Sleevers feedback wanted! Will I lose my hair after the Sleeve?
Anababy replied to Gr8fulMiniMe's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was sleeved on 2/28 and as of Today, 5/30, I haven't experienced any hair loss. I do take the following vitamins daily: OPTISOURCE citrus chewable multi vitamin 4x a day, Nature Made VitaMelts contains 2500mcg of Biotin and 60mg of vitamin C, and a sublingual liquid B complex with B12. I eat lots of chicken breast and start my day with an Atkins shake that has 15g of protein. I feel confident that as long as I take my vitamins and stick to a high protein diet, I won't experience hair loss. -
Looking Forward To A Smaller Grocery Bill!
emily_0192010 replied to Kiki Von Moonshine's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Not to burst your bubble too much... because your grocery bill definitely goes down... but don't forget that protein shakes and stuff can be expensive... I thought that too and ended up shooting myself in the foot a bit when budgeting lol. -

No hair loss here but I'm only a little over a month out. I have been and continue to take Biotin. Not sure if it helps but trying it. Also making sure I get in my protein. : ) -

My plan would be: commit to weighing myself every day get or re-establish a Myfitnesspal.com account and log everything I eat, every day weigh or measure everything I eat, but don't focus right now on limiting amounts. Just to be aware of exactly how much I am taking in. No guess work! limit my food choices to high protein/high restriction -- basically meat, fish, and eggs -- and green vegetables. Eat that way for a week to see how I do. Good luck!

Yesterday was a rough day for me
HappygoSusan replied to HappygoSusan's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
Thanks for the encouragement. Today was better. Got in my 10K steps and a few extra. I also met my protein goals and while doing that made much better food choices. It is great to get input from folks that completely understand! Susan -
I am 4 months post op and I do get hungry especially if I end up eating more carbs than I should. If i stick to a high Protein meal with good carbs (veggies), it keeps me fuller longer. If I do get hungry in-between meals I will actually drink a cup of fat free milk which fills me up until the next mean plus it gives me good protein. By the way, my hunger kicked in right after I started working out more vigorously. Also it takes very little to make that feeling go away.

Thanks for the advice! I've stuck to liquids all day today and I guess we'll see how that goes. I'm feeling quite weak and tired so I'm trying to choke down a protein shake as I type this. I've developed a huge aversion to protein shakes. I recently heard of a brand that's basically like the Crystal Lite of protein shakes. I think I'll be able to tolerate that better so I ordered some samples. I'm hoping I can start back on food in the next few days but I guess for now it's liquids. Ugh!

Just make sure your iPad is new enough. I have a 1st generation iPad and an iPhone 4 and neither will sync my flex. There are lists of supported devices on the fitbit page. I think it needs the iPad 3rd generation at least and iPhone 4S or newer. There are many android options.

Can someone please help me...
Jennifer Rogers replied to Jennifer Rogers's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm past the point of not being able to "gulp". I can drink normally, and when I say enough liquid to "shoot" I mean its maybe one ounce. I have shopped around and tried many many many different protein sources. I simply can't tolerate any of them. My source of protein isn't in question at this point, my concern was mainly for how long I should be waiting between consumption of it. If I could take it all at once, that'd work so much better for me. -

BLERDgirl replied to Jennifer Rogers's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Gulping down anything is not a good idea. You need to sip slowly or you may end up vomiting everything back up. If you don't like the Protein you are taking why not switch up? There are zillions of them out there. You may get bored only drinking but keep searching until you find one that is at least tolerable. As for "time" I'm assuming the means each meal. Since we are aiming for 60gms a day that means at least 20gm each meal. ETA: Are there any support groups offered by your doctor in your area? It might be helpful to drop in to some of them. ETA 2: How are you doing with your Vitamins & supplements? -

I thought you were referring to vitamins & supplements. I'm okay with my proteins, but thanks for the info. -
I am not required to do a pre-op diet except the day before surgery. HOWEVER, I have been doing 2 Protein shakes and 1 small meal to help prepare for the after math of surgery. Store bough broth's are really not all that great to me. So I have made turkey and chicken broth myself and I have the ability to feel like the flavor is satisfying. On Monday, I will cut out the small meal and just do the liquid part. So far, after doing this for 4 days, I am already down 5 pounds. I helps me keep motivation when I check the scale . Best of luck to you whatever road you choose to take.

Please Tell Me What You Think Of These Shake Nutritional Values
Carrie's Journey replied to Robyn Owens-Miille's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Have you heard of Health Wise drinks? They have yummy hot chocolates that have 15 g protein. I would have one every morning (maybe with a little instant coffee), but they're a little pricey. I also like their protein drinks...they taste like crystal lite way more than a protein shake. But the soups were gross. -
each ins company is different... Kaiser ins gave me the option to take the sleep study home or do it there. I did it in the hospital because the appt. Was a month sooner if I did it in the hospital. I had my surgery date one month after seeing the surgeon. Best Wishes to you!

Special K20 Protein Water
PATCHELTON replied to Kage's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I haven't tried the K20, but if you are looking for a real bang for your protein buck, Worldwide Protein Shakes are great. They have 35g of protein, 1g sugar, 3g carbs, 1g fat (0.5g sat/fat)and 160 to 170 calories. It comes in Chocolate Cream, Vanilla Cream, Strawberry Cream, Banana Cream, and Cookies 'n Cream (tastes like Oreos). They are sold in Vitamin Shoppe for $2.75 individually and $27.99 for a 12 pack which is about $2.33 each. Worldwide calls it a protein supplement, and says not for use in weight reduction, but I have been drinking them for over a year (I saw a link here once to Brigham Womens Hospital Bariatric Program, and these shakes were on their list of protein drinks for patients). They also come in 29g drinks but I have only seen them at Trader Joe in Vanilla and Chocolate. They were $1.69, and the Vanilla and Chocolate 35's were $2.29. GNC has the 35s in Vanilla and Chocolate but they are $2.99 a can. Vitamin Shoppe (and GNC) also sell them online and sometimes you can get a free shipping deal depending on how much you buy. I really like them. -
Hey Guys, I went to Wal-Mart a few days ago and found Kellogg's Special K Protein Water mix. It was in the Cereal isle and it's awesome! A packet mixes with a 16.9oz water! It has zero fat, 6 grams of carbs and 5 grams of protein. I thought I'd mention it. It's a great way to sneak in a little bit more protein and it tastes great! (I can only vouch for the pink lemonade though...) I'll be getting more of these for sure!

