exactly is going to work for me until I try it.  I know being a type 2 diabetic that my body is very carb sensitive. Right now with my somewhat limited diet it has been easy as I am mainly eating protein and a few veggies. I guess I will see how things go as I move along and maybe try a few complex carbs as I have more room in my diet.

    my weight log

    5/18- 208

    5/24- 196

    5/29- 195

    6/5- 193.5

I am very happy with those numbers. I do not have any weekly or monthly weight loss goals. I am just going to follow my plan and let things fall where they may. Slow loss is just fine with me and NSV are abundant. I have dropped a size already and I am feeling great!

I think this is a good first update. It is long, but I had three weeks worth of thoughts to get logged. I want to thank this forum and its members for all of their support. Since I had my surgery in Mexico I don't have a local group to talk with. I have learned so much reading the threads here and have made some great online friends along the way.

I hope to add my thoughts and progress here at least once a week.

Hey, @bacon - so glad to hear from you, but so sorry to read of what's been going on with you. How did the band get that tight, from the doc doing fills? That is inexcusable! I'm so sad that you ended up in the ER with serious complications. Kidney function is no joke! You said that you are scared and unsure what to do. What has you scared? What are you unsure about? I ask that you ponder those two questions and get back to me. I hope you've gone back to basics, eating mostly protein and some fruits & vegetables. I really hope you're taking a good vitamin daily. I also hope you're getting plenty of fluids. With those things in place, I think you'll set yourself up for success. Be kind to yourself, please. Let's talk about what you're doing right, not what you did wrong. This could be a new starting point for you, a fresh beginning. Let's take advantage of it! I'll look forward to hearing your response on those two questions and hopefully be someone on which you can lean. You are not alone. Take care of you.
  25. Well, if you live with your husband, then he needs to know you had a procedure. This is because of the possibility of complications. Now, whether he knows what type of procedure you had... that is up to you. But at least he needs to know you had abdominal surgery so he could inform the doctor if you are too sick to talk. I guess you could write VSG or RNY on your belly with sharpie, and that way you are labeled! Lol!
