Awful doctor experience
Sunnyway replied to stillundecided44's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I will agree with the others your options are to a) accept the surgeon's social awkwardness/rudeness if the other clinic members are supportive, or b) find a different surgeon/clinic. In your shoes I would probably look for another surgeon/clinic. I do want to point out that the RNY bypass surgery is generally accepted to be more effective than VSG. RNY results in greater weight loss, resolves heartburn/GERD, and resolves, improves, or prevents Diabetes 2. Some say VSG is a "more invasive" surgery, but frankly, removing 80% of your stomach is pretty damn invasive. With RNY bypass the stomach is separated but not removed. Both are performed laparoscopically. The VSG is easier and quicker for the surgeon. However, a lot of VSG patients have to have revision to RNY later. -
I use Unjury in my rotation too. I love the strawberry and I actually mix it with around 10 oz of the crystal light lemonade and have a strawberry lemonade. IT IS DELICIOUS! I use more lemonade to thin it out so it doesn't even have the shake thickness. Doesn't even taste like a shake, just like I am drinking a strawberry lemonade drink with bonus protein!

Agree with everything @kcuster83 said above. I love Crystal Light, but had to stay away the first few days after surgery. It was just too harsh immediately after surgery, but a week or two in it was totally fine. You may need to experiment. I wound up drinking a lot of warm bone broth, which was great because it has more protein than regular broth, felt nice in my tummy, and also counted for fluid. I also used to love all the Premier Protein shakes, and post op I hated everything except the Vanilla which was tolerable. The Caffe Latte is also delicious but I couldn't drink it for the first 6 months because of the caffeine. I switched to Unjury protein powders in soy milk. Yum.

Hello! Yes, people take collagen PO. I don't know if they do it day 1 or wait a little bit. Someone else might know, as I don't take it. Or, you could always double check with your team to see what they say about it. I can't imagine it being an issue. I wouldn't stock up on too much pre-op because sometimes people taste change drastically (temporarily or permanently). I used to LOVE the chocolate peanut butter premier protein shakes pre-op and I can't stand them now. They taste like pure chemicals to me. Otherwise I haven't noticed huge changes, that was the big one I noticed. Yes, you can you flavor packets (crystal light) in your water. I was even given it in the hospital. But, I couldn't handle it the first few days. They were too "intense" for me and the super strong citrus flavoring was harsh. I have always thought they are a little intense for me (even before surgery) so I always use more water or less of the flavor than recommended and it is good for me. I am huge water drinker (pre and post op) so I have no problem drinking plain water and usually prefer it. Some people struggle with it post-op and try it at different temperatures until they find what works best for them. Good luck on your surgery, GETTING CLOSE!!

Good morning! My surgery date is on the 21st and I’m trying to be prepared. I have all my Premiere Protein shakes. For water can we use crystal light? I also bought Premier protein bottles of water? Does anyone use collagen in their water? I take regularly now and it has protein so wonder if it’s an option to add PO. Thank you for any feedback it’s a week and I feel like everything is running through my head to be prepared. Any PO additional things you know of that maybe I’m just forgetting. Thank you! Good luck on your journey !

October 2022 surgery support

if you still have issues with dehydration, I recommend IV therapy. It's not cheap- roughly 80-200 depending on where you go, but ive heard a lot of people who have issues with water in the beginning use IV hydration as an option. I'm not sure where you live, but a lot of larger cities have one in the area. -
I'm 3 days post op. The only thing that hurts is the shoulders. I move around, I drink water, I try to get my protein, my stomach is sore but isn't unbearable. The thing that is unbearable is my shoulders. If it's not the right it's the left or is both. What are some things that helped this and when does it stop?? Hubby and I eat out a lot. I usually make something on Sunday that will last 2-3 days and we'll alternate that with take out. Of course, I eat much differently than I used to. In the liquid stages, Panera was my best friend. Their tomato soup is wonderful. I can still go to every single fast food place we used to, I just opt for better foods in much smaller portions. The other night we got Outback and I had about a 1/3 of a steak along with two small bites of mashed potatoes. Chick-fil-a grilled filets or nuggets are a favorite! I watch my sodium intake otherwise and track everything closely to make sure I'm not going over my fat limits, but I just don't eat a bun or bread with anything and choose high protein options.

