Hey!! I am happy to see a message from you!!! Woo HOO!! I hope your call comes soon!! . Today eating in moderation seemed so much raiser than in the past!!! I met the surgeon and I DO NOT have to loose the 15-20 like I was told!! But I am staying on track and loosing!! . I will have a three week pre op diet that is three small meals and two small snack and does not include Protein shakes!! I was given a list of the food I can have during this time. Luckily I love all of it and it allowing for variety. I should be set for surgery in November!! When do you think you'll be sleeved? How's everything else going for you? Smoking cessation? When you talk to the surgeon, spend some time with him discussing how and what you eat. If you were to journal your food intake for a period of time before your appointment (fitday.com is a good site, but there are many), it will help him get a really good idea of what "kind" of eater you are. BMI isn't the only criterion that should be used to decide what surgery to have. The long-range results for both gastric banding and gastric bypass are about the same. (Yes, you lose more rapidly with bypass---but overall, the outcomes are similar.) It is more important to identify which surgery with which your eating style is best aligned. My doctor paid a lot of attention to my eating history. I did have food journals for him to look over---and in the end, he told me he thought I was a much better candidate for banding. Your doctor may reach a different conclusion---but you can help him reach the right conclusion with you if you give him as much information as possible.

I would get an second opinion. The doctor who will do my surgery mentioned no limit for BMIs. The only thing he told me was that a BMI of 50 and over will have to be done at the hospital and not the surgical center. If I remember what I had read about the sleeve, is that for people who have very high BMIs, the sleeve is a two step process. So sleeve first to loose weight and then do the bypass surgery. So I think your NUT is really a NUT. Keep trying. Don't give up. By the way, she should be there to help you, not tear you down. Take care.

She was pleased. I went with Dekalb medical because several people that I knew who had even sleeve or full bypass a gone with Dekalb were extremely happy. Also my youngest daughter is a surgical tech and she had assisted my surgeon on several procedures both general and bariatric and she said he was absolutely phenomenal.

Has anyone with bypass had to take prednisone orally?

Dumping happens when you have had gastric bypass and you eat too much sugar or fat. Your body cannot process those items. I have also had mild cases when I eat too fast. You get the sweats, your heart starts racing, stomach cramps, you can either vomit or get the diarrhea or sometimes when it is really bad, you get them both. I have only ever had mild versions but it can be very uncomfortable and depending how severe can ruin your day. What happened? What did you eat and what were your symptoms?

