the protein shake is something you will be sipping on all day long basically. I started eating solids about a week out without any problems at all. I mostly eat chicken for my protein but I also have these protein shots that I drink if I notice i'm not at my protein intake for the day, they have 40 grams of protein and are cheap! I also buy nuts now and eat those for snacks, Bolthouse Farms protein shakes are good too if you want something different. My nutritionist recommended those to us. I also like string cheese for a snack too, it's high in protein and it fills me up.

I've been thinking of the same thing. Just trying to get prepared. To add onto your list: 1. blender or food processor 2. broth for sure! I recommend a broth that you can find from Walmart. It has an increased amount of protein. It is also organic and gluten free. I've attached pics. They have chicken, vegan, and beef. Warning: the vegan has a lot more calories

Biotene swabs for dry mouth - after surgery you feel like you will never get your mouth hydrated. Heating pad instead of hot water bottle. A thermal cup because stuff gets warm/cold because it takes awhile to get stuff down after surgery. After the first week, I could barely tolerate sweet protein drinks, I had ready-made Isopure punch or blue raspberry and mixed it half n half with premixed crystal light, Isopure is tart, 4ogr protein for 20oz and clear. Also tea because warm liquid relaxes the muscles in your esophagus and stomach. I agree on the Sam's Choice Bone Broth at Walmart, I added garlic and simmered vegetables in mine for extra flavor then strained it. Audible books for while you are walking. Take naps when you need them, sometimes you don't realize you are tired and BAM! You hit a wall of exhaustion five minutes later. Good luck.

How do you know this is right for you?
Jachut replied to magquilter's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
You have to allow yourself time to work those doubts out. It took me MONTHS, almost a year of toing and froing. Coming on here was good and bad in terms of making progress there. When I read the type of diets people were eating, I decided it wasnt for me. I know people will take this in the manner its meant but I totally and utterly do not believe the Protein first/lowish carb approach is the healthiest one, probably simply because that type of diet has never taken off in Australia the way it has there and I'm simply not conditioned to view it as "normal". The thought of eating that way long term put me off majorly. Also in America, it tends to be so rules focussed, you will eat this, you will eat that many calories, you will drink Protein shakes, you will only get a fill when you fill x, y and z criteria, you will do liquids after a fill, etc etc etc. It sounded like a prison sentence, not a lifestyle to me (and it still does). It was only when I sought out Australian info, talked to other Australian bandsters that I realised different approaches were possible and equally as effective. The idea of what the band does appealed to me enormously, the typical lifestyle afterwards did not. People report on it in such a black and white manner, my surgeon says this therefore it is right kind of thing. Once I realised that many people do their own thing, work it their own way, eat what I consider a "normal" diet and lose weight, I felt confident to go ahead. This board is a very valuable and supportive resource but it can definitely function as a very negative and scary picture of a lapband lifestyle as well. -

Having Trouble Eating

Hi Lisa! First, Congrats on the sleeve!!! Second,, and I do not mean this rude at all, just being honest... I think it takes more time for our heads to catch up to our sleeve... You do need to eat, but.... you are eating.. your just not "over" eating! Hope that makes sense... I was like you, concerned about eating, getting my protien,,, (i could not do eggs..yuck).. I was forcing myself to eat ,, such an idiot. I wish I could go back to day 1 of surgery and I would so that all over.. I took everything so litterally, eating every 3 hours, making myself eat, it would take 45 minutes to get something down and I would start planning what I would eat next. I was actually making myself sick and had a few bouts of being on the bathroom floor in serious pain being sick from forcing the food. I went for my 1 month check up and told the doctor about this and he was NOT happy with me! He told me eating 6 small meals is a guideline, protien levels are guidlines, but in the first 6 weeks we are in healing mode, and its o/k. to not hit the protein mark, or not eat 6 times a day... He looked at me and said "please stop forcing food!". He told me for the next two weeks to only eat when I am hungry, and to calm down on the protien levels.... It really, really helped.. like I said, I later felt like an idiot because I had the sleeve for weight loss and there I was trying to shove down food in me every 2-3 hours! UGH.. big mistake, lesson learned and I have been fine ever since. Point of all this, is I truly think it takes time for hour heads to realize we do not need the food like we did prior to surgery. It sounds simple, but it isnt.. those first few weeks after surgery are hard, you 2nd guess everything...or at least I did... Good luck to you... make good choices and happy losing!!! -
Day 4 Post Op Need Your Advice on the Nitty Gritty Please?
Lakelandgirl replied to Christina44's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I use 1/2 scoop Premier Protein Vanilla Milkshake flavored powder that has stevia as the sweeter along with 3/4 scoop of Unjury unflavored protein in fresh squeezed orange juice and ice cubes blended in the blender. Tastes like an Orange Julius. -
Day 4 Post Op Need Your Advice on the Nitty Gritty Please?
Cupcake replied to Christina44's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi you might want to check with your doctor about the gritty thing after your Protein shake, are you mixing the protein with enough Water or milk? I heard the bulliet blender is excellent, myself I but the premix Protein shakes, at sams club, i drink premiere protein shakes because when I bought the mix no matter what I did it was gritty. In regards to the tongue why dont you purchase biotein spray or their toothpaste this should help you. Congrats on your choice to being healthy and welcome to the losers bench. -
My take is that you have a lot of carbs and a lot of "filler" with little nutritional value. Lettuce is a waste when it comes to nutrients and you are eating it twice in a day. You might try substituting raw spinach or shredded zucchini for more nutrients. I think Dorrie is right about the bagel half, too--not too many nutrients and a lot of carbs. Maybe oatmeal, for soluble fiber and whole grain? I don't know what a kid's Z bar is, but kid food usually has a lot of sugar to make it taste good. Have you tried Nature Valley Protein Chewy Bars? 10 gms of protein, 190 calories, and they taste good and fill you up. Have you thought of beef jerky as a snack? a hard-boiled egg or 8-10 almonds? You are barely making your protein requirement in this example and I think you should try for more. I know I would be starving if I depended on two salads a day to fill me up. I see that you have a ways to go and there is nothing wrong with the occasional salad to mix things up but think "Protein first."

