Aubrie - I had the same problem when I attended my first support group meeting, everyone had Gastric Bypass. Well, I just started my own support group in Tulsa, we just had our 2nd meeting last night. It went good and I know as time grows, I will get more members to attend. I just posted it on yahoo groups under Oklahomabandsters@yahoo.com. I bet yahoo has a group in your state - you could maybe find some people and start your own. I have mine the first Monday of every month and I have it at the Barnes & Noble coffee shop (its free). It is working out pretty good, I've had two meetings so far and they are so much more personable than the one my dr. has.

They do the endoscopy to make sure you don't have a hernia that can cause problems, My endoscopy is tomorrow..I already know I do have a hiatal hernia, so now after the surgeon looks at it he can decide if it needs to be repaired, he can do this on surgery day. The lap band is much safer than gastric bypass though the results take longer with the band. Good luck!!

Right after surgery, your body is in a major heal mode for a couple weeks and it is difficult for some patients to meet their daily Fluid and Protein requirements. But keep trying each day and you should be able to get there. The three most important elements after gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily protein, fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. Weight loss is achieved after RNY gastric bypass surgery through meal volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as Protein shakes.

I really need support for what's ahead...Revision of my sleeve to bypass.
James Marusek replied to justhere4theshow's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Good luck on your surgery. Intractable bile reflux sounds a little like GERD. I am 3 years post-op RNY gastric bypass. One of the reasons why I had RNY was because I had severe acid reflux (GERD). Sleeve will only make this condition worse. I have not been bothered with GERD since my operation. This article explains my experience with RNY. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery.pdf -
New - sleeve with autoimmune disorders
Marge1927 replied to new.life.2014's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Everyone! I have been diagnosed with MS for 4 yrs. now. My surgeon recommended GS over banding and bypass surgery due to the MS. I had to skip the last two surgery dates due to a bad relapse in July as I had terrible vertigo and went numb on my entire left side. After two rounds of high dose steroids was able to come down from the vertigo. It was terrible with throwing up for 36 hours straight and not able to walk. Thank God after six months I am back to base line and walking, have short term memory loss but just meet with surgeon on Monday and said he will proceed with my WLS, he has it scheduled for Feb.3rd and I am very anxious but nervous at the same time, just want to recover with no complications or another relapse. Keep me in your prayers as I will you all as well, and glad everyone is doing well. Did anyone have any issues after the surgery that I should be aware of? Looking forward to a new year and a new me with more energy. I take Avonex once a week, but my bloodwork shows no antibody build up to the medicine so its the MS. God Bless and hope to hear back! -
So probably loosing 100 lbs during the first six months isn't probably realistic. I have lost 54 lbs since my surgery date in November and 64 lbs all together.

Cutwater posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Heading in this morning for my bypass. The time has flown by since I started this process back in February. Good luck to all of my fellow Aug 10th surgery peeps and thanks to all on this site who have been so helpful and encouraging. -
My RNY was on the 19th of September and the Doctor has me crushing all pills until the 19th of October. I can hardly wait to bypass the foul tasting ground up meds. I've been mixing with unsweetened Applesauce or Oikos Triple Zero Yogurt

Hi all, I had my sleeve revised to bypass on Monday, 8/31. I am 4 days in and weigh more than I did on surgery day. Is this still surgical fluids? I’m following my Stage 1 plan to the letter and frustrated.

I'm glad you two are having good results with him. My dear friend Sally and her friend both got banded by Dr. Hamn in 2005 and they said it was done wrong and both had major issues and had to get the bypass. Maybe he's gotten more experience over the last few years, so it's good to hear you both had good experiences.

Topical pain relievers......and ongoing relief from arthritis down the road ?
Djmohr replied to Dub's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
The only thing that gives me some relief topically is BioFreeze roll on. I have severe arthritis in my spine. In fact I just had a 3 level cervical fusion 8 weeks ago. I take Tylenol and following bypass surgery, it actually helps. Unfortunately my weight loss has actually caused my back to be more painful. My doctors tell me this is pretty common post weight loss because all the fat was actually providing support. Also you carry yourself different and your more active. On a good note, ankles and knees are much better. Good luck! -
Help! I think I'm dying
mr1121 replied to ginaandy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My husband had gastric bypass couldn't hold anything down. Of course a stubborn man so wouldn't make a drs appt. finally I won the battle to go to doc and found out he had already formed a large amount of scar tissue, surgery and then 2. Months later back in surgery again. That was a year ago. He is doing better now, thank goodness. Here's the real bad part. He was at work with his office door closed, he explained to me it felt like it did before the other 2 surgeries to fix his issue. He passed out in his office. We have no idea how long he was unconscious but I'll cut it short. Extremely dehydrated and had zero potassium in his body. They said that if he didn't come in when he did to the ER he could have passed away. It took him being admitted and 4 days of IV to get his potassium back up to normal levels... it won't hurt to get checked out... go now Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
What I wish i knew before I had surgery
gabbykittyvsg replied to Shineaiggy29's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a sleeve 7 years ago and wish I would have known about the high prevalence of damage due to acid reflux after the sleeve. I now need to revise to bypass to stop the damage from getting worse. If you have any history at all of reflux, I'd be talking to your doctor about doing a bypass instead Sent from my Z6201V using BariatricPal mobile app -

Flab-U-Less Forever replied to Shineaiggy29's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm sorry you've had such bad GERD. I suffer from it too now which is why I told my surgeon that I wanted the bypass instead of the sleeve. This forum is where I found out about the prevalence of GERD worsening after sleeve. Good luck with your revision! -
http://www.doctoroz.com/videos/underperformed-surgery-you-should-be-getting-pt-1 I'm sorry it wasn't YouTube, but right on the Dr. Oz site. It has 5 "parts" to it. It is on bypass specifically, but that's okay. We all know sleeve is even better!

