Looking for suggestions - Need to decide to resleeve or bypass
Tufflaw replied to Tufflaw's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Thanks for all the comments. The endoscopy revealed that the sleeve was dilatated so I could either be resleeved or convert to bypass. After speaking with my doctor he recommended the bypass because of my GERD, and I took his advice. My surgery is scheduled for 11/17 and I'm excited to restart this journey! -
Cramping with almost every sip!
learn2cook replied to Fross's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had bypass with hiatal hernia repair. That same spot hurt for the longest time. The doc said that’s where they moved around so much to correct the hernia and muscle is cut there. I had terrible cramping too. It’s normal and will eventually go away. Like others said, keep up the water. I still like LF warm chicken bone broth for something soothing and liquid. -
Advice: Going through with the surgery
Namiland posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hi all. I'm new here (obviously lol). I met with my surgeon for the first time a couple days ago. It was INCREDIBLY discouraging. Honestly, I'm not even sure if he was trying to discourage me or if he was attempting to make me see just how much I'll need to do to take care of myself. He asked me what kind of surgery I wanted (btw, I'm with Kaiser Perm in NorCal, they only offer two types: Bypass or Sleeve). I told him that I'd read about both types but wasn't entirely sure which would be best for me. I'm a former smoker who quit 2 years ago. He replies with, "Honestly, I wouldn't recommend surgery at all for you." He went on for the next 45 minutes essentially telling me that my PCOS is all in my head (I was diagnosed with insulin resistant PCOS in 2009 NOT by Kaiser and they refuse to acknowledge it because they didn't diagnose it and refuse to test for it) and my continued weight yo-yoing over the years is simply a result of me being lazy about exercise (tell that to my wallet and the gyms I've joined in the past) and make poor food choices. In the end, it felt like he was attempting to talk me out of doing the surgery because my weight issues were all my own fault because I've "self-diagnosed" myself with PCOS to blame it on something other than myself. Yep, he told me I'm self-diagnosing. He also indicated that I've likely put on enough weight just to meet the requirements of the program. Now, I'm struggling to decide if I want to continue with surgery or if I should just crack down on myself and follow a strict diet/exercise plan for the rest of my life. But to be clear, this is 100% a surgery I want to help with my PCOS (as research shows it does). My previous doctor told me that due to the insulin resistance, my body is holding on to the weight because it thinks I'm starving myself. So it craves carbs like crazy and I have to exercise 3 times as hard as the average person to lose the same amount of weight. I'm feeling very discouraged and spiteful. I felt, after that conversation, that I want this surgery just because of how rude the surgeon was. Part of me doesn't want it because what if he's right? What if I AM just lazy and putting blame on something as a result.- 18 replies

Any October 2021 Surgeries?
Breanne (w 2 pups) replied to devotion's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hey all! I’m three weeks post op today from bypass. I’ve been very lucky with easily getting down the required liquids and my small blended meals. I’m suddenly struggling with food obsession again. I was okay the first while bc I knew I couldn’t, but now I’m trying actual food and really want the “bad” food. I want pizza and creamy pastas and the chocolate. I’ve held off so far, but have been creeping over the calories. It doesn’t help that I’m not losing much weight. “Only” 5 lbs in the last two weeks. I think the amount of free time isn’t helping. I’m still off work and most of my friends/family are busy this time of year. Any suggestions? -
Hi everyone. I had gastric bypass on September 28 and so far, things are great. I'm down 31 lbs., I feel fantastic and I've already been able to eliminate some medications. Here's my question... I was very constipated after surgery (which I know is to be expected) and had only gone 2 or 3 times in 3 weeks, even when using benefiber every morning and evening. After discussing with my doctor, I started fiber chews at twice the normal dose (2 chews twice a day) until things started moving normally, and two days ago knocked it back to 1 chew twice a day. Now, my poops are regular (usually once a day) but I'm concerned that they are very light colored and they float. I've done some research online and this can indicate several different things, including liver disease (I did have non-alcoholic fatty liver prior to surgery) or malabsorption (not getting enough nutrients). I'm just starting my soft foods phase, so I wasn't able to have much fiber until now but I'm curious if any others had experienced this particular issue, and if it turned out to me anything major. I feel better than I have in years and have so much energy, so I think if it were something serious I would know. I'd just like to see if anyone else had any insight. Thanks! Missy

