Need Lap Band Buddy / Mentor 52F over 300lbs looking for same or mentor
cynpatt replied to bayareanan's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi Nan, I was banded on 3-5-10 and would be happy to go along the journey with you. I am 45 years old and at 5'9" my pre-op weight was 350 pounds, with a BMI of 52. This week will be my 8 month "banderversary"! I am currently down 93 pounds and absolutely love my band. It is deffinitly a journey and takes a lot of work. I think it is also different for those of us who started with SO much to lose and not being 20 years old any more!!! I will be happy to go through what has helped me so far. What is going on with you? In the begining it is very difficult before you reach restriction. What is called "bandster hell" here on the boards is oh so true. When is your first fill? WHat size band do you have? You can either message me here, or if you would like on my email. cynpatt@yahoo.com Looking forward to hearing from you. Cynthia -
Back to Work Monday - Keeping WLS Private
gowalking replied to JustWatchMe's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just know that when you have alot to lose like I did, and people notice that you have lost a considerable amount of weight, they may very well assume you had WLS. I've dropped basically a whole other person in terms of the amount of weight I've lost and I know the women in my department are likely assuming I had WSL. The guys only notice I'm smaller...they don't wonder how I did it.. But these days, WLS is so prevalent that I think most folks make that assumption. I've had a few people ask me outright what I did and I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt that they are asking because they see I've been successful, and not just because they are nosy. I tell them I went on a strict food plan and am staying around 1,000 calories daily. Most people I work with knew I had severe joint issues as I've been on a cane for more than two years and once they found out I had bilateral hip replacement, they are satisfied with my answer that I needed to lose weight to prepare for the surgery. It's all true and the only thing I leave out is the lapband part. And I do that because I'm not comfortable talking about it, not because I fear any negative response. -
So close to goal, now I am gaining. How?
AvaFern replied to 24601's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If it makes you feel better it took me 5 months to lose the last 2 pounds to get to goal and before that I lost maybe 1-2 pounds a month for several months. While my goal was 129 and yours is 140, if your profile is right you are wayyy taller than I am, so the distribution is probably comparable. The last few pounds are an absolute B and while I have maintained now for just short of a year, I literally cannot get under 129 to save my life, lol. At certain points our body decides that it likes the weight it is at and it seems to really get down the last bit requires a lot of discipline. I am lazy, so I am going to be just fine at 129 and not 119 which was my stretch goal. -
2 short dizzy spells, a little scared
GeekMomChanging replied to freelee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
At 5 months I still have problems. I've learned to be very careful. At 2 months I got out of bed to go to the bathroom, passed out and banged my head of the floor hard enough to have a headache for two days. I get a lot of calories so I think it's low blood pressure. I've read that when you lose weight the vessels are still dilated to support the weight and it can make you dizzy. Drinking LOTs of Water and taking B12 has helped the most. For me it wasn't a blood sugar issue. Be careful. Always get up slowly. -
First, I am very sorry to hear that you do not have the support you need. I was banded on the 15th of April and one of the things I had to do prior to my banding was attend a seminar. That was one of the things that was spoken about was having that support through this process. My father and my in-laws know I have had the surgery. My mother does not know. I believe this is why places like lapbandtalk and lapband support groups exsist so not only people that have the support system, but people that need a support system can have the support they need to make it through this process. I agree with Rilversea if they won't support you I bet you have people that will. Just trust them to know. I was kind of hush hush about what I was having surgery for and just let people know that I was going to be out for a week. I did finally tell a couple people and I guess the word got out. Come to find out there are people rooting for me here to do well and to get the weight off. I guess what I am trying to say is sometimes your biggest cheerleaders are not the ones you live with and spend time with. I wish you the best of luck. James from Bremerton WA

Going into week 3 and intergestion
Afrodite82 replied to kooks3003's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Indigestion seems to be a very common side effect of weight loss surgery. I'm not speaking from experience as I have not had my sleeve yet, but I see this topic come up again and again as I comb through all of these posts (sleep deprivation? Me? Pffft! Well...okay maybe Anyway, were you not prescribed some sort of antacid or anti-reflux meds? If no, perhaps you might wanna get yourself to a drugstore for some over-the-counter relief until you can request something from your doc. -
Ugh... I am so glad I work from home because my workplace likes to spread rumors about people who are losing weight. I had a friend who had bariatric surgery while we were still working in the office and one day a lady who otherwise never talks to her came up and asked if she had cancer. Some people... Sorry to derail, OP, but these boards are a good source of support and information. If you don't have the support system at home you can always reach out here

