Needing Some Support

I couldn't agree with you more, Randy. It's easy to get impatient... my weight loss for this week 6/10 of a pound... but, we didn't gain it overnight and we won't lose it overnight. I chose the band over bypass because I thought it was a healthier option and with that comes slower weight loss, but healthier, in my opinion. I'm 5 days away from my 6 month "bandiversary" and 6/10 of a pound away from a total of 60 pounds gone so far. I still have a long way to go, but baby steps are okay as long as it's a steady downward trend. We can't get discouraged. We're in this for the long haul! You're right... first priority... healing. Then, we do have to watch our calories, we do have to watch the quality of food we are eating... we all know this... protein first, then veggies, keep carbs to a minimum, watch liquid calories (I'm enjoying a small glass of wine at the moment... SMALL), and... a biggie.... EXERCISE!! That's important. Those of us with extra weight often have joint problems and mobility issues, arthritis, etc. My exercise is water aerobics and I LOVE it!! But, find an exercise you can do and be consistent with it and it will help the weight to come off. Hang in there gang!! We're going to do this!!:cool::eek::Banane30::Banane28:

OMG how did you all decide

I did not go for the bypass because everyone I've seen that has had it looks so sickly and I didn't want my insides permanently changed! My mom had one and she throws up all the time and my aunt had to have her whole stomach removed and her intestines routed to her esophogus - so that wasn't even a option in my mind! There is a girl that I worked with that had a bypass done 6mo after I had my band. To date she has lost alot more weight than I have and unfortunately people look at me like I should be like her. No matter how I try to explain that the weightloss with banding is slower (which is good), I think they think of me as a failure at times. Well - I don't work there anymore and I stopped by there last week because I was going to lunch with my friend. They haven't seen me since December and I had a good fill in October and have lost quite a bit! It was nice to hear the comments and make them eat their words from before! :Dancing_wub:

OMG how did you all decide

Hi, You sound like me, so I am responding to your question! I have a dieting history like you. At first, I got the band because I just had an issue getting healthy organs bypassed...just a personal deal for me. WHAT I LEARNED from having my band for 3.5 years now, is that it was the BEST choice FOR ME. WHY? Because I honestly think I would have lost all my weight fast with a bypass and then gained it back. The band has taught me (and teaches me daily) that I may not be perfect at my eating, but with the restriction I can make choices that help me lose weight or not. It has taken me years to modify the way I eat, the way I think of eating, and I think with the bypass, I would have reverted back to "non-dieting me" and gained it back. The band is much more forgiving (I think) and I can "start" take a break "start" up again and not gain weight back. I am still losing and loving my band. It was the best choice for me! I hope you can make a good decision for you!
4. Patience is a virtue, but at 73 the rest of my vitue is long gone, living on grit, determination, 12 hours of TPN a night and hoping my story will end as well as my Bari-Bud 🐭🐱(aka MouseCat), so so proud of Her success! Oh got to believe it's only a Matter of Time, never planned to be like this 5 months out from surgery. And oh it started out So Good , 2 weeks in. my stoma strictured, the ulcerations started , they should have known , I already had a gastric ulcer I named Hector in the stomach part bypassed, went in with DX of Gastritis, took me off my PPI Dexilent, put me on their ineffectual Omeprazole, may work for many, never did for ME and I have been hanging on the tail of a tornado every since! And when will it END, IDK but sure wish I did! So I chug-a-chugging along on a limited Stage 2 diet, liquids and thin purees once a day, sustained largely on the calories and nutrition from TPN fed through a PICC line in my upper Left Arm. Been there for 2 months yesterday, possibly for 2 more months, at least that was the last recommendation I was given last Friday at my EGJ, 9th endoscopy lifetime, 6th at OSU. Well to be technically correct Transnasally July 2013 EGD June 2015 EGD December 2017 those 3 were at my local Community Hospital KCH in Mount Vernon EGD immediately prior to RnY surgery September 5 2018 by Dr Needleman EGJs because post RnY duodenum is no longer accessible, only your jejunem, the 2nd section of Small Intestine Those were October 12, October 26, November 9th, November 28, that's when I was bad enough I was hospitalized and PICC l8ne inserted next day, all these done by Sabrena Noria MD, my surgeons partner who just 💞doing endoscopies. And lastly January 25 2019 by their Senior Resident Noah J Stinson MD, Dr Noria was over- booked, I guess. He wasn't too bad, this time they attempted stretching my stomal stricture part way, did it work permanently? Doubtful, Dr Noria tried in October, snapped right back where it was before, a virtual pinhole that lets only liquids through. Does THIS happen often? Oh I am so dang special I nearly stink, and I did not request to be! I WANT to be like all the others out there, my surgery day twins are on Stage 4 or Normal diets, and I'm lagging behind. Wahhh!😪😥💦
5. I also had no pre op diet, but your girl did one anyways!!!! I needed a jump-start, a transition and I felt a little more accomplished (but... I was not a revision) Countdown time!!!! Yay!!!!🎉🎉🎉
6. How are you doing after the revision?

