    1/2cup of food

I'm 4 weeks gastric bypass and my SUGGESTED diet plan intake amounts for an egg is 1/4-1/2 cup. But the operative word is "suggested." You don't have to eat what the diet plan says. Most likely you may never will. I have not once been able to eat the suggested amount. You have to slow down and really concentrate on what your body is telling you. I stop when all of a sudden I have this overall body "blah" feeling, or when I look at my meal and think "meh, I'm done." Remember your brain has to catch up to your stomach to realize it's full... by that time it could be too late; your stomach could be over full and you might find yourself unwell and/or experiencing dumping syndrome. Good luck and keep working with your tool

Liquid only day of and 2 days post op purée for 4 weeks. Then soft for weeks. A day o did not adhere and had a bite or 2 of a shrimp and I paid for it. I am sure I plugged my pouch I had severe abdominal pain for 12hr and threw up at least twice. Follow the plan. At about week 3-4 I plateau but it turned around I am down 39lbs. I feel I'm behind but not gaining

Lawn work aka I better have lost 5 lbs!

I am 3 years post-op RNY gastric bypass. One of my projects after surgery was to construct an underground shelter. As a result I moved a lot of gravel and cement landscaping blocks. So a couple years ago I moved 100,000 pounds of gravel by hand along with around 60,000 pounds of concrete blocks and then last year I moved about the same amount. After surgery, I found that I had a lot more stamina [ability to perform physical labor] than before surgery. I am 67 going on 68 years old and I developed the stamina of when I was in my 30's.

    Bmi Is 60

You are going to be so happy, because this is going to work. I am 5'1" and was 246. Not quite as high as you, but close enough. You might want to check out The World According to Eggface. She was 5'2" and 300+ pounds. She is a bypass patient, but she gave me hope that us obese petite people can be complete successes. My doctor wanted me to get bypass because of my high BMI, but I think the sleeve is the better choice. We lose just fine and are healthier without the malabsorbtion.

    Hurts when I drink water

My nurse/nutritionist said that this is due to the alkaline in the Water. She suggests adding lemon to change the pH or drinking Crystal Light until you can stomach it. Fyi, she is a bypass patient. Sent from my SM-G930T using the BariatricPal App
  8. I had hernia surgery at the same time so it took me longer to start working out. My bypass was March 26th. I ride 10 to 12 miles on a bike every morning and walk my dog 20 minutes every night. I start light weight training in 10 days. Don’t be in a hurry. You have the rest of your life. January 1, 2018 379 lbs, September 1, 2018 266 lbs. I have 77 lbs more to obtain my goal, but I’m giving myself 12 months to get there.

    Milestone

I realize that my current weight is higher than some people’s start weight - but today, I broke the 200s. A lifetime of being obese, this is monumental for me! I converted my sleeve to bypass on 9/11, was 314 on surgery day. My high weight was 460. This journey is long and winding, take pleasure in every step of the way!

    Drinking Problem

Joy, I am a heavy drinker, no not alcohol, Water with crystal light, and I drink constantly, wondering if I'm pre-diabetic. Anyhoo, I am struggling with not going to be able to drink once I'm banded, during meals, I know this is how to lose the weight and I can do it, I know I can and will, but I simply get thirsty while eating. A gastric bypass patient told me a trick: she takes a glass of ice and when she feels the urge to drink, she take a pc of ice and puts it in her mouth and gets her mouth wet and then takes it out. I think this may work for me. I can't wait till I'm banded and want so much for this to work and will work the program. Congrats on your weight loss.
  11. My name is Heather and I've recently decided to get the Roux En Y Gastric Bypass surgery. After some careful consideration and thousands of failed diet attempts I know that this is the best option for me, it is the only option that will save my life. I've struggled with weight since I can remember, I've always been bigger and over the past 5 years it's become harder and harder to lose weight and try to keep it off (something I've never been good at). I have a complicated relationship with food and my insurance of course requires that I be on a 6 month diet (Even though I literally just came off of one that I put myself on in January through Weight Watchers after I had my baby in November) it's frustrating because even though I know it's company policy it's like I have to roll my eyes and groan and say, "Another diet?" I'm sure this will be different but it's still dreadful. I attend my first seminar June 17th and I am really looking forward to gathering all of the information I need from Dr. Kligman of University of Maryland. The only thing that has me nervous is the psych eval. mainly because I was on antidepressants and antipsychotics when I was a teenager, I isolated myself during middle school and high school mainly because of my weight and lack of confidence. I eventually was weaned off of my medication when I was 18 and had stopped going to the therapist because I had had enough. I had spent years of being on medication and seeing this doctor and that doctor and nothing helped, nothing improved and the weight kept piling on. I just wanted to be normal, to feel normal and the medication did not do that for me. So I'm a little weary of the whole psych eval thing because of my history. I also cannot tell more than two family members at this time because the rest of my family will not understand my decision. They are very judgemental and will do nothing but give me negative comments and I don't want to hear it anymore, this decision is a positive one and I'm happy with it. I am almost 26 years old and I have a almost 7 month old daughter, I want to be around for her and be able to take her places and do things with her, I don't want weight to control my life anymore.

