Last Tuesday I emailed my surgeon to let him know that I didn't want to wait and see what the band is going to do, I want to revise to a sleeve. He called me back on Friday and said they would submit the paperwork to my insurance company to get approval. This takes 2-3 weeks and then we can schedule a surgery date. This also puts me in the middle of vacation time hell at work - as my department is very small only one person at a time is allowed to schedule time off. For the months of July and August every available day has already been taken so it looks like I'll need to wait until Sept for surgery. This wouldn't be a bad thing except that with an unfilled band I am STARVING all the time. My stomach actually growls.....I haven't heard that in over four years and it freaks me out! I've put on a solid 3 lbs this week but I am determined to get a grip and not totally screw myself up over the next 12 weeks.....wish me luck!

It's good that you're being so supportive and planning to work on this together. Personally, I think the lap-band makes it easier to adjust emotionally to the changes because the weight loss is more gradual than with the RNY. However, I guess any weight loss can cause emotional issues to surface. I hope that your insurance covers the band. Some companies are more open-minded than you might expect. I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to get approved (I had United Healthcare). Personally, I am not that enthused with the RNY. Since the lap-band is so much safer and less drastic, I think it's a better first choice for most people than the RNY is. You can always go back and get the lap-band revised to an RNY, but if you have trouble after a RNY there are not as many options left. So I'm really glad the lap-band was a choice for me. Good luck

21 months post OP. Severe GERD. Endoscopy shows lax LES and 12 MM Antral nodule
starladustangel replied to starladustangel's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Upper GI barium swallow shows esophageal dysmotility and it also found a hiatal hernia that the endoscopy missed. I can't find out much about the esophogeal dysmotility googling but the radiologist said I am either going to need revision to bypass or nissen fundoplication and that the hernia will need repaired. Waiting now to see what my surgeon says. -
Dr Alamanzo or BariatricPal MX?
utahgirll replied to rrjd39mo's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
no to almanza the butcher. there is a fb page called something like Mexican Weight Loss Surgeons or Weight Loss surgeons in Mexico Thie is a page that does NOT allow anyone to join that is involved with the surgeons, as in, works for thesurgeons in any way. It is a place where people who have had bad experiences can feel free to write about their experiences without hassle. Just google almanza and see what has happened. go with bariatric pal. I hope you are getting the MGB, i've researched it a very long time and it has amazing results, its a short operation and it is reversible and revisable. You get to keep your stomach. good luck. -
Surgeon trying to talk me into band.
clk replied to bigbeauty78's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Do a search for GERD here. We have plenty of folks that have been sleeved with it, too. Acid is an issue for many post op, but for the vast majority it fades before the first year post op. In my case, 4-6 months and I was off my PPI. I've been on it since for my pregnancy and two other short periods when I was under an incredible amount of stress. Other than that, the issue resolved and it's this way for many. Losing too much weight and being malnourished is hardly a concern here. You'll see the occasional voice chime in that they got smaller than they wanted, but it's rare. And you're only malnourished if you choose not to eat adequate nutrition and take your B12, multi and Iron, if needed. I did have an issue with B12 and iron, but I've always had iron/anemia deficiencies. Now I'm on supplements that help me feel better than ever before. Additionally, you'll see many people get revised to sleeve from the band - and many of those people do it in part due to stomach damage and acid problems! My opinion is that your doctor is just more comfortable with the band procedure. This happens and it's true that the sleeve still isn't done at the rate of the older band and bypass. Only you can make this decision, but I can tell you that I was dead set on a band and thought a sleeve was too drastic...until I did six months of research and lurked on the band talk site and saw how miserable people were with the band surgery. Best of luck and I hope that you find a solution that makes you comfortable. I chose to self pay because my insurance covers only band and bypass. ~Cheri -
Surgeon trying to talk me into band.
relax#3 replied to bigbeauty78's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had a band to sleeve revision. Do not get the band. Unless you really want to have another surgery soon. I have spoken to hundreds of bandsters who are not happy. I was at goal when I had my revision, but needed my band out. I haven't become malnourished. Actually I am doing sooooo much better since I can eat proper foods without throwing up. Keep looking for another surgeon. -

