I just saw someone on fb that takes cottage cheese and adds PB2 (powdered peanut butter you can buy at health food stores) and sf chocolate pudding mix. Not sure how that will taste, but it will have a lot of protein.

I like to go to places that have the kids meal options with fruit instead of frenchfries. Then I get the milk instead of the coke and put it in the fridge.

Ok DF/W banders, wanna be banders, and curious ... lets set up an evening, after work, where we can gather. Irving or Arlington might be good just because there are those of us from Rockwall and Benbrook, Allen and Alvarado .... Lets hear some suggestions. We are all at different stages so we can't all have the same things. My suggestion is Mexican food or maybe a steak house. Because Soup, refried Beans or baked potato, and Protein like steak and chicken. Say??? A Tuesday night? June 5th? Let me hear from you. You can email, text, message on here, or whatever. I incorporate cheese often, but in tiny amounts. Dabs of goat cheese in my salad, or melted grated cheese on refried beans. Just enough for the taste and a hit of calcium and protein. I never, however, just eat it on its own.

I too have lost and gained (like many of us - I'm sure). I also was afraid it wouldn't "work" for me! But I'm happy to report that it is working great! Don't be discourage if it takes a while to get started. I lost 17 lbs before surgery (11/09) and then managed to gain 7 of it back before my first fill (about 8 weeks after surgery). I've had 3 fills total and I'm around 7 cc of a 10 cc band and I'm now down 55 lbs. I also beleive I've hit that sweet spot that everyone talks about. I can pretty much eat whatever I want, just in very, very small amounts. I work very hard to get my daily Protein in first! My doctor told me from the very beginning that his goal was for me to be able to eat whatever I thought tasted good and lose weight and then eat whatever tasted good to maintain my weight. And so far it's working. So hang in there and get excited! It works!

Post-op diet ideas...
DaChanginQueen replied to DaChanginQueen's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanx for the ideas...I only have to be on clear liquids the first day and then full liquids for 2 wks. Seems every Dr is different..that's so weird. I know I will feel better in 2wks but I still wanna pick up as much as I can now..at least things that are not parishable. I've thought of beans and such that I can easily mush but I guess there's just not much to choose from in the early days...lol BTW Happy Anniversary! The day b4 5/5 is my B-day...I get to have a B-day protein shake...YIPPEE!! lol -
So since Thanksgiving I've been not making the best food choices. I've been slacking with my Protein and just overall slipping into bad habits. I am here today to start over. Today I was at the gym bright and early and have already had 30 grams of protein and 32 oz of Water. My goals for the week are to get 100oz of water and eat 3 meals a day. What a great opportunity Monday’s are! You get to fix what went wrong LAST week, you get to try the things that you were too afraid to do LAST week, you get to go after one of the infinite opportunites that are available to you that you put off LAST week…whoo hoo!! What will you do with your Fresh Start Monday??

Protein content in tofu: One half-cup serving of raw firm tofu contains 10.1 grams of protein. The recommended daily intake is 56 grams for most men and 46 for most women. A half-cup of tofu is approximately 4 oz by weight, or just under 1/3 of the average sized 14 oz package of tofu. By comparison, 1/2 cup dairy milk contains 5.1 grams of protein, one 3 oz egg contains 6 grams and 4 oz ground beef contains about 26 grams of protein. Tofu is an excellent source of vegetarian protein. Calories in tofu: One half-cup serving of raw firm tofu contains 94 calories. By comparison, 4 oz ground beef contains 331 calories, 1/2 cup of 2% milk has 60 calories and 4 oz of cheese packs 320 calories. http://vegetarian.about.com/od/healthnutrition/p/tofunutrition.htm Any recipe you have or find can be converted to using Tofu, it's a Great Protein alternative and if it calls for rice try Quinoa, it's healthier than rice. Problem is Society is all about eating meat When a plant based diet is much healthier in general.

Everyone is different. I was able to get to my goal weight eating rice. I ate it 3-4 times a week for dinner. I did not eat it alone, always as a side along with a protein (steak or chicken) and mushrooms, and peppers or veggies. It worked for me.