How will I keep my secret in this situation?
HarleyNana replied to sweetsue's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
It's not really a secret to me, but when people inquire about my weight loss, (I'll share with anyone who wants to listen), but some times it's just not the right place or time to explain, so I just say I'm trying to eat healthier and more Protein. Seems to do the trick for me. -
How will I keep my secret in this situation?
Wheetsin replied to sweetsue's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
It isn't?!? Please don't tell my band that! I eat chicken virtually every day. I think you might have been drawn into the "if it happens once, that makes it true for all" party. I know several bandsters, and only one who has any problem with chicken at all. I can't offer much to address your initial question b/c I wasn't ashamed of my band and had nothing to hide, so I'm not really clever with how to hide it. Maybe just tell people you're eating less to lose weight. -
Back to Work Monday - Keeping WLS Private
chasingadream replied to JustWatchMe's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I also kept it quiet except for close family and 2 friends I knew I could trust. I was out on a Thursday and returned on the following thursday. Since I took personal time without pay I just told my boss I was having a medical procedure done and left it at that. People asked questions when I returned but I just told them I was taking care of some medical issues and left it at that. Nobody asked anything further than that. And I work with nice but GOSSIPY females!!!! Hopefully that you just called in sick for 2 days there will be little questioning….if they do you can use any assortment of reasons….stomach virus is always a good one. Do you think people will be questioning you about your absence?? And when they started noticing my weight loss which was a while later I just told them the truth…i've been working hard to eat smaller portions of high Protein and lower carbs and walking, walking, walking…it IS the truth!!! Its harder now that I updated my wardrobe to fit the weight loss that Im getting bombarded with questions…I still use that same explanation as above!!!!! Hope that helps you in some way…hope you are feeling great and good luck returning to work!!! -
Change in attitude toward you after surgery, am I the only one?
whisper43 replied to Anna Montana84's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Sounds like jealousy.. On the same note 5 years ago I started a diet and lost so much weight so fast. And my "best"friends (one of whom I lived with and the other I have been friends with for 15 years) were absolutely horrible to me.. Even sat me down and told me I was "starting to act like the anti-christ". It only took a couple of months for me to realise that I was acting fine. I was happier than ever! It was them!! They were beginning to become very insecure because suddenly I had the confidence to match my personality. And when we went out people FINALLY spoke to me! I suddenly wasn't the "DUFF"! Needless to say I don't need that shit in my life! I am not trying to imply your friends are like that.. Just trying to show that not everyone is what they seem... I really hope they pull their socks up and that they don't turn out to be horrible friends! In the mean time. Hold your head high cause you worthy of a much better squad! -
Increasing My Calorie Intake - Thoughts?
SerendipityHappens replied to FindingElise's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I went right up to 800 calories almost immediately after surgery and I'm currently eating 800-1050 calories a day (usually closer to 800) The difference between 800 calories and 600 calories a day, represents less than two pounds of additional weight loss in a month. Yeah, I'd like to have those two pounds, but I just feel better at around 800 calories so that's where I'm going to stick! -
Increasing My Calorie Intake - Thoughts?
FindingElise posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was hoping to get some input from those of you further out than I. As of yesterday, I've been sleeved for 3 weeks. I've had some problems with pretty severe nausea, but it's under control with medication. As long as I take my prilosec and zofran (an anti nausea med) every 8 hours, I feel great! I had a follow up with my surgeon this afternoon, and he wants to see me increase my calories from 400ish to 800 - 1000 as soon as possible. My primary care doc (who happens to be a weight management specialist) thinks the calorie increase will also help me not be dependent on the zofran. Does this seem a little high for just 3 weeks out? It seems like a lot of people aren't even on soft foods at this point, and are struggling to eat. I don't have a problem with eating more, since I could use the extra calories to fuel my walks and the yoga class I've signed up for, but I want to make the most of my "honeymoon period". Do 800 calories seem reasonable at this point? -

rosita13 replied to FindingElise's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor has me on a 1200 calories a day.. I wonder if this has anything to do with my weight loss being soooo slow... -
At that stage, I was tired seemed like all the time. It just depends on how well you think you can handle the fatigue & trying to learn how to eat away from home. At 3 1/2 weeks I flew 16 hours to Big Island, HI (still here btw) My dr knew I was going before surgery & said I could travel @ 2 weeks to places where there were medical facilities. At my 3 week postop I took a list of things I wanted to do & he cleared me for everything but Scuba (to much weight) and zip lining (the brakes sling you pretty hard sometimes). However, I can snuba, hike lava fields (tough hike), snorkel, deep sea fish, parasail, swim, etc. I have to say, some of those things I wouldn't have been able to do preop, 30 lbs makes a huge difference in how you feel! I haven't had any problems yet except for finding food I'm comfortable trying in public. We have been to Outback 3 times because I can eat there ribs(ok only 1) and they are so tender they melt in your mouth! Btw---grand canyon is awesome but last time we were there it wasn't the easiest walk along the rim. Uneven ground but they were doing work on it so it may be better now. In any case, watch where your walking and don't trip on uneven ground. Ouch!

