  1. I was sleeved 5-13-13 so I am new to all of this. I feel stupid because I don't understand how much I should be taking in at one time. I understand sips and if I go to fast it hurts. How long should it take me to drink a cup of broth?? Is it normal for me to drink a cup (8oz) in one setting? Broth, tea, and flavored water go down well and I can do a cup fairly quick. Not that it's a race, but I have always drank fast. I don't pay attention and next thing I know I'm done. Now my protein shakes are not so easy and my unjury chicken soup is the same. It has to be small sips and not to quick or I get the sudden knot of pain between my boobs at the top of my stomach. Just the smallest sip gives me that pain at times. I try to get my protein in and my shakes are 11oz and out of habit try all in one setting.... I feel broken because I can take a large amount of other liquids. I asked my husband "what if my sleeve is bigger than it should be" I feel that I don't know when to stop and what if I stretch my sleeve. I don't know what is enough and i try to force my 64 liquid and 60 protein. I do fine with Popsicles, but Jello was extremely painful after each bite. I call it gas pains, but not really sure what it is. I go Monday for my 1 week follow up.
  2. Hi, everyone. I'm a newbie who has been lurking on the forums for the past month or so. You all are amazing and I am so grateful for your candid comments and generosity of information. I have my first seminar next week so I am trying to get my ducks in a row. My insurance does cover banding so I am very fortunate (horizon bc in nj). However, I am a little concerned about whether my lack of medical treatment records might impact the insurance decision. I do not have pcp, haven't seen a doctor in a number of years. I dont have anything "official" documenting my weight and weight loss efforts. I have a few years of cardiovascular screening records, including my weight, from my job. Do you think i can use that proof? I guess I've benn avoiding medical testing and treatment all these years because I just didn't want the doctors to make me feel any worse than I already felt. Not sure if anyone else has been through this. Thanks for any help.
  3. From the album: before

today is my one month post op anniversary! while i have had stalls in the actual weight loss, i have seen changes in the way my clothing fits!! YAY
  4. I almost never feel a fill until 5-7 days after it happens. Sounds weird, but it takes mine a while to kick in! Sounds like you should go back to your reg doc. Why the long wait for a fill? That sounds really crazy! My doc always gets you in within the week you call! Anyone else around you who does fills?
  5. I was really scared to tell my PCP... I think it was just because I was so scared about the surgery I didn't think I could handle any negativity. I also figured there would be some kind of bias or stereotyping regarding mexico. finally I remembered that I'm a grown up and I choose who my doctor is. If I was unhappy with her response I could always get another doctor. I told her the week before and she was great. she said she had several patients that had done the same thing and she felt it was a great option. She's seen me for a few little things since.... some acid problems... checked my incisions etc... She'll do my 3 month labs. At the end of the day we all need a doctor who is supportive and helpful... if yours isn't I would consider getting a new one.

    Temptation

I know what you mean!! I didn't do chicken broth pre op...because I knew I'd HAVE to do it post op and didn't want to be burnt out on it. Right now, I love it. and Instead pre op...I did shakes after shakes after shakes. Peanut Butter banana smoothies with Protein are SO FILLING and they are what got me through...occasionally, i had a cucumber with chili y limon...but i shouldnt have. alot of it is mental too. keep ur mind busy. watch Netflix. not TV because TV has so many BOMB food commercials...ugh. Thank you. My surgery is sept 21 Sent from my SM-G900T using Tapatalk You're welcome! The date will be here before u know it. Be strong. ☺So you slipped up on your two week post op diet. I'm hungry but I had a very minor slip and I felt guilty Sent from my SM-G900T using Tapatalk Yes. I did. Not just once either. My bday was Aug 29. I went to olive garden. HORRIBLE. I know. But I'm VERY thankful all came out ok and that I haven't done or ate anything I shouldn't as of now. I know the guilt you speak of too. Lol....lots of things in common.

    Depression post surgery

I've had a couple of operations, not including my upcoming WLS next week, and always find myself a bit out of sorts for at least a week after surgery. Here's what I attribute the depression to: a. You've just had surgery--your body has been through a huge workout, so to speak. You've had medications, been put under, have had pain meds, blood thinners, etc. b. The whole ordeal is stressful: hospitals, machines, monitors, etc. c. You are in pain or discomfort. d. Your daily routine is out of whack. e. You may need help with things. f. You don't feel like yourself. ...and a lot of other immediate changes. If you think about it, it all makes sense that you would be a little depressed, or at least a little emotional. I know I'm always a little down in the dumps after a procedure..and it's probably normal.

    weight gain

I feel your pain, but I can top your 3 lbs gained in 3 weeks. I have gained that much OVERNIGHT. During my weight loss phase, I never lost weight at a steady rate. I lost some, lost some more, gained some, lost some, and so on. Food isn't the only thing that affects body weight; not all of that is within your control. Try not to let your scale mess with your head. You're the boss: put that scale in its place. Like, locked in the trunk of your car.

    First Ride!

I'm new to this, haven't even had my first fill yet. But I do know everyones weight loss is different. And on average with the band you are to loose 1-2 pounds a week, so if you do the math 20 pounds is right there. I would suggest you discuss with your nutrionist what you are eating to make sure you are getting in the right amounts of protein, calories, etc. Good luck.

    First Ride!

I went for my first ride since being banded and did it feel great! Living in MI the riding season is short and it sure was hard to give up 3 weeks of riding.

    Banded and home

I just wanted to share my banding experience with everyone too. I was banded on Tuesday morning. I got up at 5 a.m because I could not sleep. I arrived at the hosptial at 6:30 and the nurse greeted me in a cheerful voice and told me to go use the bathroom then have a seat in the lobby area. My husband accompanied me and we sat for about 20 minutes before we were called to a room. Once I was in the room, I was given the stockings and a gown to put on. One of the nurses came in and started my iv. she was very nice and chatted about how busy the shortstay was as compared to the emergency room. She really made me feel relaxed. Approximately 10 minutes later, I was taken to a room and one of the nurses gave me a "party hat" to put on. He told me that I could not go to the party without it. He was so funny. I met the guy who was going to administer my anethesia(sp) and he told me no worries. O.K. I can go with that. I was then rolled to the operating room and told to move over onto another bed. One of the nurses told me that she was going to put a oxygen mask on my face and I comment "Good night". I already knew it was going to be lights out. I awoke in a cold room and someone was calling my name. I answered and he told me that it took me a long time to wake up and I remember telling him "I was dreaming and you woke me up". He laughed and asked me if I was ready to be taken to my room. I told him yes. He asked me if I wanted anything for pain and I said yes. I was not in pain, but if he was offering.... I arrived in my room and the nurses were so nice. I had minimal pain except for the gas that insisted on running through my upper chest area. I got up and walked it down to the lower part of my stomach I guess. I had anticipated a lot of gas in my shoulders and back. But I did not have that. I still have gas pains in my stomach but they are not as bad as I had thought. I did get up to walk one time during the night and I thought I was going to throw up but the nurse hurried me back to bed. This experience was not as bad as I had read on some posts. I am now back at home after spending the night in the hospital(I recommend it). I feel fine except for the soreness where my port is, but as long as I am not twisting or turning too much, it is fine. I think my challenge is going to be the two weeks on the liquid diet phase. I hope those of you who are scheduled to be banded, will have as good of an experience as I did.
  12. Have you tried Syntrax Nectar juice flavored shakes? Have you tried Unjury chicken broth? I had the same problem after surgery. I found that every protein drink that tasted milky made me very nauseous. I can mix milk into foods haven't tried to drink it by itself yet.. I am 12 weeks post op. One thing that helped was getting some sublingual Zofran which helps with nausea and taking that. I also went to vitalady.com and bought various samples of the juice Syntrax to try and found ones I liked much better. I knew I needed to get the protein drinks in and needed something I could tolerate that wouldn't make me nauseous. I still deal with nausea with foods and use Zofran frequently. I really like the unjury chicken broth one. I like to put it in a cup for something warm to drink.
  13. Lol. I think surgery just "agrees" with me and I probably have a very high tolerance for pain. Was back to work 2 weeks after having two vertebrae in my neck fused. Was skiing by 3 months. Just last month I Had my gallbladder removed. Surgery at 8:30, discharged at 12:30, stopped at the grocery store and cleaned the house for 3 hours when I got home. My medicine cabinet is packed with expired pain meds I've never needed to take. I walked around with a broken back for 3 days before going to the doctor back when I was in college. Dunno but definitely not Wonder Woman.....my boobs are way too droopy!
  14. By about a week post op you will feel pretty good. Good luck to both of you!