My story from lap band to gastric bypass
thisisthenewme replied to ShrinkingMeme's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi ShrinkingMeme! Wow your story sounds very similar. I got my band aug 2011. Did very well for the first year. The company I went through, private pay, went bankrupt. Was still doing well the next year. Went from 282 to 210. Meet my husband and put on a couple pounds, lol! Then a year later we we married and then pregnant right away! While pregnant I started to get very bad issues with food being stuck. Just dealt with it for 18 months eating ice cream and whatever I could get done. Back up to 290, my highest weight! Sept last year I had enough and talked to family doctor. He referred me to Ontario bariatric network to have reversion to bypass covered by OHIP. They were able to unfill my band, which can I never had done...no where to go. So finally able to eat again! My surgery is Oct 4 and totally nervous they will only take the band out and then I'll have to wait for bypass. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Getting Banded Set. 7th....yeeeaaahhhh
Jammin & Losin replied to BIGMAN's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Is your band date November 7th??? Good luck and congratulations!!!! -
Are you sleeve or bypass? I may be wrong here- but shouldn't we be keeping to 1/2 cup of food per meal? I'm bypass, maybe that is why? I'm 6 weeks out as well and can't eat more than that physically. I'm so scared of stretching that little pouch! Lol I think it depends. I read by 3 months the RNY pouch usually expands to closer to a cup in size, and I bet that varies. Also I find the liquid foods may pass faster onto my duodenum, but besides shakes, I never measure the volume of my meals. Semi solid things like yogurt or puréed refried Beans are never an issue. I once heard you can't physically stretch the bypass pouch although it gets bigger with time, but I don't know what the truth it. Usually they say it is the stoma that widens to much, allowing food to pass faster, but that isn't from overeating. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Do you wish you would've had Gastric Bypass instead?
Nanook replied to amberakamom's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I had type 2 diabetes when I was banded and I don't know if that was a factor in my failure or not but it may have been. After banding I found that my eating went from "normal" food choices to softer foods and I still really craved sweets, be it yogurt with fruit which I could eat endless amounts of or ice cream which I could eat endless amounts of or even Cereal. Mainly I chose the softer foods because I could eat them without throwing up and could eat any amount I wanted. So after losing weight preop I gained it all back afterward and then some. Plus my diabetes worsened and I also had high blood pressure and high cholesteral. I can still eat some sweets now that I've had my bypass over a year but only certains ones. Everyone is different and I have dumping syndrome still which for me makes ice cream intollerable, I get nauseous, which I see as a good thing as it was my main weakness prior. It can be very difficult to see these issues prior to surgery, at least for me it was as I wasn't even aware that I could eat large amounts of certain slider foods after being banded. People are more aware of the pitfalls now so that's a plus. I made the lapband choice first but had to revise eventually to RNY in order to lose, it wasn't easy and I can't take back what I orignially did but was a bit too scared to have RNY in the first place but I feel pretty normal and take my supplements and have bloodwork done and have survived. I also have a daughter who had RNY and two nieces and so far we've all done fairly well. So I'm just giving you some insight into a different point of view but it's your decision in the end and I just hope you pick the right one the first time, good luck to you, Nancy. -
Do you wish you would've had Gastric Bypass instead?
elcee replied to amberakamom's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
What are his motives for preferring bypass? Is it because he genuinely feels that it is better for you or because he makes more money? That is something you need to find out. I'm really happy with my band. I have lost all my excess weight plus more and am living a normal life eating a well balanced, healthy (most of the time) diet. -
Hello All, I was banded on November 30, 2011 and my first fill is scheduled for January 26, 2012. If I had any restriction, and I don't know what was actual restriction and what was in my head, I haven't felt it for about 3 weeks and can probably eat as much now as I could before surgery (I try not to! ). If I don't chew well or get distracted, food will get stuck. So my question is this:- If food (bread mainly) gets stuck, does that mean there is "restriction"? Or, is food getting stuck and "restriction" two separate things? Thanks everyone for your anticipated responses. Colin

Is the sleeve right for me?
CowgirlJane replied to tohealth's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I don't think any WLS eliminates cravings or some of those other things. Even gastric bypass, not everyone "dumps " and I think some that do initially don't later. No matter which procedure. ...it isn't easy for most of us. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using the BariatricPal App -
Thank you all for the kind words and advice. I'm hanging in there. My surgeon feels the dry heaving is due to an ulcer they found post-op. I'm on Carafate now. He said it could take weeks to improve, so I'm just praying at this point. Still weak, but I think that's due to several factors - one, I have little interest in food and can't force myself to eat much other than Soup and fruit; two, I've lost 90 pounds in three months, which I suspect is too fast; and three, two surgeries in two months. So I just need to push through it. Ugh. I pray so hard for the day when I can say I don't regret this! I just want to feel better. That's why I made the choice to have bypass in the first place. Also, I wish my sense of smell hadn't suddenly changed! What the heck? Everything smells so nasty now. My doc keeps asking if I'm sure I'm not pregnant, and I'm all, you've tested me THREE TIMES in the past month. Yes, I'm sure. Ugh.

