I just experienced my first adverse reaction to food that felt like could be dumping. Im a week and a half out from bypass and on puréed food. I had the tummy issues and nauseous and dizziness and anxiety reaction. But it only lasted maybe 15 minutes. It was a milk based protein snack with only 4g added sugar (8g total sugar) and 2 g fat so I’m not sure how that would be dumping. I’ve had some issues with lactose since surgery but not to this extent. Does this sound like dumping?

How to handle vacation?
SpartanMaker replied to qtdoll's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just got back from a 5 day "mini-vacation" and the one thing I can say is that I way, way over prepared. I was so worried about having food I could eat that I put together multiple bento boxes (one per day), that I never touched. I also had protein bars, protein drinks, protein snacks, etc. I hardly touched any of that either. Mostly I just ate what everyone else was eating, just a lot less. I think in the end it was good for me to learn to eat "in the real world". The one thing I did struggle with was getting my liquids in. We were pretty active most of the time and I kept falling behind on my fluid intake. In retrospect, I think I actually should have focused a lot more on how to get my fluids in, and a lot less on the food part. -
November 2022 surgery support!
designated-knitter replied to feisty one's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello all, had Gastric Bypass on 11/14 and so far it has been way easier and less painful than expected. The only thing is I put on 10 pounds over night from when I was weighed before surgery and when I got home the next day. I’m SLOWLY losing that water weight… but still 4 pounds higher than when I went in. but I’m walking, drinking well, getting tired of protein shakes… would kill for some grilled salmon or even cottage cheese! fortunately, my appetite is under control so when my son eats his meals, I’m not (too) jealous! -
Hello All, Looking forward to joining this very supportive group! I appreciate how everyone is so supportive and I hope to return the favor! I'm 2.5 weeks post op and feel very weak. It's not as bad when I'm sitting down but standing makes me feel dizzy at times and today felt like I was going to faint in the shower. Had to jump out and grab a towel to sit down. I'm hitting my water and protein (barely), and taking my supplements. Is this just my body adjusting? My surgeon said that last apporintment but I don't see a lot of improvement. I guess I'm just wondering what others encountered around this time. My main incision where they pulled my gallbladder is still pretty painful but I'm told that will get better too. Thanks for any advice you might have! Laura

Have you been on vacation since surgery? How did you do? I'll be visiting family at a beautiful beach town soon! & I've been over-planning to not mess up my progress or hurt my stomach. I have so many restaurant options already picked out, microwavable meals I can have, protein snacks, & I'm packing a Bento box just in case I need to take extra protein out w me. It's gonna be a challenge but I think I'm well prepared! Any tips?

Howdy! I've heard of Marine collagen and it is supposed to be very good as well. The product I get is from New Zealand and they might be able to ship directly. Here is a link to their blog - https://antlerfarms.com/blogs/articles/antler-farms-new-zealand-collagen The Dr. Berg vitamin C is a chewable tablet so works looks just fine. The other supplements are standard-sized capsules. You could break them open and mix them into a pudding. I did that before I was able to swallow them again. Some companies are coming out with sugar-free gummies, which is great, but it has not caught on for quite a few manufacturers. So until then, I want to stay with the sugarless options. I hope this helps you

Good luck on your surgery. I have a week and day to go!d I have been on nothing but liquids for a week and have another week to go on the protein shakes, broth, water, jello and sugar free popsicles. I would love some scrambled eggs LOL! I had one day when i was starving but after that I have been feeling really full on the liquids. I drink a lot of water anyway so i glad i got into that habit a couple years ago. You are going to do fantastic, keep us posted please -
I have not seen any family other than my mom, dad & brother since my surgery. Luckily my neighbors are absolute angels & said such nice things to me But I am TERRIFIED of seeing the rest of my family. They are kind but are very blunt. I told my parents to not tell them about my surgery & I worry they'll slip up bc my family is the type to want to know all most intrusive things. But even without them knowing about the surgery I know they'll want every detail. "high protein calorie deficit" is all I'll say, since that is in fact also true!

I wasn’t much of an eater to begin with, but not being able to eat anything and watching other people eat is a little hard. But mostly I keep going back and fourth if the sleeve was a right option or should I have tried harder. I knew a couple people that also had the sleeve and they told me too that in the beginning you regret it but as soon as you see results and start getting used to eating normally, a lot of them wished they had done it sooner. I think its just the beginning, I am positive it will get better! -
My surgery is the same day. I started the liquid diet on 11-14. It hasn't been too bad except for day 3. On day 3 i was so hungry for some reason but I made it past and it has gotten better. I was told to drink 4 protein shakes a day and that has been difficult for me, i so full after 3 shakes i struggle to get the 4th one down but i am doing it. We have come this far almost on the downside so hang in there, we can both do this and the 28th will be here before we know it! Wishing you the very best, it will be so worth it!!