Defeated After 4 Months?

No no no.You are just going through the same thing a lot of us felt when we were healed! Now is of course the critical decision making time.Do you want to succeed or not?How do I get back on track and stay there? Was all the suffering I've gone through for nothing and if I dont beat this now, then what? What is our options really as you cna revise to another surgery but that is no guarantee for success either. We can all eat a lot of carbs. And if we eat carbs with Protein we can even eat more protein, well I can. When I eat dense protein only,I can only eat a small portion so that should be where you start again. Protein first. What I do when I fall totally off plan,I reset.Which means this for me.For 3 days,I eat protein only. For meals, for Snacks. And I dont limit my meals to 3 but I snack on protein when I want to.By day 3 you dont feel like eating the snacks anymore and then you are ready to incorporate veggies again, and after 3 days of protein only,to me the veggies seems like heaven..lol I doubt your sleeve has stretched already at 4 months out. You've just fallen into bad habits and thank goodness your tummy will still restrict you if you eat your Proteins first. Call it a carb detox. Its tough but you can make up your own rules and your own plan and then you decide to stick to it.Take responsibility for what you eat one meal at a time. You can do this! I often read this thread of "what have you eaten today, sleevers?" and then I wonder what they would say if I would post what I ate that day?Failure! Not true.We are human and sometimes have to learn hard lessons. Now seems to be yours.Mine was at 5 months out. You can get back on track, you dont have to eat what you can eat, just because you can. This can be in your control.I can really relate to how you feel.Took me quite a while before I stopped being mad for even being able to eat all the junk I could until I gave myself a good talking to and decide to beat the flab for once and for all. So,I'll be waiting for your post that says...back on plan and feeling great!

First Official Fill and not doing good!

To make a long story short 252 lbs at the time of surgery on 9/24/09. First fill scheduled for 11/17 but found that port had flipped. Revision on 1/14/10. My current weight is 218 and I had my first fill on 3/1/10. I have been on liquids since. but barely.. they tried 2cc but it was too tight and took someout so I believe that I have a bit of 1 cc.. and the liquid is so hard to go down.. I am going to try to go on mushies for dinner tonight because I am so starving!! does anyone have any suggestions? Also the protein was too dense to go down as well.

Port hiding

Tanya, My port is all topsy turvy. Not really flipped but definitely impossible to access in the normal office visit. I have to get flouro everytime and the doctor sees no reason to do port revision surgery because of it at this point. I actually am happy I get the flouro everytime. I get to see the position of everything and that it is still all fine and that makes me feel more secure. Let us know how the next visit goes. Teresa

I have to make a decision..

