  1. Stay Safe and Hopefully Well/Healthy Everyone! Hi, I got the Loop Duodenal Switch almost a year ago, done June 2019. Please, if you post, say the surgery without abbreviating it, as I am not familiar with the initials/abbreviations of the surgeries, unless you want to post a list that would be appreciated too. I wanted to know if you ever experienced losing weight too fast. If so, did it ever slow down, or did you gain it back? I have been told that I might have to have revision surgery because I am losing at the same rate as when I first got surgery, which will be a year ago in June. I don't want another surgery, as it was pure hell the days and weeks after surgery, for multiple reasons. I was told that I could go as low as 95 lbs, but I am already at 134 now, supposedly one will slow down weight-loss once they have reached 50% of weight-loss or something to that degree for the Duodenal Switch Loop. I am just curious as to if you wouldn't mind sharing what your weight-loss journey has been like if it has been more than 1 year and especially if it has been more than 2 years. Were there any concerns over losing too fast? If so, what helped without a revision surgery? I have to say at one point weight-loss was fast, I was able to slow it down after I was told that I would need revision surgery after the 1 year mark, mostly by food journaling. This COVID-19 ridiculousness got me off track again of losing slowly even though I went back to journaling. I hate to say this but with my own journey, Although I start off by listening, I find that some of what a nurse/Dr. says sometimes is crap, so I want to make sure that the talk of me needing revision surgery is not more, crAp. What have you done, Help! I know that it may seem like a ridiculous thing to be alarmed about but I really can’t handle another surgery so I would like to know if this has happened to anyone else and what worked for you besides revision surgery. Thanks!
  2. I'm not quite 3 months out of my surgery which is the Loop Duodenal Switch, same as you, but a potential revision is something I was worried about when I agreed to this surgery because I only know two people who got this surgery and BOTH needed revisions. 1. because he got a really bad malnutrition issue so they had to fix him back so it was essentially just the sleeve now (though his was, admittedly the DS not the Loop) and 2. because she went from being over 400 pounds to being 95 pounds in two years! She's 5'5. After her revision she's at a much healthier 123 now. She had originally had the Loop. I, like yourself, very much do not want to go through a revision, but I figure if it happens then they'd just be fixing my intestines so the whole 'phases' wouldn't be necessary. I mean yeah, you'd have to eat lighter meals for a while, but they wouldn't be messing with your stomach for the revision so it's why I still went with the Loop. I won't like it if I have to eventually have a revision, but both of theirs happened in the second year so I'm not going to stress until then. Likely your weight loss will slow down eventually. You just still have some more to lose. For your height you could technically get down to 92 pounds and still be considered in the normal range. And if you don't like what the doctor says... get a second opinion. Especially if it's a surgery you don't want!
  3. Thanks Kahleen so much. Its not about demanding the attending doctor because I feel like I deserve special treatment. It is unprofessional not to guarantee an opportunity to meet a patient whose body you already operated on! I'm going to forget the disrespect in not meeting him BEFORE surgery. Yes Yes The VA Medical offer it to veterans that've been receiving their primary health care from them for at least a year. Then you can ask your PCP about their MOVE program or he/she may offer u info on it. It's a weight loss program. I did it for 3 months then ask their nutritionist info on their Bariatric Program. She scheduled u for a seminar. Their u get more info and the Bariatric coordinator contact info. One u loose your 15% she schedule a psych eval, once u pass a consult with the surgeon, or for me the PA, lol.
  4. Congratulations on your retirement, weight loss and the other changes you are making for 2016. I'm with you on not making resolutions. JUST DO IT! That's what I say. (P.S: I resolve not to resolve- is that a resolution?) Happy 2016

    Another fill

I went for my 2nd fill yesterday. I had no restriction whatsoever and was starting to gain. Anyway, he unfilled me (I guess he always does that before a new fill) and I only had .5cc in my 4 cc band. He said he put over .75 in at the last fill and is not sure what happened to the rest??????? He put 1.5 in yesterday and honestly I don't feel a bit different. Some people say it takes a few days to feel a fill? I can't imagine why that is.

    Diets tried roll call!

I never had to do these silly diets before (no offense), but once I was over 40 I could just not drop the weight by counting calories alone. I had a long checklist on my shrink eval: eDiets Revival soy bars Sensa Green coffee Bean capsules Full Bar,. Full Bar Gummies, Full Bar gum

    getting back on track

I'm sorry to hear about all that you have been going through. I know for me emotional eating is my worst! When I am stressing big time I tend to lose weight, when I went through my divorce pre-band I lost 45 pounds. (but I also broke my foot and had to hop around for 2 months on crutches! That's a work out let me tell you!) My best suggestion to you is to give yourself some TLC. Go back to band basics like when you first were banded. Try the 5 day pouch test/reset to start. You can find it in posts on the site and online as well. Find a doctor that you like as your PCP let them know your banded, then find a bariatric doctor and make an appointment. Don't let your insurance company tell you no! It's all in the way visits are billed and if your having an issue, then it should be covered. Best of luck to you, sounds like things are going in a better direction for you already!

    Scared and need advice

I am on puréed foods and my plan suggests keeping away from starchy carbs . I am so afraid of feeling sick or stuck I might be being too careful. I have added flavorless Protein powder to Soups and oatmeal and that is working well for me as we'll. I've not been hungry and I feel I can eat more than I do but my nutritionist told me that just because I can doesn't mean I should. This is the reason I've gained weight to begin with I figure. Like I can eat ice cream today but I shouldn't if I want my weight loss to be most successful. My goal is to be a model patient and stay respectful and slightly fearful of the band but not experience it's wrath!