I haven't tried gum but I have used straws a few times with no issues. The cravings are something I understand though and I'm sad to have them. I was looking forward to not being hungry and being happy on my protein diet, but it hasn't been as easy as I hoped. If its just a rare event then it shouldn't hurt anything at all as far as weight loss. The hard part is the mental one after a treat day. You realize you can eat those bad for you foods and then you want them more and more often. If you can handle the mental part and go back to the prescribed diet and stay on it then I think a treat day every once in a while can be fine. I plan on thanksgiving being my treat day and I'll eat the carbs and dessert and just relax for one day. This diet is like a full time job sometimes. -
I am midway though week 3 post op on purée and going onto soft food that can be cut with a fork next week. The past week I have been having yoghurt, puréed fruits, soft cheeses, super mashed tuna and avocado, and other dips, scrambled egg. I have been away with friends down south for last 3 days though and I have had the odd bite of mushroom, slow cooked lamb rib meat, waygu steak, some soft fish and squid, and a bite of chicken but I chewed every piece until it was almost a paste before I swallowed and I feel worried too.. You’re not alone. I can’t get in more than about 4 teaspoons worth of food in at any given time. Still having optifast/protein shakes, soups, high protein up n’ go’s and water as well as puréed as it’s sometimes easier. I feel ok as I’m not eating past that full feeling but now we are home again I’m sticking with 100% purée until I can start on soft foods next week. I think it’s probably normal to make these little mistakes here and there but I think if you’ve been conscious around how much you’ve chewed these types of things before you swallow it, you should be ok. Just reset and try to always tell yourself to stop when you get the feeling you have had enough.

Food Before and After Photos
Tomo replied to GreenTealael's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Oppo squash soup with green papaya, onions, tomatoes, ginger, garlic and more. (95 cal). I make different versions every week. Different veggies every week. I eat this throughout the day to get my veggies in and stay hydrated. The protein I had was an air fried small tilapia which I ate first. I ate half of it (112 cal). My cat ate the rest. -
Waiting
summerseeker replied to Prioritizing Myself's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my surgery in the pandemic. It should have been a 4 month wait but ended up being 8. It broke me at times but the information I gained while waiting and reading back pages of this forum really set me up for success. I knew exactly what to expect. In the New year the time will fly for you. You will be so busy getting your house ready [ nesting] and then doing your pre-op diet. I made broths for the freezer and bought a mixture of foods for the early days like instant porridge and a variety of protein yogurts etc. Being older and disabled at the time I didnt have much energy while recovering so was really glad of this prep work. -
macros during post op diet
qtdoll replied to KimA-GA's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I did not fully track my macros till I hit my soft foods stage. Before that I just made sure my protein was 60-70g like you mentioned, didn't worry much about everything else. Now that I'm in the 'early transition to solids' stage, I track them all completely as I can now include veggies & a few fruits. This is what my macros usually look like now (ignore the 'goal' percentage those are the default numbers the app placed) -
October 2022 surgery support
katvondemon replied to KimA-GA's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Had my surgery on 10/24. The first week and a half I was steady losing a pound or two a day. For the last 10 days however my weight has gone up and down by the same 1-2 pounds so I guess I’ve hit the dreaded stall that people experience around the 2-3 week mark. I’m down 13 pounds since my surgery date and 24 pounds since starting the pre op diet. I have noticed my pants have gotten baggier and my face is thinner. I started at 215 pounds with a BMI of 34 so I expected my results to be slower since I was on the “lower” size for this surgery. It’s crazy how everyone’s diets are different with each doctor. As of this week I’m allowed most foods with the exception of beef, pork, rice, Pasta, bread, raw vegetables and nuts. I am mostly eating small amounts of chicken, tuna, eggs, refried Beans, cottage cheese and some fruits. My doctor has told me to prioritize Protein and aim for 60 grams a day. I have to drink 1-2 Protein Shakes to accomplish this as my portions are not big enough to get that from food yet. I was also told no straws which is also seems to vary by doctor. I feel like I’m doing ok mostly. I have been struggling mostly with just getting my fluids in. I am supposed to drink 64 ounces a day of which 20 is plain Water. Because I can only take sips and not drink 30 minutes before or after I eat it can be challenging. It takes me a couple hours usually to drink one cup of water. So that’s my biggest hurdle right now. I’m trying to be better with it and track. Any tips? Otherwise I’m looking forward to breaking through this plateau and seeing more progress. Hopefully in the coming weeks the scale will move again. I’m trying not to obsess over it but 20+ years of yo-yo dieting has given a lot of power to that damn thing 😡 -
macros during post op diet
Arabesque replied to KimA-GA's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It’s another one of those things where different surgeons & dieticians have different plans & requirements. I wasn’t given macros either apart from protein. Just portion advice (1/4 - 1/3 of a cup), a list of approved foods & advised to keep my fats, sugar & carbs low. I wasn’t even advised to track my food. I randomly did that for my own interest. There’s nothing wrong with asking for more guidance like wanting macro goals if you’ll feel more confident & comfortable with having them. You have to do what you need to have the greatest success. -
macros during post op diet
Jeanniebug replied to KimA-GA's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I only care about my protein and the amount of water that I'm getting, right now. I've started eating more now - I'm up to 1/2 a cup and I'm really only drinking 1 protein shake per day. But, I am tracking, just to make sure that I get enough protein every day. I'm hitting the goal, no problem. I'm thinking I might do the Portion Fix program, once I'm on solid food and can eat more. I did it before surgery and I really thought it was a great program. It was very clean eating and felt healthy. I couldn't stick with it because I was STARVING all the time - but that was just my hormonal imbalance. Now that I don't have to worry about that anymore, I think it will be a good plan. -
I dropped 50+ lbs pre-surgery by cutting out all foods containing sugar, flour, white potatoes, rice, and processed foods. These are my trigger foods. I consider myself to be a sugar/food addict. I can never go back to eating these things with abandon. I started using the Baritastic app. I occasionally used liquid protein shakes during that period. My calorie count dropped to around 1000 per day. I attended water exercise classes three days a week, including swimming 1/4 mile each time. I also increased my mileage on my walking tricycle to at least a mile a day. I've lost another 50+ lbs since my RNY>RNY revision surgery. I still strive to avoid my trigger foods. It's harder to resist now and weight loss is slow going, but I'm still dropping a few pounds a month with lengthy stalls.

