Hi everyone! Do any of you add protein powder to your coffee? I drink a few cups of decaf a day, but I know I haven't been getting in as much protein as I should. I don't really want to drink the coffee protein shakes because of the amount of caffeine in them. I want to find a protein powder that dissolves well in coffee, but I don't know where to start. Also, does anyone else have a problem drinking water? I used to love water, but since the surgery it hurts my stomach and sits like a rock unless it's flavored water.

I agree that everyone's journey is different! Before my weight gain, I did have a pretty fast metabolism, as far as what I am doing now is just prioritizing protein and trying to stay away from carbs.

WOOHOO! Congratulations! You will be there before you know it. There is nothing you can do for hair loss but be patient and it will grow back. It is natural and can be accelerated by multiple things. Some people lose hair just from anesthesia, iron deficiency, etc. It is common in WLS because of the lack of calories, your body "dumps" the easiest thing first when fighting. Kind of like why your toes and fingers get frost bite first. There are a ton of supplements but they don't stop hair loss, they just help regrowth. Don't stress it, just keep up on your protein, fluids, vitamins etc. and you will be just fine. Wishing you the best!

Hi, I also had GB and HH repair..along with esophagus repairs due to years of GERD. As mentioned above, at the hospital I was given the 1 oz. medicine cups and filled them up, taking tiny sips. Each cup was about 3 sips and I did this all day long keeping a tally of how many I drank. Each day I could drink a little more of a sip and soon 1 cup became 1 sip. I also made sure EVERY day that I beat the day befores numbers if even only by 1 oz. Broth, shakes, all liquid counted towards my liquid goal and if it had protein even better. I treated it like my own personal competition. By my 2 week follow up I was hitting the low end of my fluid goals. It got a little harder when I started on pureed foods, because my meals weren't liquid anymore. But I created quite a routine and after a few days I was back to hitting the liquid AND protein goal. I would wake up, drink 8oz of high protein milk (Fairlife-12 g protein) which also counted as 8 oz of fluid. Drink 16/20 oz water Drink a 12 oz shake (30 g protein) and 12 oz fluid Drink about 16 oz water Eat: usually egg salad or chicken salad, or ground turkey with taco seasoning all pureed, usually about 5-8g protein because I could eat so little. Drink a clear protein drink, I drank gatorade zero with protein (10 g protein) and 16 oz fluid Drink water until bed. This was and really still is my daily routine now but I can drink like normal and fast so I get about 100 oz of WATER a day and no longer count my shakes as fluid. It was slightly modified when I went back to work but basically wake up and drink a shake, then 3-4 bottle of water before lunch, lunch and 1-2 bottle of water before dinner and after dinner water (or sometimes a suagr free something like lemonade) up until bed. I still drink a shake for breakfast because I just cant eat enough to get in enough protein unless I literally eat all day and then I feel full and bloated all day. You just have to find a schedule that works for you, but either way it takes time to ease back into it. Just don't get dehydrated. Focus on fluids first and then work on protein, at lease that is what my team instructed. Good luck, we are all rooting for you!

It can be difficult at first to get the full 64ozs in. Swelling from the surgery & a sensitive tummy can’t make it more challenging. As long as you’re making an effort & getting closer to the full 64ozs you’ll be ok. And don’t forget your protein shakes, soups, broths, all count to your fluid intake. Often warm drinks are more soothing & easier to drink: try adding green or herbal tea to your daily fluid intake. Protein waters are great addition as well. Some find it helpful to set a timer so they sip every 5+/- minutes. I also drink during the night. 64ozs or 8 cups of liquids is actually the recommended intake goal for all adults not just those who’ve had weight loss surgery. It’s necessary for your body to function effectively.

White wine and garlic mussels with artichoke hearts. Ate about roughly half of each (aside from the sauce)… a surprisingly high amount of protein! -
you typically never get the full amount for a while after surgery. Even at 8 months post op i struggle to get in the 64 oz of water minimum. As for protein, getting those little one ounce little cups helped a ton. I poured a shot basically and would drink it that way 1 ounce at a time and it was so much easier. Just do the best you can. Take sips throughout the day. Look at your pee... You want it as clear as possible. very yellow pee means you are dehydrated. When i see that i am like oops i need to drink some water lol.