Lizzy, I'd love to have plication but my insurance doesn't cover it. It would be my top choice over all. I have medicare and uhc and neither cover it (last I checked). Kristey, if I have wls, I HAVE to have the sleeve..or bypass..which I would choose the sleeve since it's less invasive. I'm not on a crusade to bash the ban, I just can't have it due to health issues..my decision will be to have or not to have wls, period. That's why I was asking for advice. Thank you for your input though. Thank you, mrstlovely, a support group is a very good idea. This forum has been acting as support for me and I'm sure the sleeve forum will also be helpful. Meeting people in person will probably help me make a decision though..seeing people face to face after having the surgery and the results they have gotten will be motivating too.
11. Very nicely written post. I can relate to so much of what you said. My husband was banded two years ago, he too chose it as self-pay rather then do the bypass our insurance would cover. I was terrified. I worried about him surviving the operation. I worried about him not losing weight and getting very depressed because he saw this as his last chance. I worried that he would lose weight and find someone prettier. Did I mention that I worried?! Well, he survived. He's healthier now then he's been in years. He's lost about 90 pounds, he's kind of taking his time with it. He looks good. I started to wonder if maybe there was something to this banding. So, I did more research. Ran some numbers, since I'm self-pay also. Made an appointment with his surgeon and said "OK, now I really have some questions". Got it all set up, got my date. Was told to lose 10-15 pounds and promptly gained 7! So now, I'm kind of in limbo. I had to wait until the end of August because of work deadlines. Giving me lots of time to think about how much this is going to cost, how much more in debt we will be. About how it will feel to have a device in me that has a say in what and how much I eat. How I'll feel if I can't, for whatever reason I think there might be, lose weight with this. I have a tendency to think things to death and over-analyze. To question my decisions. But I do feel this is a good choice for me. I've struggled with my weight since high school. I'll lose some, then slip up and gain it all back. I'm quite frankly tired of it. Of working so hard with nothing to show. I do realize that there is work ahead of me, but I feel like I'll have my little buddy to help. Hum, I think I need to come up with a name for my band... I agree, this is a journey and will be interesting. I have my op-day outfit picked out (A muu-muu from a recent trip to Hawaii), my shopping list written and my time of from work all figured out. Yay for us!
12. I had my revision surgery January 2nd ,my surgery was 3 hours , I has bad scar tissue and the band was growing into my stomach , that being said I felt great after surgery a little sore and tired first couple days but that's it not a lot of gas no nausea , I felt much better after this surgery .The Lapband recovery was harder for me . Oh my goodness Nat78 sounds like your body went through alot. So I am understanding you right you did get to have both the lapband removed and the sleeve done in one operation?
13. Have you noticed that each type of weight loss surgery, according to the fans of that surgery, seems to be the *only* possible choice anyone could make? It's kind of amusing. 1. Here at the VSG forums, everyone is all about VSG, and talks about all the problems with the band or with bypass surgeries. VSG is the *only* way to go. 2. Last evening I stepped into the Lap Band Chat Room just to check it out. Everyone there was nice, but went on and on about all the problems of VSG or RNY. They raved about how the band was the *only* surgery anyone should have. 3. A month or so ago I attended a live support group for RNY bypass folks. Everyone there was great to talk to, but every single one of them also had nothing positive to say about the other choices. Everybody said the RNY was the *only* surgery to have. I'm sure each surgery has its place for all the right reasons, but the devout loyalty of each group is pretty amusing. :laugh0: Dave
14. I was sleeved on 11/9 after nearly 3 years of being banded (my band came out in August). I woke up from surgery and have been starving since. I know it's not head hunger - after nearly 3 years with the band, I know what head hunger is, and I know what it's like to not be hungry. It's not acid. It's not thirst - I'm drinking 100 ounces of Water daily. I'm on mushies/purees and it's still not helping. Today, I had my follow-up with my surgeon. He is not overly shocked I am hungry, but he was a bit surprised. He sent me for a upper GI to check my esophagus. He suspects dilation due to the damage from the band. If it is, it should just take a few more weeks to go back to normal. He said he can't promise, but he's 99.9% sure that within the next three weeks, I will feel satiation as my body adjusts to the band being gone, my hernia being fixed, and the rest of the scar tissue from the band finally removed. The doc that did the test, though, said there was no dilation, however, they also said my band wasn't slipped when it was, so they are not bariatric specialists (I'm not complaining or upset, just stating.) He did say my surgery was picture perfect (sans scar tissue and hernia), that I had a normal size stomach, that he went a bit tighter than normal, and he sees no reason it won't work long term. I also talked to a friend of mine who is a revision, and she said she literally cried the first three weeks she had her sleeve because she was so hungry. Then it got better, and now she loves it! She had it about 6 months ago, so I am hopeful I will be the same. Oh, and he cleared me to eat turkey tomorrow! He also suggested I drink some warm tea after I have a few bites of Protein to help add volume to my food to give me that sensation of fullness. So, I am not 100% convinced, but I feel 90% better about this whole thing. My other non-medical theory is my poor bowels are empty, as I still have diarrhea, and how could I feel full when they are empty?! LOL, I know it's a stupid theory, but I am adding it to my pile. And if I start losing weight again, I'd be even happier! Again, he reassured me this is normal, and according to his scale, I'm down an even 30 lbs. So, after all that, anyone hungry at first? Or still? Has it gone away? Gotten better? Thanks!