Having Trouble Eating
lsereno replied to lkcraig316's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Lisa, I'm on my first week of soft foods and I don't want to eat most of the time either. I just set my timer and slog through it. I really want to get away from the Protein drinks so I've been eating 3 oz of protein per meal. I just can't face anything to solid first thing in the morning so I have 1/2 cup of greek yogurt (10 grams protein) for breakfast. I also have a couple of slices of peach, which I enjoy. Then I have a low-cal string cheese (8 grams of protein) mid-morning, 3 oz of turkey, chicken, ham, fish, or shrimp for lunch and dinner, and a Protein shake before bed. I've been making these with 4-5 strawberries, 4 oz of ice, 1/4 cup unsweetened soy milk, 1/4 cup Water, and a couple of spoons of splenda. I am eating only my favorite foods, but it is still hard to eat. I'm mot worried though because I've read of lots of people have problems early out and they resolve with time. I feel like my stomach is still healing, so I'm not surprised it's a little cranky when food gets shoved down there. Lynda -
So, I was sleeved on august 13th 2012... I lost 20 lbs pre op, and 14lbs the first week post op. I have stuck to this new way of eating. I've completely changed my eating habits. I have yet to get in my full amount of water, or protein, but I think if I focused more on that, I may be able to.. It doesn't really cross my mind much that I am thirsty, or need to drink, drink, drink lol. I still get that hungry feeling, but there are times when it takes me hours to feel it. There are other times where I feel hungry an hour or two after eating. I am on soft/regular foods, and have been eating things like chicken, cottage cheese, scrambled egg substitute, lowfat string cheese, Greek yogurt, etc. after my first week, I hit a stall.. which I've read is normal bc you're body is adjusting. This lasted 2-3 weeks, until the other day when I noticed I was down another 2-3 lbs, and then another .5-1lb. I can take more than a "SIP" of water, I have had a popsicle with sugar, (I use sugar substitute now) nothing I've ate has made me sick, or throw up. I have not had ANY problems... is this normal? I know everyone's experience is different, and although I was a little worried if I was actually sleeved... I know I have to be bc I eat much less, I have lost weight (first week) I'm just wondering if im doing something wrong? has anyone else had an experience like this? any tips? :/

protein drinks, broth, sugar-free ice pops, i do believe ever bandster should invest in a juicer. (you can get them cheap, and not as messy as people make them seem) you get your fruits veggies and add powdered protein (vanilla is great and some health food stores sell plant protein)

Surgery Tomorrow! Yikes!!"
sassyfrass replied to sassyfrass's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Corianna, thank you. When ya'll drink your protein shakes do you have the whole shake at a time? My doc / nutrition orders says only have 2 oz. liquid meals 6 times a day. And in between to sip on water, crystal light, etc... I am finding it hard to be sure I get at least 50 g of protein. It has helped to use the protein shots ( from walmart) that have 26 g, however.... to try to stick with my orders...it takes me a few meals to get it in. Oh boy, wont it be easier when mushies can be added. -
Tuba or salmon patties. I buy them Pre made in a pouch like regular tuna. High protein and low cal. That plus some salad or veggies keeps mr full about 5 hrs. And I have gone back to homemade protein smoothies in the morning. Fresh fruit. Ice. Greek yogurt. Lots of person and my fiber too since I add benefiber powder. I I get hungry and need a snack a handful of almonds or a 90cal fiber one bar tides me over.