Able to drink and eat normal 2 weeks Post Op
Amie S. replied to victoria0322's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am absolutely the same. I was too scared to even try anything during the liquid phase but when I got to pureed phase I tried chicken noodle soup at an outing with no way to puree. I was able to keep it down. I have had no trouble with eating anything. I am only 5 weeks out and still not eating anything too heavy, too hard, or sugary at all but I was absolutely convinced the doc forgot to actually remove the stomach. Had it not been for the decrease in appetite and the filling full quickly I would have argued him on it, lol. I am able to drink water like normal. If I drink protein shakes too quickly, like I often do when at work, I find I get just slightly nauseous, but it passes in like 15 minutes. I have hit a MAJOR weight loss stall though. I fear this may be part of the reason, I have done too much too fast. That being said, all the research I have done says you cannot stretch your stomach this soon after surgery and a weight loss stall early on is not uncommon. For now, I plan to keep doing what feels right and see how it goes! Thank you for your honest post, I was scared to admit I was moving faster along than prescribed!! -
macros during post op diet
Tomo replied to KimA-GA's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ooh yeah lol, as far as macros, the only macro I pay attention to unless I need to analyze my diet is my protein. So although I track everything (it is fun for me). The basic goals I was given, and I find it works wonderful for me long-term is the following: Stay hydrated, protein 55g and above, 7 to 13 fruit and veggies servings a day to decrease inflammation & let leptin do it's magic, eat good fat, and good complex carbohydrates (oatmeal, healthy breads especially sourdough, beans... Etc). -
I had surgery on 10/17 (Saturday) and went back to work 10/24 (Monday). I had no pain or issues working but keeping up with water and protein intake has been as struggle. I also struggle with remembering to get up from my desk and take a walk. However, I am now almost five weeks out and am still having the same issues. I think, with a desk job, going back in one week or a month is not much different. No matter when you go back the fluid intake and movement are going to be an issue. I have yet to figure out a real solution. I have become much better about the protein and doing okay with water. The process of getting the steps/movement in is so HARD! Even with walking 30 min on lunch and 30 min after work I am nowhere near my desired step count. If anyone has a long-term solution to the "desk job" problem PLEASE SHARE!

Taste change after surgery
STLoser replied to KimA-GA's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I have always been a saltaholic, but after surgery most things tasted too salty to me. I also couldn't stand the taste of any of the protein shakes because they were all too sweet. I'm over 2 years out now and all of that is better, but I have noticed that I really don't care that much for cheese now, which I have always LOVED. I still like it on or in things, but just to snack on by itself I just don't care for it anymore. It's weird. Sent from my Pixel 5a using BariatricPal mobile app -
macros during post op diet
Sleeve_Me_Alone replied to KimA-GA's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I track, but I only track to ensure I hit my protein. I had surgery to break the cycle of dieting, and counting calories and carbs and all that just perpetuates the cycle. I would suggest before you start, have a conversation with your team. Its very likely that they didn't give you macros because they don't want you tracking and obsession over them. Protein is really your only hard and fast "goal" and the rest is far less important, especially this early out.
