    Chronic pain and transfer addiction

    Thanks for the suggestions everyone, I appreciate it. Money is an issue so options are a bit limited. I've tried physical therapy at 3 different providers but it made things dramatically worse. I've not done the pain management option yet, as I worry about my natural addictive personality taking over, food addiction is part of the reason I was/am overweight. I'm currently looking for a counselor. I'm big on talking though things. Without getting on a soap box, I'm amazed at the expense, how many of the want to bring religion into it (I'm not overly religious) or even politics (their views not mine). I'm going to checkout some of the virtual counselors this week. Basically, I feel like everything that I did and spent on getting thinner and healthier was for nought. Almost like the universe said "Yeah, that's cute, nice try!" and then changed the rules on my. I feel robbed of things. I get it life happens but (as im.sure lots of you can understand) when you spend a lifetime being heavy and working through the ramifications of that, being picked on, not getting jobs, feeling unloved, trying desperately to not call unneeded attention to yourself and you finally find a way to "fit in" it sucks to have a setback.     Portion size

    At 3 months, my given goal was half cup or 112g (4 oz) a meal. Fruits and vegetables in between with a small amount of protein like cheese. At 6 months and after, the goal given to me was 1 cup. It's usually 1/2 cup though.

    Coffee?

    I had no restrictions on coffee/caffeine intake pre or post op. Was never a fan of fat free anything so I have made allowance for one proper full fat milk latte or flat white every day and lots of other coffee with semi-skimmed milk. It has worked for me (because that was in keeping with the rules my team set me). Also helps with protein goals. Best of luck on your journey.

    November 2022 Surgery Buddies

    Hey guys! I had my sleeve on Nov 7th. I'm doing pretty good. Just wondering how many calories you all are eating? I'm getting around 400-500. I feel like that is high especially for such small amounts of food. I eat 3 (2oz) meals of pureed food, 2 premier protein shakes (160 calories per shake), and of course my water.   6. It might not be an issue, but then again it might be. It really depends on if you're getting enough nutrients and the only way you'll be able to tell is if you bring this up with your Bariatric team. Bariatric surgery makes it very hard for us to get the nutrients we need for our bodies to function, things like serious deficiencies might happen which can lead to a whole bunch of health issues which can be very hard to fix, once they take hold. Getting back on track is A LOT harder than if you hadn't had the surgery, which is why we're given vitamins for the rest of our lives and we have blood tests to keep this all in check, so please chat with your provider ASAP! I have a work friend who is a little over 6 months ahead of me and she wanted to lose weight as fast as possible and she didn't take the proteins goals seriously, cut corners and a lot of her hair has fallen out to the point she's just decided to shave it all off... And that's not the worst thing that can happen from deficiencies. She's really not healthy and she hasn't sped up her loss progress that much, she's just given herself a bunch of medical issues. Being "Skinny" shouldn't really be a concern 3 months in, unless you're finding that your losses are too drastic and you're near goal, in that case, yet again, talk to your provider. Losing weight is one of the goals but you want to really do this correctly, learning why we eat, when we should eat and how much of each thing we need to eat and learning to eat for health. That's the main goal of all of this, so that once we reach 12months, 18months post op, we don't develop unrealistic diets or want to go back to our old ways and gain it all back. We want to maintain our weight losses with the new knowledge we have learnt from doing this with the help of our providers. Chat with your surgeon, chat with a dietician, if you're getting your nutrients, it's probably not going to be an issue, but the only way to really know is by reaching out and chatting to them. Usually they will do blood tests to make sure everything is okay, but if you're worried that you're not eating enough or that you're losing too fast, you really need to chat to them All the best, take each day as it comes, and don't be afraid to talk to your healthcare team, they will be able to help you with any issues you're concerned about. it's what they're there for, to make sure you reach all of your goals, safely and realistically

    I have not been in your position with the pain but I have been depressed in the past and I can feel your struggle in your words. I would for sure get a new therapist if they are not listening to you and realizing that you need help and not telling you to just deal with things. As far as the weight gain, the lack of exercise usually isn't the biggest cause. Some people can lose without any exercise at all. I totally understand your frustration to have your options so limited but you can only control so much. You are doing the best you can. I would look at your calories and you'll probably have to lower them to get the weight to come back off again. Alcohol is usually pretty high in calories, so it might be the main culprit. So for motivations sake, quitting the alcohol might make the weight gain stop and then when you feel better in control of your life you can make more diet changes and then lose the weight too. Sometimes just having something that you can control when everything else feels so out of control helps ground you and give you the mental stability to deal with things. So controlling your diet and calories could be a good start. I wish you the very best though and take care!
  8. Try low fat milk whizzed with banana and a spoonful of low sugar peanut butter. It has a great protein count. If you are allowed a coffee made with milk. I also drank beef bouillon cubes in water and pho. Your time will pass, the first weeks are the hardest
  9. I had the sleeve on Nov 29th. I also had hiatal hernia repair, which I did not know I even had the hernia so glad they found and repaired that while i was under. I have been on the liquids since Nov 14th. I go back to Dr for check up on Dec 8th. So its liquids until at least that time. The thought of the protein shakes was almost too much, they were so sweet, I had to figure out something. I haven't been told I can have soups. The only addition to the pre-op diet us 1% milk and greek yogurt, non fat, zero sugar. So I was feeling desparate for a change. My friend who is a nurse, put together this mixture for me and it is so much more tolerable and keeps me full. It is one half cup of the unflavored yogurt, one half cup of milk, one protein shake, one scoop of unflavored protein powder all blended in blender. The cosistency is good, the flavor is so much better, the sweetness is cut more than in half. I feel so much more satisfied with this "potion" than any I have tried yet. Once i finish the amount in the blender, I know I have hit 87 GM of protein for the day. My friend did the protein calculations for me to make sure i was getting enough. As for getting through it each day, I pray a lot, and keep my mind focused on the end goal. I am also making sure I rest a lot. I have learned from past surgeries that pushing things to fast always backfires. I am practicing positive thinking and positive meditations as well. This might sound crazy but so far it is working to get me through the days of liquids. Plus, I figure if i made it this far i can do another day, as you said one day at a time, seems to be the best solution! You can do this, you are doing it and that is fantastic.
  10. Hi everyone, I just had my gastric bypass surgery and hiatal hernia repair on Tuesday. Getting into the groove of drinking water every 15 min but did a bad job yesterday. I’m really struggling with this liquid diet and can’t wait until I can eat soft foods after my doctor clears me on Dec 12 for my follow up appt. Any tips on making it through the liquid diet? I’m getting tired of soups and protein shakes only. I’ve lost 5 pounds since my surgery so far so I’m on the right path also 15 pounds since starting my liquid diet 3 weeks ago. One day at a time.

    Coffee?

    If your plan allows for coffee, just use a low fat milk if you can't have the full fat version, or try a plant milk (oat is great in coffee). And of course, no sugar or flavoured syrup. I'm in Australia, so I'm not familiar with Starbucks/Dunkin Donuts coffee, but I've been happily having a soy latte (small size only) since about week 3 post-op. I would take ages to drink it, so I bought a thermos mug and had the baristas make it for me in that. A good latte was almost a daily treat for me, and the soy milk added about 7grams of protein to my daily total as a bonus. A small soy latte is about 75 calories, so one a day worked just fine into my plan. And of course, even less calories in a filter/plunger coffee with just a splash of soy milk. One coffee a day was generally enough to scratch the itch, and even now over a year out, 2 lattes is my maximum, and I often only drink half of the second one. Still LOVE and crave coffee, but I'm not downing four or more cups a day any more. Now TEA on the other hand...

    What am I doing wrong?

    Great. I lost 33# the first month then a stall for 2 weeks now. I now am getting enough energy with soft foods so set up my treadmill. I will rejoin my gymn membership in January. Plan to do some mall browsing to get steps in. Just got my fitbit out. For 5 days the 4th week, no scale movement and then bam 3#. I guess patience, hydrate and protein while getting to enjoy life is key. Scale 2x a week.

