I want to reach my personal goal! Help!
JessicaDiane1021 replied to DivaK's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Also I do the shakes because it's really hard to meet protein with just regular food. I do 2 a day. -
I didn't have to do the liquid diet, but did have a VERY strict Dr. I am glad that I did (do)!! He is very NO NONSENSE and expects you to follow his rules. This is a VERY SERIOUS surgery and you should do what they say!! You could have serious complications if you don't!! He gave me a low carb, low fat, high protein diet to follow and advised me to do it...didn't say I HAD TO, but advised me to and to lose 25lbs. I could not come to see him until I did. AND would not be given a surgery date until I did!! That motivated me!! I lost 55!! If you have a Dr. that is strict be glad! At least you know you have one that is not going to operate on just anyone to make money! That should make you feel good! At least you know he cares! I'm glad mine is the way he is and have told him so many times! Kelly

First nut class
Susan66 replied to newmebithebypass's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello, Sorry for the late response. In my nutrition meetings we go over the basics of nutrition, whats a smart choice, whats a bad food choice, the importance of Protein, etc. For the first 4 months I am seeing a staff nutritionist, the last 2 month visits I will see the Bariatric Program Director who is also a nutritionist. I've been to a few of her support meetings that she hosts & I think that when I meet one on one with her I will truly gain something from her sessions. She has so much to offer in her support groups I'm looking forward to my one on one sessions with her. How are you doing? -
Wondering if anyone could help me figure this out?
Foxbins replied to GonnaLoseIt's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would count all of the Protein grams and guess at the carbs. If you eat 1/4 of the veggies, then count 6 carbs--1/3 of the veggies would be 8. If you want something quick to eat when you are pressed for time, what about steaming or boiling some shrimp? They are good cold with a squirt of lemon and a drizzle of olive oil. Or hard-boiled eggs--I used to boil a bunch at the beginning of the week and make egg salad or just eat them with salt and pepper. They were ready-made no matter what I decided. Also, you could make some turkey chili on the weekend and eat that during the week. As someone who used to live on frozen prepared meals, the food I fix from scratch tastes so much better to me, and I'm not getting all that sodium from the boxed meals. Just a thought! -

3 weeks post op & no protein yet !
LivingFree! replied to Antonia_megan's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have no experience with the hernia issue, but it sounds extremely dangerous to me for ANY WLS patient to not be getting any Protein in the first critical 3-4 weeks post-op. Antonia_megan, if I read your post right and you are not getting ANY PROTEIN down, please call back your surgeon's office. You have to have protein to survive and heal. Take good care and keep us posted how you are doing. -

lylabelle replied to Antonia_megan's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
One of the girls who had surgery yesterday had a hitial hernia. She was told Clear Liquids only for 15 days. then 10 days of regular liquid, then on to puree for 10 days. You might want to back away from the non clear Protein drinks and use isopure or unjury that are clear and should help with the mucus. -
AM I the only one on this forum that has had surgery in the last 6 months and is having TROUBLE WITH WEIGHT LOSS?
LivingFree! replied to JewelJ's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi jewelj, I agree with what the others have said--stress is so tough on our bodies, especially as you are recovering from this major weight loss surgery . But you have taken a couragous step in reaching out to friends here on BariatricPal. Like others have suggested, please give us more detail about what you are eating in your typical day so we can help. But meanwhile, as you know, the MOST IMPORTANT is to be getting your Protein (60-80g or whatever is recommended by your surgeon) and your 64 oz of water/liquid every day. And I could not agree more that taking care of yourself FIRST is what you must do in order to be able to best care for your husband. I don't mean to make that sound "so easy" because I know it is not. You really haven't had a lot of time and opportunity yet since your surgery that it takes to do all these lifestyle eating habits changes with everything else that is on your plate. And all these adjustments take time. Be gentle with yourself and keep posting here and you'll get ideas to help you learn to cope better day by day. Take care. -

I am wondering can you stretch out the upper pouch if you eat to much. I have been consentrating on Protein and veggies but I do like my popcorn. I am thinking I may have eaten to much popcorn and dont some damage. I would like to loose about 20 more pounds and am having trouble getting it off. Help me please -
Not Eating Well (6 weeks - post op)
Inner Surfer Girl replied to Kaishek's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Welcome to the site. It is hard and counterintuitive, but you have got to get in your nutrition in order to lose weight but also to heal from surgery. Follow your program. Focus on getting in at least 64 oz of Fluid, every day. Focus on reaching your Protein target, every day. Take your Vitamins and supplements as directed. Exercise when cleared. (Walking is a great way to start.) -
Not Eating Well (6 weeks - post op)
JamieLogical replied to Kaishek's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You need to measure your food and eat on a schedule in the early weeks/months. It's the only way you can make sure you are getting enough calories and protein. You won't feel "hunger" and you'll associate food with discomfort, but you need to fuel your body! Are you doing any exercise yet? If/when you start to introduce intense exercise, you'll probably want to be up over 800 calories a day. -
Getting Banded April 16th, Any Tips or Advice?
jenhrvy20 replied to WishUponABand's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey Steph! Don't be nervous at all. You will not remember a thing. It goes very smoothly and you will do great! The pain is bearable. Not fun, but a lil pain meds will do you just fine. I was actually just banded on 4/7/09. I have already lost 19 lbs. YAY! I take in about 800-1000 calories a day, but that is different for everyone I'm sure. I was directed to take in about 60g of protein a day. Take a good multivitamin and maybe a calcium supplement as well. Your doctor may have already told you this. I like the protein shakes called EAS: Advantage Chocolate Fudge. They taste good and they have 17g of protein with only 110 calories. I am so excited for you!!! I am still learning how to use my band. It is definately a learning process. Good luck and I wish you all the best  -
The sleeve is a better ans safer option, most doctors are now going with the sleeve more than the bypass or the band, like you my first option was the band but after talking to the consultant I agreed to the sleeve he has put all my fears to bed, speak to your consultant tell him your fears he is the only one that can talk you through this, I wish you all the best in your journey, were all here for you xx

