Breakfast ideas that don't involve EGGS!
ParrotheadCathy replied to thecooley's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I don't like "regular" yogurt but I LOVE Greek yogurt with honey. Another poster on this site suggested it to me. I was very leary because I really, really don't like yogurt but she promised me it was different. I tried a version that was vanilla flavored and that went right in the trash, LOL. But the honey was fantastic. I buy Greek Gods Greek Yogurt with Honey at Kroger. But Fage and Chobani are two other brands and I think WalMart carries one or both of those. Grits. yeah, I'm a Southern girl alright! I cook them in the microwave, add a little Promise "margarine" and a little bit of shredded low fat cheese and really enjoy that. -

Don't worry about the carbs in oatmeal. Oatmeal has a low glycemic index along with being high in fiber, so it's a "good" carb. On top of that, it tends to be filling and stays filling for a while. Just watch out for the flavored kind with lots of added sugar, I suggest getting plain and flavoring it yourself, I keep a shaker of cinnamon/Splenda blend just for oatmeal and greek yogurt. -

I too really like the Greek Yogurt..I use the Chobani brand... I really like the Peach one the best... I buy it at my grocery store, but I have never seen it at my Walmart.... you say you don't like yogurt, try the Greek Yogurt, it is thicker then the regular yogurt, so you might find that you like it. -

Hi linky, how you going? back home 5 days ago!!! Feeling really good an normal!!! Lost 10kg so far and happy about it!! Still on liquid diet , Protein shakes, optislim Soup ( can only have 1/8 a day!) , plain yogurt ( 1/8 a day) and 1 optislim shake a day. Taking all my Vitamins too... Water not doing so well 600ml a day!!!! I'm 3 weeks out today, my doctor want me on liquid for 4 weeks then gradually start eating food.., I'm scared to eat any thing...I'm enjoying my liquids!!! How you going Lincky? What's your progress ? How is your good intake? Are you able to eat much? -
hey shelly, i'm impressed that you're getting so much Protein in so soon. i'm still on Clear Liquids, and there's only so much broth and protein Water i can have. i get really tired in the afternoons but i hope that will change once i start having Soups, Protein shakes and yogurt in the next couple of days. the first few days were fairly tolerable... not too much shoulder pain or gas. but today, i feel so gassy and my stomach has gotten really bloated. thankfully i still have little shoulder pain! the gas and bloating makes me feel like i'm pregnant. walking and gas x aren't helping like they used to. i hope this will pass soon!!!

An anyone recommend to me a good, easily tolerable( taste and texture ) unflavored protien powder that I can add to things like soups and yogurts to increase my intake? There are so many, but they are so expensive and I'm afraid to spend the money and I will hate it!

I give in to it, or I find a lower calorie version. Like a piece of sugar free chocolate, or frozen yogurt instead of candy and ice cream. But honestly to me, when I find out how many calories are in what I want I usually don't want it anymore haha. Luckily for me, in LA, every chain food joint, coffee shop, and restaurant has to post the calories on the menu. When you find out there are 562 calories in a serving of ranch dressing at Mimi's Cafe, you won't eat it! Or I don't feel guilty about ONE piece of pizza, or a small slice of cake. Before it would of been 5 pieces of pizza, or 2 cupcakes..

Designer whey - Natural flavor from Vitamin Shoppe is pretty flavorless. Keep in mind, even the flavorless ones are a powder and that in it's self will change the flavor of your yogurt or Soup to some degree. You just have to mix it really well too and I wouldn't use more than a couple spoonfuls. (I tried a whole scoop in some mashed potatoes...tasted fine but had weird texture.

Was going to suggest this. My 2nd week post, full liquids, I made something similar. 1/2 cup FF Greek Yogurt scoop of vanilla protein powder and added water until I got the consistensy I wanted. Delic!!! The water counts towards intake as well as the protein from yogurt and powder.

