Newbie, pre-op questions
della street replied to della street's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Thanks all! Like I said, I'm sure these have been answered a zillion times, but I couldn't find the info condensed anywhere, so I really appreciate you taking the time to offer info and advice -- Debbie, re the question about insurance: I'm in Arizona. The Marketplace has about five companies (maybe 6-7?) and as with all states, they each offer Bronze, Silver, Gold and some offer Platinum plans. Of course, the lower-level plans have high deductibles generally and usually higher out-of-pocket maximums - but they are cheaper per month on premiums and great to have in case of serious illness/surgery. That said, I don't know whether they all cover WLS or not, but I went to an insurance broker (free to the consumer; they're paid by the insurance companies that they sell policies for...), explained what I was looking for (a policy that covered WLS, had a reasonable monthly premium, and the lowest out-of-pocket maximum I could afford. Yada yada yada - he did some searching and we found a BCBS plan that will keep my out-of-pocket max to $3000/year. Premium is about $550/month -- but -- by not having hubby include me on his employer plan (which specifically excludes WLS), we save about $200/month on that, so the net cost to us is about $350/month. I am going with a Center of Excellence, for either the sleeve or bypass -- not sure yet. There have been many years when the extra $350/month would not have been do-able financially, but fortunately, we're at a place right now where it is. I feel like the brass ring is within reach and just want to get it all finalized -- the insurance, the surgery to-do's, the surgery itself... -
Revision From VSG to RNY September 28
manitobamama posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
So I am a week out of surgery. First couple of days it felt like I did 10 000 sit ups. Today it feels like only doing 500. Got my walking down, sipping my liquids but need to sip a lot more to meet my goal. I know it doesn't happen overnight. I start each day with a Boost Diabetic Protein drink. Nice to see there is an app for this. Hope I get to know others here. Cheers manitobamama -
How's everyone doing? I'm down another 6lbs since my dec 29th post. Little frustrated to only lose 6lbs in a month when I see so many people with big numbers. And being back at work have a co-worker get gastric bypass 2wks before my sleeve and she's down 45 and I'm down 23. Gonna start the gym next week with a personal trainer, doctor says in free and clear with no restrictions.

Cannot decide if surgery is for me
Pinkgirl1234 replied to Cjc2016's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I tried and tried and Everytime I tried the latest diet I lost then regained ...The lapband was a nightmare as well...my friends who had the sleeve or bypass years ago are all doing well. -
Hi all; I had my band out last wednesday. Before the band removal, my doc said that in 1-2 months after the band removal that we could do the sleeve revision. I went back in for a post-op check up today, and now he is talking 2 months! He didnt give any emperical evidence about why we need to wait 2 months, he just said that this was just a post-op visit, and that we needed to start the bariatric surgery back from the beginning about getting me qualified, etc. I brought out the big guns and told him my company was talking about layoffs(what else is new, right?, but they really ar), the time frame is may-june, and that since I know I have coverage with my current insurance, I wanted to make sure it was done before that happened. He didnt appear particularly moved with my argument. I am BUMMED. I was hoping to come away with a date today since we both went in knowing I was getting the revision and not just the band removed. Sigh.... Another trip back to him on Monday with the packet for the bariatric work up. I was hoping to finish the summer with most of my weight gone, not sure where it stands now. blech Lisa

Had gastric bypass this Past Monday 2/24. Surgery went off without a hitch; was discharged home after 2 days. Clear liquid diet going well, but the scale isn't moving. Is it too soon?