How are you doing after Thanksgiving?
JCFL replied to Deegil's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi All! Thanksgiving was great. Had the meal with the wife and friends. The food was excellent! I had 3 Oz of white turkey and about a spoonful of 3 or 4 vegetables. I even had about one third of a dinner roll. I took leftovers home and recreated my plate on the scale. It came out to about 7 ounces of food total. Calories were a little high at about 350 but it was a holiday dinner! I did avoid the gravy and creamy vegetables. Went back over for desert 3 hours later. Just had a sliver of pumpkin pie with some Cool Whip. Didn't feel bad I wasn't eating and spent as much time with my plate as the others did. I just didn't go back for seconds! I have to live with my weight loss decision and might as well enjoy it! -
How much wardrobe to get in a size
flamingfeather_fly replied to csawesome's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Maxie dresses are great. They work for the long gest time. Just add a belt or sweater when it gets too big, that will buy you an extra month or two. But for sure Ross, Burlington etc are also good for some quick picks. I agree if you find something you love and can get it in the next size down too, do it. I am going to do that to avoid some of the inevitable questions at work. I don't really want to be the topic of discussion daily or feel obligated to explain myself to everyone who says ..wow, what are you doing to lose weight. Is that wrong? Sent from my SM-N920V using the BariatricPal App -
I was sleeved aug 28th 2012. I am down from 240 to 157. I am so discouraged because I'm not at goal. I bust my ass at the gym. I don't eat 100% perfect but i am still so restricted I can only eat a bite or 2. I stay away from pasta and rice. I eat dairy, meat and protein shakes for the most part. My np said I'm crazy that I'm right on track but the hell I am. I am 5'1" and still have a big belly! I don't get why it won't come off! I swear since I had my gallbladder out last march my body won't give up this fat! I want to have a tummy tuck and a boob job this winter because I start school in the summer but can't till I get to goal! I thought with the weight loss I would feel better about my self but I feel life a failure! I hate hearing everyone say how skinny I am because I'm really not! I don't know what to do I feel so helpless

Can i loose without excerising
☠carolinagirl☠ replied to baba's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i sit at a desk all day long also...am i really a pencil pusher?? i guess i am. anyhow, when i had my surgery, i could hardly walk. i waddled more like it....but my legs/knees hurt bad and i couldnt stand more than 5 min without me having to sit down...so here i am 9 months later, just now up to walking about 2 blocks and i am here to say, you can lose without exercising..that being said...because i cant do (as much) i make sure i do not take in more calories than i can burn off......those excess calories will make me gain or not lose. just do what you can with what you have/can. -
Can i loose without excerising
dawalsh replied to baba's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sadly, I'm physically disabled due to two strokes and severe osteoarthritis. My surgery was on 12/28/13. I lost 33 lbs without exercise. Now, my weight loss has stalled and I'm not losing anymore. I want desperately to exercise but the pain in my knees is so severe that I can't bear weight on my left leg yet. I try to do upper body exercises while sitting. I try leg exercises while lying in bed. I'm hoping as more weight comes off I'll be able to do more exercise. As it stands now, it's going to be a very long hard journey in the weight loss battle. In theory, you can lose weight without exercise but it will take a lot longer! Also, the flabby thigh and arm syndrome are a surety if you don't exercise. Even with exercise there will be loose skin. I need to lose 100 lbs. And hopefully I will be able to see a light at the end of the tunnel and I'll be able to walk better and exercise more. Good luck everyone! -
Did i really need the surgery?
higher replied to jaysmm's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't think YOUR goal weight has anything to do with whether or not this person needed the surgery. There are tons of other factors you know nothing about that could be at play here. A BMI over 30 is still obese. -
Doctor said not to worry about only losing 10lbs at first post op visit
920amy replied to JewelJ's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Personally, I was sleeved in MX so I didn't ahve any post op follow up. I had surgery and flew back home less than a week later. My loss was really slow at first, then accelerated, then stopped, then slow, then stopped....I'm just getting off another plateau now. I'm 15 and a half months out, and I think this final 40 lbs is kicking my a**, but I know that slow and steady will win the race. It's easy to get discouraged and to look at the tickers of other who had surgery the same time as you and wish you had their results already, but the most honest and best advice I can give is: Don't compare yourself to anyone else. Compare yourself to you. When was the last time you lost 10 lbs before surgery, how long did it take? Did it take longer and was it more difficult than the current 10 lbs you're lamenting over? The answers are probably yes and yes. Another thing to remember about your loss now, is that, you're not losing weight, you're GETTING RID of it!! That is 10 lbs you will probably never ever ever EVER see again!! How great is that!?! One day at a time, if you do the right things, Protein first, exercise, you WILL see results, you WILL lose the weight, and you WILL look hot and feel great!! Welcome to the losers bench!! -
How many calories are you eating?
BigViffer replied to cuchas's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am now 5 months out. After meeting with my NUT, the protein goal for me is 90g a day. I still can't hit it every day though. My calories are approximately 1300. They fluctuate. I have slowed down the weight loss, but I don't feel shakey as sleepy all the time either. If MyFitnessPal is to be trusted, my net calories for the day is as low as 500 though. -