    Tired of unwanted advice

I myself am worried about the unwanted advice, partly because my BMI is around 34, and some "don't think I need the band". I am still in the process of getting my band approved, but I have chosen only to tell my husband, and 2 close friends. Both of which have had the gastric bypass. They are supportive and understand why I'm choosing to do this. After one of my close friends had the bypass, and hearing all the "advice" they had for her, I decided I'd rather keep it to myself, or just share with the selected few.

    Covered Or Not

They also told me that it was due to the elections that my employer choose while setting up our new insurance. So my employer opted out of the lap band, but opted in for full bypass.
  14. Ms. Maui, let's be fair. That stat was true of the older lap bands wasn't it? And while you are at it, can you tell me what the reversal rates are for Gastric Bypass and Gastric Sleeves? Oh, wait they can't be reversed can they? And as long as you are interested in stats, would you care to let us know what the mortality rates are between the different types of bariatric surgery? Any bets which surgery has fewer patients die within 30 days of the surgery? Now, I don't have an axe to grind, and even if what you said was actually true of the lap band that I had installed, I would still have gone ahead with the surgery. I like choice in my life, and with the lap band I have a choice. With GB and sleeve, there is not going back, no further choice. Now, with that said, if my band fails and they can't put another band in. I will probably revise to a sleeve, if that fails (they do), I will opt for something else. But you see as a band patient, i have that choice. My friends wife who had GB and makes her self sick 4-5 times a week with dumping, doesn't have a choice anymore. http://www.obesitylapbandsurgery.com/statmain.html

    Sleeved at last !!!!!

Hiya, yes I was sleeved on Feb 1st so we are sleeve twins !!!!! How are you doing a week out ? I'm still doing great, maybe could still get a little more Water down but I'm not pushing it too much, don't want to hurt my tiny new precious tummy !! LOL I was going to go out for a walk today but the weather has been really awful. It was really windy and raining all day. Tomorrow looks like a better day to try it so I'll be putting my best foot forward !! I've decided that, like our Queen, I'm now going to have 2 birthdates. My real one in November and my new one Feb 1st each year, a good idea don't you think. It is,afterall, the day we were re-born into a new life. Let me know how everything is going won't you ? I hope you are feeling as good as I am. Take care Love Angela x

    Alcohol

The first time I tried alcohol after GB was 2 years post op. I could have after 1 year but chose to hold off. Now, I love having wine when I go out. You must be very careful when you do because following bypass, just a few sips and you can feel it. A whole glass has me at the tipping point. My surgeon actually made me sign a contract that I would not touch the stuff for a minimum of 1 year post op. This is just me but I would be concerned that you are not fully healed yet and would abstain for now. Not sure what the alcohol could do to your new pouch. Most of the wait is because they do not want anyone transferring food addiction to alcohol and it is very very common after WLS. I can honestly say I never used to think about drinking and did it rarely, now I love a glass and sometimes two every time I go out for dinner. I could see how it could become a problem but am watching it closely.
  17. Looks like they don't cover open lap band or VSG surgeries, whether they are laparoscopic or open procedures. They probably cover the bypass or other similar. It depends on the persons policy. My policy covers but it's a whole bunch of hoops to jump through and u have to go through their BariatricPal program. So it varies

    Nov 2010 bandsters

I had my banding November 18th, 2010. Tomorrow, January 4th, 2011, I get my first adjustment. I am so glad I found this site yesterday. Having read through so many posts has helped settle my nerves. Thanx to all