Biggest Loser last night
ladyrider replied to sleeve 4 me's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The doctor did say that when you lose weight that fast that you lose muscle tissue, so that when you gain it back, you gain back all fat...being 14 and with unsupportive parents she probably wasn't taught much about exercise or nutrition. I never understood how a person can gain weight back after a bypass. -
Seconds of stomach pains...
LisaNLasVegas replied to fccm04's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I currently have a band - gettin a revision to the sleeve on Aug. 5. WIth me, those pains occur when something is getting stuck or a little too big of a bite - it was from my esophagus having spasms because of the stress of getting something down. WIth the band, it is/was a common pain. I'm not so sure if it is normal with the sleeve. I hope not, because one of the reasons I am getting a revision to the sleeve is because I don't want to be in pain every time I eat!! I hope it goes away soon. Try to eat slower - even smaller bites in the beginning. -
Stretching the Definition of Clear Liquids By Eating The Liquid Part of Soups?
ElfiePoo replied to 1970MaleJaxFL's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No, you aren't stretching the definition and you didn't mess up. Some doctors put their band patients on the same diet as their bypass patients but there's really no reason for it. Many of us go through the stages in 2-3 days and are back on solids by 2 weeks postop. If you can follow a month long journey back to solid food, more power to you. Just don't stress that you've somehow done damage to your band or to your stomach. -
having second thoughts
HappyCamper replied to cindywy1's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I agree with make 33, take your husband and son to an informational seminar with you. My husband wasn't keen on me having lap-band surgery, but he went with me to the informational seminar and then he supported me 100%. A lot of people hear "weight loss surgery" and think it's all drastic like the bypass. The seminar will help answer their questions and calm their fears. -
what are you afraid of? The procedure? I don't know if this will help you, but I have never had any kind of anything done to me. No broken bones no surgeries. In fact the only time I have been in the hospital is One over night stay for the birth of my son and to visit other people LOL I am so convinced this is soooo safe that I am not scared in the least. My Dr told me the worst thing that he has happen is three of people had infection around the port area and they just go in and move it to a different location. For me the positive far out way the negative. Ultimately you have to do what is best for you. I would not even consider bypass the risk were to high for me but many people have had it done...it's not for me though. This on the other hand I can do. My biggest worry is, if I will be in alot of pain after wards. Do more research, talk to more people, people who have had it done, talk to your doctors. I did so much research and have read through these forums and my PCP Dr, one of her nurses had bypass I talked to her about it even though it was bypass. I hope this helps. I haven't been approved yet so my help and advise can only so far.

Have my surgery date,
debbieperez55 replied to debbieperez55's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Thank you so much, I haven't talked to many who have had the band. I went to a seminar but they really went into the bypass surgery. I know it is slow, my PCP says that is the best. Heck, I have been obease for 30 years, what is a little longer......... Slow is good, healthy and slow. -
Hi everyone! I had gastric bypass yesterday and although i know this is support for sleeve (which I originally thought was going to happen), recovery is similar. In the pre surgery room, the nurse put a nausea patch on behind my ear. He said it would be good for three days. It must be working. No nausea, no gas pains, they took me off the IV and the morphine drip. I am taking liquid pain relief. The pain is mostly soreness inside but I really feel almost normal except when i get out of bed to walk in the hallway or to use the restroom. Everyone (staff, my surgeon and nurses) all have told me i am doing great and look great too. (Could be the make-up I put on this morning....LOL!). They helped give me a sponge bath and brush my teeth and use deodorant. I will be discharged sometime tomorrow. I am allowed to drink four oz cups of hot tea or diluted juice or broth. The ice chips have been heavenly. I had sent a flower basket yesterday on my surgery date to my surgeons team because they are so wonderful so they have stopped by or called to say thank you. I got one of the little carnation puppy dog design with Fall flowers and leaves. I was told the doctor's office loves it. I know everyone's bodies are different but I truly hope for a smooth surgery and recovery for you. Thanks!

Hi everyone. My name is Margaret. I am a mother, wife, friend, employee advocate, and a lover of dogs. I live with my husband and Chug (Chihuahua/pug) in Colorado. I just had my revision surgery on June 30th from lap band to sleeve. I am at Bariatric Stage IV - eating pureed foods and drinking Protein drinks. I am limited to five foods: egg whites, plain yogurt, refried Beans, cottage cheese and pudding. I am also taking liquid Vitamins and getting B-12 monthly injections. My daily goals are to continue to drink 64 oz of Fluid each day; eat/drink 65 grams of protein, walk 30 minutes (if not more), and continue to protect my surgery incisions and stomach by not lifting, pulling, pushing anything over 15 lbs.I am glad that the doctor limits his patients to five foods because I think it's really easy at this point to overdue it on other soft foods that may not be so healthy for you. The weight is coming off slowly which I think is good. I feel pretty good except last night, I had a side ache next to the incision where my port use to be. Other than that, I feel really good. I think this surgery was much easier than the lap band. I still get hungry and the food that my husband is eating looks tempting. However, I try to remind myself that this is just head hunger. I don't think I am really hungry. I am no longer a coffee drinker since we were told to stop drinking it. I was totally addicted to coffee mostly because of the liquid creamers. I feel so much better and I no longer have to have coffee first thing in the morning I am just beginning this journey and I am still learning to listen to my body. I am not in a support group at this time but I would love to connect with others who are on a similar journey.

Wishing you every successlll I had a friend you regained afer bypass. She refused to change he relationship with food. It is hard to do, but not impossible. Good Luck and Happy New Year!