    A Couple of questions.

I will give you the opposite side since I see my clinic as more conservative than most I see here. We are told that we should ALWAYS follow the 30/30/30 rule. That rule is no drinking 30 minutes before eating, chew every bite 30 times, and no drinking for 30 minutes after finishing eating. Drinking while eating allows you to eat more since it pushes the food through your pouch. Stopping drinking and waiting to drink is making use of the tool that RNY is. Not following his rule most believe will lead to weight gain over time. As for eating carbs... We should always eat our Protein first. We must also make our protein goal. Once those are met adding in some carbs is fine. I have had potatoes, rice, crackers, and bread. The one thing that my NUT told me I should not go back to is Cereal for Breakfast. I always enjoyed oatmeal for breakfast. There is simply not enough protein in any of the cereals to make the daily protein goal. It's different for each of us, but I hope this helps. Good luck!!

It is so easy to stumble

My best advice is to talk to them. Tell them you are having a hard time and you'd appreciate that they remove the junk food or make sure it's away from you. Then start back on the Vitamins and Protein shakes. Focus on that. Once you've been doing that, use this experience to gain some self control. Junk food will be constantly around us and you will be happier if you can go to a birthday party and refuse cake and be totally happy about it then sit around with the feeling "I shouldn't have done that" or "one piece won't hurt". The first couple months I had all junk food out of my house, now it's here but I've gain self control I can sit with my family while they eat cake, Cookies, chips, candy and I'm not even bothered by it. Good luck and I really hope you get back on track!!! HW: 331 SW: 11/26/12 319lbs CW: 229 04/23/13 GW: 157

    Work Out Routine!

I think everyone is different and it is important to start with where you are. To be fit, my understanding is that : aerobic capacity, strength, endurance, balance, and flexibility are all important. (I am not an expert so may be leaving something out). For me, I prefer Water exercise: swimming laps, water aerobics, water weights, and stretching. It might be a good idea to talk with a trainer or other fitness professional for an assessment of where you are and to talk about your goals.

    Should I be this hungry?

Just my experience, after a year with the band I averaged 1 lb. per week. Some weeks were 2-3 lbs.--others none, but on average 1 per. I think it depends a lot on starting weight. My doc said at first 5-6 lbs. per month for me then later 3-4 per month as I get closer to goal. Denise

    Should I be this hungry?

Once you make the transition from your mushy foods to solid foods again the hunger should go away especially if you are eating properly. Your weight loss will stall for a bit. Make sure you get lots of Protein. Then after the protein make sure you eat your veggies and then after veggies and protein add in the other stuff.

    One week tomorrow!

I had surgery May 15, and I'm down 5lbs (likely just the weight of my stomach) but down 17lbs since starting Pre op!! Yeah!!! We're doin this thang!!! I was really afraid this would be another big diet fail, but praying this is the last time I will EVER be this weight again!!
  18. I am two months post op. At the beginning, I expected to have changes with my taste buds. As time goes on, the less I like the taste of anything. I am forcing myself to try and eat something for lunch and dinner. Nothing tastes good. I know this makes it easier to lose weight, but I am worried about my health. I have recently noticed that I am having extreme dizzy spells. Has anyone else had this problem with food? With time will food start to taste decent? Thanks for your help!

    Not losing weight

I'm 4 weeks post RNY today. As above if unsure ask your dietitian or doctor, but some ideas: I'd say log your food and fluid intake to make sure you're taking in enough fluid and so that you know what your calorie intake is. My dietitian told me about a patient who had complained he wasn't losing weight during the liquid part of the diet and when she delved into it, he was liquidising mars bars. I doubt you're doing this but always worth recording your intake I'd say? I've always been told by doctors that building muscle can add weight (or mean that you don't lose weight), so maybe your exercise regime is building muscle at the expense of a weight loss? I haven't experienced a stall (yet!) but many people say they do have this at about 3 weeks? Only other things I can think of would be constipation or fluid retention? Good luck!

I had surgery on July 22, 2013 and have gone from a 18-20W to a regular and I still have my stomach. Why rush? We did not gain the weight over night it won't come off over night. Feeling sexy is a mind set that shows in the look. Work on your 25 pounds and stay positive.

West Australians and lap - band

I am very embarrassed to say that I weighed myself on my birthday (20th January) and I was 132kg. Today I am 89kg so I feel much better. I look everything and compare it to how much weight I have lost eg: 20 2kg bags of sugar. I am amazed at how I could have dragged that much around. I still have no idea what size I am and go straight for the larger size it hasnt really sunk in yet. I have never been happier though. My sister asked me what was the down side of banding and I really couldnt come up with any really good reasons.

    UPDATE and Question!!!

Congratulations on both your weight loss and your babies! It does take most people multiple people to reach the Green Zone. I was banded in January 2012 and didn't finally reach it until May 2012. But, please keep in mind that food isn't supposed to sit above your band and is supposed to pass through almost immediately (less than a minute). So, don't use that as a gauge for whether or not you need another fill. Also, if you're eating until you're "full" you're likely eating too much. With the band and the Green Zone, it's all about hunger control. Have a look at this link, I think it'll help: http://drsimpson.net/fills/Lap-band-eating/lap-band-not-restriction/lap-band-and-restriction.html You're doing great!