    Coffee?

    I second the follow your plan advice. Always the best thing to do. I’m not a coffee drinker (gave it up years ago because the caffeine stirred up my reflux & kept me awake all night & decaf is sacrilegious 😉) but I was allowed green tea (which is what I drank anyway) & herbal teas. This was great as I found warm liquids more soothing then cool/cold. Is the no whole milk requirement because of the fat content? Does it mean you can have low or no fat milk? That may be worth a question to your team. It’s an easy way to get in fluids, some protein & other nutrients when water or your shakes get a bit blah.

    August surgery buddies!

    Do we want to start an open Forum here or a private one? I can get it going and we can "start" Sunday. Maybe account for 5 days a week workout min can only miss one weekend day 10k steps at least 6 days a week Any other options are welcome of course. That just seems to be the base of what my PT gives me every time. Check-ins on Sundays &/or Monday's. I know it would be hard for me to get on daily personally.

    What am I doing wrong?

    Hello. I am about 6 weeks post op and have lost 21 lbs. I realize that I am losing slowly but still losing. I have some medical conditions that are contributors to me losing slowly and I am ok with that. It's a process. We will have good weeks and have not so good weeks. Keep your protein and water intake good and maybe start tracking your food. I have started exercising this week and have only done two days, but it's a start. Slow and steady wins the race.

  18. I’ve never heard of it so did a quick read about it. It sounds like a way to sell their supplement (yeah, I can be a bit cynical) & those with certain medical conditions should not follow it. Sure people can lose weight on any diet but keeping it off is the problem as we know. (How many diets have you tried over the years?) Diets are designed to be short term & restrictive. Finding a sustainable way of eating that doesn’t restrict you living your life & provides your body (not your head) with what it needs is the way. It may include aspects of certain eating styles but the way of eating you find that works for you will be personal to you. It won’t be exactly the same as how & what I eat or someone else eats. Go back to the basics of your initial post maintenance eating as a start. Meet your protein & fluid goals. Eat lots of vegetables, some fruit, some low processed whole/multi grains & some good fats & oils. Avoid high processed, high fat, high sugar foods. Reestablish the good post surgery habits of smaller portions, eating slowly, measuring & tracking your food intake, etc. And then modify your eating as you need. Get in touch with your dietician for some guidance & support. Life just gets in the way sometimes (health, family, friends, jobs, etc.) & old habits sometimes regain their old power & override our good intentions. Many turn to food for comfort in times of stress. (So sorry about your mother’s diagnosis @mgt3boys.) Maybe visit a therapist to discuss ways of managing stress & anxiety without turning to food & ways to break those old habits. Because you’re newly post surgery, it’s best you follow the diet you’ve been given & the advice your dietician & surgeon give you @Merri Beth. Because our portions are so small after surgery what we eat is extremely important to ensure our body gets the nutrients it needs. And they have access to your medical records & blood work to ensure you are getting what you need. As you get closer to your goal, start exploring how & what you want to eat for the long term & what your body need to eat to benefits your health.
  19. Stalls are extremely common @rparker3313. Everyone experiences at least one with the first usually occurring at about week 3 & they usually last 1-3 weeks. Some start earlier or later or last longer. But your snacking won’t be helping and, like with @RDC2019, therapy will likely be of help to you to so you can discover why you’re snacking when you’re not hungry. It’s sabotaging your weight loss. Snacks tend to be high calorie foods with poor nutrition & especially when you’re still so early out the nutritional value of what you’re eating is essential for your health & for your body to function effectively. Protein, protein, protein. Eat it first & then when your plan allows eat some vegetables & lastly, if you’re able a little fruit or low processed multi/whole grains in a meal. I remember being able to eat my protein & maybe a green bean or two or a cauliflower floret & that was all for a meal for about three months.
  20. I had my surgery Oct 19. I bought twenty 1/2 cup containers. I measure everything before I eat it, even in restaurants. Just moved to 1/2 cup. I eat every 2 hours. I drink a protein drink 4 oz every 15 minutes. I have a large sippy cup, 14 oz that I drink 3 of each day. I bought 4 large ice cube trays at Walmsrt, 1/2 cup to freeze and put in ziplock bag, portion sized when I take out a cube for a meal. I browned #2 ground turkey taco seasoned and put 1/3 cup in each, topped with guacamole. Same with Italian, topped with marinara and 2 cooked cheese tortellini. Turkey chili.