    Surgery on 8/8!

So excited for you! I was sleeved three weeks ago and recovery had been easy. I drank tons of Water and drank Protein as directed the first week, which I believe helped me to heal so well. Be sure to listen to your body as we all react differently and be prepared for a shot emotional crash similar to buyer's remorse. The people on Bariatricpal are nothing short of amazing and you will find what you need in all phases of your journey. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

  17. Hi all, I was wondering if there are sleevers out there who flew to mexico/ are flying to Mexico from another country other than the States? I'm having my surgery with Dr Garcia in TJ and I'm flying from New Zealand to San Diego and getting picked up to cross the border. I booked my flights/applied for visa already and I'm just wondering what people went through as they went through customs/border. Can I openly tell them about my surgery? Will it matter if I'm going to be picked up from San Diego? My mother will be coming with me and we want to stay an extra week in San Diego post operation just to make a mini holiday out of it. Any comments/suggestions will be greatly appreciated thank you!
  18. I don't think you will have any problem at all and honestly when i went to Mexico for my surgery a few weeks ago, they don't even stop you...they just wave you in. It's getting back into the states that takes time. Just out of curiosity...how come you didn't just fly into TJ?

Last week before pre op diet

I was more excited than nervous Bc I knew this was leading up to the new me. Also, if I'm not compliant with a 2 week diet, how can I be compliant with an entire lifestyle change? You can do this. Sure, it sucks. It's no fun. But it is doable.

    1st week weight loss amount

Yes, it is. I had similar results in their first 3 weeks. After you get off the liquid /pureed stage it slows down.
  21. Had surgery on 6th and in first week I'm down 20 week and a half 30 started at 398 is this normal for heavier guys

    Headaches and low blood sugar

@pinknova I didn’t experience headaches but did have low blood sugar causing dizziness, nausea and vomiting. I’d talk to your surgeon. Mine was great and helped me modify what I’m taking in and I no longer am having that problem and my sugar is staying around 80. My surgeon told me that some people are very sensitive to ketosis and suggested I drink a little juice or have something with natural sugar several times a day. I avoid any processed sugar still. But will do a all natural yogurt popsicle, Greek yogurt - I can only eat a few teaspoons at a time but it really seems to help, organic apple juice. Also, when going out I carry a few peppermints in my purse, the ones that dissolve quickly on your tongue. Took me what seemed like forever to figure out what was going on. Wishing you all the best in your journey.. also adding this small bit of natural sugar has not seemed to impact my weight loss I’m down 20 pounds since surgery and had surgery exactly 2 weeks ago today.
  24. So I started my weight loss journey years ago but never thought about wls. I decided last year that wls was probably my best bet. So on my oldest son bday, April, I started my supervised 6 month diet. I went through all the testing, pych eval, nut appt and meet with my suregon twice. I have jumped through hoops to get here and now its only a week away. Im scheduled for preop appt on 2/12 and surgery on 2/13. My preop diet has been hard cause I still have a husband and three lil children to cook three square meals a day for but I haven't cheated and I'm hanging in there. Im getting super nervous as they days pass.

    Sometimes I get so JEALOUS....

The average weight loss is 1-2 lbs a week and you're averaging better than that. Why would you be jealous? It's better to concentrate on your progress and following your prescribed plan than to compare yourself to others. You're a success!