Everything about this post seems off. First of all, no one requires a 6-week liquid only diet. It's a day or two at most of clear liquids, then a week or two of full liquids (protein shakes, strained full-thickness soups), then pureed food, and a month later you are eating regular food (slowly, small amounts, chewing carefully, but regular food). I know most GI specialists will have their own version of the post-ESG diet progression, but the variations are not that huge. How do I know this? Because I researched almost all of them before deciding who would perform mine! I made sure I understood the assignment, as the kids say. Second, OP said: "I started at 251 post-colonoscopy-cleanse (since they have to remove all of everything in your gut before doing the procedure)" and "251 is the post cleanse weight, meaning I had everything purged from my system to prep for surgery." WHAT? NO. ESG is an upper GI endoscopic procedure. The doctor enters through your mouth. This has nothing whatsoever to do with your lower GI. All I had to do is one day of clear liquids to make sure the stomach was empty before they go in to stitch it into a sleeve. I seriously doubt OP had an ESG. Or if she did, it was by some hack who did not know what they were doing. Good grief. -
I had VSG revision to bypass due to gerd over a year ago, but my experience with the VSG and restriction for 6 to 7 years was the following: I didn't have alot of restriction either but had enough to be successful. With meat, about 3 ounces. Everything else about 1 cup. The great thing is... Even years out, I was never able to truly "pig out" again. If and when I ate too much, my heart would pound like crazy. I did have to work to stay away from slider foods since the end result of that is very little restriction. As long as you don't get gerd, and you eat protein first, it is a wonderful tool for weightloss and lifetime restriction but it takes work and commitment.

I had a huge problem early on with nausea and vomiting. I had GERD at night, and it took about 6 months to find the right medication and dosage for me. It took me a while to find the right time in the day to take my doses for my tablets. I take one dose at 4pm and don't eat for 1 hour before and 2 hours after. I take my second dose at midnight and have nothing for 1 hour before and never eat till my breakfast protein yogurt and milky coffee. If my mouth waters I have eaten something my stomach doesn't want yet, usually chicken. I will have to vomit saliva and foam. I also had to take vitamins without any iron as the iron made me nauseous too The nasty taste disappeared when I could eat better I hope you get this sorted quicker than I did, it makes you so weak eating so little

what surprised you?

Sometimes restriction takes a bit of time to feel. Due to cut nerves. But I get what you're saying. For me, it depends on the foods that I eat, some offer more restriction than others. Like grilled chicken, denser proteins offer more restriction than say, Greek yogurt or crockpot shredded chicken. The bypass is just a tool, and it will not do all of the work for us, which I have to be mindful of now because when I had a lap band, that thing was so restrictive that almost everything got stuck and felt dense. So when you can, choose denser proteins and weigh/measure your food so your stomach and brain learns what your new "full" feels like. I didn't lose my hunger either like a lot of people do. And I work out and lift weights and that has always made me hungrier, especially when I started weights again at 6 weeks post op. I never experienced nausea, but I know acid can cause nausea. Are you on an acid reducer? -
Low fat mayo is a solid substitute but I really like greek yogurt & cottage cheese (with seasoning) as a substitute for Mayo or any creamy condiment. Adds a nice amount of protein too!

Awful doctor experience

I seriously couldn’t have said it better than sleevemealone. Or even as good. I’m am glad you have other options and are willing to take the next step towards finding YOUR new surgeon. This is your journey and you deserve a team you trust and respect at the very least, hopefully they will be so much more. -

Thank you for responding! I do believe there are more options for the area I live, so I think I’ll look into other offices. This experience just completely wrecked my brain because I went into it so optimistic. Hopefully the other practices have better bedside manners 😕 -

Oh goodness, I'm so sorry you had such a terrible experience. Its so disheartening when you finally work up the courage to take that first step and get met with such an uncaring provider. Your feelings are completely valid, I'm sure I'd have felt the exact same way. Do you have the option of seeking out a different provider? I know in some areas options can be limited, but if there is another surgeon you can see I would definitely recommend trying another one. You deserve a provider you can trust to hear you and support you, that you feel safe with. If another surgeon isn't an option, maybe stay the course for now and see what the other staff is like? From my experience, you'll deal more with the office staff, dietician, etc. than the surgeon directly. So if the rest of the staff is amazing, perhaps you can lean on them for your primary support? -
Hello everyone! I’m new to the site! Just had my initial consultation appointment today with a weight loss surgeon. When he walked into the room, his first comment was, “Hi I’m going to make you mad first. How did you get this big at 34?” For some context, I’m 5’10, 350lbs….size 28. I’m not going to lie, I didn’t know how to answer the question besides saying, “food”. Then when it got to the questions portion of the consult, I had just begun asking my question (didn’t even get to get the whole question out) before he cut over me and began giving an answer which wasn’t even remotely related to the question I was about to ask. So I waited for him to finish, to which I started to ask again and he once again cut me off. He also kept pushing for the bypass option, and when I finally asked my question about vsg, he quickly turned that option down. Now I’m just rethinking the whole thing because it made me feel invisible, and just awful. Has anyone else had a similar experience, or maybe some words of encouragement? It took a lot for me to make this first step, and now I’m completely discouraged.