To band or not to band?

Thanks so much for your input. I don't like the fact that with the Bypass your stomach gets cut either! I also don't mind a slower weight loss. You've helped me a lot with your input. Thanks again!

Sleeve Plication ?

Apparently this is the method that Dr. Oritz prefers for sleeve revision to tighten a loose sleeve. Yes I'm having a hard time finding much on it though I do know that the original plications (non sleevers) showed very little success long term.

New to lap band surgery

Everyone is different. For me, i took pain meds for 3 days, and it was over the counter, cause i am allergic to everything else the recovery was much better than i thought it would be, better than when i had my gallbladder removed which only had 3 incisions. Just watch what you eat, be very diligent in foods you choose as you don't want to PB or vomit, it is not pleasant at all! i just had my first vomiting episode this weekend in public at a restaraunt and very embarressing. LOL! just chew, chew, chew you foods. stay away from white breads and follow your doctors advice and orders. You will have to adjust your eating habits, but i didin't find this all that hard as i didn't want to do this for nothing. Seen friends who abused their band or gastic bypass and they gained it all back! I for one, will not abuse my band. It is my Tool, not a quick fix. It helps me get to where i need to be. It is one leg of a 3 legged stool, diet and exercise are the other two. It will not work if you don't do the other two. You will be fine!

Lapband slipped? Eroded?? Help needed!

Finally yesterday i found a band doctor.. Who examined me.. He took out the liquid only 2 cc of omnipaque in the band.. My symptoms were muxh better but he suspected aesophegus dilitation and now i realize my food a d water was getting stuck in my aesophagus and not band.. It is still getting stuck but a lot lot better then before.. I had a barrium swallo test for an hour today... And now i will get a endoscopy done tommorow.. Nervous of whats going on.. He suggested me to take out the band and go for gastric bypass or mini bypass even though i am below my target weight .... Confused and scaredif my esphagus is perm damaged or worst i have barrets? Or some thing sinister? Also cost for revision is very expensive for me right now and no insurance.

Lapband slipped? Eroded?? Help needed!

Barrium swallow shows slight esophagus dilitation except for that no band erosion or any band slippage..no liquid now.. Syspotoms have improved .. Gained a kilo or 2 because of water and food entering the body normally.. I dont know if i should get sleeve or bypass after this and get band removed.
20. I'm choosing the sleeve because it's less evasive, with no re-routing of the intestines. Also with the sleeve you can eventually eat anything, whereas the bypass limits you and there is possible "dumping".

That final push

So since I started this thread, I was diagnosed with a slip, had revision surgery, was unfilled for several months, an bounced back to 200 lbs. Right now I'm at 182 lbs, so time to restart the clock. I'm not sure I even can get to my original goal weight due to the muscle weight, but we will see. All I really know is that I have a pool party with my fellow gym rats on August 16 -- Time to PUSH 17