Long term diet after DS?
NovaLuna replied to ClareLynn's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Most of the stuff not in stage 3 diet tend to be things they want you to not eat for the first 6-12 months. I was told no bread, pasta, or rice at all until 1 year post op. But then I learned I had a wheat allergy that developed after surgery (3% chance. they don't warn you about it because it's unlikely to happen, but my luck sucks). So when I eat bread or pasta it has to be gluten free (though I eat chickpea pasta noodles because of the protein. I only have gluten free pasta for any slow cooker pasta recipes because chickpea noodles are for quick dishes, not for dishes that have to simmer because they end up with an odd after taste). I also eat cauliflower rice instead of regular rice because it's low carb and I just prefer it. I actually have yet to try regular rice post op (I'm 21 months post op with the Loop Duodenal Switch/SADI-S/SIPS surgery). I'm technically not really in maintenance yet, but I'm borderline. I've only lost 1 pound this month, 1 last month, 1 the month before that etc. so I feel like I'm really close to maintenance, but still losing. Just super slooooow lol. But I'm eating more at what I consider a sustainable diet to just maintain my weight loss instead of actively trying to lose more. If I do lose more then great, if I don't then that's fine too because I've reached a weight that I'm happy at. I consume around 1300-1400 calories a day and have a minimum of 80g of protein (which my surgeon told me was my minimum daily protein intake). My daily diet is very different then yours will be I'd imagine, as I have food allergies (wheat allergy, high fructose corn syrup allergy, and I'm lactose intolerant. I had the other two issues before the surgery, but the wheat was a new one. I also developed an outright allergy to NSAIDS after surgery too, which sucks because I have arthritis). Really the diet for the DS and say... Gastric Bypass is pretty much the same long term except in protein requirements and the amount of vitamins that you'll need. If your dietician/nutritionist deals with gastric bypass patients and isn't positive about long term requirements I was told by my surgeon that it's pretty much the same just DS patients females need a minimum of 80-100g of protein a day and men require 100+g minimum of protein a day while it's quite a bit less for GB patients. -
They pump you absolutely chock full of both fluids and surgical gas. As much as it hurts, walking will help dispel the gas. I had sleeve, not bypass, but all laparoscopic surgeries require gas to keep certain bits inflated and give the surgeon room to work. I lived on chewable Gas-X (simethicone tablets) for three days post-op, and then it just... stopped.

We're all over the place in terms of how much weight sleevers lose. I really wanted to have the bypass because my research had told me bypass patients tend to lose more. Unfortunately, it was medically contraindicated for me (I got 3 opinions). So I was forced to have the sleeve and really disappointed about it. But as it worked out, I lost all my excess weight. I started at 5'1", 250 pounds, and over two years I got down to 121. I'm right now at 124. I was blessed that my body responded well to the surgery (even 2.5 years later, my appetite is only about 65% of what it was pre-surgery). I was highly motivated and compliant with my eating plan. My surgeon was aggressive and gave me a small sleeve. It all came together and I'm now normal weight for the first time since I was about 8 years old. So it's good to know the statistics, but realize that they are just averages. You can lose more or less than predicted, based on many factors.

I had the RNY in 2000. Through the years, I gained about 90 pounds and, in January 2020, had the DS revision. My question is, after almost two years, I am still losing my hair and feeling slow and sluggish. I have a hard time taking iron (because it goes right through me), so instead of taking it, I get iron infusions a few times a year. The vitamins I do take are a multivitamin, biotin, b12, Calcium citrate, and magnesium. I noticed Celebrate Vitamins has a start-up kit for a DS consisting of Multi-ADEK, Iron 60, and Calcium Citrate Soft Chews. It's not cheap, so I wanted to make sure it was exactly what I needed if I got it. Could you help figure out what the best vitamins are for me?

I agree 100%. I under went VSG in 2015 at the recommendation of my surgeon. I was initially looking into getting RNY but he stated since I was young and without children, it would be best to undergo the sleeve procedure. However, I'm 7 years post op, experience severe GERD, regained a good portion of my weight loss (my fault completely) and am now in the self pay bucket for revision as my current insurance under my employer outright refused any type of bariatric surgery. I'm not saying all this to scare anyone, I'm just saying DO WHAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU. I wish I would have put my foot down on the decision between VSG vs RNY but all and all, I did it and it is what it is. It works for some, but not for all. Unfortunately I fell into the "not for all" and it was definitely USER error. I can't speak on it, but I feel I would have had a better success rate with RNY vs VSG which is why I'm looking into the self pay option for the revision surgery. I would say to anyone looking into bariatric surgery to RESEARCH and ask a lot of questions at appointments/support groups. In the end like I said, do what is best for you. 😁

Hi I'm Sam, currently 7 seven years out of VSG and looking into revision due to weight gain.
I'll be the first to say I lived life a little too hard and am looking for a second chance at a healthier life.