6 weeks post op ZERO WEIGHT LOSS AND DEPRESSED
crazycatladycanada replied to crazycatladycanada's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have lost nothing.m since week one. That’s seven weeks of no loss. Or I should say one pound. my surgeon and dietician in Mexico literally gave me no information so I had to get a dietician here and see my doctors here in canada. So I’m following what my dietician in canada says. And she was the one that said the 1200 cals a day. I also have to be mindful on the amount of protein because it does affect my kidneys I’ve already been into the hospital for a week two as mentioned above and at this point it’s NOT normal according to my doctor and my dietician….which is what I expected them to say considering three other siblings had it and have a completely different experience than mine. I went for a CT scan last night so now we wait for results sometime this week. absolutely stalls are normal but not from the beginning and not seven weeks at the very beginning of no loss. As mentioned in this post thread my initial weight loss was most likely all water. I do hope everything start sorting itself out soon because I’m kind of thinking if I’m not getting any results after all of this hard work I might as well just eat what I want since I’m not loosing anyways. -
6 weeks post op ZERO WEIGHT LOSS AND DEPRESSED
ShoppGirl replied to crazycatladycanada's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yea. Something is definitely not right. Looking at carbs and stuff in the mean time may not be a bad idea if you aren’t already considering them (if nothing else but to learn how while you have the nutritionist available to teach you) but I admit I didn’t pay too much attention to them since my diet was protein focused and I still lost the majority of my weight by just reducing calories. Now I wish I had learned a bit more about the specifics now that I am on maintenance since I am learning that calories are definitely not created equal. I am going to go back to the nutritionist before I gain too much back. -

I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ replied to Shey Ronix's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
This is the exact thing that caused the band to damage my esophagus. I now have permanent esophageal damage because the lap band was so unnatural and damaging. For the life of me, I do not understand why surgeons are still placing lap bands. They pose more harm than good imo. If you're having difficulties with your band, consider a revision! There's better options available now. My bypass feels sooo natural compared to the lap band. I hope this resolves for you soon. Best wishes. -
I have been having bad migraines lately. I think its due to the protein shakes. I purchased clear protein shakes with stevia for after my surgery (later today) but I am worried. What meds are you on, if you don't mind me asking? And how did you do with the protein drinks? Scared but excited.

yea, I was being lazy and didn't type "squash" I love spaghetti squash but it gets a little watery, so adding something to thicken and cream it up is a great idea and like you said ups the protein! I will definitely be trying this! Thanks! -

Spaghetti squash and yes! I find it delicious that way. It ups protein and adds the creamy factor without heavy cream for less calories- 1/2 cup fat free cottage cheese is 80 calories and 13g protein where 2tbsp heavy cream is 100 calories and no protein. -
Congratulations on your weight loss so far. You may not be at your goal but what you have done is a great achievement. The truth is not everyone reaches their goal. This may be the weight your body is happiest at - your new set point. Or your rate of loss could have just slowed right down. Ensuring you get in all your protein, water & other nutrients is vital & not doing so maybe compromising your loss. You just have to establish those better habits around eating & drinking to meet your goals. If you eat your protein first you should meet your goal without too much difficulty. Protein first, then vegetables & then only carbs if you are able. Sometimes all I’d eat was the protein component. Still do sometimes. And make any snacks you eat protein rich too. Keep fluids by your side all the time. I drink during the night, in the car as I’m driving, etc. I have habits like get in the car drink. Get out of the car drink. Red light drink. You can do this if you use public transport too. Remember all fluids count not just water. This far along you probably don’t need to be waiting 30 minutes between eating & drinking. Reduce the time you wait to a time frame you feel comfortable with & doesn’t compromise being able to consume the food you need. In my second year I only needed to wait about 10/15 minutes. Now I wait about 5 but can only take one large mouthful at a time - 2 swallows - any more is uncomfortable.