Hi guys - I had my GB surgery with hiatal hernia repair on Friday. Came home Saturday. I was feeling woozy yesterday and today and the nurse called and she told me I’m not getting in enough water. Any tips on getting water and protein in. I cannot imagine how I’m supposed to get 32-64oz of water in daily. Does this get water with time?

Anything, small gifts. Gift cards. A t shirt, socks, hair ties. I usually try to find something interesting or unusual , like a small desk calendar with daily useless facts or something like that. Snacks other than candy, like protein stuff. (beef jerky, protein puffs, shake sample packets) Possibilities are endless, tell him to get creative and think outside of the box. PS: For 19 years I have been with my spouse and I ALWAYS got a big bag of starburst. Last year I asked for sugar free treats instead of them to try out before my surgery. I hated 99% of them, I would rather go without. This year, I said I wanted starburst again! lol But, a small sleeve like you get at the gas station. I can eat 1 or 2 and be good for days or weeks without another one, so I would rather just enjoy them once in a while then not at all or to bother with the sugar free stuff. (I do good with sugars so I don't mind having a treat every once in a while) -
I’ll try that water tip! Drink & wait! Someone else suggested something similar on another post. What’s your go to protein shake?

KimA-GA replied to AXR313's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
head hunger can be a lot of the hunger you few early on… take the opportunity to make sure you are getting good nutrition and protein/fluids.. we are so used to chewing and eating three or more times a day it’s a bit of a mental trip to suddenly not… takes a while to adapt to your new realities (i am still adapting) -

If only there were tablets life would be easier for a lot of people. However, there isn't. There is "protein shots" which I believe they sell on this site. I have never had them so I don't know anything about them. There is also "clear protein" such as gatorade zero with protein, or protein 2.0, premier clear. They are basically all the same but some prefer some over others. I drank the gatorade daily early out as I worked towards my protein and fluid goals. While not eating is ok, it's certainly NOT ok at the same time. Overweight people can become malnutritioned just as someone with an eating disorder on the other side of the spectrum. (bulimia, anorexia). While eating isn't the most important factor, being sure you are getting your nutrition is. Getting your protein and nutrients in is so important. For anyone, not just WLS patients. When you eat your meals, eat super lean high protein foods and maybe some veggies. I usually hit my minimum protein goals by lunch and dinner then becomes a bonus. I do however drink a protein shake for breakfast, so at 30g protein it is a big jump to the days goal. However, lunch is lean meat that is high in protein. White meats, tuna, fish, chicken breast all have 20g protein or more per serving. I am 8 months out now, still wouldn't say I am rally hungry. Now, I seem to have just trained my mind to eat 3 times a day. I am experienced true hunger maybe a handful of times in those 8 months and it usually shows itself at a belly ache. Took me some time to realize it. Anyway, sorry for the long post. But in short, get your nutrition before you end up in a detrimental situation. Call your team for help! Best wishes to you! -
Doing Noom the year before my 10/19 surgery it encouraged if hungry drink water and wait 20 minutes. Now I try the same. I find a protein shake works. It also gets me 30g protein. Either a good first choice. But I eat 5x day. I'm eating 1/3 cup meat 4x day or eggs for breakfast. 1/8 cup vegetable or baked yam or potato. My meat is 93% ground beef or Jenni ground turkey taco or Italian seasoned. Add guacamole and salsa to first and marinara to second.