I hated the sleep study!!!! It has been a nightmare from the beginning. My doctor has three offices in three different cities, takes forever to schedule an appointment, has incompetent staff that lose paperwork. I'm just at a loss. I finished all my clearances, nutrition classes, blood work, psych approval blah blah blah in early November here it is January and I'm STILL waiting for an approval from him. I originally did the study at home then he claimed I needed to do the study in their overnight office. I barely slept either because hello... There is crap everywhere and I'm breathing through a machine that is hurting my lungs! So I push through the silly study and they tell me my number is 5. I can't remember the term off hand but I know it's the lowest number you can have for the mildest of mild sleep apnea. Mind you I have NO TROUBLE sleeping at all. So I had to get fitted for a machine, wait for it to be shipped, and now use it a full 30 days before my approval from his office. AND he said I probably don't need it. So with are you prescribing it? And then on top of that he says well I think it will be a good idea just in case you need during surgery... OK fine. I'm OK with that but if that's the ONLY REAL REASON you want me to have it then why do I need to use the dumb piece of crap for 30 days? Sigh. Can you tell I'm ranting. Just hijacking your post. Lol. My bad!!!! I seriously think its only for insurance and billing purposes. And extra doctor visits. Smh!!! Best of luck.

Slightly Discouraged
iagree2shine replied to danielleleigh90's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I actually had the same issue. I had a distal pancreatectomy. My cyst was on the body of my pancreas. It was found during routine scans. And you can live without a pancreas. I have the head but it doesn't work. So I am a diabetic now. But i'm grateful to be alive. I did as well lost my spleen due to the location. I'm post sleeve going to bypass. -
So I was on blood pressure meds for years prior to my bypass on 4/28, even took it day of surgery as per doc's instructions. I don't take it immediately after surgery and my blood pressure was running a little high at my first two post op visits. So I went back on the bp meds and have been on them since. And of course, my pressure is normal with them. I'm down 50#s now; so if you're taking bp meds, how would you ever know if your bp has normalized due to your weight loss?

Morning Thanks for your replies! I had 1 scrambled egg with 1 dessertspoon of tinned tomatoes and mushed it all up well. It was amazingly scrumdiddlyumptious lol. I had no pain or nausea from it. I did exactly what the nurse said, a mouthful was the size of a 20 pence piece, I chewed 20 times, swallowed, then waited 1 min until the next mouthful. So 1 egg took approx 30 mins to eat and was cold by the end, but my tastebuds were singing with joy haha I am trying potato now for lunch and eating it exactly the same way as the egg, tiny amount, 'chewed' (a bit hard as I blended it with chicken salt and water so is like baby food consistency) and then waiting 1 minute until the next 'mouthful'. Seeing as potato is so starchy it may well trigger a 'dumping', but I have been dreaming of potato with mince and gravy for a month lol So I have fingers, toes, eyes, legs and arms crossed it doesn't make me dump, (i wish we had another easy word for dumping syndrome). I am going to go and get some ricotta later so I can make that ricotta bake that looks delicious. Because I initially had a sleeve done they had told me no puree food for another 2 weeks yet, so when I had my Bari Nurse check-up last night she remembered that I could start puree foods now seeing as I ended up with an emergency bypass! So the things I had planned on buying to try pureed I don't have in yet, so good excuse to have a little walk to the shop and get a few bits

How can I stop weight loss?!
OutsideMatchInside replied to mmy's topic in Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Forum
I seriously doubt you can at 11 weeks. Your body is going to keep losing until it wants to stop. You can try increasing calories but with the amount of your intestine bypassed, you will likely keep losing for a whole longer. @@mmy What is your start, current and goal weight? -
How can I stop weight loss?!
James Marusek replied to mmy's topic in Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Forum
I transitioned from the weight loss phase into the maintenance phase quite naturally. The weight loss just tapered off at around 7 months. Your goal weight is just an artificial number. I think my surgeon and I agreed at a goal weight of 190 pounds. But in the end I dropped to near 140. So I wouldn't advise to try and stop it. Just let it run its course. This is the approach that I used in the Maintenance phase. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery2.pdf I am 3 years post-op RNY gastric bypass. Mini-gastric bypass is a different type of surgery. But there are similarities between the two. -
I'm 11 weeks post op and only 2 kgs away from my goal weight at which I will be at a healthy BMI. I currently have no problem with eating and drinking. I get enough Protein from meat everyday so no Protein shakes for me (nasty stuff plus caused me to be nauseous and with tachycardia) I average around 1200-900 calories per day yet my weight loss hasn't slowed down or stopped.. How can I stop it now?!