Caution about alcohol

Yes, thank you for the wonderful post. It's absolutely true and the epidemic of bypass patients becoming alcoholics - to the point where I've read that it doubles your chance of alcoholism - is not something to tiptoe around or assume you'll avoid. Any addictive behavior can transfer and you'll read about hundreds of crossover addictions if you look and do your research. A few rare people make those addictions fitness but you'll see many more instances of other, less beneficial ones. I definitely tended to lean on food in times of stress and I find that now, especially a few years out from surgery, that I'm more likely to lean on alcohol these days. Things that I never once would have abused or considered prior to surgery are things I have to be careful about - I had an issue with sleeping pills to help me sleep last year. Why on earth would I feel the desire to take them once the need was past? But it can happen - with anything - if you have unresolved addiction issues. It's enough of a worry for me that I refused pain meds after the birth of my daughter. The nurses and doctors are drug pushers and must have asked me a dozen times if I wanted them in the hospital as well as a bottle to take home. No, I don't take chances and I didn't need them. I have to go the safe route these days. ~Cheri
23.
My sister in law and I both had WLS two months apart. She had the bypass first and I had the band. So far she has lost about 50lbs in 16-17 weeks however, I have lost 35 lbs in 7 weeks. So far so good I think. I am really glad I chose the band because I can still have a piece of cake if I want it as long as it is a small piece, unfortunately my SIL cannot or else she dumps. I have had only one fill so far but I don't feel deprived at all! I can basically eat anything I want but only in smaller quantities, which is really a blessing. I regretted having surgery in the beginning but from what I hear that is normal, two weeks after surgery I felt great and have been feeling even better ever since. It was the BEST decision I could have made and believe me I had the option of bypass if I wanted because my insurance was willing to pay for either completely.
Forgot to mention I haven't started exercising yet so once I start I know it will come off even quicker!
24. Well said Faith. I know several people that have had Gastric Bypass and they have gained all their weight back. I know one lady that had the bypass and never got to goal and gained back 30 pounds. She says she wished she would have had the lap band because it can be adjusted for up to 5 years(I think that is correct info). I have seen some of the gastric bypass patients at support meetings and they look like death warmed over. They have deep dark circles under their eyes and just look like skin stretched over a skeleton. There is also one lady in our church who had it - she does look good - but she developed an Iron defiency and now has to go for iron transfusions once a week or maybe once a month. When I was researching WLS I said to myself that if the lapband didn't work for me then I would later have the gastric but now I know it will work for me, its up to me to make it work and now I know that I will never have the gastric bypass. The lapband is a tool and if you follow all the bandster rules you will reach your goal! I think the gastric IS the easy way out - but to me it is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy tooooo scary-------------- Good luck to you and hope you will make the right decision for yourself. shelli:)
25. Hi Everyone, I’m rather new to the board, and I’ve been posting on the ‘Newbie’ Forum, to get a feel for what others are thinking in the planning of WLS. I see that we pretty much all share the same concerns for the most part. I wanted to get myself on the General Forum now, as I’ve got questions for the ‘Lap Band Veterans’ to answer for me – as only you can! **I have to say that I just went to the Before/After pictures Forum, and have tears streaming down my face with happiness for all of you. I can only aspire to have my pics posted some day soon! You’re all heros to me, and I hold each of you in such high regard – as I’m learning that this whole journey takes Nerve, Perserverance, GUTS, Stamina (shall I go on!) As I’ve said, please forgive me in advance if I post any questions that may seem ‘stupid’…but if I knew the answers, I wouldn’t ask. I’m using the search tool on this site; it’s fantastic. A bit about me: I’m 36, overweight, one co-morbidity – High Blood Pressure. I just had my first live forum with the doctor that I’m considering here in NJ; Dr. Abkin from Morristown. I went to the hotel for the forum that focused a bit more on Bypass than Lap Band. I had dozens of questions, but couldn’t get them all answered in two hours! I am scheduled tomorrow for a meeting with my General Doctor, who will then refer me onto a Nutrionist and Pscyh Doctor. Right now I have Aenta who requires 6 months before surgery. Next month my employer has Insurance enrollment, and I’ll be changing to Blue Cross or United; as per the “Insurance Pros” at my Surgeons office – since they approve nearly automatically. (WOW, I’m long winded – sorry!) I will have all my ‘pre’ stuff done before 1/1/07 – then I can work on scheduling my consult with the doctors; and onto Band Day! I know it seems rather premature for me to be doing all of this; but I think doing this slowly can help me prepare better mentally. The one question that I have for you Veterans is this: Other than complications, what can I expect after surgery, that I probably haven’t read about yet? I think now I put so much emphasis on ‘getting together for dinner’; I fear that I will cry at some point when I realize that I can’t just go out and do that with my boyfriend, mom, etc. Sorry for being long winded…but I am so excited to have this forum to help me!!! :faint:
