Tracking troubles/accountability
blizair09 replied to ginabee38's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have been writing down everything that I put in my body since I began my six-month insurance-required diet in March. I have continued that since my surgery last Wednesday. I write down the food (with amount), the calories, the carbs, and the Protein. Pre-op, when I cooked at home (which was most of the time), I weighed everything. When we ate out (mostly when I was traveling for work and dinner on the nights I arrived back home), we would choose places with their nutritional information posted online or I would estimate on the high end. Right now, it doesn't matter as much. At Day 8 post-op, I am still on Clear liquids and Protein powder. I haven't even cracked 200 calories yet. But, as I progress through these stages, the calories and protein will slowly climb and I am going to keep my carbs under 20. Journaling will be key in keeping everything straight. I have shared my food journal with the nutritionist several times, but that's about it (though I am not opposed to anyone looking at it). I also record my weight on it on Monday's (and occasionally other days when I hit one of the milestones I set for myself). Journaling has really kept me accountable and has been key to 111 pound weight loss (so far!). Good luck! -
I did pack my Protein shakes and some bars....ate only fish at the restaurants with veggies...and swam and walked for exercise .

Hi There- I am also doing ok with the pre op diet. Mine doesn't seen as strict as many of the others. I am not on all liquid. Mine is very low/no carb, high Protein and lots of veggies. I do also drink 2 shakes a day. 1x for Breakfast and 1x as a snack. So far so good. Best of luck to you and I will be thinking of you on 2/7...let's stay in touch and help each other out...This is going to be a huge life change and I want all the help and support I can get...and I will be there to help and support you too. The brain is a powerful thing.
AuntieLala83 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Anyone having trouble with their brains making us feel like we are doing something wrong. I'm doing wonderfully. I'm 5 weeks out, down 42 lbs .. Walking 3 miles a day 5 days a week. I'm fortunate to be able to eat everything in 1/4 to 1/2 cup portions only. Currently eating about 700-800 calories per day. The problem is my brain tells me if I put something in my mouth that actually tastes good, it must be bad. For lunch I had a sourdough chicken Sammy from Jack n the box but I removed everything except the grilled chicken breast and cheese. It ended up being 200 cals and 31gms of protein. Healthy right??? My brain says NO! What can I do to get my brain in order? -
Just banded TODAY!! Have some questions!

I am day 6 post op & jello still feels very heavy to me too. I am on full liquids now & soups & protein shakes go down very easy in very small quantities. It still hurts in my left ribs to take a deep breath, but they gave me a respiratory machine to beathe into & that helps some. Each day gets better. -

. I ordered Unjury online for the first year. Now I use Quest protein available online or at Vitamin Shoppe or GNC. -
Protein bars and shakes, virtually all nuts (including peanuts) are healthy but almonds are especially good, turkey jerky (you might want to try Pacific Gold from Costco), Old Wisconsin Turkey Bites (Walmart and over the top tasty), Kashi pita crisps, Babybell Light Mini Cheeses, string cheese, some (not all) trail mixes, yogurt (Oikos is the best I've ever tasted), rice cakes (Quaker has some really good ones, both sweet and savory flavors), I like the "small" Lunchables (Ham and Swiss and crackers only are my favorite but they can be hard to find - try Target), Kellogg Special K Cracker chips (great substitute for potato chips or fries), and you can't go wrong with chicken, fish or turkey as long as it's not fried. Colorado has the most beautiful mountains in the world!! Have a great trip!!

Food to feel full.

I understand the need to omit bread and starchy items but beans are filled with natural potassium, protein and other nutrients...they are a mainstay in my diet and have not caused grassiness . -
Progress Report
Nursedeeva replied to MyLifeNewChoice's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congrats I was banded on 2/16 and my first post op visit is Monday. I am feeling pretty good. No major side effects except lost of appetite except severe loss of appetite. It is a real chore to get my fluids down because my appetite is so gone. My doctors nurse was real funny when I call to tell them my appetite was gone and I did not feel like drinking anything. She said well be prepared to buy a cute wig when you hair falls out from not having your proteins. Can you believe after that it became easier to drink. Vanity is amazing at my age I am still emotionally attached to my hair. Go figure :-) -
After reading alot of posts on lapbandtalk.com I have come away with not wanting to know a few things. The main thing is that I do not want to learn how to cheat the band. I do not understand wanting to cheat the band. I am self pay and that would be like burning the hard earned money to pay for it. I have skipped over posts relating to this subject. Something I don't want to ever experience again is a stuck feeling. I haven't had a fill and casually was chewing seedless grapes when I swallowed one WHOLE. It was almost immediate discomfort then serious pain. I freaked. I prayed. I tried to belch, burp, anything. I pounded on my chest bent over and tried to puke it up. Well it finally went somewhere, not up. Scared the living crud out of me. I have to watch this. Also chewing gum. I have in the past swallowed. Bad idea with the band. Some more randomness on lap band stuff: Trying to find ways to get high protein that is not animal based, this list shows all sources of protein.

Those of you that are at least 6 or more weeks out...

What are you eating to get all that protein 6 weeks out. I am lucky to get 20 a meal and no snacking. Suggestions would be great or share your meal plan with me at crazygirlmarrero13@live.com. Thanks -

I didn't really track fat\carbs. I set MFP to balance the rest of my calories (1000-1200 during my loss phase) after 75g of protein to balance equally between the others. I did not lose particularly "fast", but it was fast enough for me. I lost steadily with few stalls, no hair loss and moderate loose skin reaching my goal range, (about a 90 pound loss). by about month 9. I'd lost 13 preop I count in the total. -

I don't track fat, but do track calories, carbs and protein. I'm getting 800-900 calories a day, and 60-80 grams of protein with under 30 grams of carbs a day (Most days I stay way under). I am probably older than you, so my weight loss has been slow but steady (about 1.5-2 lbs a week). I am 3 months out this week. And yes, stalls suck. Mine always involve a gain of a pound, stay there for a while, then lose 2...it's the darndest thing! -

About 900-1000 calories per day, 60+ grams Protein, under 40 net carbs. I don't track fat, but buy everything low fat like cottage cheese, chicken breast, cheddar cheese, etc. My weight loss averaged about 2 lbs per week, but slowed to about 1 lb since I dropped below 200 lbs. It's such a wonderful feeling! -
Need food suggestions!

I had the exact same problem post surgery - my solution was savory liquids: tomato soup, V8, broths, etc. I drank water only for my hydration. Try things in teeny little bits at different temperatures - that may help you handle the sweetness also. Good luck! -

Whey is what you are supposed to buy. Its protein that is best for us after surgery. I use GNC Lean 25...25 g protein in each serving. I have vanilla and mixed berry and they are both great...GNC also has those cool mixing cups too...m -

Preop you should get about 100-110 grams of protein per day. There are different whey proteins - a concentrate I think and isolate. The best for you and in quality is Whey Isolate. It costs a little more. The Body Fortress at Walmart comes in both types - a whey concentrate that has only part isolate, but the isolate says it in big letters on the front. I highly suggest you make sure to get isolate. Good luck! -
Everything has been going well for me but yesterday morning I woke up with what at first felt like hunger pains for the first time. I had oatmeal and a protein shake and a couple hours later I was feeling better. By the afternoon I had developed a pain in my lower left back and my stomach nausea had returned. Having experienced this once before I realized it was kidney pain. When I woke up this morning the stomach nausea was gone but the kidney pain was still there. When I went to the bathroom the volume was very low which is the dead give away that it was a kidney stone. I was able to get in contact with my doctor and he confirmed it sounded like a kidney stone and to try to flush it out. I wasnt as diligent this weekend in getting my fluids and now I am paying the price. Its a wakeup call to me on the importance of staying hydrated. Has anyone else experienced kidney stones post op?

Hi there. I use Body Fortress whey protein. I get a 2lb container for $15.00 at Walmart. It has 26 grams of protein per scoop. They have chocolate, vanilla, strawberry and chocolate peanut butter. I like the powder because I use like a scoop and a half per shake ant that gives me like 39-40 grams of protein. A lot more cost effective. Premixed are def easier. But I'm more loyal to my wallet. Good luck to you! I'm 8 days post op and the pre op was def more challenging. -
Stay calm. It is common to take a few weeks before you begin to lose weight. Your body is in a major heal mode and allowing it to heal is the prime goal at 10 days post-op. For one thing most patients gain weight while they are in the hospital because they are pumping fluids into you. So you have to first lose this added weight before you begin to see a weight loss. So stay calm, follow the directions (meal volume, Protein, fluids and vitamins), relax and let the magic happen.

Hello everyone! Im scheduled for surgery next week and im sooo confused.. clear liquids and protein shakes. Whats allowed?? I know only broth, but what shakes? My doc said no milky shakes.
-
I drink red wine but I have given up beer forever, not a single sip ever again (I am scared of stretching my pouch). Before I can have wine I have to look at my daily calories and protein and see if it "fits" in. If I am under on calories and have all my protein then I can have a 5 oz glass of wine.

I have 3 appointments today. pre-op at 9 am. Post -op Do's and Don'ts at 11 am then pre-admission at 12:45 pm. I'm going to pack my cooler with Protein shakes and Water and head out at 8 am! Feeling anxious and excited all rolled up together!

I’m finally feeling awesome but I’m a bit concerned at my ability to drink 11 oz Protein Plus drinks in a matter of minutes. Did they not take enough of my stomach out?😭

So today is my first time I feel normal, I had the vsg on 11/10. And today I was actually hungry! I'm still on liquids. I drank 4 bottles of water with no problem. Taking gulps and all during the day. I drank my protein shake which normally takes me 30-45 min, in 15 min. (That was dinner) I was able to drink another bottle of water after that. Now on my 5th bottle right now. Basically I'm feeling no stricture, I kinda feel hungry right now. It's weird. Everyday I'm able to drink and eat more, I know that's my stomach healing and not being so swollen. But I just want to make sure my ability to drink fast and a lot is ok. Cause we all know how the docs would tell you how hard it would be to get liquids in. Just a little advice or peace of mind would be much appreciated. Thanks ????