Days 1-7 of the pre-op diet: -2 protein shakes (each must have over 15gm of protein and under 200 calories) -1 meal that is under 300 cal, 15 carbs and over 15 gm of protein. They gave me a very short list of Lean Cuisines and Smart Ones meals that meet this profile. -At least 64 oz of water per day. -All of the sugar free jello, popsicles and broth that I want and Powerade Zero. Days 8-13 pre-op: -4 protein shakes (each must have over 15gm of protein and under 200 calories) -At least 64 oz of water per day. -All of the sugar free jello, popsicles and broth that I want and Powerade Zero. Day 14 (day before surgery) Clear liquids only, nothing after midnight.

Yes I found it difficult too. I even poked fun at the nurse - after my 3 month of pre-op diet per insurance with appetite suppressants they change me to this low cal pre op diet with no appetite suppressants was just cruel!! Knowing that this pre-op diet helped with a smoother surgery helped to keep me on track. Sometimes I would add extra Water (maybe 2oz) to my Protein shakes to help me feel fuller. I drank a TON of water too to try to feel full. Good luck!!

I am new to this, but I am doing the pre op diet right now. It seems everyone is different by what I read on here. My doctor has me doing the pre op diet 2 weeks prior to surgery. I have 2 protein shakes and one meal. My meal consists of 4 oz of lean meat and 1 cup of green vegie with nothing on it. It does wonders though as I lost 16 pounds in 7 days. I drink 64 oz of water a day and sometimes have a cup of tea in the evening to comfort my belly. I did great and now the 2nd week of it is starting and I have had a hard time the last 2 days. I have not cheated or anything, but I couldn't get crazy foods out of my head. I am pretty confindent it is only because of my insurance approval that is still pending. Anxiety seems to make me want a pizza lol. Anyway good luck to you and I hope that was of some help.

Congrats Peaches, I too am 5 sleeps from surgery - will be banded on the 23 of July, I hope I get along as well as you. Lisa in Toronto - get yourself some unflavored Protein powder with the highest protein content and mix that into your soup. I have all that ready - just have to have the surgery so I can get on with the program

I NEED Pre-Op Diet suggestions
Dysruption replied to rear624's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh this is pre-op! I should have read where the question was asked, my apologies! I was not the best on my pre-op diet to be honest. Trust me though, post-op is a whole different ball game. You will most likely not even feel hungry. There are times I have to tell myself it's time to eat because I have to get my protein in. Just hang in there until you have the surgery! Trust me, it's all worth it! When you're 4 weeks out and shedding pounds and clothes sizes, you'll look back on these days and laugh! -
Mikey & Janet! You know I have to agree with you guys! Dr. Sewell was very impressive. He did take us on a tour of the hospital. The psychologist was absolutely hilarious during the seminar. Since you guys were self-pay like me, how long did it take you from first appt to surgery date? Also, I've seen that whey Protein (big container) at WalMart. Do you mix it with fruit or anything? I'm really weird about that stuff....really dreading it. Tina

I eat Special K Protein Plus with Almond milk without any problems.

yeah the pain after the surgery was more than I expected as well, if i had known i would have been more prepared mentally for it.... The gas pains were really bad in my chest and left side, breathing deeply, walking when I could and doing little coughs has helped that, I think I got it all out now... I am having very little pain today just a little around the port area when i stand or sit, I am doing fine on the slim fasts (low carb diet ones) they keep me full and no other desire to eat or snack on anything, I weighed this morning and it was 230! I am just amazed this is the first time in years I have been below 245 lbs I think if you can get a few slim fasts in a day that is plenty of Protein, like 60g and with Vitamins and Calcium supplements we should all be great! Seems like we are missing something cause we dont eat as much as we used to lol I know, but I am really starting to love that I did this for myself...