Best Fast Food Bets after Bariatric Surgery
Alex Brecher posted a magazine article in Food & Nutrition
Consider Macros That is, “macronutrients,” or carbohydrates, fat, and protein. The news is bad on the surface since the average fast food meal has more carbs and less protein per calorie than the average home-cooked meal. You can work to turn this around, though. Carbohydrates: Cut back on carbohydrates by skipping the starchy sides: French fries, potato chips, and hash browns, steamed, fried, or Mexican rice, and breadsticks. Try to go “green” (lettuce wrap) or “naked” (no wrap) with your burger, tortilla, or sandwich; if the fast food joint cannot honor your request, just eat the filling with a knife and fork, and throw away the bread, bun, tortilla, or taco shell (if you are feeling guilty because of starving children in third-world countries, make a donation. You’ll do more good than you would by adding starch to your hips). Protein: How can you boost your protein intake at a fast food restaurant to be what you need? Skinless grilled or baked chicken, lean cold cuts, cheese, and beans can all up your totals, and yogurt is an increasingly common side option. Even a small burger patty can give you 10 to 15 grams of protein, although it comes with a few extra grams of fat. A good protein goal for a meal is about 20-30 grams. You can get that for 200-300 calories with any of the following. Burger King Double Cheeseburger, no bun; Grilled Chicken Garden Salad, no croutons; or Veggie Burger with cheese, no bun or mayo. McDonald’s Grilled Southwestern Chicken Salad, no cheese; or Grilled Chicken Sandwich, no bun or spread. Taco Bell 2 grilled or fresco steak soft tacos, no tortillas; chicken or steak Power Menu Bowl, no rice or cheese. KFC Grilled Chicken Drumstick plus green beans or side salad. Panda Express Grilled Teriyaki or Asian Chicken. Fats: Your first order of business is to avoid anything fried. You will be avoiding excess grease while also avoiding sneaky carbs in breading – did you know that the amounts of carbs in onion rings and fried chicken are comparable to the amounts in bread? Also, watch the fatty spreads – think mayonnaise – salad dressings, and dips. Find the Vegetables Protein and vegetables…does this sound familiar? It should, since your goals when eating at a fast food restaurant should be the same as when you eat at home. Vegetables help fill you up without filling you out, and it is best to eat as many of them as you can handle with your pouch or sleeve. It may take a little more digging to find vegetables at fast food restaurants than at home, but you can usually do it. Here are a few leads. Ask for extra lettuce, tomatoes, and any other available vegetables on burgers and sandwiches. Order a side salad or baby carrots with your meal. Check for salads with grilled chicken as an entrée. Pile salsa and diced vegetables onto your naked burrito. When “Value” Isn’t Besides the convenience, the deals are among the most tempting things about fast food. For pennies more, you can often add fries and a drink, or you could get a second burger or taco for half the price. Don’t do it! “Value” depends on what you want and need; why would you pay extra, even if it is “only pennies more,” for extra fat, sugar, starch, and calories? A healthier definition of “value” might be to pay the least you can for a meal that is convenient, delicious, and healthy. Why include “oversized” in your definition? For those times when fast food simply makes sense, go for it – just keep yourself on track by reading the menu carefully and staying focused. You can do it, no matter where you end up. You might as well enjoy it! -
Hey Everyone! After a good night of rest, I am feeling so much better!!! Dawg & P'Nut: Good call!! You were right on with the diagnosis!! Next time I'll skip the long 6 hr drive to see my Doctor & just consult YOU!! Sunta: Thanks for being so concerned about me!! I saw that you checked back here several times. So sweet of you!! To answer your question about the blockage - Once the saline was taken completely out of my band & I drank the Water, everything that was blocking the way went right through. The doctor said that the skin of the hotdogs do not chew well even if you chewed them 100 times. They're just rubbery & it's like I had a rubber stop clogging my band. He suggested that if I really wanted to eat another one to peel the skin off first. I assured him that I would just completely stay away from them!! I DO NOT want to go through that again!!!!!! Just to clarify, the hot dog was probably long gone from my throwing it up. However, the swelling, inflammation & bleeding had already gotten to the point of no return & the band had to be unfilled to fix the problem. After reading other posts about several other people who have had slipped bands, I feel VERY, VERY blessed. I don't know why or how come mine was just blocked!! The black vomit to me was a dead give away that my band had slipped. I think it was all the prayers & white lights everyone sent my way. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! My doctor didn't charge me for the visit either!! I only had to pay $30 for the needle. That was also a blessing. After weighing in this morning, I gained back 2 lbs. from all the milkshakes, cream Soups, ice cream & yogurt I ate. Oh well!! They sure did taste good!! Anne - So sorry you had to have surgery for your slipped band!!! Did you by chance eat a hot dog?!?!?!?!? :speechles Here's to a fast recovery. I am officially banning Girl Scout Cookies & Hot dogs from my diet for the rest of my life!!!

I started pre-op diet today. Will have surgery in 2 weeks. I went to Trader Joe's and got Vanilla & Chocolate Soy Whey Protein Powder. Also got pure pressed Apple Juice. Pure carrot & apple Juice Mix. Also, got some non-fat yogurt and frozen fruit like mangos carrots and cherries and pineapples. What I plan to do is blend up the protein powder, frozen fruit and some juice for 2 meals out of the day. Will be eating veggie broth and tomato soup as well.

Good to know this stuff, I keep reading my paperwork, it's almost as big as a book by now about when and how to eat. For soft foods, cottage cheese, yogurt, scrambled eggs or eggbeaters, cream of wheat, white tuna, blended with some low fat low cal mayo and some onion and celery powder. Make it nice and mushy and take small bites. Can do the same with chicken. I love humus and a little of that would be nice. When yo can eat more you can have small amounts of pita bread they say you can tolerate that more than regular bread, not as likely to swell up. pureed fruit is good too with no sugar or syrup, use Spenda to make it sweeter and a little Water. Also puree Soups to a soft mush. Just a few ideas hope it helps -
Canadian, my fingers are crossed, good luck. Tommy!!! That's fantastic, 93 lbs, now that is encouraging for all of us. As for the ice cream, have you ever tried frozen yogurt. My husband is a big ice cream fan and now he eats frozen yogurt. Chapman makes several flavors, my husband's favorite is cappacino with chocolat expresso flakes and for 1/2 a cup it's about 100 calories. lol about the laundry. What kind of football did you play? We are big Canadian football fans in this house and we have season tickets to the Montreal Alouettes. Go Als Go!

I'm having mine on the 5th. Eeeeeek!! I'm really excited about it too. Like Laura, Linda, Bobbi I have the concerns about being a failure after being banded. I really have to work on that chewing, chewing, chewing thing. I'm the type to chew, chew swallow. I guess I will learn not to do that. I have to be on clear liquids for the first month. The doc said that I could have milk though. You know he even said that I could have the plain yogurts too. He said that it shouldn't cause any problems. My first fill will be in a month after. I'm so looking forward to all of what everyone else talks about. The "normal" size clothing is just going to be so wonderful. I see a shopping spree in my future!! Yay!! The going to a restaurant and not thinking that everyone is looking at you or if you can fit into one of the booths!! Gosh how I hated that. I would avoid going. Soooooo.... Monday for me her in upstate NY!! Dr. Taesun Moon. He has a great sense of humor. He even said something like. "So it won't bother you if I come in on one of my rounds after your surgery with a steak sandwich now would it"? What a hoot. It was funny. really. How long does everyone have to stay at the hospital? I have to stay from Monday through Wednesday. Okay, we can do this!! I'm looking forward to hearing of all the progress!! Dianne

Carbohydrate intake?
BLERDgirl replied to retzlpa's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Like everything regarding diets and weight loss, ask here and get a million different answers. I wasn't given a carb limit or number. I was given a calorie range. Along with my protein and fluid goals that is the only limitation my nutritionist gave me. I do not eat low carb and my NUT doesn't push it. However I do pay close attention to the source of my carbs. Plant based carbs I don't worry about. I avoid "white carbs", like those found in breads, pastas, white rice and refined sugar. I try to eat as cleanly as possible. No "diet" food . On the occasions I use butter, I use real butter. However those occasions are few and far between. I buy plain yogurt and add my own fruit. I eat whole plants and grains. I am never constipated and have been losing steadily. -
Foods you no longer enjoy
hmills653 replied to MerryMarie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So far I'm able to eat anything but finds that sweets aren't as satisfying anymore, not that I'm jumping on that bandwagon this soon but like my husband wanted ice cream did I got one scoop of frozen yogurt and it was like ehhh. Wasn't worth my calorie intake. I used to be a carb and sweets gal. My new thing now is, when you get to the cheese center of your danish I'll take a little bite. Once again not planning on making this a habit but sometimes it's hard to sit and watch everyone else eat it but I know that I didn't have this surgery to eat desserts all day lol. -
I would ditch the shake and Protein bar, and start adding in tuna/chicken/egg salad, or cheese. I stayed on mushies/purees/soft solids for a long time because it was the only way I could get in the required calories. If you can replace the shake, bar, and soup with a more calorie/nutrient/protein dense meal, I think you'll find it easier to hit calorie goals. Mix chicken/tuna salad with hard-boiled eggs and greek yogurt, it'll keep carbs low, but increase calories/protein. I sprinkled the dry ranch dressing into my chicken/tuna salads for flavor. Deli meat with cream cheese rolled up was a good source of protein and calories, easily chewed down to mush, and packed a couple hundred calories per meal. Ground meat (turkey or beef) with marinara or alfredo sauce or a cream of soup was staples for me as well. Ground meat with taco or fajita seasoning with cheese and greek yogurt was a meal as well. You'll notice as the weeks pass that you'll be able to get in a little more food each month until your sleeve reaches mass capacity. If I follow the rules, even at 21 months, I can not consume more then 3-5oz of dense protein. By rules, eating slow, not stretching my meal out over 20 minutes, and no drinking while eating. I'm a rule follower about 85% of the time, but in maintenance there is a bit more laxity in my meals. I often stretch my meal out over 40 minutes, and I sometimes sip with my meal(not drink, but a few sips here and there to wet my whistle). It's what I have to maintain my current weight. I don't have enough time in my day to eat 6-8 small meals, so I need to get my calories/protein in about 4 meals per day.

Band To Sleeve. Is It All It's Cracked Up To Be?
hrtgoeson replied to kate33's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I've only had my sleeve two weeks but it really is a whole new world. I've gone 3 weeks without throwing up, which is a record with the band. Even though I'm only on full liquids I could have issues iwth the band when it came to eating something like yogurt. I can have breakfast in the morning without have to down 24 oz of water first to make sure food could even go down. I just feel like this is what weight loss surgery was supposed to be all along. I had my band 3 years but I was miserable with it. Fills, unfills, re-fills, re-unfills...neverending vicious cycle. I will never recommend the band to anyone. Sleeve ALL THE WAY! -

Is it better to eat your protein or drink your protein?
tamg26k replied to tamg26k's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
@@ziggypbang Thank you so much! I try to get a few ounces of lean meat at each meal and a little Greek yogurt or a Protein pudding and that gets me what I need. Adding the shake has helped post workouts. -
sleeved July 15th, how are you doing? what are you eating
BarrySue replied to roxy79's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
banana, Soup, low-fat cheese, couple ounces of no-bean chili mixed with a bit of low-fat cheddar, few slices of lean deli meat, and fairlife milk either hot with sugar-free cocoa mix or cold with sugarfree strawberry syrup. Those are the only things I've had over the past month that didn't make me feel sick or doubled over in pain. Even yogurt became really off-putting to me (everything is suddenly too sweet!) Protein shakes make me ill. Even my pain meds make me ill. My sleeve hates almost everything, lol. Down 43 lbs, but it's pretty miserable not being able to eat anything. I think I'll feel better when I start work and school again (three more days, Jesus!) -
Why do I feel Hungry all the time
FrankyG replied to Kisha42's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh my. Just like Babbs said, you're eating too many carbs so of course you'll be feeling hungry. Carbs cause carb cravings and not eating protein is going to make it even worse. Protein is absolutely the first thing you eat and should be the large portion of any meal for the rest of your life. It doesn't matter if you aren't eating sugar. Simple carbs like potatoes or grits act just like sugar in your body and the more you eat them, the more you'll want to eat them. And not eating enough protein will really screw you up - your body will start burning muscle instead of fat, your skin and hair will suffer and the fatigue will get worse... not eating your protein is just all around super bad. chicken, fish, beef, low carb yogurt, cottage cheese, regular cheeses, high protein/low carb milk (like Fairlife or Mootopia), Beans (refried are awesome with a bit of cheese and/or sour cream)... there are so many things you could be eating that are way better for you. Your sleeve isn't the issue; it isn't the problem - your food choices are. Please do the reading and research on here for good protein meals and recipes, as you are heading down the wrong road right now, but you can turn this around if you're willing to try. Good luck!! -
Hey great job on the weight loss but try to go for healthier Snacks if your still hungry between meals nuts, yogurt and jerky