    Nov 2010 bandsters

i was banded on November 1st. I got my first fill on November 30th. I have a 10 CC band and got 4 CC's. So far I have some restriction but I know that I am nowehre near where I need to be. I go back for my second fill on January 3rd. My doctor says it typically takes 3 to 5 fills to hit the sweet spot ( between 6 and 8 CC's full ). Good luck to everyone! Keep up the good work and support.
  20. I totally understand! I had my surgery on November 11 and even though I previously had a lap band, I was nervous about this surgery. I agree, I was sore and tired but not the overwhelming pain I was afraid of. You will do fine, best wishes! Diane

    Undecided

Hello, You gotta do your own research and decide what's best for you. Go through the threads here, as you will find loads of information. I also encourage you to check out other forums for those who had the bypass. Don't let anyone tell you what's best for you regarding your decision. You are the one who will have to live with the band or the bypass. You know your own body and what you are capable of. You are the higher authority of yourself - so only you can decide. I wish the best during your decision making process!!!!

    So Tell The Truth . . .

Bedhead, well yes and no,. Because there was a portion of her stomach that was left in (as it is when you have gastric bypass) and she evidently was an acid maker, she developed an ulcer (probably more than one) She did not go back to her surgeon. We had been wondering about why the boys said she was sleeping so much during the day, it was because she was anemic because the ulcer was bleeding. All of her pain symtoms were mimicing gall bladder disease. So, after several trips to the ER they took it out. Long story short, she came home on a Thursday after surgery and died that Saturday when the ulcer perforated. It is my opinion that this was a needless death. She should have gone back to her surgeon who should have recognized the symptoms, she should have listened to her body about how sick she was (but she hated sickness and tried to ignore it) We saw a change in her appearance, hair, skin tone, etc but could not get her to go. The physician who did the gall bladder surgery also does bariatric surgery so he should have recognized the possibility instead of just doing the surgery without any additional workup. That is one reason that my husband and I (who have both had sleeve surgery, no stomach left in) went to a surgeon who does nothing but bariatric surgery. Anyway, bad things happen all of the time for all sorts of reasons to all types of people. As for her boys, it has been almost four years and they are doing really well. The youngest does have some issues, but did before she died (he is a little bit on the spectrum and a little ocd) They have the most amazing step mother who lost her Mother the year before our daughter died so she understands that type of loss. We feel very blessed that our son in law had the wisdom to marry such a wonderful person.
  23. Blund, Mourning food (high carbohydrates - Desserts, sodas, chips, bread, rice, Pasta, etc.) is not unusual after weight loss surgery nor is having last suppers prior to. I think we can all admit to having a last supper just before embarking on yet another diet. Had I chosen Gastric Bypass (Roux-en-Y or RNY) as my weight loss surgery, my last supper would have consisted of solely a dessert table of all my favorites and that probably would have been my Breakfast, lunch and dinner for at least two days. Gastric Bypass patients have an even greater challenge nutritionally because their stomach is reduced to the size of a thumb and the intestine of the rewired stomach can't tolerate sugar -- if they're lucky. Foods high in carbohydrates cause them to become painfully and violently ill. So they have to really watch their carbs or pay the price. You've probably heard it called "dumping syndrome." A prior acquaintance of mine who opted for the gastric bypass, and was about eight months post-op, tried a sliver of my cake one day and had to go home for the rest of the day. I didn't know about the various surgeries being performed at the time, but I made a mental note that if I ever had WLS it wouldn't be THAT one. In fact, if I ever have to have the band removed, I would rather have the vertical gastrectomy over the gastric bypass.

    tricare?

Are they also covering it because your base doesn't have bariatric? I'm trying to go through Womack in Fort Bragg. I live about 3 hrs away. My dr office has sent in 2 requests for referrals and I've been approved both times to see a local Dr to see if weight loss surgery is necessary. But I don't want to go this route because I know Tricare doesn't cover the sleeve and I was told this by a tricare rep. Womack said my Dr isn't wording the requests correctly so that I can be treated at Womack. They said my Dr needs to send in a request to Tricare to be evaluated and treated on base. I see my family Dr On Friday and I hope I can get this straight. I would be a lot farther in the process if I decided to go gastric bypass, but I really want the sleeve.