better to travel once for a sleeve than two or three times to get it revised. -
Two Weeks & Regret!
renjames replied to kristlynngirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
In my last post I see that the voice dictation didn't work that well is it said I did not lose any weight honestly that is not true, I lost 30 kg that could not lose any more and I needed to lose another 20, Hence why I went to a revision with bypass. -
Revision of RNY
Losingit2018 replied to Notthe1sttime's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am going to follow this as I have not yet heard of a bypass being revised. Good luck in whatever you choose. The weight loss battle is a very difficult one. -
I hadn’t heard of it either & it wasn’t an option with my surgeon. Is it a Sydney thing?? I wonder if stomach stretching after sleeve was either an old wives tale or to scare patients to encourage them to eat correctly (portion size, frequency, etc.) so that wouldn’t happen. I do recall Dr Nowzaradan operating again on one of his patients saying they had stretched their tummy again but they had been eating exactly the same way as they always had: huge portions, many times a day every day for a long time. So they deliberately worked to stretch it again. No surgery would have helped them. As others have said it sounds similar to lapband (gastric banding) which are not performed as often because of higher risk of complications. There are a lot of people here who have had to have a revision to sleeve or more commonly to bypass because of issues with their band. On googling I noticed that some weight loss clinics don’t identify the possible side effects of the minimiser but did discover one (Perth) clinic that did: … placing a ring around the top of the sleeve can cause obstructive symptoms much like adjustable gastric banding resulting in difficulty swallowing and food intolerance. It can cause dilatation of the top of the sleeve which we consider to be the most critical part. It may also increase the risk of reflux, volume regurgitation and possible aspiration. But if you’ve done your research, weighed the pros & cons, and you know yourself & your challenges with eating best, & your surgeon supports you, it is ultimately your decision. All the best.

So so angry!!!!!
sleevedinthe817 replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Awwwww man. I’ve never responded to your posts about your acid reflux issues, but I’ve read them and I was really, really hoping the revision would immediately bring you some relief. It stinks that it still seems to be a problem, but it’s early, right? Maybe a little time? I hope something works for you! -
I am so excited to revise in 13 days. I lost 100 lb with the band to bmi 21 but regained 50lb due to slippage And pregnancies. I feel that I lost the weight first time round in a really unhealthy way basically because it was so hard to eat protein and veggies! In the last two years I have really educated myself on fitness and nutrition but like all of us I just can't lose the weight (portion control is non existent!) I feel like the sleeve will give me the right appetite for the kind of life I want to live with the added benefit of no sliming, pb'ing restricted foods, fills and getting stuck.

What are your differences between Year 1, Year 2, and Year 3?
LSF replied to Queen of Crop's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
As I'm approaching my revision surgery, I found this page fascinating to read because these are my fears - the future years with the sleeve since I failed with the band. I do have a question though - what is the 5:2 that you all keep talking about? Your stories have been inspiring and I hope I can be as successful as you. Lori -

I do and it scares me when it happens. My revision surgery is scheduled for june 12th. Are u going to get completely unfilled ahead of time? I think im going to ask when I see my dr in may. -
September 2013 sleevers..Requesting sleeve buddies :)
montiep replied to JodiAnn210's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey all you September Sleevers. How is everyone doing? I am 3 weeks PO today. Feel great! Back to the gym this am. I have been walking in the mornings since its so nice here in Tejas. (rare) So just did some cycling, and some arms. Tried not to do anything that would pull on the tummy. I am down 20 lbs. Which 7 was pre op diet. But happy. I know I will loose slower since I was revision. But if I can stay 20 lbs a month, I will be one happy camper. Lets all check in and see how everyone is doing now that we are on the loser's bench. -
I am having a revision from Lapband to RNY. I have my preop appointment with him on the 29th so I should find out more then. I have not seen a nutritionist as of yet but it would be great if he had one in the office. I just bought a case of protein drinks from Costco - 30g per serving of protein and only 1g of sugar and 5g of carbs. I had to rely on protein drinks after my lapband surgery 5 years ago.

Hi- i had by band in '04.... At 244 never lost more 40 pounds. Always chokes always puked. Got to point that i felt like i was drowning each night...i was too scared to sleep sometimes. Finally went to talk to my band surgeon to ask what options i had. He just said " what do u want from me.. I gave u what you wanted, to eatless why are complaining!" .... Ahhhh . I went straight away to the internet to look for my options. I was lucky to find that a top surgeon from Houston had returned home to Israel. It took me 4 months to get all the paper work sorted out. I had (at 282 pounds) the revision op plus gallbladder removal in the same op. i found the recovery good, not too hard . Now i feel , seven months out, great. 105 pounds down, fitter than i have ever been. The band was like a mediEVIL torture device!! It should be banned!! I feel like going back to the band surgeons waiting room and telling them of their options!!

List of Band to Bypass Patients
chele6378 replied to pebulz's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I was banded in January of 2009. I choose band over bypass then because I wanted something reversible and adjustable since I was planning on having another baby. I lost 40 pounds in the first year. Not stellar but good. Then I started having reflux. I got stuck on every food. I threw up or slimed every time I ate. I turned to slider foods and gained it all back. Every last pound and a few extra now reside with me I started to look into revision last year. I met with a new surgeon who took all the Fluid out of my band so the reflux would subside a little and so I could eat. I love the new surgeon! He told me he sees a lot of people like me. So I have my insurance approval but I had to schedule my surgery out in December so I cam finish school. I'm excited and scared. I know the recovery is worse with bypass but I'll be so happy to have this band out. I am excited to not feel like there's a ball constantly jabbed under my ribs. I'll be happy to eat with out being asked if I'm stuck again. Lots of luck to us all on the journey! -
To be quite honest, you can cycle through all the prescription ppis until you hopefully find something that works, but at the end of the day if nothing works and you continue to reflux the only option is to revise to Gastric Bypass. It's mess to be honest and my acid reflux is slowly going out of control si in a couple of years if none of the meds work I will need a third wls. For now if you're not on prescription meds for acid reflux get your hands on some asap.

I'm you're twin same story please don't get discouraged with a revision the weight loss is good first 5 months then slows way down we are different than straight bypass people. ..

Looking for a buddy who understands regain.
pamastrologer replied to smilinred's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I am 16 years out, had a revision that didn’t work. I went through all the motions as those whose surgeries were successful. Mine wasn’t. A dr there told me that I would only lose 40 lbs. He had no idea of the sacrifices I made. Instead of a revision, which took a waiting period of 14 months, I did not get it done. I regained weight after complications of another surgery. We regain weight for many reasons. So, I felt like the only one who left the hospital empty handed and sad. No one is stupid for trying to be healthier. I was so upset at this “another failure” that I decided to “reset” my mind instead of thinking about the stress of regain and revision. My driving force is what motivated me. These textbook doctors and nutritionists don’t know what’s in our head. They see you for 5 minutes, get their $300-$400, and I’m left to deal with this myself. Even my family doesn’t help very well. I decided that since the drs can’t help me, I’ll be damned if I’m going to fail myself. I’m going through the motions as if I’m a brand new patient, regardless of my hunger or very painful legs. I’m going to prove that jerk dr who told me that I would only lose 40 pounds. What an idiot. I lost weight before, regained and they can’t fix it. Well, I’ll start all over, no matter what it takes. If I binge on diet chewing gum to get through the food urge, fine. It is what it is. I know what I could have done better the first time around. We have another chance because I do not believe in failure, no matter what the circumstances are. Plus, I’m probably older than you, so now I’m told more bs about age. I’m going to prove them wrong, and I’ve already done searches like MyFitnessPal.com. We can’t do anything about the past, but we can control our future. I hope this helps you in some way. - Pam