SCARED OF BEING DENIED??? i have a secret! PLZ READ
jasleeve posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
im terrified of not getting approved & i was talking to a friend who has had the sleeve done & she gave me a tip! it turns out that LAP-BAND & GASTRIC BYPASS patients are NOT allowed to take asprin! if you can have your regular doctor prescribe you asprin for some type of pain related to weight (back, knees, hips, ankles) & have it on record, it will be hard for them NOT to cover vsg. you wont qualify for BYPASS OR LAP-BAND!! you may get denied the 1st time but be patient and appeal OVER & OVER! you just may get your way. i hope this works. im calling my doctor tomorrow & im going to tell him the truth & i know he will hook me up. IF YOU HAVE ANY OTHER TRICKS OR TIPS, PLEASE POST!!!! -
SCARED OF BEING DENIED??? i have a secret! PLZ READ
Anakin Jay replied to jasleeve's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My surgeon said asprin is bad during the healing process for VSG... but after you're healed it's fine. Gastric Bypass on the other hand, you can never have asprin again for the rest of your life. -
Hi, you asked some good questions and your concerns are all things we all think about and need to be addressed. You are right to consider all these things. I have only been banded since October 26,2007 and am not really all the way to total restriction so I am not an expert. But I will tell you that the 'food yearning' issues I was so concerned about have not been nearly as bad as I feared. I can eat pretty much everything - including bread. You do have to eat slowly, take small bites and chew stuff until it is mushy, but really that is how we all should be eating anyway. Watch a skinny person sometime and I guarantee you they will be eating more that way than a fat person! Another thing I want to point out to you is that there seem to be a lot of people on this sight who I think (this is just my opinion) are too tight and too restricted and overfilled. The purpose of the band is to lose approximately 5-10 pounds per month. You can easily do that by keeping your caloric intake around 1000 calories. I see people on this sight all the time who are eating 500 or 600 calories. There is a thread on here for posting your daily food journal and if you read some of them they look like a food journal for a hamster. In my pre-op education I was told that I should be able to eat approximately 1/2 of what I used to eat. That really isn't that little. That is what most of my skinny friends eat when we go out. The reason I decided to have LB instead of GB surgery was because I do love food so much. With the lap band you can enjoy food still. Please don't let that be the reason you decide not to have the surgery. As you read posts on this board, remember that there are a lot of different people on here and we are all different and go to different doctors. I plan on only getting as much restriction as I absolutely need to continue to lose a safe amount of weight and still enjoy food. I agree with you that food is one of life's great joys and it is not wrong to enjoy it. If I wanted to lose 20 pounds a month I would have had gastric bypass. The other real factor that led me to the surgery was thinking about life AFTER I reach my goal (and now I really believe for the first time I will reach it!!!) The band will allow me to stay at my goal weight and not be constantly worrying about regaining all my weight. The band will always be there and will always be my special tool to help me stay on track. How loose or tight it stays will be up to me and me alone!

Clothing while you're losing weight
Recidivist replied to xMissyChrissy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I actually have clothes from four different sizes of me as a result of previous diets that worked temporarily, before I gained all the weight back. So, I have wardrobe options on the way down. (My bypass is in February 2019.) I've decided that I will go out and treat myself to a new wardrobe once I'm at or near my goal weight. -
Time To Goal and Amount of Loss?
penman53 replied to Scout1234's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I started out at 387 and at the time of surgery I was at 341. Seven months later I weigh 330. So I have lost 111 pounds and I am 5 pounds away from my goal. My surgeon is very impressed and has told me that the amount of weight I have lost compares more to a gastric bypass patient. They are going to feature me on their weight loss web site. Wow too bad I'm not good looking lol. -

kimmy*custis replied to MrsAdams84's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
And yes, weight loss is quicker with the sleeve over the band. When I went in my doc says I am losing like a bypass patient, guess they lose a bit quicker than sleeves she says. Woo hoo! -
Hi - My doc said I could take my naproxin (anti-inflamatory) right after surgery..... he said the issue with it is really one of people who have gastric bypass and not the band due to the way the stomach processes it and that a portion of the stomach and intestine are removed for bypass patients with regard to erosion or something. I take 500mg 2x/day for a while because of tendonitis, arthritis and back issues I have already so I would think the doc wouldn't have an issue with you taking it for a few days. That's my 2cents Faith

Self Image Issues After Surgery
CurvyCat replied to unaguy05's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Self-image is such a strange thing. I get more self-conscious as I lose weight, and it's always been the case for me, every time I have lost it. My husband doesn't get why I deflect any commentary on my weight loss, why I don't revel in the positive feedback. I don't know exactly, but I am definitely more critical of my appearance the smaller I get. The tummy bulges bother me more now because I can *almost* hide them, whereas before I just took them in stride because there was no disguising them. I've gained and lost so many times, and it's always like this. The last time I did a little better, and hopefully this time I can get comfortable with myself in a smaller body for the long haul. I've known a lot of women who've had bypass surgery and this outlook is less common than others, but definitely is not rare or unusual. We've just got to work on getting comfortable in our new bodies, for the long haul. -
Hi, I just want to share that my 2 year anniversary is coming up in November. I have lost 50 pounds, but I think I may have finally gotten to my sweet spot last week!! It took forever to get there, so be patient!!! I have a 10cc band now filled with 8.1cc.
