Biggest Loser last night
ladyrider replied to sleeve 4 me's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The doctor did say that when you lose weight that fast that you lose muscle tissue, so that when you gain it back, you gain back all fat...being 14 and with unsupportive parents she probably wasn't taught much about exercise or nutrition. I never understood how a person can gain weight back after a bypass. -
Hi I have had the band now 4/5 weeks and was doing really well lost 12lbs but now I seem to be putting the lbs back on. My first fill is on the 18 November and am very worried I will but all the weight back on before the first fill. I know you are new to the band like me and wondered if you could give me some advice. Can you bring the first fill forward. Many thanks

What Would You Say Was Standard?
Postop replied to SnowDaisy's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Is it standard to get the blood thinning injections during your stay (and some given for your return home)? Not that I know of (unless you need them). Is it standard to get the blood clot prevention boots after the operation? (They are like huge blood pressure cuffs that squeeze your legs). Yes, wore them for days & had a Foley catheter for a couple of days as well. What were you offered by way of food and drinks? Was it bullion type broth, just Water etc.? Yes, liquids to sip the next day (water & Gatorade, also Soup which I didn’t eat) and a lump of turkey the next evening. My DS nutrit. had told me what to eat and drink (as the hospital wasn’t great with what it offered WLS patients). Are you given any meds to go home with, and if so what? Yes, Vicodin. Nowadays, I believe they give Percocet. Were you given information packs for your future eating, drinking regime? A lot of documentation before surgery so I could familiarize myself with it. If you PM me your email, I can send what I have in an email attachment [for gastric bypassers]. Were you allowed to wear your panties during the operation? Maybe paper ones? No, nothing. They want a clear path. No shaving, though. Does your nail varnish have to come off? Finger, toes or both? No, as they use pulse oximeter, it wasn’t necessary, but I did it anyway just to be sure. -
Hi GUYS I have not had my gastric bypass yet but saw an item on their shelf at GNC that MAY help us as we lose hair. It is called VIVISCAL in a pink and white box. Under the title it has Hair Growth Program. Next it reads that is NOURISHES thinning hair and promotes existing hair growth* from within. 60 tablets Extra Strength Dietary Supplement PRICE is 49.99 but it is less right now~ Just sharing to see if anyone has heard of this or is someone has tried it....

I've been doing research for a long time but I was afraid to talk to anyone about my interest in lapband. My dad did Gastric Bypass last year. He did research and had to do an 18 month pre-op diet plan for his insurance. He made it everyone's business every step of the way, and that is just not my style. I don't want to wait until I'm in my 60s. My dad was too heavy for too long and even now as the weight drops off, he's still in pain and miserable. I want to enjoy life with my family and run and play with my daughter. I go to my first lap band info session, possibly followed by a support meeting next Tuesday June 10th.

Dr. Fernando Garcia. I had my surgery done 5/22/2012 and would do it all over again. From the beginning when I contacted Alma (his coordinator), they were nothing but helpful and informative. I traveled with my mother and they even made sure she was taken care of (gastric bypass patient and diabetic) while I was there. Any question that I had before I got there, when I arrive, after the surgery, and when I got back home they were quick to answer. I am completely satisfied with my experience ...... check out my youtube channel for my progress www.youtube,com/ldeannepps

Anyone Revision/Band to Bypass in ONE operation?
Jdewv75 replied to abhamiltonnn_band2bypass's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had my band removed and gastric bypass all in one surgery. It was no problem at all. Best decision I've ever made. I did have quite a bit of soreness where the port was removed from the muscle but pain meds helped that. I was thankful I didn't have to have another surgery. Best of Luck! You Got This!!! -
I just had my two week appt on the first. What doctor do you expect to get? Also what surgery are you wanting? The bypass makes me very nervous.

I was banded 2/07 and I have recently notice that I am losing hair also. Because I researched this surgery for 1 whole year I was suprise because yes hair loss can occur with any WLS but it is more commom with gastric bypass patients because of the protein deficiency. So I had my blood work done and I was deficient in proteins. In spite of the fact that I still drank 3 protein shakes a day. So I would have my blood work check just to make sure everythng is OK.

OT: Anyone do the Disney Cruise?
princess_n_thep replied to Margo's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
WE LOVE CRUISES!!! I have been on 14 of them now. I loveeeeeee them. They are the BEST way to vacation! And the most bang for your buck. I have been on Disney twice. Both times I wasn't really impressed. I agree that Royal Carribean Cruise Lines is my top choice for cruising. Unless you are a HUGE Disney fan and absolutely want the Disney feel, then go to another cruise line. Disney is expensive and not really all that great. RCCL also has the best kids programs in my opinion. Your daughter will LOVE it!! The worst time to cruise in the Carribean is Late July-Mid October. Hurricane season. Those are the best rates though. It is a gamble though because seas can be rough and itinerary can change. I like cruises in April and May. January is good too. We prefer the 5-7 night cruises. 3 and 4 day cruises seem too short, 10 and 14+ cruises are wayyyyy too long. Regarding cruises: the best way to have the most fun is to GET INVOLVED! Go to the shows, enjoy the games, shuffleboard, ping pong, rock climbing, do the trivia games, karaoke, casino, bingo, go to the talent show, etc etc. There is a list of all that is going on every day in your room. Take a highliter, mark them and go to them! IMPORTANT: A MUST MUST MUST see on every RCCL cruise ship is the Quest game and the Newlywed game!!! You must not miss it, hilarious!!! Also, pick a shore excursion. There is only so much shopping and looking you can do at each port. At least one excursion is good. Remember that you will be tipping at the end of the week. It usually is around $150 at the end of a week. Enjoy the formal dinners in the grand room. I know it is a pain in the ass to have a set time to eat, but it really is worth it to go! The most important advice I can give is to have a carry on bag with a change of clothes for the cruise, swim suit and dinner clothing and lounging on the ship clothes that night!! Sometimes your bags don't get delivered to your room until late that night. It sucks to be stuck in warm weather with calypso music playing and you are in a sweater and courdoroys, no make up, airplane hair, with your parka wrapped around your waist!! I can't wait until RCCL's Freedom of the Seas!!! We are going next November!! WOOOOT!!! And I will bet you all a Twinkie I will be going on that surfing thing!! -
Hello I am in philly but am from Pennsauken Nj I am having gastric bypass on 12/15

I was a 30 year smoker. I quit about a year and a half before my surgery. I still want to smoke, all the time. I don't, but I honestly do. I have a friend who had bypass, and she claims it kept her weight down. I believe it, I gained 50 lbs after I stopped smoking. I am hopeful I will continue to remain smoke free. I have found a freedom I never really understood, until now. But...if it's a donut or a cig, I'm probably going to go for the cigarette. lol Just being honest.

Surgery on June 15, In Missouri.
Brian88ss replied to grandmaofone's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Unfortunately Dr doesn't like Milk of Magnesia, but did get told that I looked very good and it's normal for a Bypass patient to feel uncomfortable and bloated one week out from surgery. Once they took my drain out made some difference but not a lot was told to take another dose of Mira Lax and add some Bene Fiber to my diet and constipation maybe something I may need to watch for in the future. So until things get moving I will probably continue to feel bloated. So I guess I let nature take its course for now, just get in some more walks and stay active to keep things rollin' and Thank god I got friends in my corner to talk to. Thanks a lot for your soft shoulders to cry on. Brian -
Surgery was August 20th
debrooks66 replied to debrooks66's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Down 17 lbs one week tomorrow since surgery! I am learning my "full" points. I am looking forward to the pureed foods stage. I am fortunate to be working from home and won't return to work till Wednesday. I have learned a lot through this process. What triggers my bad eating and where my priorities really where. This past week I completely shut down work. I'm one that typically would respond during my vacation this time it was for me. Now I will confess I did check email (only out of boredom - BUT - I did not respond to them! Huge step for me). My stress at work is my trigger. I gave myself an overall goal of November to change things. First, focus on me and my health, second, if the job doesn't work anymore time to make a change! Life is good! I can honestly say that just the 17 lbs has made a difference in me! I can't wait to see what happens when I reach my ultimate goal of losing a total of 100 lbs! -
VSG Surgery 3/2/2017- Clara Maas , Bellville, NJ Nervous!!!
Michelle920 replied to LuAnn Gazzana Thomas's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi LuAnn! I'm in NJ also. I had gastric bypass in 2015, but I can give you a little advice. If you're going to be in the hospital more than one night, bring dry shampoo. I had to stay three nights and couldn't shower, so I wish I had mine! Bring Gas-x strips with you. I never had a problem drinking water before surgery but it was harder after, so I drank vitamin zero. Water just didn't appeal to me. And I haven't tried that brand of vitamins. Over the last year and a half I've tried a variety of multis, all chewable, bariatric geared, in the beginning. Now I'm able to take pills. I prefer the chewy kind. I'm worried suddenly. First of all, my surgery date was set for December 13th on November 30th. So I was told to start the pre op diet on December first, but then they couldn't get me in to a Pre op diet class until December 6th. I did start on the first, but that was not two weeks out, then when i went to the class i found i was not doing it quite right. I was eating 2% cheese, but "not the right kind" and my protein drinks had to many calories. My powder is fine, but then adding it to a drink made it more calories than they allow. So what I'm saying is, I'm basically only getting one week of pre op diet before my surgery this Thursday. Should i consider asking my surgeon to reschedule so I can try again and get that liver all shrunk up like they want? I want to do everything right, this is kind of a kind about thing! I'm worried 😟!

Has anyone tried this diet post surgery? I've begun doing some reading and bypass is a contraindication for the diet. Anyone know why? I was 432 at the time of surgery, and reached a low of 298, but have been residing between 303 and 310. Any insight would be great. I have been noticing some old eating patterns creeping in and am working to address them. I have a goal of being between 250-275, but have been stuck for months now. I will be two years post op this coming October. I don't think I have utilized this site enough, and I don't really have a support system of other patients to bounce things off. My wife is great and my friends too, but no one really knows what I've gone through or what I am going through... thanks for taking the time to read.

Sounds like you have a good surgeon! Mine discussed RNY and Band with me, and had the same response for me. Sleeve was not available when I was banded. Remember, weight loss is slower with banding than bypass. I was ok with that. Best wishes in your decision.

After surgery, I discussed the issue of weight gain with my nutritionist. Her recommendation for those that have reached maintenance phase is to eat a balanced meal of Protein, carbs and fat. Immediately after RNY gastric bypass surgery, the part of your stomach that processes fats and sugars was cut away. Therefore if you ate fats or sugars, it would pass through your new rerouted stomach and into your intestines and you could experience dumping syndrome. But after about the first year, your intestines realize something is amiss and evolve to process fats and sugars. I feel fats are important in the maintenance phase because the goal in the maintenance phase is hunger control. One of the properties of fat is to satisfy hunger cravings. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery2.pdf

I was sleeved on 8/21 and talked to my surgeon for my 6-week last Monday (9/30.) I explicitly asked him about coffee, and he said it was fine as long as I make sure to sip some extra Water to make up for the diuretic effect. The way he explained it, the "no-coffee" restriction is more important for gastric bypass patients due to the re-routing of their intestines....obviously that doesn't happen with our surgery. That being said, I'd tell anyone to respect what their own surgeon told them to do. If I hadn't asked, I'd be under the impression that I'm not allowed to have it. But my surgeon was quite clear. I then asked if there was any food or drink that I should always avoid. While he of course wants me to stick to healthy eating, he said that unlike his gastric bypass patients, there's nothing in particular that will make me sick or cause complications.

Calling all who had surgery in MEXICO
Elisabethsew replied to roseyandmusic's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Do you have a lot of weight to lose? Are you a volume eater or a junk food eater or both? The sleeve is a restrictive weight loss surgery (as is the band). The bypass is a restrictive AND a malabsorptive procedure and requires some life long changes. Have you decided which is best for you? Once you decide, it will be easier to make a choice concerning what surgeon is best for you. -
I've bought two. One is silver and really nice, the other one is attached to a sports band. On the front they only have my information and emergency contact and then on the back is the info about gastric bypass. No be has asked me about mine. If they do I will probably just tell them I have some medical allergic reactions. It makes me feel safer wearing it in case something were to happen.

Dr. Oz about WLS Monday
slm2007 replied to 123crod's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Gosh, you just have the best way with words sometimes! "at one time we all were *only* 50 pounds overweight" - AMEN. I really just wish I could get it through peoples thick heads that this isn't easy. Actually, if I wanted "easy" I'd probably go for the bypass because I think (for me personally) it would get the weight off faster and would probably train me faster (dumping syndrome and all) to watch what I eat. This band is not an easy way out and I guarantee that there aren't to many people that woke up one day and said "OOps, I'm fat, how about surgery." I don't think that a "skinny" person would be able to live with the restrictions a band puts on their lives. I'd like for them to try and see how "easy" it is! I remember oh so well when I only had 30 pounds to lose. I told myself at one point, "If I hit 150, I'm joining Weight Watchers"...and I did. Then I lost 20 pounds. It came back....then I said..."if I hit 175, I'm going to join jenny craig this time" and I did. This time I lost about 40 pounds and it came back. Then I said to myself "I'm never going to hit 200 and if I do, Bariatric Center"....and I did and I only lost 30 pounds and of course it came back and brought more friends with it like it always did! I said "If I hit 250 I'm just going to jump off a bridge"...well, I couldn't do that because I was pregnant and my son changed my mind about the bridge....but never lost the baby weight and here I am...getting surgery on April 18th. I'm done and I am glad that help is out there now sooner than later. I am looking forward to this journey and ElfiPoo's continued words of wisdom....