Surgeons in Dallas Area
twobluecats replied to shylady318's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Hi! I'm looking at my paperwork from the nutritionist at Baylor Plano. They will give you a list of suggested protein drinks. I prefer the Premier Protein Drink from Costco (recommended by someone at the support group). It's not on the list but more than meets the requirements. It's 11 ounces and virtually no carbs. It packs 30 grams of protein. I also like the Amplify from GNC (20 grams of protein per scoop, mixed with only 4 ounces liquid) and Jay Robb. The Nectars are good to mix with water for fruitier drinks. The "requirements" noted on the paperwork indicate less than 5 grams of sugar per serving and at least 15 grams of protein. They also say to avoid protein bars. -
Had pre-surgery consult. Pre-op diet very different than expected
simpsongrad replied to simpsongrad's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So the picture didn't add both pages. One day is 800 and the next is 1200 calories per day. Hope it adds this time. Yes, I am a little concerned about getting all my Protein in after surgery. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Brian , My surgery was 11/5/08 and it was a breeze, i'll tell you why. My doctor and staff are second to none but since you aren't in New Orleans to see them ,i'll let you in on the secret's they gave me As soon as you get home start your pain med's and your gas-x strips . Continue taking them every 6 or 8 hours, whatever your bottle says, even if you don't feel any gas or pain. The objective is to have the med's in your system so that you don't have to feel the pain or the gas . You are beating it to the punch. If you wait for the symptom it is then to late and it will take forever for the med's to kick in. Also, walk as much as you can around the house, this will move the gas and also help in healing. Drink your liquids at least 2 ounces every 15 -30 min. I had no surgery pain or even gas pain but I did have slight soreness around the port sight. I used a heating pad on this area and it worked wonders. Also you may need to sleep on a few extra pillows at first. It was much more comfortable than lying down for me. Watching TV will become hard because every other commercial is about food. Get your spouse to go down to the local library. They loan out usually up to 6 DVD's at a time for free. You can keep them up to 2 weeks . Just relax and heal . Stay out of the kitchen because by next week if you see food you will want to devour it. Out of sight , out of mine. If you want to shove something in your mouth keep those Blue Bell sugar free pop-sickles in the freezer and just suck on that . Oh and I read about alot of people hating protein powder and I hate it mixed with water but I buy the EAS at Sam's and mix it with milk and it is great. I could't drink it if I had to do it just with water. I hope I was of some help.

Hm. Well I'm not here to defend my decision to you (unless you want to know because you care, not because you want to convince me I'm making a mistake and want to convert me), and more importantly, this topic is about the information you posted. So I'd rather focus on that, if you don't mind. What irked me about the post is that the whole tone is very misleading. If you are here to offer your experience and insight and possibly help others, then great. But you just posted a study summary that, after reading it, didn't pass my sniff test. I assume you downloaded (paid for) this entire study and didn't post just some vague conclusion about the lap band being inferior to the sleeve to explain why you made the choice to switch after a poor band experience. (which, by the way, is not everyone else's experience) I approach scientific data with healthy skepticism, and I'm happy to keep an open mind. So here are my questions on the abstract and results: What is gastrointestinal quality of life? What does it mean - how is it measured in this study? Are we talking good and bad bacteria, number of bowel movements, rate of intestinal distress? What is food tolerance? What does it mean - are we talking what variety of foods are able to be eaten? Quantity of food? This is most interesting to me because the band's primary purpose is to keep food tolerance low. I'm not sure why, otherwise, it would be part of a study. That's like measuring the light and heat from the sun and declaring that it's hotter and brighter than a lamp. lol. How significant is "significantly lower" did the AGB score? What do the numbers mean? Does it mean that because of these parameters, AGB patients had less long term weight loss? Lower quality of life? Less complications, less revision rates? Worse overall health? These things would get my attention, and cause me to look into my options again. Don't get me wrong, MsMaui, I wouldn't wish complications on anyone, I don't want the whole world to be banded. It's for specific people. And sometimes even good band candidates have a crappy surgical experience, like perhaps yourself. And maybe me, but I'm not convinced yet. As for me...My band has failed, yes, but for logical reasons. There is no reason to think it won't work again once replaced with a newer model and the port located to a less stressful place. Also, I am opposed to permanent surgical alteration, and will do everything in my power to avoid it. The band is still good in my eyes, especially seeing the results personally.