Oh no! Bridal functions! Need advice ASAP
hookemhorns replied to hookemhorns's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Buying the other girls lots of shots...best (and most expensive) advice ever!! Sounds like you understand the gravity of the situation. haha my god, I am so with you on mourning the beer. I think it's so sad how I'm already thinking about how different superbowl sunday is going to be for me. My bf said the same thing. He's still unsure of this whole thing because it is so new. I'm sure he won't be dissatisfied with the results! call me a guy, but beer and football are...err...were...my staples in life. Guess I'm going to have to find another one.I actually can't drink wine but I will try some of the other options you suggest. Thanks for the comments -
I have a little over a week before my big day. I bought several individual packets of protein drinks from my clinic to see what I might like best so I can purchase to have after surgery. Well so far they all gag me! Today I tried Bariatric Advantage iced latte. Sounds and smells great but the taste about made me throw up! I even have some crushed ice in it to try to help. If there is a shake that anybody likes, please share the name. I know I will need the nutrition after surgery but this stuff will make it impossible for me to get down.

I was talking to a friend about Protein powders yesterday. He has dental implants and has been on a soft or liquid diet since the surgery. He suggested mixing the vanilla and the chocolate premier Proteins at a 50 50 ratio. He said that the chocolate is way too chocolaty but it helped if he cut it with the vanilla. food for thought.

Eating when you're not hungry?
MINI-Me replied to Smelly Melly's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am just about 6 weeks out ... I too was a grazer. I thought about food A LOT. In some ways, I still do on the losing phase. I think about how to get in my Protein, Water, etc. It really is hard to understand, but I don't crave food at all. When I do, a bite or two does the trick. I do incorporate a few Snacks in my diet. String cheese in the afternoon is great - low calorie and add protein. I agree working with a nutritionist or pysch is important. If those aren't available, use an on-line tool like myfitnesspal.com - put everything that crosses your lips into the tool. It REALLY helps. -
I've liked the premier protein shakes. I mean I really like them! I guess that's a good thing but if I just think about them I want to go grab one. That will most helpful post surgery.

This is my main go to meal. I love their chili. With 210 calories and 17 grams of Protein. Sent from my Android Phone using RNYTalk

2 weeks post op-what were you eating?
Paigey replied to babyk's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am now two weeks post op and just started with the mushies in the last couple of days. I am still starting my day off with a Protein shake. I think it helps me to control any hunger pangs I might get before lunchtime. I've been able to tolerate most soups, but only in small quantities. I tried some homemade mac and cheese and that did okay for me, but I should have stopped about to two spoons before I actually did. Sometimes it feels like there is a rock sitting right between my breasts in my chest. Cottage cheese with a little salt and pepper is very filling, as is the Yoplait 100 calorie yogurts. If I am still hungry or just want to eat, I either have a sugar free popsicle or sugar free Jello. I've printed out several crock pot recipes that I'd like to try this week, but I'm really just scared to eat. It feels like the band is stopping me from eating too much, but since I haven't had a fill yet, I wonder how much of it is real and how much of it is just in my head. -
I picked up some Optifast too. I don't like protein shakes either - bluergh. And yeah I won't stick to just 3 shakes like a diet - I'll have as much liquid as I need to not be hungry, coz yeah, I figure it isn't about trying to lose weight but to give the band a chance to reposition. Coffee, tea, soups, wine etc are all still on the menu for Monday!

Mortified of band failure
2muchfun replied to blacktxbelle's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Erosion is less than 1% of complications with the band. It's usually caused by stomach ulcers at the point of pressure from the band. And can be exacerbated if the patient eats too much too often. Filling the pouch with too much food consistently can cause dilation, erosion and slips. Sometimes it just happens that the patient's body is rejecting the band. All WLS options have risks but most can be mitigated if patients follow doctor's orders and behave wisely. You have to realize that we're a patient population with eating problems and disorders. WLS does not always eliminate those crazy eating demons we all share. The alternative is to not have surgery and go on more diets that fail. Of course, remaining obese has it's own long list of complications and health issues. tmf