I also think they are not complex carbs, but the kind that are digested quickly, like sugar. I wonder if they would cause a rebound hunger an hour later. I'm going to try to stay away from white carbs, which is something I've had to do all my life. If I look at bread, I gain a pound! Same with corn, peas, etc. When I crave carbs, I go for beans, which are acomplex carb and high in protein.

I am trying to get myself prepared for the 7 day post-op clear liquids. Does anyone know if the protein shots 2.9 oz fruit flavored drinks ok on the clear lliquid diet for Dr. Aceves? Any additional information would also be helpful.

I have been taking Bariatric Advantage Protein bars and shakes for my pre-op diet and because of all the stomach issues I have been having my NUT recommended a dairy-free version. Does anyone have a soy protein they can recommend??? Thank you!

I have seen several recipes both on-line and in cookbooks, but need some advice! My program recommends servings per meals versus calories/carb/fat/protein limits etc. I am not sure how to determine if a recipe meets all the requirements of if I need to add additional food items to meet my exchange requirements. For example dinner i am allowed 3 protein, 2 carb, 1 vegetable, and 1 fat exchange. Any suggestions to help fit these recipes into my life. Getting so tired of boring chicken and turkey, rice or potatoes, and a vegetable every night. I loved to cook pre-op and like variety. Thanks,

Here's what my Kaiser handbook says you should be in terms of calories, protein & water intake!

Needing encouragement... band to by-pass and no loss in a month
Blenda Gail posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Had conversion from band to bypass on 12/9, had to go back in for lower intestinal constriction surgery on 12/14 and spent 3 more nights in the hospital. When I got out of the hospital, I weighed 180 (25 pounds lost on milk diet and during hospitalization of a total f 7 nights). One month later I weigh about 179. I do get about 80-90 grams of Protein, drink plenty Water, exercise, light weigh-lifting at gym,and I am eating regular food now, which I carefully measure. Calorie intake of 800-900 per day. Tracking everything. So...never get sick, never feel nauseous, never feel like I have hit capacity, even with just plain 2-3 oz. chicken or tuna. I read somewhere that my pouch will be bigger than normal because it is a conversion. I hold myself to about a 1/2 cup + a very small amount of soft vegetables per meal. I typically am not hungry, but I have no problem eating and am diligent about getting protein in. Also, all Vitamins. BUT I feel like the surgery didn't work because I am not having a "full" feeling, not feeling nauseous like others report, and can consume at least a 1/2 cup or better with no problems. I know others may think I am crazy to complain about no symptoms, but it makes me worried that I will not lose weight, even though I feel like I am doing everything right, and it has been about a month now with no loss. Has anyone out there gone through the same level of "stall"? Any similar experiences where loss does finally come? -
I am about 10 months out, I am very close to my goal weight, and I am so happy with the way that I look, but my health is diminishing, and I'm only 20 years old. I am to blame, I never really took Protein shakes or Vitamins, I couldn't stomach them at all. About 2 months ago, I started feeling very dizzy and it elevated to fainting, a lot, and everywhere, I ignored it at first, then i got a stomach bug, and I was away from my country for a month, and no doctor could help me, so I was very dehydrated, which increased my fainting spells. Came back home, kept fainting, hair started falling, started getting chest pains and insane palpitations, eventually I went to the doctor, turns out I am hypoglycaemic and anaemic, and low potassium, low Vitamin D, it doesn't sound that bad, but I have no energy at all, I can never get myself to work out because of how low my energy is and I feel so angry because I can't do anything about it, doctors told me to eat more potassium rich foods and get some sugar intake, but I CAN'T! I cannot stomach any sweets. I also feel like I can't eat as much as most people can at 10 months out, I really don't know if I'm eating too little or too much, but compared to people 10 months out, i can't eat much at all some days pass by and i completely forget to eat, and I've had to stop in the middle of the road several times because I felt like I was about to pass out behind the wheel. I started taking Iron supplements, multi-vitamins, vitamins for hair, and I'm trying to hard to get some sugar in my system and remember to eat, but I'm scared of adding Vitamin D supplements, scared it'll be too many vitamins, and scared of adding Protein Shakes, because i'm scared the taste would make me throw up, or cause serious constipation, more than I already am, which i hate so much. So please help and give me tips or share your experience with me.

New ...question at the end of my book intro...
Brandy~ replied to acopas's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Your post isn't quite a book since it still left me with questions  I am not a doctor but I personally think the lapband works better for those that are Volume eaters. Since this causes restriction (after fills) Then you will have to learn how to curb the previous behavior or addiction. I myself was a volume eater so maybe that is why I assume it works. Alot assume this could be the easy way out.. It is not. Having any WLS is a roller coaster of emotions... You will have to concentrate more on the liquids you take in, eliminating beverages with calories, eating Proteins first, eating much smaller amounts, eating very slowly and taking small bites. There's still exercise involved. I think all of this outweighs the health risks involved with obesity. I had my surger at 32... if I could of done it at 25 or would of thought to have done it at 25 I would of. I don't regret a single second of it.
