  1. Had Lap band surgery in November 2012. I am down 58 pounds with 1 fill (6cc) and have officially hit week #3 of my first plateau. I have an appointment scheduled for another fill on the 23rd but am wondering how long this will last. In the past, when I have hit these plateau's I would quit and turn to food. This time I have picked up my weight lifting routine. Starting to get frustrating...Any advice would be wonderful.
  2. I can't remember how many times I was denied in the last 6 months, then finally, they sent it to their review board and it was approved! I now have to complete an 8 week weight management, with success, and I see the surgeon this month. Hang in there-Last November, I approached this as well-I will throw my name in the hat and see what happens...played it out as the paperwork started to roll in...now all of a sudden, I am getting very close to the end of this process-begining of another!

No weight loss 5 days posts op

You are not doing anything wrong, it's completely normal! They pumped your abdomen full of gas for the surgery and you most likely had an IV. It will take a little time for that to go away. And depending on your weight lost prior to surgery, your body could be holding onto all calories. Be patient, the scale will move! Best of luck to you!
  4. I only have to do liquids for two weeks and this week which is my second week I can do whole liquid like yogurt and stuff. So I don't think you starting softs after two weeks is bad, since that's what I will be doing as per my Dr. I no that when I weigh myself I get really depresses so I try to do it only once a week which is killer. I had my revision on May 6th and actually gained 8 pounds of fluid I guess. I was so depressed because I am not eating and still gained weight. Today I finally went back to my post op weight minus 2 pounds. It will come off just stop stressing, with the band some weeks I lost a lot, some weeks I lost a little, and some weeks nothing.
  5. 199.8 this morning. LOL scales definitely aren't "flying" downward like I hear with some new sleevers, but that's (mostly) ok. I think we all want to lose weight as quickly as possible, even when it's not realistic. If I weren't still trying to stick to full liquids/puree (essentially the same thing with my docs office), I wouldn't feel like I had a sleeve at all. No difficulty drinking, haven't had trouble with anything that I've tried, no nausea, soreness, etc. I'm hungry, too, but I'm hoping that will change once I start eating solids. On the NSV side of things, my pants have definitely gotten looser! I worked a big bike race yesterday and although it sucked to be in full police uniform directing traffic for 12 hrs, it was nice to have loose pants while doing it. No complaints (so far and knock on wood!) about the sleeve! I didn't weigh at home before going to MX, but I'm guessing I've lost 12-15 lbs since surgery (2 weeks ago). I've NEVER lost an average of 6 lbs in one week before and now, the scales will be going back in the closet! LOL I'll weigh again in 2 weeks, maybe a month, or, if I can stand it , 6 weeks. Until then, I'll try to make the best choices I can with soft foods (start those tomorrow) and keeping the calories down, but emotionally, I do better without those scale numbers. Cindy
  6. I had bad soreness for about a week in my left arm and shoulder. Apparently gas. My abdomen was swollen and discolored. I was on IVs for 3 days so am sure I gained weight but I have no scales. I am 2 weeks out now and that has all gone away. Just still incision soreness. As for sleeping, I have to sleep on my back which is no fun so I take a pain med at bed time to help me sleep. Hope I'll be able to sleep more comfortably soon.
  7. I am 12 days post op and I have been doing pretty well with walking for at least 30 minutes a day. As I loose weight I would like to become more and more active. I have a treadmill which helps but I would like to get motivated walk more even start running. I would also like to start a strength training routine. Choosing the type of work out will be different for many because the goal is to workout and (as much as possible) have fun while doing it. I created this post so we can share with each other exactly what (we) you say to yourself or what you do the moment you are tempted to talk yourself out of working out. What motivates you to get up and do it despite of... I appreciate anyone sharing it will greatly help me to hear your advice and I'm hoping it will help others as well. (BTW I got the Weslo Cadence G 5.9 for $287 Best selling treadmill on Amazon and 3 year warranty less than $50) Best purchase I've made in a LONG time.
  8. So many of us got this surgery because we were parents who wanted to do right by our kids. As you lose the weight, is it changing things for your kids? What do they think about it? At our house: -no more junk food anywhere in the house -my son has to eat Protein first (he would have lived on just bread if you let him) -we went to the state fair where I was able to walk all over and was less tired than him -my kids are our biggest supporters and they're seeing us succeed. That makes me happy. Cute NSV. I've been slopping around in 2xl pjs. Loose, unsexy, old. My husband gently reminded me that I could now buy sexy lingerie if I wanted? (If I wanted, not he. Sneaky!) I bought some L sizes pjs. I feel they cling to me too much. I asked my 13-year old if they were too tight. Here's his answer: "Wow! (Waves hands in hourglass shape) They look just fine to me!" Hahahahaha!
  9. Im 5 weeks since surgery and down 37 pounds and even though no one tells me they notice it or not. I notice it! I am wearing clothes that I couldnt fit before. I believe it takes shorter people longer to notice the weight lost opposed to taller people. regardless keep doing what you are doing and eventually they will see it.

    In need of veteran advice!

Struggle to get in "enough calories". enough per? Possible the band is working with nothing in it? Yes, there are some VERY successful people on here who have never had a fill postop. Some just don't seem to need it. Getting a fill later? My surgeon would. Why get one now if you think everything is working good and you're losing weight......thats really the only goal. Congrats! Sounds like you're off to a great start!
  11. I decided to post this so we can all remember the basic rules to succeed with vsg. I have noticed my weightloss has slowed down allot mostly due to eating too many carbs. Im in the calorie range my doc wants to be in but my carbs are high. according to his book if you stall or plateau its either 3 things:too much carbs, not enough exercise, or your building muscle. For me i think its the first 2. Here we go! 1. I will exercise 5 times a week for 30-45 minutes. 2.I will watch my carbohydrate intake 3.I will try to eat 3-5 meals per day with no unhealthy snacking in between 4.I will drink 8 glasses of Water per day 5.I will eat a minimum of 60-70 grams of Protein daily 6.I will honor my commitment to good health and healthy choices 7.I will have follow up care appointments with my doc as needed 8.I will always take my Vitamins 9.I will weight my self once a week 10.I will remember that this is my own journey and not compare my self to others 11.I will always keep in mind that practicing my new habits will make me healthier happier stronger and more energetic. This is what I turn to when I fall off the wagon sort of speak. I need to drink more water, eat more protein, exercise more, and drink more water. Gotta keep my head in the game. Thanks to my Dr.Alvarez for his awesome book about vsg. Hope this helps others
  12. Has anyone had a stall after 3rd week post op and how long was the stall? I had surgery august 5th and then the stall happened in the 3rd week and now its the 6th of November and I'm still in the stall I was 320 pre op 314 on day of surgery and currently 295 my clothes are getting loose and my lower back pain is gone but the scale has not moved more than 295 and 290 I know it takes time and a lot of work but it is very frustrating to me that I haven't lost the weight by now:( I can drink as much as before surgery without restriction and my meals have been cut in half with restriction I'm more active eating less food and just drink Water or coffee but nothing is working Is there away to jump start and get out of a stall because i need one any suggestions will be great thnx
  13. Hi Brooke, I am 9 days out from surgery, and I too have questions. I haven't lost but 2 lbs since my surgery. Total weight loss of 17.5 lbs. total in 3 weeks (2 weeks pre-op). Kinda concerned that the weight doesn't seem to be coming off as fast as I thought it would. My BMI was at 30 when I had the surgery and my weight was 177. I am walking everyday. I am hoping when I get back to work next week that the weight will begin to fall off. I am only having very liquid foods and protein drinks until next week. Then on to soft puréed foods. No complications as far as drinking anything either. But I am careful about how much over what time period. I too am afraid to not follow the drs. orders. I guess I am just looking for support and would appreciate all offered. Christina With a BMI of 30 your loss is going to be slow. Generally the bigger you are the faster the initial weight loss.
  14. Whitney - I lost 28lbs since 8/17...the other weight I lost pre-op since 4/1. Ryan - for me it was because I took it on an empty stomach. My NUT said to take my multi and calcium AFTER EATING! I will not forget again!
  15. I haven't been released to go back to Water aerobics yet...Doc said 4 weeks after surgery. I am walking about 2 miles a day now...not all at once but I am getting there. It is getting too hot to walk in Mississippi so I may use the elliptical at the gym soon. I am going to start weight as soon as Doc says it is okay.

Losing Fast Enough? & Other Questions

Not sure of your sources, but I believe 5lbs a week is on the extremely fast end of weight loss. 15lbs a week will never be sustainable. People may have a single week where they lose 15 (MAYBE!?!), but no one is losing 60+lbs a months on average. From what I have seen on these forums, people tend to lose 10-20lbs a month the first few months, then it slows. Starting weight/BMI, gender and genetics have a lot to do with it, and it sounds like you are losing very fast. Follow you plan and you will continue to lose weight - hit your Protein and Water targets. Many people use shakes for months or years, but check with your doc/NUT for your plan. Yes, some foods will go down better than others - you will most likely experience this for months or years. Not only that, but things that are fine one day will probably not be another day - and this is all very personal. Some people struggle with eggs, some with fish, some with beef, others have no issues at all. It's a continual learning process. Dumping syndrome only affect somewhere around 30% of bypass patients from my recollection (if it's not 30%, it is definitely a minority). For many of those individuals, it lessens or goes away over time. For some it never goes away. I've never read anything that says Probiotics lessen the effects of dumping syndrome. However, if you are following your plan, and avoiding sugar, you should not be dumping as sugar is the main culprit (meals high and fat I believe can also cause it in some people).
  17. So my surgery date was May 28, 2013. My pre surgery weight was 254, my current weight is 213! I'm excited about the 41 pound weight loss but I don't see a difference and I'm always hungry!!!! I'm still on a restricted diet and just literally got released to exercise but I have no energy to do it!!! Just looking for help and or advice!!!
  18. Unfortunately, i dont think i am. I am getting better but i am definitely nowhere near 64 fluid ounces and 60-80grams of protein daily:( Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Is it a hunger growl? Are you satisfied/full when you eat? Increasing fluids is hard but it helps with healing and weight loss. Do your best to try to get your fluids up. Try different fluids. I like the crystal light fruit punch. Also no sugar added hot chocolate. I add it to 10-12oz instead of the 6oz of Water the box calls for. It helps put me at my fluids goal. Somethings i can drink quickly others not so much. How much protein are you able to get? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using the BariatricPal App
  19. You gotta walk through the door or you will never know what is on the other side. My surgeon gives all his patients a journal - a way to track food, weight loss, exercise, vitamins, etc. On the front it says," As I'm getting smaller, my world is getting bigger." I never really understood it until I lost about 50-60 pounds and could be more mobile and pain free. Now my world can't be big enough! I feel no limits - only by my own mind. I believe I could hike the Grand Canyon now, or ride in the 100 + mile El Tour de Tucson (bike), or hike the 830 mile Arizona Trail, or take flying lessons. Or kayak without swamping the boat, or get on and off the floor with my grandkids, or walk up hills without being winded, or ride my mule, or buy SMALL size tops and size 12 pants. It's an unbelievable world right now for me - a world I would never know without walking through that door, scared as I was (crying in preop, wondering if I should just get up and leave.) Surgery has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. It is a whole new life!!!!!! A life I never thought I would see again. Yes, there can be complications (I got a blood clot in my leg), and yes, recovery is a bear. But there is a whole new world waiting for you on the other side of that door.
  20. You said you don't feel like you've lost any weight at all. How much have you lost?
  21. My starting weight is 286. I had surgery on Sep 16. The first 2-3 weeks I lost 30 lbs. Ever since I have been only losing if I'm lucky 1-2 lbs. What gives man. Am I doing something wrong? I only eat 3 times a. Day and its all meat and cheese.
  22. 60lbs since surgery, 75lbs since the pre-op. I wanted to lose about 108lbs from my pre-op or 100lbs from surgery. So about 60% weight loss which is considered the average for this surgery in the final count. If I get to 80%, I will be happy and consider myself at goal as I will be under a BMI of 30 and that is the "goal" for my doctors.
  23. Oh man. You are not alone. I'm newly divorced and hoping that once I've lost the weight I'll have to confidence to move on. Every one tells me to find my happiness and then happiness with someone else will come along. Don't give up!! It'll happen when you least expect it I'm sure. Just focus on your health and happiness and relax!! I'm sure he'll come along. Hang in there!

    Struggling so much emotionally

Unfortunately, losing weight will not guarantee easier relationships, some may say it will bring about the opposite. It might make starting one "easier" in the sense that we are more confident and put ourselves out there than before we were heavier. If you think it's insecurities and what you deem flaws than maybe take some you time. Focus on what you want to change. And, I agree with Kate here, when you are happier with yourself you will find that you will be more content in life. We can't be a good partner to anyone if we are not happy with ourselves. Just because you may be getting more attention now, doesn't mean that it's the perfect time for you to dive into a full blown relationship. Iv'e always found that the best relationships I've been in started when I wasn't actively looking for them. It also could be you are less willing to accept major flaws in others and will move on a little quicker. In the meantime, enjoy getting out there, it will happen. Good luck .
  25. Worry not! Your weight loss will slow to a more 'normal' pace after your initial large losses at first. The weight always comes off fast at first, then usually your body puts the brakes on in the form of a stall, then the losses even out a bit. It's actually pretty rare for people to lose 'too much weight'. Most of the complaints are they can't seem to get the remaining 10-20 off the closer they are to goal. You'll be just fine Good job!