My surgery was Oct 19 and almost through soft foods. I still measure every meal. I have a 14 oz glass that I goal to drink 4 of. Try to eat every 2 hours. One protein shake a day. Just getting my energy back. Dec 13 I go to any food. Will skip steak bread for a.year. try one food a day. So far only had fast heart rate the second week. Spices don't bother me. Found ground turkey (Jenni) taco or Italian flavored, turkey sausage and looking forward to turkey bacon. 93% ground beef is treating me fine. Eating 1/2 cup, measured each meal, 5x day. Take the container when I eat out. I have a card party at Denny and Perkins. Omelet, tomato soup. Will continue with protein shake for the first year to maintain protein until I get to 1 cup. -
1 week post op & HUNGRY ! Help!
Bettyboop56 replied to AXR313's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I found beef broth doesn't have as much protein as chicken broth. I flavored it with taco seasoning, a Buffalo seasoning, smoked paprika.... Neighbor made French onion soup, strained, it was delicious. But mostly I had cambell or lipton chicken noodle soup strained broth. Threw away the noodles chicken. I later moved to cream of chicken soup with dry milk powder to add protein. -

I am 6 weeks post surgery. I swear by fairlite protein drinks. 30g protein or Muscle milk has a 40g. I plan to drink them for the whole year. I set a 15 minute timer on my phone and drank 1 oz water. Found room temperature was best not cold. I found sugarless skittles flavoring for water. Green apple and grape are great. I drank my protein drink 1 ounce an hour. -

I didn’t get all my protein in either in those first couple of weeks. You’re healing, not hungry or interested in eating. My surgeon was ok as long as I was making an effort & was getting in a little more every couple of days. Same with fluids. You’ll notice some days are easier than others & that’s fine too. You’ll get there. Just slowly sip on those protein shakes, soups, etc, all day. They count as fluids so double win. Try protein waters too. -
Head hunger or real hunger? Real hunger feels different. I get restless & think something is wrong. I don’t crave a specific food, flavour or texture. It also doesn’t go away. And there is always a logical & reasonable reason why I’m hungry like I haven’t eaten much all day or have missed a meal. It usually occurs later at night but that’s me (been known to get out of bed to eat some chicken meat at 11pm). Head hunger is related to boredom, habit, emotions, time (it’s lunch time I must be hungry), etc. Also excess acid can cause you to think your hungry. And in most cases, a grumbling, rumbling tummy is actually just your digestive system working not that you’re hungry. It can take time to work out the difference but is all part of our learning. As is discovering how to manage the head hunger if it is that. Have something to drink like water as others have suggested or a warm drink. Distract yourself: craft, clean, read, play a game, ring a friend, check social media or this forum, etc. Or wait 30 mins or so before satisfying the hunger. But yes, your hunger does come back. When is individual though many seem to start at about 6 months. But as with most things some start earlier & some later. So you may be experiencing real hunger. Check with your dietician to review your current food choices & intake. Maybe adding a little more food to a meal, if you’re able, will help if it’s real hunger. Try a couple of nuts, some jerky or other meat, yoghurt, boiled eggs, & other protein dense foods as snacks. But again check your plan & ask your dietician for suggestions.

I detested them too which is why I turned to drinking yoghurt. Shop around as some don’t have a lot of protein or have a lot of sugar (real or artificial). The one I drank had about 25g of protein per 200mls if I remember correctly. Unfortunately they don’t make it anymore. 😩 You can make your own- just add milk to your favourite yoghurt to thin it out. Add some fruit & extra protein powder if you want. -

Y’all DO NOT add kelp noodles into just boiled water with baking soda or you’ll end up with peanut noodle soup. 🤦♀️ Lesson learned. At least they were soft…. 🤷♀️ Maybe next time I’ll just use really hot tap water. Also, ate 3 bites and was grossed out so had cereal with a protein shake instead. -

Protein no not really... water is still a struggle at nearly 8 months post op. For protein shakes i bought those little 1 ounce cups and i would drink it that way. 1 ounce at a time throughout the day. It helped a ton. -
I was also sleeved in Sept & I've found that my hunger is actually just me being excited to eat food. If I'm distracted that feeling doesn't come up. But in those instances when I know my brain won't shut up I like the MINI Quest Bars. Specifically the minis bc they're only 80cals. Also pre packed beef jerky strips (60 cals) & Dry Roasted Edamame snacks (The Only Bean brand) all high protein & delicious! Those are enough to satisfy that need to munch something