I am considering lap band? I am really scared. I had a cousin die from gastric bypass, but i don't know what else to do about my weight! I have no family support.
-
i had gastric bypass a little over 10 years ago and the weight is back and then some. i'm looking for other options, as it's unlikely that my bypass would be revised (it's not broken, just stretched). i've seen lap band commercials, and since i believe everything i see on tv, i figured it must be worth a look  has anybody around here had lap band as a second weight loss surgery? to which section of the forum should i venture for this info? thanks! ffff

Looking for a surgeon in Atlanta
Taphophile replied to Gammy10's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My sleeve was done by Dr. William Johnson (http://www.atlantabariatriccenter.com/meet-the-atlanta-bariatric-team/meet-the-surgeons) at Johns Creek Emory Hospital. My experience with him and that practice was great. My neighbor and her daughter had bypass surgery done by Dr. Hart at the same practice. Good luck with your sleeve experience. I had mine done back in November and it has truly been a life-changing experience. -
Unsupportive - no downright hostile PCP
mamanmidwife posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I thought it might happen. I've been going to my pcp for 6 years now went in with headaches and diagnosed with HTN and I was 318lbs @ the time. 2 years aago after telling me again that I needed to control my weight and changing me to stronger meds she said "and don't think you going to do it the "cheating way" with a bypass". ok no problem by that time I was 322. I'm doing my research and I'm hoping the lap band is the thing for me, I'm certainly ready to give it my all and I just did 1 year of nutrisystem losing 30 lbs and gaining 35lbs. I go in yesterday (my birthday) for my annual. I mention that my knee is killing me I aviod stairs, and lo and behold 1 weigh 328 (lovely). She proceeds to tell me that "all i have to do is lose weight" - Ya think? -Didn't I feel better when I lost the 30 lbs. -My hormone levels are fine so there's no medical reason that I can't lose weight. -Maybe I should do like her (maybe 5 lbs over her ideal weight mind you) and get on the scale everyday and if i find I'm a pound or two over cut back on my intake. I mean shes a cardiologist/internist does she really think it's that easy, has she lost her mind? If I could lose weight and keep it off - DONT YOU THINK I WOULD!!! Jesus Mary and Joseph give me a break. Needless to say she doesn't "approve" of WLS. so i'll be looking for a new pcp to do the supervised weight loss and referral for me. What a day - Happy Birthday to me- sorry really needed to vent -

dark n lovely replied to MsUjima's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
You go!! You look beautiful???? I am 42 with several medical issues myself. Asthma, sickle cell, diabetic, high blood pressure, end stage kidney disease, and i am legally blind. I am 8 weeks post-op from my gastric bypass. I had no pain, went home the next day, and lost 44lbs in 7 weeks. My doctor felt i lost too much to fast and put me on a regular diet. I still can not eat the amount of food the dr and nut is asking for. I only take in about 400cal. I continue to drink my protein shakes. At my heaviest i was 398lbs. August 5th 2014 i was 239, surgery August 12th 2014 i was 229, today October 13th 2014, i am 195lbs. I cant remember being this small any time in my adult life.???? Congrats on your decision to lose the weight, no matter at what age you may be.....you look GREAT!! -
When is the right time for a fill?
brendaJean replied to Will_B_Healthy's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I've also had two friends that did the Gastric Bypass. The best advice...don't hop on that scale too often. Your body has been used to eating and receiving calories a certain way. It's going to fight to keep your weight because your body will naturally try to regulate itself. so don't sweat the scale too much. Instead focus on how your clothes are fitting you. I had my surgery in December and what I notice is that I'll drop weight and level off then it starts again. I visit my scale about every two weeks. I've dropped from a 26/28 to an 18/20 and I'm sure I'm about to dip further. I love to cook and I love good food. I don't substitute the real stuff, such as sugar. But I will, when I can add tofu for Protein, rice paper for flour tortillas and sandwich thins by Oroweat for bread. And stay away from carbonated drinks, it took me a good two months before the carb and soda cravings stopped. Good Luck -

For BMI > 60, GBP instead of Lap Band?
VelvetKiss replied to only1nik's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I had my Lap Band placed in July 2006, My BMI was 103 and my surgeon too tried to push the bypass or vg and I said no because I wanted the slower and more permanent weight loss in my opinion and I also felt that I could lose the weight I needed to lose. My year is coming up and I have so far lost 130 lbs, I have to update my ticker. It does require work on your part, but worth it in my opinion. My hardest times for me are in between fills. I say get as many as you need, I didnt at first but now I am getting them alot more. I hope this helps. Good Luck in what ever surgery you choose.