Hi guys, I did it. I’m one day post op bypass and still in hospital. I have severe stomach and back pain (cramps in the back) I can’t walk without behind hunched over or lie on my side. Whenever I talk medicine or food or water the pain gets worse and my stomach gurgles making me feel like I’m about to have explosive diahorrea. How was everyone else’s experience post op one day? What shall I do?

Need lap band removed revising to Gastric Bypass
SleevedK replied to MelissaWisconsin's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Congratulations on almost being free of the lap band. I had a lap band for like 13 years and it caused me so much pain and misery over the years. Amazing how we put up with so much suffering because it starts to seem "normal". I ended up going with a sleeve revision, but knowing what I know now, I would have either gone with the bypass instead or just tried to live with my normal stomach. The sleeve's tendency to cause reflux and hiatal hernias is a real problem. I didn't understand back then just how bad it could get. -

Regret and Depression
Starwarsandcupcakes replied to Hiccup's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I ended up with a hiatal hernia (I’m prone to hernias) a few months after my surgery that was most of my sleeve. It caused gerd so bad that I had esophagitis and hiccups. Hiccups every waking moment for several months. I was on 20mg of protonix twice a day along with 40mg of Pepcid and sometimes 10 tums a day until I had a revision to RNY. The nausea and feeling sick all the time was much better after revision and I wasn’t as anxious anymore about the heartburn. I’m 14 months out from revision now and if I wanted to chug a water or something else I totally could. I eat what I feel like having in that moment and I feel so much more “normal” now. Maybe see if your doctor (or a different one) will send you for imaging to see if there’s something that’s causing the heartburn that can be fixed. Hoping things get better for you soon. -

Revision surgery: Why will this time be different?
EllieV replied to KSW22's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am wondering the same thing myself... excellent question. I just wanted to say that I am in the EXACT SAME boat. I had a sleeve in 2016, lost just shy of 100lbs and my lowest recorded weight was 199. I then went through a breast cancer diagnosis and treatment including many surgeries, and this past summer I was back up to the exact weight as you - 267. I have been working closely with my doctor and am now down to 243. I am scheduled for a revision this December mainly for GERD, but hoping that it will help me with losing some extra weight, too. I just wanted to remind you that you are not alone! -
December 2021 Friends?
Sunnyway replied to EllieV's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
My RNY revision will probably be in December, too. I doin't have a date yet, but my surgeon told me that it was likely to happen before the end of the year. I still have to complete a stress test and echocardiogram which are not scheduled for another 2 weeks. Only then will the documentation be sent to Medicare. After they approve, I'll get a surgery date. -
How long for hospital weight to drop off?
Splenda replied to greenchilegoddess's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Gastric bypass on Monday morning. Returned home Wednesday afternoon. Thursday morning, stepped on scale and weighed 5 pounds more than I did Monday morning. Wasn't until Saturday that I was below my Monday morning weight. I felt tender/swollen for about 10-14 days after surgery. Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't step on a scale until 7 days after surgery (and I do best when I check the scale daily -- I need the daily feedback). -
Anyone else having a revision done in December? I'm having a revision from a sleeve (2016) to RNY due to reflux that is resistant to medication. I would love to connect with anyone else going through this around the same time!

Extremely Dilated Fundus...Anyone Else?
EllieV replied to EllieV's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Update! I appealed the denial, appeal was denied again, took the next step which was an external review from a 3rd party company, and they deemed the revision medically necessary so now my insurance is legally bound to uphold that decision and cover it 100%. It took a while, but I won! More excited about winning the insurance battle than I even am about the surgery, but I know it will sink in soon. -
How long for hospital weight to drop off?
Starwarsandcupcakes replied to greenchilegoddess's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When I had my VSG I was 278.2 the week before surgery, 271 when discharged, and 258.3 at my post-op appointment 10 days later. I had very minimal bruising or swelling that time. When I had my revision (8 months later due to gerd), I was 222 a week before surgery, left the hospital at 234.4 (was there 4 days due to needing iron), and was 215.7lbs at my one week post-op appointment. I had loads of bruising this time around. The picture is from a week post-op and I still had visible bruising at 20 days post-op (second picture) though it never hurt. -

I couldn’t do whole scrambled eggs for a long time after my revision. They just didn’t sit well so I’d do either just egg whites (which I still do!) or plant based egg substitutes (if you can find “just” egg I recommend that one). I’m 14 months out from revision and I still don’t eat much of most things that are dense but give me soup or salad and I’m good to go.