    October 2022 surgery support

    I got my surgery on October 6th about 3 weeks in. I had about a three week. Where I wasn't losing weight... I was having 600 to 800 calories a day because that's what my doctor suggested I should be sticking to with the gastric sleeve... I was very strict on amount of protein I was getting. I was getting 60 to 90 g of protein a day. Was also getting my water in everyday. I felt so defeated and overwhelmed like I was doing something wrong. So I even called my doctor's office and they said no. It's totally normal your brain. Your metabolism are trying to catch up with your new stomach... Hang in there. My only suggestion would be to double check with your doctor on what your calorie intake should be this soon after surgery... Let us know if you need any more suggestions. I hope that my story helped you in some way. Hang in there girl

    I’m 3 days post op and struggling I was doing so well until this afternoon and I tried to drink some protein shake. Now anything I have water, yogurt, broth about 10 minutes later I get a horrible throat pain and I start coughing and dry heaving. Has anyone experienced this

    October 2022 surgery support

    Hey everyone, here's my update: Surgery was 10/11. I was 259.8 (heaviest weight) right before I started my 1 week preop diet. Down to 248 right before surgery. Current weight is 219. I'm now on a regular diet since week 6 (currently week 7 since Tuesday). I can only tolerate about 3-5 bites before I'm too full. I eat 4-5 times a day to get my protein in and prevent myself from getting sick due to my stomach being "too empty". I'm averaging about 500-700 calories a day most days. I still struggle to slow down when eating, especially if I've waited too long to eat. Work in progress. I have started back the gym this week. I have made a goal of doing a 5k in the spring, and I have gotten a trainer to help me until I get situated and comfortable around the gym. I had the dreaded 3 week stall. It lasted 3 weeks. Broke this week. I think the gym helped. I still struggle to get my fluids in. However, I feel great. I have turned the corner and gained energy. My mood is better as well. I have decided to take a weekend trip somewhere (that part is not decided) as a reward for getting into Onderland when I get there. My reward for going to the gym 4x a week for the next 2 weeks is a new pair of shoes (I really need them because my shoes have gotten too big since the weightloss, its a bonus to use them as a reward though). My NSV: I can put on my shoes without wanting to be taken out by a sniper. My back pain and knee pain are gone (I hadn't had the pain long though, so it went away quickly versus someone who had longer chronic pain). I have energy and smile more!

    Turkey neck?

    I am 15 mos post op and I have definitely noticed my neck snapping back slowly as my weight loss has slowed. I take collagen and a hair-skin-nails supplement every day and I feel like that has helped, and I've also noticed it looks better the more hydrated I am. All of the above listed things will help with your hair, too--I had to basically get a buzz cut 4 months after my surgery because I lost 75% of my hair, but as it's grown back it's thicker than it was before my surgery. It's almost to my shoulders again in the back! Stick with your plan, eat your protein, make sure you're getting plenty of vitamins (especially zinc for your hair!). It will get better. This whole process is like going through puberty again sometimes with all the strange and confusing changes to our bodies but a lot of it is temporary!

    Food Before and After Photos

    Dinner last night- leftover rolls from thanksgiving, apple butter, and a cheese wedge. Lunch today- a simple Greek salad and a dish made with onions, garlic, mushrooms, northern beans, and pork meatballs. (460 calories, 29g protein) And what everyone wants to see- today’s breakfast! A 1/2 cup skim milk milk in my chai and an Andes mint. 😂