From my experience, the medical loan companies have very high interest rates. They kept telling me that because of my excellent credit, they were finding me great rates. I had to laugh, my credit card had a lower rate. We ended up taking out a HELOC Loan instead at 3%. The best rate I got from medical financing was 8% + fees. You may also want to try a personal loan from your bank. Like I said, it was just my experience, but I thought the medical financing companies were much higher than my other options.

So, what happens if...
Kami replied to Marleykay87's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just ordered a sample pack of hot chocolate Proteins at mybariatricpantry.com Haven't gotten them yet so I can't say how they are, but if you have trouble with cold drinks, that's an option. There's also Unjury's chicken Soup Protein. Greek yogurt has a ton of protein, so you could try adding that in as a supplement. good luck to you! -

I am sorry you are having these issues, but you might be getting more protein than you think. Have you tried measuring out your portions and counting the protein? Also, have you thought about cottage cheese and maybe tuna salad? -
I am totally addicted to Premium Protein drinks from Costco and Sam's club! I have been drinking it for over 9 months and still love it.

Once you have clearance for raw veggies you can eat anything. With my doctor that's 6 weeks. i have some leftover protein bars from my pre-op diet and will supplement with those as snacks when I get to 6 weeks. The KetogenX bars are pretty good and Ideal Protein has a few that are pretty amazing too.

Bad occupation for a sleeve?
bearman99 replied to Tracic's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Bacon gets a bad wrap. 43 calories, .2g carb, 3g Protein, 3g fat. Not bad really. Ham is low fat. You could be a ham pusher. I am a ham.....but that is a different story. Sausages - no hiding from that. Not so good all around. Know that sugars and refined carbs are (I believe) the cause of most obesity. Never malign bacon. The taste per calorie is better than most foods. -
To all the stallers....
Roseib replied to SFOTraveler's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Since month 3 I've lost 10-12 lbs quickly then stalled for 2-3 weeks and then started the cycle over. It's frustrating but the loss does begin again. Don't panic, Kaehl. Try shaking things up as others have said. I broke my first stall by adding a protein snack and upping my calories. I just broke my most recent stall by upping water beyond the required 64 oz. -
Not hungry on post op liquids, afraid to move to mushies!
coloradobanding replied to WorkingMom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am SO jealous! I wonder why every doctor is different, interesting. In any event, I am following my Dr's diet to the T. For weeks 1-2 liquid-soft pureed foods only. Weeks 2-4 soft foods/mushies, 5 weeks regular food. Problem is, I am HUNGRY! I've had a yogurt couple bites of popsicles, and a few bites of mashed potatoes, but am still hungry. I've been drinking my protein shakes almost constantly to get my 60grams of protein. I will look forward to the day when I can eat a piece of turkey and put away the shakes! -
Help me understand??
danielle b replied to gracierose's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Idk...whether it is proven or not....I increased my calories to about 8-900 in the past 2 days instead of 5-600/day. And I got onto scale today and I have gained 3#. I should have just stayed at the 5-600/day and been at a plateau instead of a gain. But this is what I am not understanding about the band!! I am not hungry in between meals, I eat my protein first and then my fruit/vegs, I do not snack in between meals, I try to walk about 20-30 minutes everyday....why am I not losing weight?? My first fill was 4.5cc.....do you think I need another fill?? But if I get another fill will I be in starvation mode if I am still eating 600 calories a day?? Confusing for me!!! It is no wonder I hated dieting..... -
Hello and congratulations on joining the band! I only have one thing to say - CALM DOWN! :tongue2: You're going to worry yourself to death, which, by the way, is absolutely normal. You've made a drastic change for your life. The surgery was just the beginning. But remember it didn't change your mindset, it only changed your body internally. The external changes - actions, lost weight - will come as time goes by. I think you might be stuck in the same mentality that many of us are - the DIET MENTALITY. This is not a "diet" but a new way of thinking about eating, food, and self-image. It will take time, Fellow Bandster. I'm about eight weeks out & I'm still fighting to stay off the scale everyday. Instead, I'm making sure I get all my Protein & fluids in. Working on being more active. The rest will happen. So I end with the word of advice I began with - CALM DOWN - you're doing fine. Don't think about what you ate, but WHY you ate. Dealing with those issues are far more demanding than keeping some Pasta out of your mouth. :cursing: Best to You
